View Full Version : Power of a 250 vs supersport

This isn't an OMG THE POWER thread, although it might turn to that after a few posts..
This is a thread for people looking to upgrade from a 250 to a 600/750 (supersports)
Now I can't speak from a total 1st hand experience but I have a Hyo 250R, not fast at all, and as most people like to, I like to go on the net and read reviews about bikes I can't afford or can’t get.
There is one particular instance which made me a bit confused.
Now before I get started let me tell you that I AM in fact aware that the riders doing the reviews are superb and would actually notice teensy weensy changes to a bike set up/cc rating.
But back to my story, I read a review about an 07 zx6r where they complained that it didn't crack 100 horses. . .
FUCKIN SO WHAT!!!???? most 250's don’t crack 35-40!!! Then they go on to say the 636 version is much better... what I didn't disclose earlier is that I have had the privilege to ride (down the street) an 06 and 07 zx6r. The 06's lights and overall bodywork look way better and are quite a bit more comfy, and coming from a 250 point of view I hardly noticed a difference compared to their “SLOW” 599cc bike.
So those of you, like myself, who like "on paper” stats 10 or 20 horses don't make that much of a difference in the grand scheme of things, especially going from 30hp to 100hp haha.
I hope I can open a couple of people’s eyes to this,
but of course in the true KB spirit I have to say "go out and ride it for yourself before you make a desicision" haha :clap:

By the way, reviews get hits based on hype... so by saying that a bike is 'lacking in power' compared to another bike they are simply nit picking in order to piss some people off and get more people to read the reviews. Did they by any chance mention a department in which the 07 ZX6R was exceptional?

Better? haha (it was real hard to read aye?)
and yea the brakes handling and gearbox are all great, so all the parts that actually matter, but most young people, including myself, like the idea of power, even if we can't even use 1/5 of it,

I went from an old Honda CBR250RR to an old Honda CBR600F. When I first took it on the motorway on ramp, OMG the power! It was like sensory overload.
I've never had a chance to ride a real powerfull bike, and as I don't tend to push things, probably wouldn't notice the difference 10 to 20hp (who still talks in hp? I like to use kw myself, don't even have a feel for the hp scale anymore).
So just enjoy the difference when you get a newer bigger bike There is always going to be a newer more faster bike somewhere, so enjoy the one you are with!

Not all of them are. Often they are also biased, if they get kickbacks from one manufacturer.
I don't read the reviews much at all, and paper stats doesn't mean much either. Ride them, and pick the one you like. :niceone:

I upgraded from a revvy RG150 to a torquey SV1000(S) :bleh: The RG is fun to ride and has enough go for most things but once you taste instant torque its like - heroin :drool: - you are hooked instantly.
Further to this, having been on a couple of group rides I noticed that even at slightly above our insainly fast speed limit (yeah right) all bikes over 599 CC are similar in performance. Sure the R1 will pull away from the SV and the SV will (probably) out pace a R6 on the straights, but the differential isn't that big. I be wrong when it comes to riding with BUSA's and ZX14, but from what I have heard its not like they are 2X as fast.
Which reminds me. On friday I had to run some errands and the wifes Scorpio needed some air in the tires. So I took it out in stead of the SV. I had fun on it. Hitting top gear at 50kph was a strange feeling, but flicking it around corners was fun - doing the full rossy thing, but I think its impossible to get a knee down on that thing ;)
Anyway, after my fun ride I noticed that I forgot to return one of the videos so I jumped on the SV. Immediately its far more solid, less flickable, but having the torque back was wonderful :clap:. I came back through some twisty roads parked the bike, took off my helmet and there was a grin on my face. Later when I told my wife about it I said, riding the Scorpio was fun, but the SV was exhilarating. :ride:

I almost killed myself, twice actually, riding the R6 which I ended up buying as my first 'big bike'. There is a lot to be 'tamed' with a supersport bike, the first thing is the rider.
Respect the power, and remember that the throttle works both ways.

When your comparing high spec 600cc sportbikes which are meant to be competitive in term of power handling etc you would expect that anything that a certain bike is lacking to be picked up quickly.

You probably wouldnt notice much at all if you just rode it down the street!

Depends on what you're comparing it to. 10-20hp on a Hyosung will be pretty damn noticeable, 10-20hp on a ZX-14 or similar may make a difference although not as marked as the initial example.

No if you read my post like I intended it to be, I said that the power differences isn't a huge deal when moving to a supersports from a 250.... and hopefully I'm helping someone not miss out on a good bike by only focussing on the power.
MM your red text isn't the point I was trying to get across, like you said, "when comparing 600cc bikes..." like I said, my point is to compare a 250 to a 600 and that power isn't the only thing to look for.
Just trying to help...

I think you have to compare on the following points.
1. Suspension / handling
2. Acceleration
3. Braking
4. Top speed
I'd probably put them in the above order too.
The SV650 has about 2.5 times the torques and 2 x the horsepower of our VTR250. At 74hp (not rear wheel) and 60+Nm of torque it certainly meets points 2. and 4. for me. The suspension is crap and brakign is ok.
My next bike I'll choose on handling / ride comfort above all out torque and power figures.
The best way I can compare acceleration between the VTR250 and SV650 - is the VTR250 feels like an elastic band slowly increasing your speed. With the SV650 - it's like being snapped and 10 - 20km/hour just disappear somewhere (ie. was going 50... but now and I don't know how, I'm doing 70).

Horsepower doesn't really matter. It's more just for safety and pleasure. Any bike will go "quick" on the road. I followed a 150cc four-stroke around for a couple of hours today, and I had to think.
Even upgrading the rear shock on the GT250R makes it much quicker, that is. you can push it through the corners without it skipping around and biting you. Upgrade the front and its plenty fast. Acceleration remains the same, but confidence and competance goes through the roof.
Move to a FZR400RR and it feels very similar, until you get the engine over 8,000rpm and then its plenty cool, but not a revelation, and tractability remains the same.. around town its a bit snatchy. The suspension isn't noticeably better, but the brakes are.
Move up to a GT650R and it's snatchy, snarly, and bitey around town, and you will be glad for all the slow-speed balance, clutch slipping, first gear finding, and u-turn practice you did before you upgraded. Full throttle it in second and third gear, and it is a revelation alright.
Move to a FJ1200 and its a whopping wave of torque that initally feels completely over the top. Any little bump in the road changes your power setting, with vast consequences for your ground speed. Fuck knows what you are meant to do should this happen mid-corner.
Seriously, the more I think about it, super-sport bikes are only going to be on the road for one purpose, and that is to belt around at lightspeed on them. It baffles me how they are even legal.. Even my little 650 korean vtwin will make a complete mockery of the law and of common sense on the road..
What I'm saying is, it doesn't really matter what you ride, as long as it appeals to you. Ride lots of bikes, and just enjoy them - if you do, or sell them if you don't. More and more people I talk to enjoy all sorts of bikes, not just their litre bike.

Its all in the wrist au.....my r6 is like a 250 'till you get to about 6 grand, then from then on its definitely a super sport...
Id recommend it as an upgrade,(to a supersport 6hundy)) as you can nana about on it quite happily.
But if you start nailing a grunty bike you do gotta have your wits about you ,as braking hard & making a corner is way different at around 2hundy than 140.
But I reckon in the twisties Id be nearly as fast on my old bros 650 with 50hp
than the 100 odd of the r6,so its not all about grunt at times ,iis all about style darling...
