Mine was my current VFR400. Took it on the gravel roads behind the Wellington turbine. That was great fun.
Keen to get something a little more suitable though, like a ZX10R.

CT110. Learnt to ride on it chasing sheep around the farm and jumping boarder dykes. Old man put his back out (slipped a disk) on it one year just as lambing was finishing so I had to drench the 3000 lambs that year - I was 11.
The first bike I ever owned was a 87 XL250R. First road legal bike was a 96 DR250 Djebel.

1989 GSXR250RR-K
It took me to several Cold Kiwi's, from Hamilton to the Brass Monkey and back, 90 mile beach up the stream at the top and to the Cape Reinga lighthouse several times when it was still 40km's of corrogated gravel and all points in between.
My first 'proper' adventure bike was a 1981 R80G/S, not the one I currently own.

ok so my actual first adv Machine was probably a trike, as for my first motorised 2 wheeled Machine it was this. So who can guess what it is?
1972 Yamaha CT2,brand new.I crashed off road with an identical bike in the first week.Bounced it off the side of a Trekka at 60mph after 3 weeks.Tore two slots down the side of the Trekka with clutch lever and gearlever.I rode the bike home, but it had bent the frame.....and squashed my foot so bad I had to get it x rayed...no damage.Had a lot of fun and rode it pretty hard on and off road....we rode everywhere we could in those days. One of the reasons you guys can't ride anywhere these days - we rode on the volcano's of Auckland,Winstones Quarry, and open land that are now various suburbs of Auckland, covered in houses.Beaches,Woodhill Forest before it was a bike park, and Riverhead forest too.Bought an International AS110,stripped our bikes down and transported them to riding areas.Lent it to a mate one day - 3 weeks later I asked where it was...''Oh,I gave it to **** to use for a while....do you want it back?''

Rode it everywhere, plenty of gravel & 4wd tracks, usually loaded up with camping gear for the weekend. At the time, didn't know 'adventure' existed as a category. I just rode my bike where I wanted to go. 40,000km in 18 months  but usually had a sheepy on it. Wish I still had it. :ride:

Boarder Dykes (http://www.livingheritage.org.nz/schools/primary/duntroon/irrigation/border-dykes.php).
Actually I've just read that link and it is crap. Bloody hard to open the gate to flood the next down stream section. Normally close a gate to flood the next upstream section. Sills are not clocks they are the boards that control when the water starts flooding out into the paddock. The clocks were for closing the gates. Sheesh! ;)

I'm still not sure what possessed me to ride the KRR150 on gravel. It really wasn't the tool for the job, but I found myself doing increasingly long sections of gravel on it (and dodgy adventure-driveways to Clint's various residences).

Hell, Joe, I learned to drive on a Gnat. 197 Villiers 2-stroke motor. You stopped it and re-started with the motor running backwards for reverse. 4 forward speeds, 4 reverse. No charging system, but electric start, so the thing had to go on the battery charger every few days. Bloody brilliant across swamps, with those huge floaty tyres and the flat pan of a chassis.
Learned to ride on a rigid Mountain Goat with a Suzuki 80 motor. Fibreglass tank, the whole thing was about the size bike of a kid's toy. Went most places, including over my shoulder up hills several times.
My first "adventure" bike was a '61 Triumph Thunderbird. Won my first competition event on that pile of crap, too - a gravel road hillclimb. It had a massive first gear, and I never needed to get higher than 2nd in that hillclimb.
Great thread.

Mate, it was some no-brand BMX when I was about 4. We lived at Tihoi and if anyone knows Tihoi...well, enough said. My mum used to take me riding along cattle tracks in the surrounding farms. Can't do too much on a BMX but the downhill bits were great. I used to ride everywhere till I's about 5 or so then we moved to Hamilton. Used to ride around half the city...moved to Katikati and there was this thing called a "mountain bike" that people were starting to ride. Tarini Alpine it was, with a massive 21 gears! Thrashed the bejesus out of that bike. Not much didn't get replaced on it.
Then in my teenage years I had other bikes and would often just get on and ride it...ride from Kati to the Mount or Whangamata to go for a swim, ride over Thompsons Track to the Waikato for a look. Come back fucken starving, fall into bed, sleep.
Joined the army - they give you guns and 4WD's and armoured vehicles to go adventuring in. Mostly out the back of Waiouru and through the central plateau. Sometimes over in Afghanistan we would end up exploring kabul city by 4WD, sidearms at the ready and GPS tracking our route.
Adventure kinda dried up a bit after getting married so whilst sitting in my business suit on the Wellington waterfront eating freshly shot goat curry with an ex-army mate we decided we'd get motorbikes. DR250.
Life is an adventure. Always been on 2 wheels.

use to ride a DS80 around the farm when i was a young fella, bought my first ADV bike with my first job after leaving school at 15, Honda XL250 i think she was a 79-80 twin shocker, it was a great warm up to my next bike 82 DR500:scooter:, seen alot of action with that bike(no commitments back then) rode everywhere. hopefully get some of that back when the kids bugger of:woohoo:
1958 Morris Minor 1000 rego AC7247
Took it everywhere, usually full of mates - Lake Sumner, Le Bons Bay to Little Akaloa without using any roads - the list goes on.
Where the car wouldn't carry us, we carried the car. Didn't like deep water much though.
Poor little thing - what a hiding it took. I broke the crankshaft one morning and drove it about 45 km with a broken crank.
I think it was on its third gearbox when I finally sold it in Christchurch. I spotted the same car 6 years later in Papatoetoe, still bloody going.

Dad rode an old James Motorcycle, once that was unfit for the road it became the farm bike and went quite well.
I learnt to ride on that, I was also a late bloomer. I didn't get my licence until three years ago.
The GN250 took me everywhere until I could get the bigger ponies....

Learned to ride a Honda CT125.
First bike was a 1972 CB125, purchased 1981. Took that beast trail riding through a forestry, & climbing sand dunes at Foxton Beach. Sold it shortly after I blew the exhaust header off mucking around in sand. Didn't seem to impact on performance, but was LOUD. The next owner commented that it did its gearbox shortly after I sold it.
Graduated to a 1974 GT125. Sounded like a vaccum cleaner on song, & a bag full of nails when I sold it. That bike didn't like trail riding at all.
First real trail bike was an '84 XR350 (dual carb).

Aah , the old gnat , now that brings back memories . My uncle had one and I did a bit of adventuring on that, along with the pushbikes and dads 3 landrovers that we got our off-road fun on , we didnt have motorbikes or horses as dads family was staunchly anti motorbike and horse due to unpleasant previous experiences.
Learnt to ride on some sort of road bike 360cc around the streets of the North shore when I was 15, 3 up with a couple of mates, how I never fell off I'll never know.
Then I got a DR400 back before the kids were born (oldest is 18) had it for a couple of months.
Then got an F650 about 3 months before the 08 Dusty butt.
The rest is history

First real adventure bike was a 79 Dt175, fantastic bike used to ride it up and down the beach in Greymouth, then when I got a license we used to do miles and miles of the gravel roads out the back of Grey and Kumara. Graduated to an IT175j and just did the same but faster, raced it a bit too.

Joe - you look like a young Tex Morten on that horse.
My first "adv" bike was a BSA 350 that not only had a vicious kick-back but also had the annoying habit of ripping off the front mud guard when mud built up on the tyre. The two XL250 Motosports that followed were dream machines in comparison.

Being a life long Jaffa, we didn't have that many gravel roads around so adventure biking wasn't really on the cards unless you count bicycles thru the new subdivisions. The earliest gravel and motorcycles I can remember was on a Ducati 750GT with clip-ons & rear sets in the late 70's around northland. I don't recall it being a very fun experience.

My first bike was a 1974 Yamaha DT60, we had an empty section next door to us with a big dirt pile in the middle and i used to ride untill the bike ( and lawnmower ) had no gas left in it.
A few years later i progressed to my 1st registered bike whick was a 1977 XL175 which had a 230 poweroll big bore kit fitted with hot cams. I was 13-14 at the time and that thing used to regularly kick back when starting and sometimes lift me off the seat :argh:

After the old man put his back out on the CT110 he got a Suzuki LT250 2wd Quad (still sitting in the shed but who wants to ride about on 4 wheels). Not long after we got it, the curious 11 year old that I was, though I'd see how well it went in mud and through the boarder dyke head races (no comments necessary Mark). Got onto the head race OK but the mud in the base was about a foot deep and the quad wouldn't climb out (steep slippery side). OK go along the race till I get to a flatter bit - couple of hours latter there was a very very muddy quad and I was shattered from pushing the bloody thing. Finally got it out so took off to the nearest water trough and started trying to wash it so the old man didnt figure out what I'd been doing to it. I didnt manage to clean it very well so got found out and was banded from riding it for about another 6 monts. He wasn't too pleased about his new $6k ish quad being covered in mud. I was back to the CT110 for a while.

I was out at the farm on Saturday, getting firewood, so thought I'd dig out my 2nd bike. I would get the hand-me-down farm bikes when I was young, and they spent more time in pieces than running.
Mismatched tank. Dog chewed seat. Chopper style bars (looks like it's been dropped about 63 times on each side).
Started second kick. Couldn't believe it.
