Arrive with a full tank of gas.

Assemble from 6:00pm

Depart at 6:30pm

These are informal easy-paced rides, ideal for learners and people new to Wellington to meet up and go riding.

The default ride is often over the Rimutakas to either the Tin Hut at Tauherenikau or the Red Pub in Featherston. But a final decision about destination is generally left to a group consensus prior to departure. Weather and road conditions on the Hill, combined with a Group Vibe, mean other destinations and routes are sometimes chosen.

There may be a couple of "practice" rides required prior to 27 September...

There is a better chance than there has been for the last 3 years or so.

I am looking for a chance to weave through debris and downed riders. It's been a while.

If the numbers of people participating in these events gets too large, then it warrants splitting into two and taking different routes. There's no point in scaring the shit out of country publicans when a gazzillion bikers turn up at once demanding beverages and food.

I'm serious. Most Wairarapa country pubs gear up to handle about 15-20 locals for a beer of a Wednesday evening and probably less than a dozen meals. Thirty bikers rolling in and demanding wedges and ales is a little unfair.

Chapelli's in Featherston is really nice and I think they do their $10 menu on Wednesdays.

I did 6-7 rides last summer and I never came across any resentment from publicans, nor any demanding from the riders. If anything the publicans were more than accommodating as such numbers are good money and they want the group to come back. i think the worst thing they had to cope with was 30-45 helmets and a couple of full ashtrays.

gordy's seemed more than happy, and the pub in featherston wasn't bad cause the group tends to split in two anyway

The Featherston pub had no food the last two rides, and the Tin Hut has asked us to leave before. Just because it didn't happen to you, doesn't mean it won't happen.

Perhaps someone could call ahead to let them know that they could be invaded by 20 or so bikes if......

1. someone decides on the exact destination before we leave.
2. We have the phone numbers.

Otherwise we just wing it and hope for the best.

Yes I experienced this a few times in the Waiararapa. West coast pubs like the Sandbar and the Monteiths in Mana and Gordy's in Paraparaumu can cope with the sudden influx better. Its not normally an issue in the earlier part of the season due to the smaller numbers.

It might be a good idea to call the place 2 or 3 days beforehand and warn them to expect 30 or so bikers on Wednesday night...
Good idea but in the past the destination is usually decided on the night due to weather and road conditions, and the mood of the folk who actually turn up.

The thing is, sometimes its best to call ahead, but don't mention bikes, otherwise you get a reception like what James Deuce has said.

The Royal in Featherston has always been good to us, and there is the option of ordering, then going for a blat round the lake, giving plenty of time for everything to be prepped.

Yeah there was some bins on the Thursday ride. There were 2 on the Wed ride very early in the season, causing much hooha and angst on the thread - mostly by people who never attended the rides but felt they should poke their oar in anyway. Ignore them - the folk that actually turn up to the rides generally enjoy themselves.

I definitely enjoyed myself. There seemed to be just the right level of organisation, without it being too rigid. looking forward to getting along to a few rides this year (if I ever get my friggin bike back!). Everyone seems to ride sensibly and at a good pace. Bring on daylight savings ;-)

I attended the Wednesday night rides for the first time last year. Didn't see any bins or carnage. Instead, I found helpful and friendly people making constructive comments on my riding, telling me how and where I could improve it so I wouldn't bin or become a statistic. That's gotta be good.
I would encourage anyone new to motorcycling to join in on these rides.
I am looking forward to the rides kicking off again very shortly.

Been looking forward to these starting again for awhile. Will probably miss the first one but should be around after that.

I hope this thread stays cleaner than it did last year. The ride has always been alot of fun.

After attending most of the rides for the past two years I dont recall seeing much/any problems regarding pub owners being offended, how it operated last year was good for me.

Interesting. Food is a condition of all liquor licences. Typical small town malaise.

Nonsense. Your typical local country publican probably plans a typical evening around a handful of cockies wandering in for a pint and some fries after milking. 30-plus bikers arriving out of the blue is not what they would have been expecting and on that basis I think it's fair and reasonable for them not to offer these interlopers anything more than bags of nuts or chippies.

We've rung ahead and been told, "No Problem" by the Tin Hut and had a somewhat less than ideal reception when we've turned up.

If you ring ahead then you shouldn't be sent packing when you arrive.

It's not hard for all pubs to have a freezer with some pies, pizza, savouries and a microwave as is required by their licence. But it's an easy option to not sell alcohol if you have no food.....yeah right.

I doubt a bag of nuts or chippies wouldn't cut it with the LLA.

True. But some food should be available, even the minimum unless a reasonable reason for running out, then stop serving alcohol as well.

Destinationation: Paekakariki Hill

Riders: Five

Was interesting to hear the comments expressed at the Duckpond carpark about the Group Riding Guidelines.

In brief as there were only five riders, I spoke up and said 'Well I am going to ride to the top of the Paekakariki Hill, ride your own ride.'

I arrived at the top of the Paekakariki Hill to be greeted by the other four riders ahead of me in what were very blustery conditions, no rain though - and the ride up was very pleasant. Coming down however with an uncharactersitic slip into Neutral, had my reaction kicking in quite effectively as the right hand sweep approached: front setup easy on, clutch then into gear, rear easy on then off, out clutch, gradual acceleration, look through the corner and counter steer.

The Group Riding Guideline
In my opinion the guideline is quite reasonable and one observation comment: if there is any rider with recent first aid training perhaps it could be useful if that rider rode to the rear with Tail End Charlie. [and....if that is you who is recently trained, then when next going on a group ride - bite the bullet and do it.]

The case tonight there were only five riders, an optimum size really for a small group ride, and the bottom line be responsible and ride your own ride.

koba

For What It Is Worth
The guideline is not a waste of cyber ink, but a waste of space in the minds of those who cannot see reason. May the TCWNR's be reported in a positive light and those that intend to ride on Wednesday have some respect for those riding in front and behind because sooner or later they may/will need YOUR help when shit happens or you may need THEIR help.

Destinationation: Paekakariki Hill

Riders: FiveWas interesting to hear the comments expressed at the Duckpond carpark about the Group Riding Guidelines.

Before someone else says it. FFS.

With the weather being the way it is, it would be good to have some flexibility about which night we ride.

Has thought been given to doing Tuesday or Thursday if it looks like crap? Before you say there is already a Thursday night ride, we could leave at a different time to avoid congestion (and scaring the newbies on the usual Thursday night ride  )

Sorry mate, Wednesday Night Ride will always be Wednesday Night Ride. If you want to do one on a different day, post up a new thread or PM some people to come along.

Theres nothing wrong with joining in with the Thursday crowd they don't bite and the destination is pretty simple, just find some others that are wanting to go along at a reduced pace and set an example to others. As well as this, advice and tips can be given from Deano (being wellingtons mentor and all) if you want any. Just remember, most people who go along on the Thursday are rather well seasoned in their riding, and many race aswell. Doesn't mean that you have to compete with them tho.

I concur. Feel free to post up whatever rides you like, but TCWNR will continue for as long as people keep turning up to it.

On another subject, I note the monthly BEARs meet is this Wed. Dare I suggest that (just thinking out loud here...not organising anything that needs guides:whistle:) that a ride that ended up at the Parrot and Jigger would be an idea??

Hey - I do think BMWSTA has a valid point, no need to jump on him for his comment - as he said - it was his opinion. It is supposed to be the Wednesday cruisy ride, not the Thursday Thrash ride. I know you guys are all keen as to get on you bikes and have some fun, and that was expressed in typical biker way - pop a wheelie or two. And I see that 325rocket is happy to be TEC and keep an eye on the newbie riders so I am sure all will be ok. So ive been over the Rimutakas and back twice tonight.

I managed to get away from work a bit earlier last night than I had wished but still too late to catch up with you guys!! So, I took a punt on which way you would head - - and you didnt head over the hill to Gordie's. Brilliant view from the top of the Paekak Hill - and another few km's under my belt on the new bike. How many went over the other hill last night? DJ

I guess about 30 odd bikes.
One thing which stood out for me last night is how well behaved everyone seemed to be, myself included. There didn't seem to be any "racing" over the hill (well not in the bunch I could see in front or behind), just a bunch of bikers quite happy to follow each other in a courteous well behaved manner.

Guess that wind made everyone adjust their pace accordingly. Clearly very dangerous behaviour, better slap another ACC levy on us:buggerd:

nice choice of bike;) the ride out is a group thig, the ride back is more casual, people trickle of at their own pace, went on my 1st wncr a week after getting my learners, it's up to you how confident you feel, but not a fast pace, make yourself known and no doubt someone will ride with you if you want
