View Full Version : 990 Adventure for sale.

Crisis management

Seeing as every other bugger is getting back into mid sized bikes I've decided to join them so I can try and keep up with them...... :Oi:

This is just a heads up that the big KTM will be for sale in the near future, so if anyone knows anyone that might want one, keep me in mind!

06, 990 Adventure in anthracite with Akrapovics, Givi luggage and an attitude.

Now I've just got to decide what colour to buy next....orange? red? yellow? blue? green...no, not green. Decisions, decisions, who's going to let me try out their bikes to assist in the decision making process?

Cheers

Come and have a fang on it.
I had a 640E previously and it's similar to that, but I'd be interested in riding it back to back with a 640a.

Thanks, it would eat the adventure, as I have the weight but what do you get for range on that tank then? I see you can get bigger tanks too....
We will meet in time I am sure at some ride, so yes, would be interested to see how it goes?
Kick it easy? Do you practise? The adventure is really easy, I had to up North when the bike took a liking to the rock pools at Poutu Point....hehe
My starter had to be disconnected as it wanted to go by itself when I turned the key....Like a battery, kept going and going....;)
Now, I kick it a couple of times for fun....(and kick start it too) ;)

Kick starting?
Easy. I think you have to regard the starter on the SXC and E models as more of an electric assist as frequent use (on snotty trail rides) does drain the battery quickly.

Yes.....those BMW riders must be a weird shape tho, it fits nicely all round except the waist, I could carry my sleeping bag in there as well, must drink more beer to conform to that shape!

So, before the high commander notices 3 bikes loitering around the property, I have to shift the 990, looks like Tardme is looming...last week of special price for KBers.

I went to the 525 because I wanted a bike that I could ride along the road and if I saw a track or trail disappearing into the wild I'd have the ability to go and explore it even if on my own. With the XT600 and the BMW 1100 I didn't really have that option as the XT was a little heavy and lacking in suspension for rough going and the BMW was way too heavy to have fun in that enviroment. I can also trail ride or race it:). Oh and have I mentioned wheelies?

Crisis management
9th September 2009, 21:16
Similar reasons to Andy, I can only keep one adventure bike so it has to do all things for me (compromise, compromise) and, while the 990 is a great bike, I want to be able to go anywhere by myself and the 990 is too large to safely take up tracks solo.

Middle size does it for me, with the 640 I can ride anywhere (hopefully).....

9th September 2009, 21:34
I'll bite on the big bike/mid bike question. I've no doubt I could punt a DR650 or KTM640 faster along a gravel or dirt track than the 950. The mid sized bikes are easier to ride - braking coming into a corner is easier, powering out without stepping the back out in a massive way is easier (don't get me wrong controlled slides are good), picking it up is easier etc etc.

I think you need to look at the intended purpose of the bike. I brought the XTZ and then the 950 AdvS so I could carry my wife around the country side. Having played with mid sized bikes and bigger twins I'd definitely have a mid sized for solo riding around NZ. I'm just lucky enough that I'm big enough to pick up the 950 reasonably easily and I'm pretty happy to ride it on some reasonably challenging stuff - even if I'm not that fast. If nothing else the suspension is pure bliss compared to anything I've had prior.

Cheers R

Well I should a bought the 950 to start with and may not have moved. I was having to push the Tiger in a vain effort to keep up(just my nature) with the fun at the front & the suspension was taking a hammering so.......

Hey Iain, any descent bites on the Katoooom yet mate?

There has been a bit of interest with a couple of people sounding serious but with all things for sale, nothings happened until someone fronts with an offer. I'm not expecting to sell the bike in a week, it's a serious amount of cash and people need to take there time to be sure they want to spend that much.

Surprisingly, I've had more offers for bits of it so far, there's a queue of people after the Akras and I've been surprised how many other bits I've had enquiries for....I want to sell it in one lump!

I shall continue waiting patiently and answering questions.....

Just back from a 1500km weekend with lots of seal, gravel, dirt, mud, river crossings, steep hills, riding in the dark over a track that was rutted, bog holes, steep gravel climbs and decents, wash outs, drop offs over bed rock steps yadda yadda yadda. All this will carrying full panniers and a tent and bed roll straped on the tail rack. For me (I'm 6'2" and 110kg) the 950 is THE bike to have. It went like a dream and took it all in its stride. Yes I would have been easier/faster on a road bike on the road, an enduro bike on the tracks and a 650ish on the gravel but for a do it all bike it's awesome.

Sorry off topic but this was just too good of an opportunity to rave! I had a great weekend despite the 380kms of riding up the seal in the pissing rain yesterday afternoon.

Cheers R

a synopsis please of why the 'holy grail of adventure bikes' was not for you?

and how do you compare your 640 to your old dr650?

This won't get me into any trouble will it???

Ok, Holy Grailers to this side, defenders of the DR to that side…..

The first comment I have is more to do with the nature of Adventure riding, the huge amount of compromise that’s involved trying to find the perfect bike or least annoying compromised bit. For me (fairly obviously now) the ideal bike is around a 650 as I like to be able to take myself anywhere I want and to be able to extract myself afterwards so big, heavy bikes don’t work for me, I only weight 70 kgs and can’t pick the bastards up. The compromise really bits because of living in Auckland and the road distances that need to be covered to get anywhere interesting, that’s how I ended up with the 990.

Anywho to get onto some sort of topic, the DR650 was great for of road and reasonable for on road with limited suspension, seat and range but at a price that makes it a good basic bike, it coped averagely with the off road stuff but didn’t really set my heart singing due to the build quality and basic construction.

The 990, bought to cover road miles better but overpowered me in the off road stuff. It is a great road bike and long distance consumer, eats gravel with a howling exhaust and on open terrain is great off road. The limitations I encountered were in tight roads and tight off road conditions. The bike is capable of all this stuff but I found it hard work to change direction (lots of weight to move around) and limiting in the places I could go safely as I couldn’t pick it up. The big annoyances for me were the fuel range, the slightly twitchy fueling off idle and the wind buffeting, the last being areal pain in the arse. So, lots of fun on the road, on gravel and open fire roads stuff but not so fun in tight stuff.

I like doing the tight stuff…..this point is what got me back to the mid sized bikes.

The 640 covers most bases, it’s great off road and I can safely take it anywhere solo so I have my freedom back. The fuel range is good, the suspension wonderful and the power adequate, about the same as the DR bottom end with a bit more up top. Road miles still hurt a bit and I can see me choosing carefully which route I will take, having said that, the last 42 crossing event I left Auckland at 6, got to National Park at 10, did Fishers and the 42nd and was a bit tired but not sore that night.

As I said at the start, it’s about compromise and a couple of good examples are the following; I’m doing the Far North adventure ride in December and know I can have a decent go at the trail bike part of that ride on the 640, it’s the perfect bike for this.
Conversely, I was thinking of doing the Marlborough safari next year but would rather have the 990 for that due to the distance to cover to get there, the 640 needs more time to travel to make the trip enjoyable.

So, all good bikes in part, choose your poison.

Definitely NOT a case of the shortest most direct route.

Most of the reasons you list are exactly why I never went down the 950 route in the first place. Can't say I've regretted that decision. Would love to have one for everywhere I'd take a soft-roader, but I simply don't have the skillz or the brawn to take such a big beastie trail-riding.

Great synopsis Crisis. How about the vibes from the 640? Ridden a few & the owners don't notice them anymore? Is your experience the same?

I do love watching the WP suspenders go to work on ruff stuff. They look horn.

The 'vibes' from the 640A. The first time I rode one, I thought OMG, that is bad news, all the way down through my boots...The second time I rode one, it wasn't noticeable really, get it into top gear and she is smoothe.
Once my hands go to sleep, everything is fine after that...
These bikes certainly aren't as bad as the early ones as they have the counter thingy in them now...:)
The WP suspension is great, it has saved me a few times....

The 640A, im my mind is perfect for the longer trips and covering the distance. 1000Km days aren't an issue, metal roads and tar seal. I do take breaks and stand on the pegs, and as long as my Ipod still has the life in it, I keep going.
That is the thing with the fuel range, you tend to go further afield and stop less often, I think that is a bonus.
The 640 may take more time to get there, but not by much, and at the end of the day, you will still have gas in the tank and won't be walking with a can....
I have had both bikes and what was quoted before is right on the button, but having said that, I often think what would it be like on the 990 riding this track etc and am glad I have the smaller beastie.
I ride frequently with A 990A and have to hang back sometimes, not much fun getting peppered with chunks of mother Earth....

Not known as the paint shaker for nothing (Mark's a bastard)....yes they do vibrate but from my brief reading about them careful tuning, chain adjustment etc will get rid of a lot of them. Ask me again in 6 months.

The vibration however is simply a part of the bike rather than a problem, its the same as DRs blow 3rd gear....part of the experience.

Good thread the 640a looks a cool bike. And you guys are right the fuel range on the 990 is ummm....crap. I managed 200k's on a full tank before the warning light came on, the reserve will get me 40 to 50k,s more but its still bad. Then again it was good fun burning it. Could do with a 30l tank. Then it would be a bitch to pick up. Hou much does 30l of gas weigh?.

I think 1 litre of petrol is supposed to be something like .72kg so a bit less.

Still heavy though.

200Km's off the full 20-odd litres? I hope that was a lot of fun.

I know that, but I didnt think think the volume would equate to a lighter amount etc...
So, oil and deisel is the same...
Where are these boffins to give us some figures...?
i.e. 0.15% lighter or sommit....
I wonder how much lighter it all is?

Diesel is derived from petroleum like gasoline is. Its density is 850 gms/liter whilst the density of gasoline is about 720 gms/ liter.
Water of course is 1000 gm per liter

Google is your friend (http://www.google.co.nz/search?q=density+of+diesel). Also, a set of good kitchen scales. I measured 1L of 95RON = 736g. There's no fixed amount; different fuels have different densities... oils ain't oils.

Denser water sinks to the bottom of fuel & oil. So if you get water in your carb or sump, one trick to remove most of it is to crack open the drain plug - the water will be sitting at the plug, ie the lowest point in the system - and let the water seep out. When you get oil/fuel coming out, tighten it back up. This is a trail-side technique to de-water a bike after a dunking.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but one of my staff needs a new battery for his 950 supermoto. The yuasa number is ytz14s. ytz14 is common but the s stands for short as it is a bit shorter to fit the katooms.

Does any of you ktm guys know where to get em a bit cheaper than the dealer.

Thats it as you were.

Haven't used them myself but they've been commended to me. Haven't used them because the battery for the 640A is a YTZ10S... yep, the most expensive one listed at $367:gob:, another "S" variant that's shorter than all the others.

Comparing prices on a USA site, the 640A battery is US$225, the 950SM is US$265. That means the 950SM Yuasa battery is likely NZ$425-450 from batterydirect, if they can get it.

If no-one has a ready answer, try Orange Crush (http://www.advrider.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=34) to see if there is a known alternative. There are a couple of much cheaper batteries (like half price) of similar or better quality, that have dimensions that can be made to fit the 640A.

I may just lookk into it tomorrow for him.

BTW he is selling the sm if anyone is interested.

Heaps of stuff on the ADV orange crush thread about this assuming it is the same battery as in the ADV models - a specific thread about batteries even. Damn expensive battery but I think a honda goldwing battery will fit but I'd check that our first.
