1 of my gal pals won tickets to the premiere at The Embassy last night and we were even treated with a short speech for Peter Jackson!

I only had a small idea of what the movie was about so was a bit unsure about what to expect. PJ described some of the unusual filming style, doco like on hand held cameras. There were no "famous" actors that I could see and the main role was performed by a man who has apparently never acted before. It was filmed in Johannesberg, South Africa and Weta studios in Miramar.

I would describe District 9 as an original, refreshing and gritty movie with a cleverly layered plot and interesting characters. Oooo and there were lots of kick-arse shoot 'em up scenes too! It was such a difference to all the slick, clean, air-brushed movies of late being churned out from America.

Previews can be decieving. For example the trailers for Terminator 4, Transformers 2, and Public Enemies were actually better than the movie itself.

Think I'll watch District 9 later this afternoon (One screening at 4:10pm). I'd rather see the movie than judging by it's trailer (Still the trailer was interesting)

Please don't say it's another arse type Cloverfield/Quarantine shaky handicam movie. Maybe just a few clips but not the entire movie please god noooo!

If you didn't already know this full length feature film came from the short film "Alive in Joburg" which you can watch here http://www.spyfilms.com/#neill_blomkamp/alive_in_joburg

I can't wait to see this movie. I really loved the trailers and Alive in Joburg.

Indeed it is gruesome. Definitely not for children.

There are many movies which their trailers are better than the movie itself. However this movie, District 9, the trailer is just a business card compared to the actual movie.

What's the acting like?? The trailer didn't actually grab me that much. I can't stand crap acting. You can have the best filmed and edited movie in the world but if the acting is second rate, it irritates the crap out of me. On the other hand, great acting can pull crappy film work through.

I seem to have become more of a critic since using Fatso for movies.

What's a good comparison with it?

Acting is fine. I can't stand half the hollywood actors anyway. Only about 10% of the film is shot in handycam style so there is no need to worry about getting motion sickness (if your one of those poofs :bleh:)

Easily the best film i have seen in a long time. It is long. Longer than transformers but transformers felt a lot longer. I couldn't wait for that pile of shit to finish.

When it finished some kids behind us said it was the worst movie they had ever seen. That annoys me because they are the mindless idiots that Transformers is marketed at. Did i mention Transformers is a shit film? :shifty:

The film reminded me of this music video (this will spoil the film a bit!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsLYMIsXg8c

Can only hope they make a sequel!

Personally I can't judge his (The main character) acting however it wasn't HORRIBLE like the actress in the movie Quarantine (ARGH! The nightmare!!!)
Also how can you judge acting from a computer generated/ alien voiced character? :msn-wink:

That's all I can say.

I read something like District 10 on today's paper but that's just a rumor... But I won't be suprised if they made another, but hope it won't be like some sequels where a second one just kills the whole story.

Oh ok got ya. There's one actor. Might be interesting to see.

I heard Transformers Part Deux is a bit rubbish. All action, no substance.

There's way to much market driven movies coming out at the mo'.Way too few are taking a punt and making their own types of movie. Too much in it for the money which is crap. Kids don't seem to have brains anymore so no one makes movies with in depth plots. I don't mind the no brainers now and then but, shit, 90% of what comes out? Maybe one day...

It's a damn good movie - there are a few things wrong with it, but when you consider it's his first real effort at a large movie, and that it only had a budget of 30mil with which it has pulled off this level of success, as opposed to say Transformers 2, which was 200mil of pure trash.

True. Creativity rules, Just like Borat. With budget of $18 Million to create gross revenue of $261 Million is truely amazing.

I wonder how much revenue District 9 would make...

sil3nt

Already at 37 million according to wikipedia.

I can't wait for the dvd release. There seems to be quite a bit missing from the final cut.

And if your a games nerd you'll love and recognise the weapons and vehicles! The MNU security firms Up Armoured Utilities are very Halo Warthog-like, the weapon with the field effect that can grab, contain and hurl objects is just plan FUN! and the microwave/beam gun (think Half life) is... appropriately messy.

Madness

I really enjoyed it. Gruesome is probably the last adjective to come to my mind for describing it though. There was some Jackson-esque splatter from his early days though.

The Nigerians were dodgy as!.

You do realise that Neill Blomkamp, the director, was going to be directing the Halo movie before the Microsoft/Fox disagreements cancelled it? :niceone:

Paulo
17th August 2009, 19:56
yeah I think it's great Neil has been vindicated, all the big studios were saying "who is this unknown kid director" when they were looking for backing for Halo. Now he's proven that he's got more fresh talent in his little finger than Michael Bay has in total. (mind you I'm a bit biased)

Actually at the premiere PJ said that they felt really bad that Halo had fallen through and that's part of why they backed him with District 9.

Yes.

You can also see a lot of influence from Jackson's own early movie history. He was a far better splatter director than he ever was a blockbuster director.
