i just got in the door and didnt see any accidents, though an ambo and firey both went flying past at different times. who knows where they were headed for though.

EDIT: i was told of an off at sanson this morning... someone showing off shot out of shell and rear ended a car. no injuries, but the bike is apparently a wreck. co worker told me at the stadium.

awesome ride today everyone... well done! good ride down... ive never felt so comfortable in a group before.
adrian: you are easily one of the best riders i have ever had the pleasure of sharing a road with. congrats! nice to meet both you and james, and hope to ride with you both again.

had a good ride home once i got past peka peka... for someone reason it was a total traffic jam until then... dunno why. sat on 110 almost the whole way home. only one cop who was parked in plain view with his tail lights going. rain started in levin, but i managed to outrun it until about sanson, where it settled in for good.

Plan is to park one bike per car park (bring coinage for meters) along selected roads in central palmy, then hand out flyers and get sigs on the petition etc.

Assemble in square before 8:30am on the 19th December, numbers of bikes there will determine which streets we park along.

Protest is designed for maximum impact with a minimum of inconvenience to the public, so we plan to park along one side of the selected roads, as well as stationing groups of bikes near selected pedestrian choke points.

Flyers and petition details will be added to this thread within a few days.

Put the word out, the more the merrier!

Is it able to be maybe done here, similar to other regions whereby we have a couple of bikes of different styles,i.e tourer, sports scotter etc.Have a heap of flyers to hand out,and posters on bikes showing accident stats relevant to the cause.Ideal place is square and maybe by info centre, say from 11.00-2.00pm.Bikes obviously need to be rego and wof, maybe also get a farm bike from bike shop as well,to show that road ridden bikes are regoed, while farm bikes are not, thereby not paying acc levy, but still are included in bike accidents statistics.

I am keen to do this.

A tandem with a quad, farmbike and motocross bike would be good and signage to say thats what the public are being motor-vehicle levied for

XP@

I thought this was already covered:

Off road bikes we cannot prove they are not included in the stats.
Farm Bikes are supposedly covered under the work account.

If you really want to get public sympathy then ask if they would intentionally give ACC their holiday pay or give up their well paid job in favour of working 30hours a week at minimum wage.

If the levy has to increase to maintain this type of cover then so be it. BUT it should be done fairly and with respect to the Woodhouse report and the five principles of ACC. The amendment bill currently in progress is failing these big time. Oh and the "final" levies announced last week are still subject to the bill being passed in it's current form, this is still not a certainty.

A maximum of 158 strategic carparks for 2 hours is hardly going to cause a major inconvenience in the grand scheme of things. It will however cause one hell of a visual impact and perhaps open a few eyes!

ItsTheHamma
14th December 2009, 22:02
which 158 strategic carparks? Maybe I am a pussy but the whole idea is to get the public on our side, and I don't think this is doing us any favours at all. Anything that inconveniences the cage drivers at this time of year will

This nix myth quote summs up how they intend to shaft claimants. useful to bear in mind.

"Initiatives underway this year covering physiotherapy, high-tech imaging, hearing, self-harm, rehabilitation, criminal disentitlements, and tighter income compensation will save more than $100 million per year and ensure the burden of fixing ACC does not just fall on levy payers.

ACC Is targeting ALL NZ but especially those who have had an accident.
ACC can make you take a job on min wage even if you were on $100k/year.

The government is trying to sell off ACC. They did not raise the petrol levy because it does not fit with the insurance company model. Instead they chose hike vehicle levies a lot. Making the vehicle levy less affordable, this will make it more expensive for those who still pay it.

The Woodhouse principles area seems to merge in to its self, lots of text...
perhaps tie them in to parts of the Ammendment act that contravene them. (i've a few linked in my oral submission notes)

How about changing what can We do to what can YOU do?
And include: Contact your MP and ask them not to support the act. (with local mp name, phone and email)

It's unjustified section could probably do with some shoring up, or probably combining with the it's happened section to really show the people on the street it is effecting them, and their kids (loss of legacy).

Will mull it over on way home....

I agree. I've seen many people refer to this ACC issue as a 'fight' or a 'war'. tell me..

Has anyone here seen a war that doesn't at least inconvenience someone in some way?

Has anyone seen a fight without at least someone being pissed off for some reason?

Now I want to avoid pissing people off just as much as anyone else here. But there's no way to solve something like this without some unwanted side effects. Let's be honest here, just the fact that we get around on two wheels instead of four is enough to piss some people off. shit happens. I'll be there saturday morning.

Yes it will put a few ppl out for two hours by 11am bikes will be gone but point will be made and hopefully a few ppl have their eyes opened that this is serious and affects them as well

most non bikers I have talked to & the elderly at the RSA do not mind a bit of inconvenience to keep the message going, esp now they realise how much the changes in ACC will actually affect them personally ... This will not be settled quickly, make no mistake about that

"Q: Why doesn’t ACC collect levies from those who participate in sporting and other recreational activities, instead of just targeting motorcyclists?

A: ACC currently collects levies for non-work injuries from earners and from the Government. To date ACC has not been able to establish a cost-effective mechanism for levying high-risk, non-work activities, but there is on-going work in this area.

A maximum of 158 strategic carparks for 2 hours is hardly going to cause a major inconvenience in the grand scheme of things. It will however cause one hell of a visual impact and perhaps open a few eyes!

I'm afraid I have to disagree. It's the LAST Saturday before Christmas and there will be a lot of people wanting to park in town so they don't have to walk miles with their purchases. I'm going to avoid PN for this very reason on Saturday morning as I had an accident three weeks ago (not on the bike) and can't walk very far. If I got there and found a pile of bikes parked there for two hours, I would be pissed off - and I am a motorcyclist myself, not just a member of the general public.

I think the bikoi was fantastic and garnered a lot of public support. This kind of action, the week before Christmas, is likely to undo a lot of that public goodwill and I doubt it will be regained easily.

This is my personal opinion, but the majority of motorcyclists I've spoken to recently agree. I also think turning up to National party events to show how pissed off motorcyclists are is also the wrong way to go about things.

I'm happy to buy the teeshirt, support the bikoi, speak up, etc, but I have no desire to alienate the general public by inconveniencing them at this time of the year. Park up somewhere, walk along the streets and hand out flyers - but I think the backlash from this kind of action will surprise you.

i get where you are coming from, but this time its not about bikers, its about educating the public that this affects them as well. This close to xmas it is also a great opportunity. Next year the average citizen will have paid an extra (200 or over i think?) to the government in unessesary levies, xmas is one time where money is tight, so people may be more receptive to such a message. And with many family gatherings and time off etc hopefuly people will research whats going on, and discus with others, to get the message out there.

Protest is designed for maximum impact with a minimum of inconvenience to the public, so we plan to park along one side of the selected roads, as well as stationing groups of bikes near selected pedestrian choke points.

can i just piont out that the plan is not to take up all the parks, unlike the protest planed for auckland on the same day,

Recent events have changed nothing, we are still going ahead with the "Who's Next" campaign

What:

Meet at Viaduct Habour (the car park in the centre, past the Maritime Museum) using up all the available car parks.
Have some biker friendly food and drink in the area while educating the public.
Ride up Queen Street. (Route TBC)
Deliver Christmas Cards and Presents in smaller groups.

When:

Saturday 19th December

Meeting Viaduct 7:30 am
Rollout Viaduct 10 am

What else:

Please send me names and addresses for presents. Still room for more

Theflash is printing out some Christmas cards. Thanks!!!!

CrAzYMoFo is supplying the coal. Good on ya!!!!

PrincessBandit is supplying the oranges. Sorry you can't make it yourself

The trouble is, I get where you are coming from too - but I still disagree with this type of protest action even if it's *only* taking up one side of the road.

We own six bikes and three cars, my husband works for an employer and I'm self-employed, so I am well aware that everything we do will incur extra ACC levies. I'd be just as pissed off if a car club did the same thing, parking a pile of hot rods in the same place. Or if a group of self-employed people marched up the centre of the road, disrupting traffic. I guess what I'm saying is that something like the bikoi was kick-ass (apologies in advance to Hitcher, kick-arse doesn't quite have the same ring to it) and really brought the message home - but taking up parks at one of the busiest times of the year isn't going to win you many friends. I think you'd find the same response if you did it at your local supermarket on a weekend too - but that could be classed as private property (some are) and you could be likely to be told to piss off.

Good luck to you if you think this is the right way to go about it, but I will be very interested to see what kind of response you get from the general public tomorrow. No doubt the Standard will run something on it so you'll get publicity either way.

exactly, and word of mouth should get heaps more people edumacated. When I asked people if they were aware of the ACC swindle, many said oh yes, but I'm not a biker so it doesnt affect me :slap: well now they know it does!

Also there should be a wee writeup going in the manawatu standard 2moro, hoping it'll be written in a way to spread the word even more.
