http://www.stuff.co.nz/southland-times/news/2887986/Winton-lawyer-hurt-in-crash
A Winton lawyer suffered multiple injuries when he crashed his motorcycle returning from a rally near the Catlins at the weekend.
Kenneth Winston Forrest, 54, lost control on Chaslands Highway in the Catlins on Sunday afternoon and was flown to Southland Hospital.
Mr Forrest was understood to be returning from the Pissed Penguin motorcycle rally at Kaka Point at the time of the crash.
Police said no other vehicles were involved.
Mr Forrest is a director at Menzies Forrest Marshall law firm.
Business partner Paul Menzies said he did not know how long Mr Forrest would be off work recovering from his injuries or whether it would deter him from riding motorcycles again. "He's just an old man doing young boy things," Mr Menzies said.
A Southland Hospital spokesperson said Mr Forrest was in a satisfactory condition in a surgical ward.

No I won't be cutting the ribbon - sounds like someone is trying to organize a couple of those Spyder Trike things for the Major and our local MP (who just happens to also be the Minister of Finance) to ride through (only needs a car license I suppose, and no chance of the indignity of falling off!) - but thats top secret so don't tell anyone eh !! - anyway they will be doing the ribbon thing.
I knew I shouldn't have left my sniper rifle at home for a reason

So you could not ask for better weather all round. The trip there and back was varied, mainly because of a Southern Rider Escapade ride where ya have to jaunt around varying place's, stop and answer a question. A damn good excuse to stop at places you would just blink and pass by.
So the trip went from Darfield, Geraldine,Farlie, Tekapo, Wanaka, Arrowtown, Cromwell, Clyde, Chatto Creek, Alex', Roxbourgh and a kip at Shreks place.
The Sat down up and over some crazy cool roads to Invacargil, Bluff, Back up and out to Slope Point, Catlins, Some Whistling Frog for lunch, then up for a Rally at that Kaka Point Joint, and the place was pretty damn full, must be the biggest turnout in the years I have been.
Sunday and a mighty chilly start.. Brrrrrr. Belclutha, Middlmarch, Macraes Flat, Hyde, Keyburn, Ranfurley, a quick flick to Wedderburn, back track to Palmaston, up the road and through Trotters gorge, out to the Coast sth of Oamaru, to the old town part of the big O, Inland and out to Cave, Ashburton, getting dark and cold, Mc D's and off again out to Darfield, Oxford and home by 9.45pm.

A awesome weekend, tiring, and fun exploring and socialising.
Pictures are done... and show the journey, 1800+kms of it.

Fractured C3 and lots of bruising. No spinal damage despite the fracture.
Passed on regards of KB this evening along with a lot of Vitamin Chocolate. He's on some serious pain relief but wouldn't give me any :(
Sporting a rather fetching neck brace and sends his regards.

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr biggest penguin ever, now I am crying into my beer, wish I'd have been there, 3 days to go till my first UK Rally, going to a leaving party being sober driver and driving through the night to get there, as pissed off with the frigging conjestion on the roads over here, so going to avoid it and drive through the night, luckily I can put up my tent in the dark eh!
Miss you all heaps, more than you'll know and seeing the photographs has made me mighty sad:mellow:

Not looking that way. Is it realistic that a chain goes from fine, but needs lube to completely buggered in 2000k's? The old "not lubed like it should have been" story is wearing thin... as is the chick excuse, I was there and it was done as directed. Reality is its a cheap bike with cheap parts... if your prepared to sell them then you should be prepared to stand by them, simple. Advice to Keeway buyers that getting a good quality chain might be in order?
Rescue mission is Sunday so Brunch somewhere near Dunners on the way down for anyone whos keen (your shout! lol), will be myself and Bent51, its a cage trip due to needing a trailer :)
Cheers all for your help and stuff... Jenny knows it was pure luck this happened close to the rally site, could have been in the dark somewhere near Milton on a Friday night!! (Not that Milton looked too scary :shit: ) Your great people, prepared to go out of your way to help, thanks again. Awesome!

Real sorry to hear about your off Winston, but good to hear the damage to your good self isn't permanent. Get well mate and back on the road again. It wouldn't be the same at the southern rallies without you to poke fun at. I guess you'll have to get those repairs done to the bike now, that we keep reminding you about :dodge:
Will see you at the Vincent unless you venture to a rally further north before then.

Apparently his business partner is the Chair of Southland District Health Board so he's probably miffed at the use of resources.

After having a personal conversation with the dealer,
You think, I guess as I do that 2000kms ago during the service the dealers staff should have noticed the chain was dry then and made a note to show the customer how to adjust the chain, or at least scheduled a visit, and sold the customer some chain lube.
I have added a comma to make this more legible and easier to understand for all, and I am assured that this chap has shown the owner how to lube and adjust a chain. He does stand by his products as a good dealer should and attempt to look after his customers.
I would add that the chain I saw tonight is considerably dryer than it was when I handled it on the day, although it is the same chain which imho could be confusing the problem.

Ahh he's one of those, politicians, the hospital gets paid by ACC, which as a motorcyclist Winston has been banking money into for years, that other politicians have been squandering for as many years.
Actually he's possibly a hell of a nice bloke just caught unaware's by the media and quoted in part, still needs a kick in the arse for say it though, instead of, dam he's a fine chap and I don't understand how this could have happened.

I'm glad it looks like the dealer isn't as bad as the poor bugger has been painted, but I'm curious as to how a chain can become "considerably dryer" in less than a week, especially when most of that time it was in a plastic bag?

Wrong type of oil maybe...
Jenny
24th September 2009, 12:28
yesss, the oil was bike chain lube..also used by fellow riders leaving at same time (and at other occasions) I suppose next it will be the chain broke because I'm blonde too! The chain was 1st dragged along a new gravelly dry road, then handled by mmmm I guess 20 or 30 people, on and off ground at Balclutha Suzuki this may count for some loss of lube!

I went to see him today. He's flat on his back, high on pain killers, but in good humour.
