And whats this XT Network they're talking about?
Their new network they're trying to switch all their customers to.
I am hearing its possible the new network has more call drops, less coverage, compared to the old network....

I'm on XT, and haven't had any issues with it.
Best thing is, you can buy any phone to use on Telecom now. Since they run sim cards.

My missus got given one of these phones by telecom, and switched to the XT network.
The network seems ok, although I am on the CDMA, and sending messages takes a while, and you cant pixt each other.
Also, the music shop dosent work.
However, she absolutely hates the R6 phone.
Small buttons make texting an issue, and the phone itself is tinny and plasticy.
She hates the ringtones, well, she hates the phone, and after were married at the end of the year, the next thing that we will be buying is a new phone.
Cheers,
Mike

Telcom built their own network years ago and it was difficult for a while to get phones with to take advantage of all the gizmo's
Since the competition BellSouth, Vodafone, 2go (and few others past and present) and they are all using networks that other countries use making there phones compatible over the world. Hence if you had a Telecom phone and were going over seas you had to go in to Telecom dealer and the would tweak your phone for the overseas network. (not so bad now)
The new XT Network is more compatible with the rest of the world. And the old Network will be switched off in 2011 (apparently)
Is it any better and have as much coverage as the old network... debatable, various things will be better in built up areas, faster, more reliable  and more services on the new network. But in some area as they slow replace parts and cables and dishes and upgrade exchanges here and there it won't be any better...
or something like that ;)

I only use a phone for texting and making calls, the one I have currently has internet and camera etc, but dont use either of those options at all.
I was sure they said the coverage was better, which was only reason I said ''yeah ok'', I have seven days to return it if I dont like it.

Its bloody great having a camera in your pocket all day. Next time you find yourself saying "haha, thats cool.." pull ur phone out and shoot a photo of it.
Best thing is, you can buy any phone to use on Telecom now. Since they run sim cards.Nah the best thing is, anyone can ditch telecunt and swap to another service provider in just a few minutes.

Be careful mate, the phone may be offered free but how long are you contracted to have it connected for? The important thing people don't realise is that a call plan and a contract are two different things. The call plan is what you pay to use it, the contract is how long you've agreed to stay on that call plan. Its worth it to the mobile carrier to offer free phones cause the customer agrees to say connected to their call plan for x months (Paying X dollars) and if you disconnect early you pay an early termination fee. Reason I point this out is that I've heard both voda and telecom offering "free" phones on 36 month contracts and that is bloody excessive, most phones only last about 2 years. If they haven't told you then you should check.
Works out OK for most but if your phone breaks or is stolen in contract you then have to shell out full price for a replacement phone or pay out your contract so read the fine print.
XT network not too bad but coverage is only about the same as CDMA. I don't believe its any better. Data speed however is freakin awesome but if your just using your phone for normal phone stuff you won't notice.
Sorry knee jerk reaction as I've been in telecommunications for sixteen years (9 with Telecom) and I consider the whole "free" phone thing a bit of a have.

They said two years, and thanks for ya comments Mark, I haven't paid for my last phones so a free update every two years or so is not too bad. They offered a 'loss or damage fee of $86? but I said no thanks.

XT can do a massive fucking advertising campaign with Richard Hammond & Zoe Bell getting dropped into the ocean in a shipping container...
But I can't get reception on top of the Rimutaka Hill. It has revolutionized my cellular world. Yeah.

Good man, eyes wide open. Sorry if it sounded a bit patronising (I just read it again and thought I came off like pompous twat) but you wouldn't believe the very intelligent people who get dazzled by the words free phone.
As long as your aware of what its all about it can be a really good thing to get a freebie for loyalty. What you pay for a prepaid mobile is close to what that mobile is worth cost price.

tl;dr rest of posts
My mum gave me her R6, didn't use it at all. I just lold that it has the same name as a bike.
I much prefer nokia tbh. When you recieve a message on the R6 you have to go options>reply>text message instead of just a straight "reply". I use predictive and it's ok. But if you need to change a word and put punctuation after it (eg, me -> of,) it changes the word back as soon as you hit punctuation. If you hold down the erase (c) button too long it erases your whole message.
It comes with software that you use to connect with the phone and edit the calender etc. I use a micro SD card and have pictures saved on there. I'm sure there's a way to easily transfer them over but I haven't found it yet.
If only it had the easiness of use that nokias have then it would be pretty good.
However still fairly easy to use and I can't look a gift horse in the mouth, so it'll do fine.

I'm not sure if Telecom has it, but Vodafone has a $10 a month (from memory) phone insurance plan. Anything happens to it, you get it replaced.
Not worth it on small phones, but my client's phones are all $900 - $1100 worth... Some of them have a habit of closing them in car doors, drowning them etc

Not entirely true. Your phone has to be able to use the same frequency otherwise it'll have shit reception when you switch networks. My old vodafone can't use XT because it doesn't use the same band. In saying that, the wifes old vodafone can. And from experience the iphone works HEAPS better on XT than vodafone.
So just swapping the sims can cause some problems.
And whats this XT Network they're talking about?
We (wife and I) switched to XT because we had no reception at home. Fucked us off. The wife has had problems with txt not coming through when she was in the 'naki but it only lasted a day and it's been sweet since. We have noticed "issues" they've fixed as they have improved the network since starting it up (i.e. inline images within pxt messages).
In my opinion, the new networks are all about the data. They're trying to get you to use the web more from your phone because that's where they reckon the profit will come from. Mobile TV is free on XT until end of Nov so I've been abusing it :D A bit of a novelty but screw it, it's free.
And totally agree to learn how to use the camera. Last week I took some wicked shots with my phone while out for a ride. Granted it's a nice camera on the phone (Sony Ericsson) but the camera on the R6 will take reasonable photos.

Im switching back to my Samsung, the R6 wont send txts and I find it it a bastard to use compared to my previous phone. Coverage is weak, the 027 network is better, we found this out over the weekend, mine had no coverage whereas Annes 027 did, takes me back to the early Bellsouth days :bash:

No you cant switch it off but one little click sends you back to "old fart" mode :D
What a crock! Crap phone, crap approved dealer that sold it to Maha, I am still waiting for a call back after I got an answer service at 4:20 this afternoon. Great customer service from Telecom help desk. Back to old network, there had better not be any charge, as it was mentioned there is a charge to change back
XT sucks!!!!!!!!!!!

Apparently it must be a faulty handset or sim card, we need to take it back to the shop we purchased it from to get it sorted, help desk did all the tech things that could be wrong. We did not buy it from a shop, it was sold to us on the phone and arrived in a courier bag. Our nearest Telecom shop is half an hour from here minimum, not going to get a chance to do that till the weekend, and at our cost. All the while, no ability to text.
The thing that got me though, on Sunday coming back from Palmy my crappy old phone had coverage and the new one didn't! I sent messages off Marks phone that no one got!

2degrees is so win. I topped up a few weeks ago. It's perfect for me. You get 22c calling for 30 days, not just til the end of the month, plus 100 free texts. Which I happily found out I had only used 50 so far. Plus i still had $14 :D If I were on vodafone I would have used it all already.

Interesting thing happened today, I got a series of texts from Maha that were sent 10 days ago while we were attempting to "fix" his XT phone! What a friggen joke!
