I've only been riding for a couple of winters so I've just recently started noticing weather patterns as they apply to motorbike riding. But I'm going to go out on a limb here and say we're in for some wild rides in July!

Rain you can barely see through
Wind that tries to blow you sideways
Cold that makes you forget everything you're meant to be doing while you concentrate on your chattering teeth and aching fingers :cold:

So may I humbly suggest that now is the time to make all your gear as waterproof as possible, get into a regular routine of checking your tyre pressure & tread, make sure all your llights are working properly and swot up on riding techniques for challenging weather conditions.

NOW BRING IT ON!! :headbang::stupid::ride:

Good idea..I passed a bike on Sat night going t'other way from me and noticed in rearview mirror that the bike's tail lights were not working...visible from the front - not from the back...

I have a wonderful adult sized one-piece rain deflective zip-up fold in tuck away warm as over the top suit.

Yeah I was following a rider from KB one dark, drizzly, foggy day and he was pretty much invisible - even though I knew he was there somewhere! Black gear, dark helmet and tail-light bulb blown out. Scary stuff.

A couple of days a week I work for a client in Glenfield and park my bike in front of a large tinted window - perfect for checking out my reflection. :blip: Ooops I mean perfect for checking all my lights before I ride away. Headlight, tail light, brakes, indicators. Takes about two seconds to do but gives me the reassurance that I'm as visible as possible to those dozy car-drivers I'll be encountering on my ride home. Two seconds once a week is a pretty good investment IMO!

I was riding on the North Shore of Auckland this morning (around 7:30am). Instead of seeing around 4 other riders I only saw 1.

My helmet was covered in water running down it, and the pinlock visor had starting to fog up.

My gear is a bit old, and by the time I eventually got home I was wet right through to my underwear. I hate peeling off wet underwear.

Eeeewww! That doesn't sound like fun! :gob:

I'm pretty much dry as a bone under my gear, no matter what the weather throws at me. The exception (unfortunately) is my boots. I really must find a workable solution to that one.

Typical Weather Pattern #4 - 116 Kiwi Bikers start enquiries into Heated Hand Grips.

I'm planning to sell the cage next month, so I'd better HTFU and learn to be wet and cold.

Welcome to the real world of motorcycling, buy good gear, it is available these days, expensive but available!

There was a time when all we could get was an army great coat and loads of news papers!

Hope this doesn't sound condescending or smart arse I simply want to emphasize that the good gear is out there today, get some and winter riding will be fun.

Yep, I do have good gear and I do think winter riding is most excellent fun!

I just think it's sad when people get all wet and cold or (eep!) don't prepare for the bad weather and find they can't keep the shiny side up! :sweatdrop

In a perverse way I was quite pleased to see the rain on Friday and again today.

Having just got new boots and new jacket I was itching to see if they were really waterproof.

Absolutely bucketed down on the way in today.
Not a drop on me. Warm and cosy.
Now it can stop raining.....

Well 1 year and a harf on and the cordura is no longer "100%WATER PROOF" I can vouch for this as on Sunday I took a jaunt up to Puhoi.
Great bit of road up there now and the toll? what toll.
Anyway, gear that was as advertsied a little over a year ago as 100% waterproof is definitely NOT Water Proof anymore.
Boots that have never leaked before in a similar life span and that get dubin and boot polish on a regular basis also leaked, big time.
Tyres and pressures all good, tread Ok. Bike on song and even with a Horizontal storm coming at me from all sides in the new gulleys they've made up there the ride was still awesome.
Yep July in Dorkland, can't say I'll miss it when it's gone.
Good reminder about gear though Klingon, a bit more dubin and some good old snow stuff and the gear and boots will be 100% again.
Meet up with another hardy KB at the Puhoi Hostilery we told each other we were mad! barking mad and then went our seperate ways.

I swapped the fun of the ridiculous amounts of fucking rain we had in Auckland last July - 22 days out of 31 from what I remember - to ice on the roads in Taupo. I've already been for one rear wheel fishtail due to hitting black ice on a roundabout. Fun fun fun.

As ugly as it sounds those old wharfy yellow coats and pants are the business in the wet, visible and dry as. Plus you can wear your warm stuff under it.
