Ride what you like and can afford. Don't buy into the brand shit.

Don't spend $4000 on a bike, then $200 on gear expecting it to work in a crash.Second hand is good if it is in excellent condition,a second hand leather jacket is fine and better than new designer t shirt and jandels.

test ride
buy what you are comfortable on - looks aren't everything
learn some basic maintenance and don't economise on tyres
insure your bike
survival is down to luck - and the more you practise the luckier you will get
be aware that many other road users won't see you ... and you have no way of
knowing which ones do and which don't .... so be cautious of them all!
try to avoid throwing up whilst wearing a full-face helmet

It is very easy to turn excitment and enthusiasm into fear and and uncertainty. Take it one step at a time by getting proper instruction.
Good luck.

1. If you are at the front at the lights, spend one second looking both ways just as you start to move off. Hopefully you will spot the person running through on the red. Look to your right first, then left.
2. I ride on the right hand side of the right lane of the motorway. This means I can see past the cars in front of me, it is easy to take to the gap between the car in front and the barrier in an urgent stop situation to stop getting hit from behind, it avoids the oils and liquids and rubbish that end up in the middle of the lane and it means I only have to worry about traffic coming at me from the left, not both sides.
3. I always have a quick check over my shoulder before changing lanes, not just relying on the mirrors.
If riding hard, stop before you start getting too tired.
