Interesting. There's some speculation that this is in response to the hammering they took over "Palm-Oil-Gate"
My thoughts are that this would have to have been in the works far longer than that.
So, anybody who defected to Whittakers when palm oil happened going to go back to Cadbury because of this?

No because I realized in that time Whittakers peanut block is just a really large peanut slab. I love it we went from no chocolate to getting one every week at the supermarket. Marketing got to love it.

So this fairtrade Cadbury - will it still be made in Australia?
Because palm-oil-gate was only part of the problem in some peoples books.

Fuck em.
I don't give a shit where the ingredient come from, Its the fact they moved production overseas, shrunk the block of chocolate, changed to inferior ingredients and then claimed it was due to customer demand.
What......we demanded a shit product for the same price and more work for the Aussies? Bullshit talking fucking bastards.
Fuck em, fuck em up their fucking arses, HARD.

Apparently. Tasmania IIRC.
And no word on making the blocks the previous size, or doing away with the cardboard packaging.
Miss Mully had two Aunts staying the last few weeks - we got them hooked on Whittakers... So much so, that they bought a whole lot to take home to England.

We must be doing something very wrong if it is cheaper to manufacture in Australia.

I agree.
I've only bought Whittakers since then, apart from one time when I bought some Cadbury white chocolate; it tasted so crappy compared to the original that I won't buy it again.
As for the size change - they also (apparently) dropped the price as well, to keep it under $5. It's always cheap at the supermarket anyway, so it didn't affect me.
And the cardboard packaging? Actually, I prefer it. It's easier to open and to reseal (if you're not stuffing the whole block in your mouth at once). But I don't prefer it enough to make me go back to Cadbury.

Cadbury in the UK has already gone fair trade so they already would have all their supply lines, certification, etc sorted. So changing the Aussie factory over wouldn't have been too hard.
I still think it's a cynical marketing ploy though. They obviously didn't think their NZ customers were responsive enough to change brands over the palm oil issue, and when people did change Cadbury suddenly started caring about us! They have never cared before!
As for Whittakers, there are lots of reasons why we should keep buying their stuff. I have been in correspondence with them, encouraging them to go Fair Trade.
Just yesterday I received the following email (obviously a form letter)...
Whittaker’s source all of the cocoa beans that we use from Ghana and not from the Ivory Coast. We purchase the beans through the Ghanaian Cocoa Board which is the government marketing organization that sells the Ghanaian cocoa crop.
In a Labour study conducted into the Ghana Cocoa Industry in 2007, no evidence was found of child trafficking or children being bound on cocoa farms to the detriment of their education.
We do not believe, therefore, that the cocoa beans that we purchase from Ghana involve child slave labour.
The whole Ghanaian Cocoa Industry is currently going through a certification process which has its focus on four key areas:
- Ensuring that cocoa is grown responsibly and that children are neither harmed nor denied schooling
- Improving the long term sustainability of cocoa farming
- Strengthening farming communities through access to education and training
- Supporting effort to protect and enhance the environment
We do not condone any abusive child labour or forced labour activities in the production of cocoa beans. We are members of the Confectionery Manufacturers of Australasia and the World Cocoa Foundation. We fully support the programmes that these organizations, in partnership with other international agencies, are conduction in West Africa to end any abusive labour practices.
The websites www.candy.net.au , www.worldcocoafoundation.org , www.worldcocoainitiative.org and www.cocobod.gh/ will give you more detailed information about the positive work that is being carried out in West Africa and what has be achieved to date particularly in terms of the Ghana Certification process.

Cadburys sucks and Whittakkers rocks, pity that Whitakkers has such shit adverts. In a country where wooden houses are the norm, they show a group of youngsters burning down a bach to make chocolate? Friggin dumb. But they make great chocolate and they are local, so they deserve our support!!! :headbang:

Totally agree. They would rather put spin on it and treat everyone like fools rather then front up and gain some respect.

And best of all it's a Kiwi in-joke. Foreigners won't get it. Good move for a company using their local identity as a selling point.

Cadburys are in serious damage control mode, and they still haven't got their heads round the fact that the more BS they peddle the deeper the hole that they're digging for themselves becomes  :buggerd:

As long as it goes abck to how it tasted before they changed the recpie I will go back to buying it.

It won't go back to how it tasted, because they are still using vegetable oil. It will still be soft and slimey.
All Cadbury's are trying to do is prompt Whitakers to prove that their cocoa beans are free trade compliant.
Or at least insinuate that their only credible competitor (no one buys Nestle chocolate do they? World's second most evil corporation after Shell) in NZ is using cocoa beans picked and packed by mutilated Sth American orphans.
