From the Herald this morning
A man died instantly yesterday when his motorcycle hit an articulated truck head-on about 11am on State Highway 1, 16km north of Amberley in Canterbury.
Amberley police said the man was thrown from the motorcycle and mangled parts of the bike were wedged under the bonnet of the truck when it stopped down the highway and caught fire. The truck driver was uninjured.
Rest in peace.

The roads up there are all straight like the desert road is.
Quick mental note to self: drop some flowers off next time I pass his white cross.

oooo -not good - RIP
Is it just me being more aware of these accidents this year, or are more bikers dying lately? I really don't like what I'm reading - and how often I am reading it...

Damn!
That would be round about Waipara where there is generally pretty good visibility. Possibly a truck coming out of the weighbridge and effluent disposal facility which is about 1 km south of Waipara?
RIP brother

From the Press
A motorcyclist is dead after crossing the centre line and slamming into a truck on State Highway 1 in North Canterbury yesterday.
Waipara chief fire officer Paul Harris said the north-bound truck burst into flames from the impact of the smash near Home Creek Bridge, Waipara.
The motorcyclist was killed instantly. He had not yet been identified, police said.
Harris said the truck's driver escaped from the burning cab unharmed. Several passing motorists tried to douse the flames, including a motorhome driver carrying a fire extinguisher, but the fire was too intense.
Three fire crews from North Canterbury attended the blaze which gutted the cab of the refrigeration truck. They had the fire under control in less than 10 minutes, Harris said.
Police investigating the smash closed the highway for about five hours and motorists were diverted.
As everyone has said, there's far too many bikers dying at the moment. Or maybe it's always been that way, and now we're on this site we just hear aout them?
RIP

Head on with a truck!
Can see that happening on a bend (was this on a bend?) but on a straight road you have to be looking at the scenery or checking your watch or something.
Suicide would be pretty reliable at 200 plus clicks into something travelling at 100 the other way. The impact would be greater than jumping out of a plane without a paracute.

210kph is the max speed of falling isn't it?
From rec.skydivingFAQ:
"However, by diving or "standing up"in free fall, any experienced skydiver can learn to reach speeds of over 160-180MPH. Speeds of over 200MPH require significant practice to achieve. The record free fall speed, done without any special equipment, is 321MPH. Obviously, it is desirable to slow back down to 110MPH before parachute opening."
Still, hitting a truck head on at any speed is unpleasant.

20th April last year, my mates zxr got stolen
27th April, I had my accident (so i only have to wait about 8 more months to get my pin out of my tibia)
Yesturday, my mate did a nice job of wrecking his bike.
May last year, i know of 3 people that had life threatning crashes.
May 2003 my dad dropped the 955i in the Kaimais (on Diesel at 120), giving him and his GF heavy cuts and bruises..........

Saw the photo in the Press. Truck has wound up maybe 150m from corner on opposite side of road, hard right lock so possibly pushed or towed there after the fact.
From biker's perspective it was a righthander bend, no speed indiication on the bend sign. The guy must have only clipped the truck to have been thrown clear or he would have been bikermash on the front going backwards at whatever speed the truck was doing at impact.

Anyone know what sort of bike? I was up that way with a group playing golf in Culverden around noon, came back after playing golf in Hanmer on Saturday and staying the night up there. Came back through Amberley around 4.00-4.30 yesterday, didnt see anything? Saw alot of bikes on the road, big flock(?) of Ducs out plus plenty of others.

So a guy on a bike crosses the centreline and kills himself on the front of a vehicle driven by a guy doing nothing wrong and everyone is all tea biscuits and sympathy for the biker
What about the poor bastard driving the truck?

He ain't dead.
I think you hit the nail on the head - HE has to live with the knowledge that somebody died after hitting the front of his truck, even if it was not his fault the poor bugger will go through life thinking "what if I had just done this or that, maybe he might have missed me..."
The dead bugger? No amount of sympathy is going to do diddly squat for him.

Off course guys.
Yeah truckie feels like shit, asks himself 100 questions, been that guy,(not death, thank godlike deitys,) But MAN DOWN!!!
We all face that prospect!
Not just by being riders, but by being alive.
The rider went out doing something that was a joy/passion/need for his lifeforce.
I've seen the big 'C' in action, and a lot of his nasty mates.
I know that going out! doing something that defines your life is a lot better than shitting blood into nappies.
Kia Kaha brother down, I only hope your loved ones have some piece of you to gain peace from>

I'm hoping it was no-one from the Ducati Rally, which was at St Arnaud.
If someone finds out who it was/what type of bike can they please post?
I never like seeing bikers killed regardless of who's at fault. But Kickaha I do agree with you that it is dreadful for those who are in their own lanes minding their own business too.
