View Full Version : Canterbury: Calling all mods and rockers!

On the 22nd of August Street and Sport Motorcycles in Christchurch are hosting the first ever Mods and Rockers Winter Rumble. Open to all classic 60s and retro style bikes (Triumph Bonneville, Honda GB500 etc) and all classic scooters we'll ride from Christchurch to New Brighton. Once at Brighton we'll have a series of Mods vs Rockers contests and the winning group will be presented with a trophy and lead the vanquished back to Christchurch.
Once in town we'll gather at Poplar Lane where the Twisted Hop and Vespa Room bars will be hosting a party. There will be secure indoor bike storage, so if you want to celebrate (or drown your sorrows) you can do so without worrying about drinking and riding.
To find out more visit www.streetandsport.co.nz or contact David Thompson on 03 366 2201

The scooter clubs are getting right into it, and there is even going to be a contingent coming down from Wellington. It would be a disaster if they outnumber the rockers, so we need anyone with a cafe racer, classic Brit or Euro bike or a modern classic (Kawasaki WR650, GB Honda, Bonneville etc) to rally round the flag.

Oooh I wish I was down that way! It would be a hoot! The Volty could almost pass as a classic bike... near enough for those short-sighted geeky mods anyway.
And don't forget your white scarf around your neck. And your leather cap to wear once you take your helmet off. And remember to watch Quadrophenia in advance so you know exactly how to behave. :headbang:

Hey, jump on a plane if you don't mind riding pillion or use the cheap ferry crossing the Wellington scooter crowd have organised. Plenty of accomodation and the beer is especially good.

Yeah we should get a bunch of Rockers together from Auckland and come down and invade the party!
Actually if I was a real Rocker I would steal a ferry ticket from one of those weedy mods and send him crying home to his mummy. Hmmm... there's a plan... :shifty:

Just wondering... would a 1954 AJS pass? It's all restored and fully rd legal I'm dying to ride with some other oldies!
Sounds like a bloody awsome ride.
Wish I could make it.
I asked the guy at united video "Hey mate you got a copy of Quadrophenia"?
He looked at me and said "I dont even know what that is"
Does it have Arn-old Swarts-a-nigger in it? :gob::nono::nono::nono:

Yeah, no problems, it would be awesome to see your AJ. I can guarantee you won't have the oldest bike there. I'm looking at charging $20.00 and sponsoring the volunteers at Burwood Spinal Unit as they have lost most of their funding and do a good job (and have helped more than a few bikers). For your $20.00 you'll get a patch and a good feeling, so well worth it.
I also need an idea of numbers as there is a big difference between catering for 20 people and 200 people. If anyone is thinking of going, can they please check out our website www.streetandsport.co.nz and email me from that.
ditto.

No problem with Japanese - where a bike is built means nothing compared to the attitude of the rider. Any bike styled after 60s Brit bikes (GB400 Honda etc) or cafe racer custom is welcomed to participate but the party afterwards will be open to anyone on a bike.

ACC are going to support this event with free gear - I've had verbal commitment from them to shout a free helmet, jacket and gloves for a draw. I'm trying to decide whether to make it people's choice or just a lucky draw.
My bike is going to be so sexy I'll be a sitter for people's choice, so I might make it that.

If you're going to do that, you'd better have two prizes - one for a mod and one for a rocker. Otherwise there will be all-out war! :gob:
Of course the mod's prize will have to be all Italian designer top-of-the-range gear, but the rocker will be happy with some scruffy old leather jacket that was found lying on the road after being run over by a stock truck.

Pfffttt Triumph and sexy in the same sentance, DOES NOT COMPUTE!!!! :bleh:
No, it doesn't "compute". Despite their technical superiority, Triumphs are motorcycles that evoke passion and emotion, and are designed and built by men and women with a passion for motorcycles as opposed to, say, the Aprilia Pegaso which looks like it was built by a computer. And "sexy" is something that comes from the heart (or other region), not from a computer printout.

ACC (who are funding the prize, God Bless them) want it to be compliant with their standards which I took to mean "the best you can get", so I'll be telling them they need to provide a tri-composite helmet and a high end leather jacket and gloves - at least $1400 worth of kit. The scooter crowd are happy with a pudding bowl and a parka, so I'll find something at the army surplus store for them.

No, it doesn't "compute". Despite their technical inferiority, Triumphs are motorcycles that evoke passion and emotion, and are designed and built by men and women with a passion for leaking oil and fixing bikes at the side of the road as opposed to, say, the Aprilia Pegaso which looks like it was built by a computer and will run like one for over 200k miles. And "sexy" is something that comes from the heart (or other region), not from a computer printout.
Fixed that for you :bleh:

if you can find a modern (Hinckley) Triumph that leaks oil, I will lick the oil up and wear a T shirt that says "Aprilias are superior to Triumphs". Fortunately I won't have to do that because there is no such T shirt.
Mind you, the mechanics I know love Aprilias - always something to fix on them and always something new, as opposed to bloody Triumphs that only ever need servicing every 10,000 ks and never break down.

You can pay your $20.00 at the shop, and while I'm riding your Aprilia you can have a squirt on the technologically inferior Daytona 675 - I'll even wipe away the oil leaks for you.

Heaps of classic bikes and scooters have come out of the woodwork, the T shirts and patches are being made, the challenges have been devised and the pubs are laying on extra staff. Even if you don't ride a classic bike or scooter, come along to the challenge to cheer on the Mods or Rockers, then join in the celebration in Poplar Lane.

That was excellant even if the Mods took the trophy!!! What a beautiful array of bikes and people came from all over the place.
Started quietly with plenty of early rockers turning up and only a couple of lone scooters on the otherside.
But wasn't too long before the smell of fumes filled the air and the brigade arrived looking somewhat organised and a little intimidating (not) LOL
the ulysses club did a great job or sorting the food and the battle began. Slow riding , slow slalom , blindfolded :blink: riding, and all sorts of other shenanigans.
What a hoot all of these beautiful triumphs and the odd other name, BSA, ducati, honda yamaha all being lead away by lambretta's and vespa's :shit::shit:
Had to play tail end on the XJ cause the Honda never made it.
Rode off to lyttelton with a small tour of the city. Over Evans pass and out to Brighton for a stop.
Into town to poplar lane and when I left them 45 minutes ago looked like there was some serious relaxing time happening!!!
Great day and looking forward to tomorrows ride.
NEXT year the mods will :chase::chase: us!!!

Anybody else venture down to Street & Sport Triumph dealer in Christchurch today?
They'd organised a 'mods and rockers' thing raising money for a spinal charity and had a great turn-out of old Triumphs, Norton, you name it, and lots of scooters. Good atmostphere too. Didn't stick around for the ride-out as I had other commitments.
Anyway, good on 'em. Hope they do it again next year.

Good effort for the old Trophy, she hummed along like a top! made it there and back (yes, Ixion, with the lights on and in the dark too), used no oil, dripped a bit but not much and even sat there idling in the shed waiting for the happy owner to give the word that the days task was done...
Good fun event, bloody well organised but farkin cold - oh well... it was a winter rumble... More tomorrow but no pictures - forgot to take the camera eh? Thanks for the hospitality and Jim2 as an excellent riding companion and Warick, what a star - chch to picto to chch in one day on the MHR...
