A couple of months back, meet up with Death/Draco/Boomer and someone else and had a cool wee pootle up to Maungawhai where we had a great feed (nice new menu and awesome food) and a couple of tots in the sun. I allowed the three Aucklanders to stay behind me  that was until a TL 1000 took us all and several in the group couldn't contain their inner *argh* and went on the hunt.

Yay! :wari:  A WART thread at last!

Come on all you WARTers out there, dont be shy, share your WART experiences. I am off to find the last WART ride I went on, it was interesting to say the least. The food was crap, actually beyond crap really, a frozen pie nuked while you wait sort of aweful

Beyond is everywhere else stoopid, not just north of here as you may be suggesting, in saying that, its still 500 odd Ks to the Cape so there is a shit load ground to cover in all directions.

III once said that 'he hates it north of the bridge, too much SH1 to be had''.
Not so, I can make from coast to coast, thats East/West and only touch SH1 for about 200mts.

My apologies ...

As a self-declared smarty-pants, you must be one of the few to take me seriously. My post in this instance/case was unwarranted. My apologies to all in the Warkworth area.

My time spent on roads (and in pubs) "north of the dish" have always been enjoyable. Those that take the time to get off highway one, will not be dissapointed.

Again ... My unreserved apology to any I have angered in this respect.

I have only been there once, in full gear we stopped for a coffee. They wanted a $10 cover to get in because they had a band playing a bit later on. Told them we were only having a coffee not staying for the night, pretty obvious really the way we were dressed, but no, they insisted on us paying before we went in.

I didn't think the coffee would be worth $14 odd a cup and made a bit of noise :innocent: They let us in for a coffee, which was actually not bad.

The Sun came out and so did hundreds of bikers, well I didnt count them to be honest, just seemed more than 20. I think there were well over 400 on the WIMA ride (we did not attend) but I spoke to someone at Puhoi later about it. That explained all the pink persons about. You meet the nicest people on days like today, some are not as Crazy as you may think and some are not a Small as you may think and some are just sooooooooo generous (click)....

What a lovely day for a ride  A few squally showers were a little off putting, but as some of us dont melt in the rain (not pointing the finger here at any girly pants in our midst  ) we took off for Mangawhai. Lovely cruise, have to say I missed my bike very much, but her tank will be cured soon.

Feasted my eyes on a very tasty Buell  but she sure needs a good clean man, what a cutie

Absolutely hooned it back to Warkworth, as you do  for a lovely drink and relax. That short sharp rain belt was appreciated by me anyway, hung my helmet out and gave it a jolly good wash

Try a chicken, bacon, cheese burger when you are next there, it was really yummy. Maha's photo skills should be along soon, but I have to say I was dissappointed the one horse power invasion will not be included for your viewing pleasure :D

Riding naked in the wind is alot of fun.....

Stunning night for ride out, lovin' the cool crisp rural night air, the only effluent I could smell was on the road. Shot down to Albany for a meet up with Unsanitary Rules, had a massive pizza for one and washed it down with some coke (which tasted not like coke) The ride home in the dark was better than the ride down. These impromptu rides are well worth the effort.

Yes folks it was one out of the box for the WART team today, a last minute decision to get out today lead us to the sunny Norf, with the wonderful tour guide Laava and his gorgeous better half Mamma Jo.

Cruising through Wellsford we spied the regular Sunday ride crew ( I think) at the caltex refuelling, hope they had as good a run as we did.

We went all over the place, through some fab twisties ( why is it I only feel sick on the back of a bike up Norf anyway? ) I wished I had my own bike out, man those roads are primo, I could see the pattern and so wanted to be going Weeeeeeeeee. However, I was a good girl. It was so nice to travel on unfamiliar roads for a change and to see some fantastic scenery to boot! Heaps of pics taken some fantastic food encountered. We have to give this place the biggest RAP. Honestly, the food was divine. I was a bit scared the Laava was going to swallow his plate in one gulp :D

I will post a few more pics shortly :innocent:

A real treat to ride on roads for the first time.
Whareora rd? was that the road we rode out on?....:woohoo:
Pataua North/Sout/Whangarei Heads and surrounding bays.
Urquharts/Reotahi/McLeod Bays.
Parua Tavern for lax out on the lawn with a cool drink.
Some great pics taken, even some while on the move.
That Lunch place was a great idea, a must stop for anyone heading out that way.

Yeah we don't make many quiet getaways

The black one at the top (where your bikes were) is Mark's, the other one down below is Bretts. We shot straight from there down to Puhoi, after dealing with the bloody traffic I needed a rest stop all over again.

''What to do''? was asked around 11.30am this morning.
Ride to Piha? mmmmm never been there before so, yeah ok.
Head out through sh17 (damn its rough in places's along there) and onto the top of the North Western.
Exit at Ta Atutu and head out to where we think Piha is.
As it turned out, we were a bit off the beaten' track, ended up Mountain rd (I didnt know that road or where it went) so turned around after being a height of around 1000mts. Great view from up there though, right back over the city and out to Rangitoto.
Made our way back to Henderhole, got a burger and phoned GB who was already at Piha, I explained that we were lost and currently on Lincoln rd.
Had asked a you chap at Maccas (he seemed intelligent and spoke english) he pointed us in the right direction.
Nice road in (and out for that matter) I may let someone else tell the story about a certain 'broke bloke' who sang to us while there...

Mom
7th March 2010, 18:15
There were a few things that will stick in my mind after our little jaunt out to Piha today for sure.

1. I did not realise the CB1300 was a motard :weird: Not too often I do the short sharp intake of breath and clench everything I have at the same time on the back of Maha's bike unless some other road user is intent on taking us out, but I managed it today  Not sure what the front wheel hit at the apex of a fairly tight corner but it made for an interesting exit from the corner. Well done lovely man
2. The scenery out west is nothing short of spectacular.
3. Maps suck :D
4. We need a stebel on the CB
5. There is a particular bloke at Piha that needs to attend to his anger management. I really dont appreciate being stood over with finger pointed while being yelled at moments after removing my helmet at an Auckland beach. I dont much care if you are a Neighbourhood watch warden or what ever else you were yelling at me, next time I will not be so polite and most likely will tell you to FUCK OFF! :innocent:
6. Best of the day though... Being serenaded (though he attempted to convince me it was busking) by a psychiatrically challenged gentleman at the cafe on the beach. Far canal he was funny! Absolutely gorgeous/halarious/harmless and annoying all at once. Before I could go and pay for his milkshake GB stepped up to the plate. Hope he found his way back to his Mothers bach in one piece.

Fantastic day!

Opened the curtains this morning around 7.30 am and was greeted with blue skies/sunshine and an urge to ride.
Lets go and see George Formby in Paihia.
Left at 9.15 heading North...gas up at Wellsford. Spotted three Whangarei riders across the road. Grant/that chick on the green/black Gladious and a very nice SP1.
They must have got away early...:corn:
Tanks full ...next stop Maungatapere at the foot of Mangakahia rd (Twin Bridges rd)
Need a piss by then anyway, Anne used the Cafe' (yes theres a Cafe' there now) while I used the side of the building.
Twin Bridges rd was in stunning form (yes we paid our taxes, read sentence above)
Stopped at Kaikohe looking for something to eat...very limited options, a pie from the shop?..na fuck that, I can wait till Paihia.
Paihia greeted us with Sunshin/warm air and glass like water.
We found Mr George Formby's Cafe'..now if you ever want a supburb flat white etc, just around the corner from Formby's is this nice.....na jus kiddin'...you wont find a better coffee or smoothie. A must try when ever in the area.
Nice to meet you Mark, we'll swap recipies next time...:innocent:
Could have settled in there to be honest but, we wanted to get back before dark geared up and hit the road.
Saw the Whanga's three around the Waipu area on the way home.
400 K's in absoluted beautiful riding conditions...:scooter:

What a fantastic day out!

Bit nipply early on, the fog was intense, but clear skies indicated a fab weather day ahead.

NO secrets on here apparently, I had a leak at Maungatapere  Nice Cafe there now, but seething with more senior members of society, fresh from church  I was busting and simply had to wait while these lovelies made their way inside :violin:

The twin bridges road is better than I remember it, Millie loved the corners in there. I was on a mission to watch my right hand corner lines, as it has been pointed out to me I use the "racing line" and need to apex a bit later. Great road to practise that on I have to say. Millie handles like a dream

Bit wet in places, and the tinges of green indicate that care needs to be taken, but what a road  We took a bit of a long route to Paihia, but according to local feedback we made the right call, the road we planned on taking is ripped up and horrible with road works.

Speaking of roadworks, they are everywhere at the moment. I would have thought it a bit late in the year to be resurfacing roads, but what do I know? The Twin Bridges Road however, is in top condition

Rolled into Paihia, and turned down the road that houses george formby's cafe. Did not even have my helmet off before being accosted by this bloke

Makes a mean coffee

Thanks Mark, fantastic hospitality, I LOVE that "Everyone does Poohs" poster in your bog

A chill was in the air, the sun was doing its best to entice the bikes to be wheeled out of thier resting spot..didn't take much to be honest, we had decided yesterday that tomorrow being today (Sunday) would be a ride day.
Paparoa/Oakleigh rd was a callin'. Had not been up that way for some time..
I remember thinking, that at one time, that road was my bestest (until I found another) but it still rates and today only cemented what a great bit of road it is.
Managed to check out a Cafe' at the Marsden Roundabout area...coffee and a little tart...
The coast road between Waipu and Langs was stunning...Langs beach doesn't get much better than it was today.
Lunch was at Mangawhai Tavern...more on that later.:shifty:

What a kerfufull some people can make of the simplest things. Nice older couple for company at lunch time, along with a gaggle of other bikers. Lucky the tide was running the right way or that woman may still be waiting for her food

Bit of a surprise though, this couple ordered childrens meals, they told us they were not bit eaters. When the meals were delivered the woman told them off for ordering a kids meal as they were only for 10 and unders! Nice customer service that I have to say, not.

As usual, Millie preformed wonderfully, lovely day to be out and about, albeit I managed to suffer from a bit of a brain fart, we came through unscathed.

Only ever been on that road once...a group ride where there were two (yes two) bins...one was caused by a cattle truck on a tight corner that scared the shit out of one rider which caused her to react in such a way that the rider behind her had no choice but put her bike in the ditch. Another bike ended up in the bush a short while after..
That road is probably best done not as a big group...I had a moment at Whale bay on that particular ride myself..:(
Had a feed at the Duke and caught the ferry across to Paihia and rode home down SH1...a big day out and I was shagged by the time I got home.

Went a tad further than Mangawahi...rode about 140Ks NNE of Warkworth.
A few showers crossed our path once the road got all twisty...wet conditions coupled with mud on the road in places (from farm trucks/tractors exiting paddocks) made for a slower ride through that bit. Was a touch slippery in places...next time, I shall order up some sun.
But anyway..what a cool place to graze and drink coffee...food was excellent and a number of other bikers must have thought the same.
The ride out was sunshine all the way, once out of the twisty bits...
The bikes are very very dirty and shall be washed before being put away...

Quick stop at Te Hana on the way back to get a pic of a Trike Carving...very cool.

As stated in the 1st post, these rides are 'Impromptu spur of the moment lets ride' which ends up being (90% of the time) the best time spent on a bike.
We tend to look for places more.... not usually ventured/frequented? rather than the 'norm'...

I've just got back from an extended weekend there with some geology students.

There's a small settlement and camp ground etc but it's mostly known as a big source of fossils from the late Jurassic period. However, the human skeleton found on the beach there is big news at the moment.

I've only gone there via Huntly, Pokeno or Bombay and the road is sealed all the way. The road leading south from Port Waikato is gravel though.

From a ride rating aspect, it's not that "interesting" going from either Pokeno or Bombay (but still good) but from Huntly via Glen Murray, it's much better.

Yeah, my problem is that if we are to ride south of here, its an hour on the M/Way which is ok if you ride a Lazy-e-Boy but damn is it boring?
We normally only go that way if we are on a mission.
You will find that 9/10 rides that I/we do are in a northern direction, much better playground.

Right, pencilled in - lunch at the Pepper Tree, Coromandel on the 16th.

16th is a sat? I have kids that morning I think. Sundays best. But last weekend of the month I have them both days.

Yep, 16th is a Sat. Sunday is fine by us.

17th it is then.

Irene has pointed out that my memory is not what it should be. The Pepper Tree, although very nice, is not what I was thinking of. There's a cafe down the road that I can't remember the name of that wasn't bad the last time we were there. That's the one I meant.

Did you do the whole loop or half?
We did it once, a figure eight covered 700kms...but its like a 650 km ride from here if the full loop is done.
250 for the full loop plus 400 return from Thames. 650Kms.
180 half loop plus the 400 = 580kms.

Top half. I think if we'd done the full I would've been frozen solid by the time I got home.

Met at Z Takanini at about 10am. Some nice back roads through Clevedon, Hunua and Miranda. Lunch in Coromandel then up over the hill through Whitianga. Stopped in Tairua for the loo and a chin-wag. Then easy does it through the Kopu-Hikuai road - no ice but a bit of ice-grit and wet roads.

474km round trip from Mairangi Bay.

Loved the ride but I really was a tad under-dressed for the conditions. It was OK when the sun came out but once it went down it got cold fast. I nearly didn't make it home because my brain was cold. Coming through Tirakau drive I saw someone coming to the end of a driveway in front of me and thought "they'll stop". I NEVER do that. Of course they didn't. Instnct kicked in and I ended up lane-splitting between them and the guy in the right lane.

Thank God for experience. Being cold is probably the most underrated hazard for us bikers. Cold is one thing, but you can get hypothermic on a bike very easily.

Years ago I sold a bike to a chap in Dargaville, I said I would take it to him on the Saturday, and being true to my word, I did just that.
I shouldn't have, the weather was crap...but it got way worse the further north I got.
I had to stop at Ruawai because of the shaking. A hot pie and smoke and away I went again.
Anne was following in the car.
All I had on under my gear was shorts and a T Shirt. It took me all the way home in the car, under a jacket with the heater to stop shaking.
Stupid thing to do looking back now, but, the guy got his bike and I had the money.

I can ride in any weather now, I have the gear for it...just gotta remember to take it..bring on August!

Indeed.

I'm also having to get used to the fact that I can't take the cold like I used to. I used to be quite comfortable cycling in weather that would freeze my water bottle, wearing just summer lycra.

Same here. I used to able to handle cold but a bit of age has seen to that. Its really the first time my leather jacket has been to cold. But seeing as its a summer jacket thats not a surprise. Im glad I had a spare jumper with me.

And Hot grips were awesome.....

You two need to have the Men-At-Pause  never feel the cold, far too friggen hot almost all the time. Summer clothes year round, no blankets on the bed, NO electric blankets either :nono: Dont turn the heater on, or TURN THE BLOODY THING OFF is the norm. Personal fans come into their own

But, cold hands and cold feet, and, when you have your arms out of the blankets in the dead of winter and bring them under the blankies to warm up, the squeals of delight from the other in the bed are priceless :innocent:

Not an issue I have.....

But a lesson in carrying gear for all weathers I guess.
