It was such a choice day yesterday so i couldn't resist going for a ride after work.
Was ridding down the riverbank, I have made a cool little training track down there. Was buzzing around it for half an hour or so. On my way back home was popping some wheelies as you do, popped up a 4th gear wheelie, then unexpectedly my motor just died and it locked up. After a Quick inspection it was pretty obvious what damage was done. Somehow managed to blow the starter right out of the motor blew the casings apart leaving bits of metal everywhere:Oops:. Shes fucked.
It its rather guttering as it has only done 6hrrs on the top end rebuild.
I cant work out how and why it happened and before anyone says it had plenty of oil, so that was not the cause...
RIP my crf you did me well :bye:

Get a cheap motor out of the states there be heaps around

Yea possibly Ill look into it tho it might still cost more than its worth. The only thing i can think of that could have caused it to happen might of been oil starvation from to much time on the back wheel... hmm

i know of a complete, reasonably fresh 450 engine sitting under a bench. in nz, not sure if it will fit into the 250 frame though.

That could be an idea, slap a 450 in there might take some custom work but could be worth a go.

Not sure yet, that was just what i could see. I haven't pulled the motor out to execute any further investigations yet, but id imagine its pretty fucked but everything else on the bike is sweet.

Would never have considered that, but yes - good thinking.
I take it the sump is still full?

Strange is this an X model?
I would have thought a bike could handle a few mins on its back wheel easily
Be interesting to see why and how much its gonna cost to fix

Yea it's a X model hence the starter getting blown out of the casing. Was modded up tho similar build to booms. It was weird tho was always on the back wheel the whole time Ive owned it. Yea it's probably not worth fixing I'm probably better of putting the money towards a new bike.

theres the answer!
Hell, even a CR250 2 smoker would be cool in the smalelr frame.
I'd swap the KX for one :D
B0000M
10th September 2009, 15:20
frame size is the same as a cr250 - different frame, but same size
500 alloy frame bikes sell for heaps!

Oh really? What a bugger. I always remember stories of RC on a 125 framed 250 coz hes a little on the short side (as am I, but my weight makes up for it ;) ). Guess the 4's are different
And yeah, those AF bikes :Punk:

thats odd. because my CR125 was the same size as my CR250, if not bigger
could be different for other brands though

I always thought they just changed the mounts and cradle from 125-250
did the starter some how try to engage then lock up maybe you could find a cheap engine with a stuffed top end and put your head and barrel on it

Yea mate replaced all the valves with nice new stainless ones and a shiny new wiseco forged piston as well as all the gaskets cam chain etc.
I might pull it apart and investigate this mystery further over the weekend and when i do will take some pics of the damage.

My mate did something similar on his DRZ400 out at thunder! I can't remember why, maybe something to do with the resorvuor being full but an airlock??? in the tube or frame under it??? Blew something through the front of the engine anyway. Stripped it all down and managed to get an engineer to v out, weld up and machine the cases. Was a good job and no further problems!!

Shit that sounds expensive mate how much did that set you back?? God forbid the 2smoker chucks a leg outa bed, not likely but it can happen?

At one of the first Ausv8 races at Puke, car came into pits streaming oil and the pit boss reckoned it was an electrical fault, when quizzed, he replied that a conrod had knocked the alternator off.... Hadn't heard that one before, we giggled, they cried.....

possom bourne motorsport have had similar issues, they told me the car was making a rather loud knock for a few stages, then the offical reason for retiremnet was an eletrical fault, the conrod had severed the wiring loom after if tried to exit the block,

yes he did!
Not sure of the process and had very little do do with alloy welding. But from my panel beating days many years ago I think you have to V the joins, uniformly heat the casings, weld them and let them cool so they don't distort??? Sounds tricky but take it to someone that knows what they are doing and its pretty easy!

Yep, Reckless is right ,i have seen Harley side cases welded succesfully with this method and they came in about 8 different peices a real jigsaw ..i think the faces still had to be ground so they wouldnt leak

Probably something to do with the wheelie..
it shouldn't be tho, bikes of these days are made to be on the back wheel most of the time, let alone how almost vertical you can get them going up hill climbs.
I'm wondering if the bottom end just spat the dummy because it wasn't happy about the top end getting a rebuild and having lots more compression etc

Or the starter did try and engage when it wasnt supposed to would be my guees
