1988 FZR250. I just had a new speedo fitted, new rear brake pads and brake fluid. Indicators fixed, new rear fairings (needs a paintjob). Exup valve fixed, it was frozen shut. Carbs need attention, quoted by Red Baron as $700-$1000 to fix (flat spots and poor fuel economy). Front brake caliper needs an overhaul quoted 1 hours work $67 at cyclespot. There is a photo in my profile, I will try and upload some newer photos soon. How much do you think I should advertise it for? I can't afford to mess with the carbs as my job as a Geotech is coming to an end, so it's either a cheap bike or a car for me.

maybe your carbs could be to do with crap that builds up in them.
i remember when i had an fzr250 it wasnt always the best to start and kinda had the same thing.
my mech told me that lots of the 250's from japan had this problem.
anyways the mechanic got the carbs put into some special bath or machine thingy that eats all the crap away and makes em all good. worked a treat.
you could try that first maybe?

Ah, I will ring Red Baron. The guy at spectrum said they have a sonic something, cleaning thingy (man that sounds stupid).

Another thought Magua.
Is it only the carbs that are the problem?
Try cleaning the carbs yourself - you've got nothing to lose at this point.
Look here for some good reading (http://faq.f650.com/FAQs/CarbMiscFAQ.htm). While it doesn't pertain to your bike, the info is good.
Also, enquire on the exup brotherhood forum... (http://pub28.ezboard.com/bexupbrotherhood)
Failing that, have you tried sourcing some replacement carbs from overseas? It may not be as expensive as you think...

A mate of mine watched that movie about 20 times (yes, he's a finance lover). He knew just about the entire movie off by heart, and would keep quoting random sections (not just one line) of the movie.
I told him I had no idea what he was saying, and that he needed a life, but he never believed me. Still doesn't...

Victorian Motorcycle Wreckers
Google.

There are some carburators on tardme, an expired listing. I have the person's email so I can contact them. How would I know if these would be any good though. For all I know over the internet they could be just as fucked as my ones. From what I got from the guy at spectrum there is no way just to look at a carb and see if it's good or shite.

Correct-a-mundo.
You raise a good point there. Dig Frosty out to come have a look at the carbs if they are in the Auckland region. I'm sure he won't mind me volunteering him .
Have you inquired about the price of a new standard jet kit?

That may be a better bet than getting some different carbs.
Is the problem with the carbs simply a jet one, or is it diaphragms, jets, floats, seals, needles, or what?
main jets will run you about $15-20 each (4 needed), pilot airs about the same, but as for diaphragms, forget it.
On another note, buckets and bits have a 2KR and 3LN being wrecked at the moment. These models of FZR250 should have carbs that are okay to use on your bike. email them at parts@motorcyclesnz.co.nz
Despite what some people on the site have said I've found Bryce and Brenda to be reasonably helpful with getting you the parts they need.

I've emailed buckets and bits and victorian motorcycle wreckers. I've been trying to get my bike in to be looked at, but honda won't touch it, red baron and spectrum are booked and they both don't really want to touch it either. Spectrum took a quick look at the exup and listened to the bike and said he'd rather not take on the job as it would be a waste of my money and his time. I'll try and get a friend to take the bike to red baron sometime during the week as they said they would have a listen. What I need though is for someone to actually look at them and see what is wrong with them, so I'll try and get it booked in somewhere. I asked red baron to clean the carbs and it sounded like they didn't want the job, as mike went on about how fzrs are a mess with carb probs, blah blah blah.
