View Full Version : Disposing of ammunition - help please

Hi all
Been clearing out my dad's stuff and I came across some .22 ammunition. He got rid of the firearms some time ago so I can only guess this is old ammo.
I'm not licensed and don't own a gun so I want to get rid of it responsibly and I'm guessing I can take it to the police, but I just wanted to ask the firearms owners here if there is any other way to get rid of it or if that was the right course of action.
Obviously not something we want falling into the wrong hands or just laying around in/on a land fill
any help appreciated

I'd take it to a gun shop prolly or to the coppers if the shop don't want it...

That is a serious suggestion. You can safely burn ammunition. The military does it this way by usually throwing rounds into a large incinerator. It is quite common to shovel large amounts of ammo in at once. It just goes "pop!".
The round is not surrounded by steel, so doesn't have the capacity to put energy in one direction.

Got a pot belly stove? You know you want to.. ;)
Three or four at a time please, not the whole box. We used to do it with 303's.
Do not do it with a glass-front fireplace. Thank you! :nono:

Don't do what I did as a kid and put them in the incinerator.... I've never seen my dad run so fast as the day he lit it after I'd done that!!! :dodge::laugh:

Ring the police and speak to the local firearms officer.
Or ring the local gun club, and make a donation.

.22 shells in STRONG METAL incinerator will just go "pop, dink, splat, spit.." Try a .303 ;) BEWM!!!!! LOL!!!
Gelignite is even more fun, but NOT in or near ANYTHING metal or glass - BAD! Nah seriously I don't know how I am still alive after all the stupid stunts I have pulled over the years. Fucken funny though, and some great stories and memories.
Safety glasses are good idea.

I reckon a few of the KB firearm owners here that are near you could pop over and take them off your hands (they having rifles to dispose of them! :msn-wink:)

Even .22LR rounds pack a punch. I shot my mates VL Commodore with my .22LR rifle from the side of the boot and it went in one end of the car and out the other. I then shot the drivers door and the slug got stuck in the drivers door handle which is quite thick. I wouldn't recommend burning them.

Repeat after me.... OBTURATION !
Not always provided by steel though.

OBTURBATION...
Yeah, just give (or sell) it to someone with a firearms license... Make sure you sight the license first! Depending on flavour, it's about $6 - 10 per box of 50 rounds at the shops.

If it is Stirling brand there will be no danger. No more than shaken cola

Yeah, but we do it under controlled conditions. it's real easy to fuck yourself up if you don't have the training or the gear. For Small Arms Ammo we have special reinforced steel incinerators, so if you do it in a 44 gallon drum you can still get shot, despite what the others on this thread reckon.
Pass it in to the cops. It's bloody dangerous.

Not quite the whole back yard. The 'incinerator' was a 44 gallon drum that was a bit buggered so the pellets were firing all over the place. Not sure what the bullets were (I was like 13) but they were in one of those casing type things and when you shoot it, loads of pellets come out...???

Got a big box of rimfire cartridges you don't need?
Get some Blu-Tack and lay them along some railway tracks. Fun for the whole family!

Get a gun. Then dispose of them one at a time....

Take them to the shop, they will have info on gun clubs.Think this is a grey area re arms code, the licence owner dies and weapons/ammo on premises of unlicenced person, against the law.Going to shop means they can give you idea of value to a club as well.
And I just got a visit from local arms officer not 30 minutes ago,gun safe is fine 4 locks, professional made aluminium, but need to place securely in shed or cupboard with padlock, not under bed or wardrobe lol.He was impressed with the 4 legged burglar deterent.

Can only ditch ammo in "deep water", over 300 fathoms if I recall correctly.

You are breaking the law just by having them in your possession if you don't have a firearms licence. Take them to the cop shop and they will pass them on to the army for disposal.
As far as selling them goes, probably not worth it as .22LR ammo is only about 10c per round retail.

Get one of those firearms owners who have already asked, to take it off your hands. Once it has passed into their hands (after seeing their licence) it is legally owned again.
