WOW $1000 fine and automatic 28days loss of lisence!
Is this common place for this type of speed? I wouldnt know because i dont go that quick LOL
Creeping Death
20th August 2009, 20:04
Scuse my ignorance, but isn't 100kmh the speed limit on the motorway?
If bikers speed was 160 (as said at the end of the program) then wouldn't his fine be $600?
Thought it was $10 per k over the limit was the rule yet he got a grand?
I'm prolly wrong but that was my understanding.
Gremlin
20th August 2009, 20:08
There's no set 10k per limit or something...
Anything over 50kph over the limit, and you will probably be charged with dangerous driving, and you get to have a nice chat to people in a courtroom. Then its an attitude test.
Some people fail those tests alarmingly well.
WarlockNZ
20th August 2009, 20:09
Speeding fines increase progressively from $30 for speeds less than 10 km/h over the limit, to a maximum fine of $630 for speeds up to 50 km/h over the limit.
If your speed is more than 50 km/h over the limit you could be charged with careless, dangerous or reckless driving, and at more than 40 km/h above the speed limit you could also get a 28-day licence suspension.

40k over speed limit is around $600 fine from memory (havent had it). And then chuck in a $400 fine for dangerous driving (riding in the this situation) and that makes your $1k pretty simple.
Also he was disqualified for 6 months total. They said loss of licence for 28 days was on the spot (because he did over 40kms over speed limit, cops are allowed to take licence right there and then).
Gremlin
20th August 2009, 20:11

Not could... you do.

I'm also a bit shocked that someone who chooses to dress like Liam Gallagher circa "wonderwall" was riding a 748. Clearly the man's taste only extends as far as his transport...

I've never heard of traffic offenses affecting a travel visa .. but that's not my area i would imagine it might meet emigration policy.
"If it meets the definition of a "crime" as it is punishable by imprisonment. You definitely need to declare it."

One for riding a bike over 250cc while on restricted the other for riding a 250 with no bike license. I guess we only care about the speeders around here :shifty:

So no then:blink:
LOL .. it may depend, take the US for example, they don't consider traffic violations and felony (jail time) only as a misdemeanor (fine) .. so no a speeding fine in NZ shouldn't effect a US visa ...
but it may depend on the country ..
A drug charge in NZ ... then yes, you can pretty much kiss a visa for the USA goodbye.
i'd love to be corrected tho :)

The cop told him he could apply to get the fine withdrawn if he gets his license (as he was eligible to get it he was just lazy) but he got the cop to write down on the ticket that he had 28 days to get his full license and get off the ticket. AFAIK 140 kmh is the magic number (+40 over). Below that you get to keep your licence.
A 28 day walk plus a traffic offence notice follows but here's the kicker. There is a small degree of latitude with what you are charged. 2 guys I know have had quite a difference in thier tickets. One was 145 ish and charged with dangerous driving 'cos he was weaving in and out of rush hour traffic. Another was 165 in an 80 but stopped safely when ordered to at a checkpoint. His was exceeding 80 kmh (speeding).
The penalties in addition to the 28 day walk: DD denied charge, found guilty, 6 month walk $650 fine plus costs. Speeder pleaded gulity got 50 points, no walk and $1230 fine plus costs.
Jeez some places have a higher speed limit than our 'your a bad person for speeding' offence limits.

About to upset the hierachy. What the fark $1000 and 6 months disq for speeding on top of mandatory 28 day license lost.
Then the idiot still pissed blowing 728mcg or so on restricted? car license without full holder in car,he gets $450 and 6 months disq.
Am I only one confused,i.e road safe message being spouted by police boss',no quotas etc. What a load of bollocks. When DIC accused is in court nearly twice adult limit and gets $550 less fine than a speeding guy.In my mind yes they're both farkin menaces on road, but why the crap about don't drink and drive if they're getting piss arse penalties.
Wish the judges would get real.

I was surprised they did not have another bit after it saying they caught the other biker, they did have a heli on him. maybe because it wasn't the same bike as you suggest.
To me it did look like a different bike. or he was just sitting on his tank with his legs out.

I know that the bridge is an 80 zone, I just choose to treat it as a 100 zone. That reminds me of the time I got pulled over and the cop said I was going over 80 - I said "gee I thought the whole motorway system was 100k" he said he was fairly sure I was going over 100 too and told me to take it easy in future, which of course I did :innocent:

Having watched the show on tvnz.co.nz I can't help wondering a few things:
Two bikes riding along, passing a few cars & exceeding the speed limit - how does that indicate they were racing? It really isn't that unusual for a couple of guys to ride along the motorway going a bit quicker than they should.
The cop suggests 180kph and says the rider will go to court for exceeding 160kph - I got the impression that they didn't have an exact reading on the speed and the 160+ was just a guesstimate. It seems a little harsh to be charged in court on a guess of your speed rather than actual evidence IMO.
Some chain oil had flicked onto the sidewall of the tyre - I personally doubt that this leads to a high risk of an accident. I don't think the cop was a biker.

He should get off the speeding accusation, chances of getting a radar reading bobbing in and out of cars is very low, however dangerous riding depends if he geta a good lawyer.

Last year sounds about right. At the end of the episode they mention that the rider was fined $1000 & lost his license for 6 months, obviously the episode screened after his court case. Usually the court case is a few months after the offence.
