Super successful people seemingly HAVE to be a cock of some fashion or other.

You can see why he worked so well with the son of Britain's greatest pre-war fascist after a comment like that.

Thing is, you have to get through the reflexive hand-wringing that any mention of Hitler gets...

He's right. Hitler got things done. Most people might object to what the did, but he certainly got it done.

It's a reflex worth sponsorship.

Yes, but there's the risk that by recoiling in horror, we don't look and learn from the mistakes of history.

Just going "OhMyGod it's so terrible" doesn't count as learning btw... :)

The only people reflexively hand-wringing are the Germans and the Brits. The majority of the world's population probably fits into the, "Hitler? Who?" camp.

In one way he is, of course, right. Things do get done when you have a totalitarian regime. The question is whether it's the right things that get done and if the fact that things get done is worth the price of diminished civil liberties.

A dictatorship would work just fine, if you could find the perfect person - benign, compassionate, intelligent, assertive, etc but completely devoid of desire for personal gain. Doesn't sound like any person I've ever met or heard off - but maybe if we ever develop proper AI...

There's been one in modern times. Mohandas Ghandi. Sadly, those attributes were very obviously not a genetic gift.

He got shit done without being a dictator too...

Ghandi's ideal was as far removed from a totalitarian regime as it is possible to imagine.

A dictatorship is the second most effective form of government. Provided the dictator is smart, and not too wacky, it can work very well. Unfortunately, most tend to be corrupted by the power, or have personality disorders to start with.

He just stated the obvious really, irrespective of the very unpalatable things Hitler did. He was ( in a perverse sort of way ) right about Saddam Hussein too, the only guy that could keep that basket case of a country together.
Bernie is old enough and wealthy enough that he can take the rebound. The same for Max Mosley, 70 years old and wealthy enough to employ a few hookers in nazi regalia. Lucky man, and he has worked for it!
Personally I dont Bernie is a cock for one moment. Hes a very successful man whose machine employs a LOT of people. I applaud him for that and I also applaud him for being totally un PC.
Id be interested in his views on Slobodan Milosevic, there are schools of thought that he was actually doing the world a favour in eradicating moslems.

He is, yeah.

You have to realise there is a very specific and rare personality type at work here though. Genuine sociopaths. Very very smart people who honestly feel not one drop of compassion towards the rest of the species. We are just there to be played with, manipulated, and used towards aims as dispassionately as one might enjoy squirting crap off the house with a pressure jet.

These people are, unsurprisingly, often very successful. Bernie Ecclestone owns the most expensive sport in the world. Owns it, the actual sport itself. Fuck me. Hitler took a country that had the been having the living shit kicked out of it for twenty years and persuaded it's inhabitants that they should take the world by force. They nearly did too. They are the same personality type and they tend to achieve greatness or almost literally die trying (and piss a whole bunch of people off in the process).

I've met one, and maybe now a second who I've not decided about yet. They're out there and they scare the crap out of me.

Whilst it is correct that Hitler "got things done" the problem of course with that approach is that decisions NOT made by at least a reasonably popular consensus frequently come undone in one way or another (Hitler and Hussein are but 2 examples). The aftermath can also be a hell of a mess, undoing a lot or all of what was achieved.
It is short sighted to believe that decisions made in this manner produce the best outcomes - or are you really a klark supporter?

Having now read the full transcript of Bernies interview I have even more respect for the guy. The guy has worked real hard for where he has got, has got both feet firmly planted on the ground and clearly doesnt suffer fools. He also shares a common respect for Margaret Thatcher. I like that and all power to him.

I disagree, the hair is of rather less consequence to him than if he was a pretty boy. I bet in percentage terms he also spends rather less on his hair than the average pretty boy, adjudged against income.
Winston Churchill also had rather bad hair, he had bigger fish to fry.

Gordon Harcourt has Chris Amon as a quest on National Radio this saturday morning which should provide some interesting insights into the current situation in F1. Amon had extensive dealings with Moseley driving for him when he established March. If you miss it the show will be downloadable from

or Andy Warhol...
I wonder if Bernie was holding the camera.

Its questionable whether Hitler got anything done other than initiate the Holocaust and an expansionist and unrealistic view of foriegn policy.

His mastery was in facilitating a mass of beleaguered minds who had either grown up under Bismark or who had suffered territorial losses and had inherited reperations post WW1. The masses were motivated to get things done....anything. The Depression was the spark he needed to put his mass communications 101 learning and Mein Kampf into action.

In a lot of ways, terrible to say this I suppose, but apart from the fact that Vlad the Impaler got taken away and persuaded to do things that I have no idea whether he wanted to do or not, he was in the way that he could command a lot of people, able to get things done.

Yeah, it's a pity he decided to impale the entire aristocratic class of his country (20,000 of them, men, women & children) but I have no idea whether he wanted to do that or not. And he was able to command a lot of people.
