Hey all. I have just ridden over from Rapa. Not a cloud in the sky there, very hot and sunny. a bit blustery on the hill but nothing major.

Hey one and all, Hope the Kapiti ride was "cruisy" as befitting a Wednesday night. A couple of pix of the beginning. I headed back over the Hill to the Rapa, so nothing of the middle or the end

So I just got back... great ride! Shame the only other 250s there were ridden by experienced riders who left me well behind, but a big thanks to Buckbuck on the Honda 900 who hung back to make sure I didn't get left too far behind, and the rider (sorry, forgot your name!) on the sexy Ducati 999 and fluro vest who showed me some lines and the way to the pub.
Hopefully see you guys next week, was good fun... and better luck finding it next week magicmonkey!

Hey guys (and gals if there are any reading...)
I wouldn't mind joining in on the fun sometime if you are able to put up with another complete greenie?
I have had very little open road exp mind you. Have actually only been out on the open road once as wanted to "test her out" to which I ended in Palmy... Family are up there so was a nice little trip.
Last Sunday it was such a nice day that I wanted to go for a ride before it dawned on me that I didn't really know where to go :sweatdrop

I'm sure the others will say that another newbie is fine, and they were fine with me lagging behind last week so you should be more than welcome.
Bit of advice from another newbie: put in a bit of time on the open road if you can, riding over the haywards and then around to Whitby or the other way around the inlet towards Comborne is a beautiful ride and it's an 80k zone, so not quite as fast as the motorway. If you want a few more twisties you could head up Paekakariki Hill Road. Check out this link for the area I'm talking about:
http://maps.google.co.nz/maps/mpl?ie=UTF8&moduleurl=http:%2F%2Fmaps.google.co.nz%2Fintl%2Fen _nz%2Fhelp%2Fmaps%2Fholidays%2Fmapplet.html&mapclient=google&ll=-41.11027,174.923286&spn=0.093252,0.222988&z=13
Even just spending a few hours on the motorway going from Wellington City to the Hutt or Porirua and back, or over from Petone to Wainuiomata will give you some important confidence which would be good for the group ride.

Some good advice there, cheers =)
I'm already pretty confident with the straight road/motorway riding seeing as the Wellington to Palmy road is pretty much a straight line. If I recall I sat around the 100-110 mark most of the way with the occasional car pass thrown in. No dramas there.
Haven't done any twisties yet tho so the Paekakariki Hill Road could be a plan for this weekend weather permitting :woohoo:

Not that good of an idea for a newbie rider. The hill is narrow and boy racers regularly use that as a race track. Also mothers doing school runs in their off roaders (that don't go off road). If your going to do that run then make sure you have an experienced rider with you until you get to know the place.

Hey Marine, If you want an experienced rider to go for a ride with, just PM me. I am always up for a ride and quite happy to show newbies some pointers. We have a group of us who do the Wellington Tag game regularly that get together for a tootle over the Takas for coffee on Sunday's. Again, you quite welcome to join us. Just keep an eye on the threads.

Im in Wellington City (not sure if people who live in the Hutt or whatever can choose different on these forums?) in Newtown. I work in Thorndon so get a total of 30minutes riding a day to work and back (and its all inner city riding :crybaby:). Not nearly enough for my liking.
Getting to meeting spots in the Hutt or where ever isn't a problem tho.

Nothing wrong with getting lots of inner city K's under your belt. Probably better that way than the other. Inner city riding teaches you to keep your wits about you. Folks that don't do inner city very much sometimes can't handle close traffic very well.

Just turn up at the meeting spot which is the carpark at Avalon Park of Fairway Drive, just over Kennedy Good Bridge. People start to arrive there from 6pm onwards. Ride usually leaves around 6.30-6.40pm.

Heya Bren
Lately its been 20-30 but depends on the weather. If its crap its only a few hardy ones...
Kapiti riders meet at Mobil Prm (by the lights) around 5ish for a 5:15 departure...normally a fairly loose arrangement but if you let us know you're coming we'll wait for ya.
Weathers not looking too flash for tomorrow tho

Depends on the weather. If it is sunny, anywhere between 30 - 50. If it's drizzling, 25ish. If It's raining, blowing a gale and snowing, the die-hard 10-15 will still turn out.

Bend ya elbows, stop gripping the bars like your life depends on it...you will only lean a littel if you get that sorted as opossed to the force of your stiff arms causing the bike to steer (learned that here in the Survival Skills topics)
Loose arms in the wind and no pushy pushy (or less I should say)

just a note for anyone like me that was planning on doing the ride and then heading to the bears meet
Cheers everyone for your support with these meetings. The great news is that it seems the BEARs name is currently being revived allover the North Islands race scene. I hope our meetings were of some contribution:woohoo:
Big ups to all the race clubs who are offering, or considering offering the BEARs class for up and coming rounds.
With summer on the way, other commitments and daylight saving meaning most would rather have bums on bikes rather than bar stools, I will discontinue running these meetings for now. If anyone wishes to continue running them, do please feel free.
One again.
HUGE thanks everyone.
Safe and happy riding :scooter:

Good point. The wind is a great teacher.
http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=108605&highlight=wind+telling
"Here is a tip for all you folks who hate riding in the wind because it feels like you are getting pushed around. Well, the wind IS pushing you around and it is telling you something. It is saying: Yo! what are you doing? Why are you hanging on to the handlebars with a death grip? Why is your body so stiff? learn to ride properly or I will huff and puff and push you off the road!
If you have problems with riding in wind you can easily solve them. Just use your thighs and knees to keep yourself stable on the bike and use your hands to steer, brake and accelerate, NOT support your body while you are riding. Imagine you are holding valuable and fragile teacups in your hands. Do this and you won't even notice the wind anymore... "
The wind I can deal with. The rain I just don't like.

Used to ride a little single pot CBX250rs into Welly everyday. About $150 kg wet. That thing used to move in the wind until I released the death grip.

The wind in itself is something we all need to learn to deal with. What I dont like is when you get shunted uncontrollably into the other side of the road by an extraordinarily large gust coming from an unexpected direction. The one where you have absolutely no control over the direction your bike is about to take. Thats the wind i hate. But what you have said above is spot on. Wind and corners, - its all about relaxed body especially arms.

Yep the unexpected direction is nasty but the bit I really hate is in the wind funnels in the CBD, stop at the lights take off and as you clear the building line its sideways time, and you haven't got much pace on for control. yuk

well take note of those spots and use your eyes when you are in the country. You can use the topography and the effect of the wind on the vegetation to judge the effect of the wind in the few hundred metres ahead. You will learn where in welly the wind funnels through. If you do get pushed countteer immediately to correct but be aware you may have to correct again...bewate of oncoming trucks etc esp when there is a strong side wind. You will suddenly be sheltered from the wind, and then exposed to its full force PLUS buffeting as the truck passes.

Depends on the weather. If it is sunny, anywhere between 30 - 50. If it's drizzling, 25ish. If It's raining, blowing a gale and snowing, the die-hard 10-15 will still turn out.
Correction - If it is blowing a gale and misty, only ONE person turns up. Namely Hawkeye.
Turned up tonight to find the car park empty :weep:
Ok my clock said 6:31pm . Never passed them over Haywards or on SH2 going to the duck pond. Head to the Parrot. No sign of any bikes. Back over Haywards, round Greys Rd. Out to Mana. No sign of bikes at either of the bars there.
So here I am, at home, bar open .

About 53km in 53 minutes with a bit of everything, the initial Blue Mountains Road is a good 1km climb with decreasing radius corners, the road out to Whitemans Valley opening up then narrowing down to hedge rows. The climbs over Mangaroa and Wallaceville Hills are good, as are the downhill runs.
I spent a lot of time on this circuit on my first 250cc (a GN250) and now tonight was the thrid time since Sunday I did the circuit on the 250R Ninja.
Speaking of which the new Ninja is running in very well indeed, and I can see I am going to enjoy this summer and next winter on this bike.
Glad you enjoyed the ride.
Sent a text to Sels1 when I got home, 'too windy' for me on the new bike up over the Takas this evening.
I think we made a wise decision to bale and head home from Te Marua.

Yep, i doubt the hill wouldve been much fun for a newbie on a light bike like myself lol. Forgot to mention, found out first hand what a hare going "pop" sounds like too on one of those back roads, but doesnt seem to be any mess on the bike :D

Yea I was behind you and saw first hand the rabbit do some pretty good avoidance moves at least for the first 2 bikes, that was until you nailed it. Thanks BuckBuck#1 :niceone: also for the ride out there. I had heard of this trail (Blue Mountains Road through Whitemans Valley, Mangaroa, Maymorn, and Te Marua) but never ridden it. Ha, I remember that little fella.
I only had a couple of seconds to avoid it once it survived bucks mighty green machine. Luckily for me I veered left while it darted right.
Did wonder if it made the gauntlet but forgot to ask when we parked up. Guess not...

The dvd is currently with Gordie, I lent it to him last ride to Paekakariki. I will hand it on to anyone that may want to have a look at it. It is from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau and presented by Wayne Gardener.

It is ridiculously easy, theres some piss easy to follow satellite view and street view maps i posted just a couple of pages back. Basically just the Avalon exit off SH2 (northernmost lights before Haywards) brings you onto the correct street, and the parks on the left... should spot a decent few bikes there :D

Yeah the wind doesn't bother me too much (maybe i'm just not going fast enough..). I can handle the occasional push from the wind but can't say i'm such a fan of the slippery-when-wet roads.

Is still very dry here in Wellington City. Although a bit windy, it's a warm wind so the temp is up.
The wind is also dropping a tad according the metservice (dropped from strong to moderate) which is a good sign. Another is that the wind is a NW and seeing as north is fine we shouldn't really get any rain.

Every panel is marked. main panels cracked. mudguard cracked. Exhaust has dents and scratches. Forks totally buggered. Tank has dent in top. Pack rack munted. All switches on bars buggered. foot brake bent and twisted. I expect that the wheel will be buckled or at least have a flat spot. Be interested to know if the frame is ok.

Going round a right hand sweeper on the Akas. Hit some gravel, lost the front and went down into a concrete drain. Unfortunately it was at the end of the drain at the time so the bike slammed into a pipe going under a driveway. I flew like a bird and the bike followed. The bike finished standing upside down on the bars and the pack rack. Thankfully, I travelled further than the bike did.
