Well I've been stuck at home with a bout of the flu for the past 1+ 1/2 weeks and I'm gettin really bored!!:whocares: almost happy to go back to work!
Anyway it's about halfway thru Winter and the first rally is the Pissed Penguin and it's not too far away<_<!!
It's one rally that I've never done before but everything I hear about it is good! so...I'm gonna head down to the land of blue & gold; speights; and where they all roll their "R"s etc (inbreeding I'm told!!) and give it a shot:2guns: Actually I'm not sure if Kaka Point is in Otago or Southland:whocares:
As long as they have Export or anything apart from Speights I'll be happy:mellow:
Hopefully see you all there:done:

Map as asked for. Balclutha is easy to find. Follow the bikes to the coastal township of Kaka point.(Well signposted) The Rally site is a few km's on the south side of the town.

The shaded route in from the southern end is gravel. The turn off to Kaka Point, off the road to Owaka (a big sign), is just past the Telford farm training institute. (also well signposted)

Emlyn, Kerry and and I were just talking about things and think possibly we might head down to Dunedin on the Friday and stay at the camping ground (http://www.jasons.com/New-Zealand/Dunedin/Dunedin-Holiday-Park), the accommodation is not 5 star there but none the less a pleasant stop and affordable.

Given that info I can not recommend the camping ground in Balclutha, we rode in to there on the way back from the Burt, the guy took one look at us and must have decided to attempt to fleece us, (or he did not want dirty motorcyclists in the place), the prices instantly doubled over the published rates and all sorts of extras came out of the wood work, no I never told him I had the latest Jason book in my back.

No need for a map. Just head south and once you pass over the bridge at Balclutha take every road to the left except "No exit" ones. You can't miss it.

:weep::weep:This is the first rally of the season and I'm not going to be there, I was 3rd person on site last year, and met mad irishman Tom, (wonder what part of the world he is biking in now)..........sat on the beach smoked a splif, drank shit loads of beer and partied the night away.....and that was just the first night. I friggin love this rally, its set in a spectacular scenery and has got my vote with moraki as being the A1 Southern places to get to.

The Penguins Organisers do an awesome job and are as freindly as they come.

Sorry guys going to have to tell you again, I am going to miss you dudes so much its unbelieveable, biking over here, runs through my veins, its in my head its all I think about, and plan for, and am sick as the sickest pig to leave the scene.

Do me a favour at the Penguin, I'm going to be at my first British Rally in Bristol, so raise your glass to me and I'll raise a glass right back at ya and lets do a phone call eh, and I'll cry all over the phone........you can bet that'll happen, may even try to get a video phone to show the scene I'm in.

Ciao for now, from a Sad Woodybee, wish they had a smile for a sad little yellow man kicking a stone with his hands in his pockets, coz thats how I feel right now:(.

For those that have not been down this way. The turn off to Owaka (and Kaka Point) on the main street of Balclutha. Signposted for "The Southern Senic Highway". Turn left here.(pic 1)

On the highway at Telford farm training Institute (thats it on the right) ... Turn left here. (pic 2)

The rally site is on the other side of the pine trees on the right. Look out for the armco bridge. Slow down to turn right just past (at) trees. (pic 3)

Looking back towards Kaka Point. (pic 4)

Nice and wide it is too - but still littered with camper-vans and tourists at times so be careful.

Oh, and if coming in from the Owaka end watch that left-turn into the start of the gorge, - along a straight, over a blind hill and there it is.:shit:

At a Clutha Council meeting last week we briefly discussed the need for an official opening of this newly sealed piece of road (which does complete a pretty important tourist loop). I suggested the 19th Sept as being an ideal date - only one of the other councillors (from Owaka) picked up on the significance of the date and was very quick to support it as a great idea!! I have offered to take the major through the ribbon on the back of the KTM and on the back wheel for added effect (with Juno on the back you could wheelie anything!!):sunny: and suggested there could be a few hundred bikers following behind
I saw the CEO writing it in his diary so with any luck it will happen and they will contact the organisers so they can plan it as part of the group ride

I got this message in an email today :

The date has now been set for the official opening of the new seal for the Ahuriri Flat/Karoro Creek Roads which connect the Owaka Highway to Willsher Bay near Kaka Point.

The date is SATURDAY 19 SEPTEMBER at 1.00 pm to coincide with the motor cycle Penguin Rally. The ribbon will be cut on the road by the Willsher Bay Domain after which there will be a mass drive through of the motor bikes taking part in the rally. The proceedings will then move to the Kaka Point Hall for afternoon tea.

This is a good chance to get some good positive publicity about bikers and the benefits a community gets from us and rallies - so please spread the word and join the ride through the ribbon.
Next step will be trying to stimulate some TV coverage - working on that now

My new trumpy guys and Worcester Club Dudes seem friendly enough, but wish I was there partyig on with you guys, look out for that phone call on your ride out on Saturday, will sort it out with Xaria, so hopefully can talk to a few of you at a poignant pretimed moment, on my Friday night your Satur...day......

No I won't be cutting the ribbon - sounds like someone is trying to organize a couple of those Spyder Trike things for the Major and our local MP (who just happens to also be the Minister of Finance) to ride through (only needs a car license I suppose, and no chance of the indignity of falling off!) - but thats top secret so don't tell anyone eh !! - anyway they will be doing the ribbon thing.

TV may well have some people there - I suspect as a human interest story they will probably take more interest in the rally than the road thing but we'll see what happens if they turn up.

Whadya mean you can't make the ride?? - and as for making an appearance I hope SD isn't bringing you down in the WORK car is he ???

My old ducati used to sometimes suck water down the crankcase breather , if I got to keen with the hose when washing it and do a similar thing . Can ya see the oil level? When the last time filter was done?

The last time the oil and filter was done was this afternoon. 75 kms later and its a mess :(, however I suspect the oil is possibly ok, the oil pump maybe the issue, and what is annoying me is I used to own a gauge and fittings but they disappeared from my tool box.

Me thinks someone is very lucky I had not seen this before I left of his hammock may have been booby trapped (no not boob trapped get your mind outta the gutter).

We made it there and back, the sight glass is still cloudy but I dont think it any issue with a leak from the cooling system, more the crankcase is not breathing correctly, will have to get my hands dirty to find out.

Was a great weekend, Friday night at Chez Scumdog, what great hosts, the a pootle to the sight to set up the tent etc, whilst in the middle of this a Cantab rabble lass comes rolling into camp, broken chain, I wont go into all the details but lets just say a dealer is getting a bad reputation, I hope he reads this a wakes up a little, (time will tell), anyhow props to the Suzuki dealer in Balclutha who helped with a chain, and to all the folks who lent tools and input to getting this bike running so it could be got out of the site and to a safe location (hmm Scumdog is not only hosting KB'ers but bikes as well).

I believe all had a good night, however I came home with one packed of Penguins folks, its just not right to have to carry them back home again.

Now just looking forward to the Magpie, where Kerry will be on her bike (well her bike will have functional exhaust, the rest is up to her sitting a test), and we get to spend time in the company of you all again.

Anyway 1000km from a dealer service, someone never tightened up axle nut enough after adjusting the chain , causing the adjusting blocks to take the load and fail big time, then ya chain as well. Your lucky you didn't get tossed down the road . dig ya heels in jenny , they should fix it.

I was talking to someone about having to hot glue the clasps shut on the pins to stop them opening. The ones that have the pin (the type on the penguin badge) that comes straight out the back of the badge are the worst for falling off.

Shrek gave me a good tip for those though. Once you have the badge where you want it, bend the clippy bits out flat and they stay on much better.

Still it shouldn't have happened. One would have expected the chain to be all rusty and dry if it hadn't been regularly oiled so I would still try to get the bike fixed under warrantee and dont take no for an answer.

I must have been the only one to get a full nights sleep at Chez Scumdog!!
I didn't wake up until the :sunny:

started uploading my photos to facebook last night. being such a time consuming thing I had a DVD going to pass the time with while the files tried to upload. The first two time I got the 'failed to upload' message. the third time I kinda fell asleep. lesson? watching the DVD is ok while you kill time, just don't do it in bed.

Result: no photos in the album yet and now I have maintainance night to go to. Speedo keeps failing (since just outside of East Taieri on the way home...)

I was talking to someone about having to hot glue the clasps shut on the pins to stop them opening. The ones that have the pin (the type on the penguin badge) that comes straight out the back of the badge are the worst for falling off.

LOL it was me you were talking to but its actually the badge off of my bike I meant. the one that goes along the side.... Dang hard to find a replacement one using google as well...

as for the photos How the heck do you decide which ones to use... :innocent:

Hey Dudes and Dudess's

I was watching the weather and it looked amazing, and from the few photos I have seen looked like the rally looked like its normal fun time.

Really missed being there with you all, tried in vain to get a video phone, got a couple of Paula at Scummy's place, and realised when no more texts came that you were all at the rally, then I feel asleep clutching my phone and dreaming of Kaka Point, woke up to Fabulous Sunshine on the Sunday here, it was roasintg hot, got up to 23 degs at one stage.............so got my mountina bike out and went for a blast... and thought of you all feeling fatigued as anything..at that point I didn;t envy you.

Well, I got me first UK Rally coming up this weekend, and having to drive there, as my bike is getting new tyre, chain sproket and battery, least I have the wage to cover it working over here I guess, so all booked in for tail end of next week. Woohoo, fuck I can;t wait.

Four wheels will get me there, but will bounce into the site and meet and greet my fellow rally goers and see what the crack is over here.....watch this space

Yours jealously

a Cantab rabble lass comes rolling into camp, broken chain, I wont go into all the details but lets just say a dealer is getting a bad reputation, I hope he reads this a wakes up a little, (time will tell).

It's a real shame when something like that happens, it spoils the fun knowing your bike is injured, but I have just had a look at the broken chain concerned, and it's rusty and dry. My guess is the last time it saw chain lube was at service time (over 2000 km ago), and I'd say that was the last time it was adjusted. The dealer concerned can hardly be held to account for anything except perhaps not reminding the lass concerned to regularly lube her chain, and maybe all customers need to be reminded to check oil, tyre pressures and chain regularly.

I guess it's a sign of the times. Modern cars don't need anything but petrol, and I can imagine it would be easy to think that bikes are the same. Bit of a bugger all the same and it doesn't stop the frustration of a breakdown.

Haven't got a BMW one have you

Good to know that you all got home safely... Had a good time at my first rally but really :cold: sleeping in the tent without my heater beside me :crybaby:
Shrek will post photos soon
Nice to meet some of the people he talks about too

Did you see the adjuster that has sheared, potentially due to poor casting (not the dealers fault), causing the wheel to be allowed to slip forward on one side?

Did you realise the dealer had promised said lass AA membership 10 months ago?

You think I guess as I do that 2000kms ago during the service the dealers staff should have noticed the chain was dry then and made a note to show the customer how to adjust the chain, or at least scheduled a visit, and sold the customer some chain lube.

Surely and this is just my pondering here, you have made the sale, you want a happy customer as they return and buy gear, lube, service etc from you, during the course of the sale you have learned the rider is new and inexperienced, why for gods sake do you not give them a facts sheet, and explain the maintenance schedule to them, offer them a session showing basic maintenance like how to lube a chain, check tyres etc.

Firstly: The chain had been tightened aprox 800k's ago at KB's maintenence night under mechanics supervision.
Second: I have lubed the chain regularly which fellow bikers witnessed, including prior to leaving CHch for PP.
Third: Phil from dealers HAD shown me how to tighten and lube chain, which advice I have followed.
Fourth: of the many many bikers who looked at bike at PP's, none commented on dry or rusty chain.
I am not intending to cause ill feeling or disrepute, I just want my bike so I can ride!!!
