I'm the inmate getting more stuff made, as I'm getting a version 2 plate off Ryan I will have a version 1 plate going spare, but if you are after one get it off Ryan to exhaust his supplies first.
P.s I'm more than happy with the quality of my version one plate I got off Ryan some months ago, i just wanted a bigger one to suit the tail bag i have. I also have a light plate on order from Ryan also as I've seen Joe's and it's good stuff.

I met up with Joe yesterday and rode Joe's bike back to back with mine and I couldn't believe the difference, I've never ridden 2 bikes of the same model and year that were so different.
Where Joe's had sag and was compliant and absorbed everything mine had very little sag, was rock solid and bounced over everything. At rest mine sat about an inch higher.
Any ideas on where to look for differences? Joe's bike is where I want mine to be. Mine has the standard 140/255 spring fitted, I couldn't see the numbers on Joe's spring due to how the spring sits.
The rear shock on mine has just been rebuilt by a KTM dealer to standard specs and is currently set to the factory soft settings

Any ideas on where to look for differences? If they have the same springs, then the primary difference will be preload - more preload will make the bike sit up higher and feel harsh.
Measure the static & rider sag on both bikes, with the same rider on board. From that you should be able to work out if the preload and/or springs are different... maybe.

Thanks Colin, I've already played around with the preload to see what difference it made, softening it up just made the ride harsh over bumps but didn't give anymore sag. It's now on 6 turns in from fully out which is factory recommended soft.

Yeah, except they are both the standard model, and the spring markings confirm mine has a standard shock and spring in it, not an S one. I've played with the preload enough to decide it's not that. Next will be rebound then. The shock was rebuilt because the rebound adjuster was seized, now that it's working I set it on the factory soft setting also but will try backing it off a bit.

It's working to some degree, as I could feel a difference between fully out and 6 turns in but the difference wasn't great though, certainly not spongy to firm but firm and a bit harsh fully out to firm and harshness removed after 6 turns in.
It's hard to turn and I haven't tried to see how far in it goes.

8th March 2010, 21:28
I've a feeling, but you should definitely check, that the starting point for the hydraulic preload is not a fixed point i.e. it is still a screwed on collar that is the anchor point. Even with the hydraulic preload backed right off there still may be more preload than recommended. I think KTM does preload in mm from free spring length. Maybe you can JMJ's spring length with 0 hydraulic preload vs yours?

Sorry I didnt explain myself very well, I'll try again. On the shock body itself the hydralic preload adjustor (think of it as the slave where as the knob you were turning is the master) has to be attached some how. I strongly suspect that there is a collar (or set of rings) that is screwed onto the shock body that the hydralic preload slave pushes against. There has to be something like this so that the spring can be removed. Have a look at the WP 4014 Fusion shock vs the 4014 Emulsuion shock. The hydralic preload slave ring is pretty obvious and the collar with all the holes is comon to both shocks.
Emulsion
http://www.wpsuspension.biz/products/images/4014_emulsion.jpg
Fusion
http://www.wpsuspension.biz/products/images/4014_fusion.jpg
So if this colar is screwed on to much then even with the hydralic preload backed right off you may have more preload than JMJ does with a few turns on the hydralic preload. Think of this as the "base preload" that you cant go below with the hydralic preload.
As I mentioned before KTM is bound to have speced the mm of "base preload". Two ways to check this base preload. A - extend the shock as far as it will go, measure the spring length and compare with free spring length (no idea what this is) and diff is base preload. Does it mach KTM spec? B - second and best way is to take of all preload measure spring length and then put on KTM spec base preload.
Hope this helps. I've not had a look at the shock on my bike so I may be barking completelty up the wrong tree but I suspect I'm right (else I wouldnt have typed this). Feel free to tell me I've got it all wrong and I'm a complete plonker. A quick look at my bike tonight will confirm one way other the other.
Cheers R

Yep, the Ohlins on the PD has exactly the arrangement as the Fusion.
I've not pulled all the panels off the bike yet to see if the 950 is the same but having a look through threads on the net indicates it's not.
As i interpret it on the 950 winding the adjustment up pushes oil into a hydraulic arrangement in the top of the shock which preloads force against the spring.

So I did some further playing tonight and what I summarised above appears to be true, winding the preload in moves a hydraulic arrangement on top of the shock which loads force onto the spring.
Here's some pics, check out the top of the shock body and you can clearly see the difference.
The first pic is preload right out, the 2nd preload right in. At face value then it would appear to be working.

OK it seems I'm certifiable. No collar near the top of the shock near the preload adjuster. Also I can't see collar near the bottom of the shock. The spring compression tool that KTMTwins (http://www.ktmtwins.com/950adventure/tssc-01.html)sell might explain everything. Pic below shows that there is a spring compressor which may be used to enable a slip on collar near the base of the shock to be removed allowing removal of the spring i.e. only preload adjustment available is in the hydraulic preload adjustor. Funny thing is this pic shows the spring being compressed against the bottom of the shock so is there a slip on collar near the top of the shock. Damn it does anybody have a manual for the KTM 950 shock. I have a manual for the 5018 PDS shock but I think this is a the shock the EXC's use.
http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/yhst-52373271332629_2095_12595983
So this just leaves checking that the shock has been put together properly or finding out what spring JMJ has. KTM twins indicate on this page (http://www.ktmtwins.com/950adventure/spss62225-130.html) that the stock spring on the non S models is (05 to 07) is 150n where as the S model (05 to 07) is 140n and they offer a 130n spring.

Mine has a 140n spring fitted. My bike is also an '04 which that spring apparently doesn't fit. The earlier bikes have longer shocks/springs than the later ones.
The other thing is, jumping up and down on the bike in the garage I couldn't notice any difference between preload fully in and fully out.

Funny thing is this pic shows the spring being compressed against the bottom of the shock so is there a slip on collar near the top of the shock.Shock is inverted while using tool...
Here's my 640 shock (non-PDS) inverted with poor-man's spring compressors:

when i brought my 9fidy it came with a yucky cut down screen.
i was lucky enough to find a factory screen in NZ,,
so, with the CCA on this weekend and im going to try my luck and not fall off, i wasnt to keen to have my good screen on...dont want to damage it.
so i went down to the glass shop and picket up a free off cut or clear 4mm plastic... set about bending it in to shape with the heat gun and, im quite pleased with the out come..

Can provide photos later on. Its anthracite, not orange.... Pirelli Scorpians, new last year.

Does anyone know the factory sag measurements for the rear shock on a 2004 950? Not a formula but actual measurements.
Or, share your measurements and settings with me even if they aren't factory. Include your weight and year/model of 950/990
cooneyr
13th April 2010, 10:16
From over on the HOW I found this info. Now you just need to figure out what amount of static and dynamic sag is appropriate.
2003-04: 9.0" (230mm) - "S" 10.4" (265mm)
2005-06: 8.3" (210mm) - "S" 9.65" (245mm)
2007-08: 8.3" (210mm) - "S" 10.4" (265mm)
One of the posts (http://www.ktm950.info/how/suspension/siddall/siddall.html)on the HOW mentions 5 to 10% for static sag and 25 to 33% for race sag. Its worth having a read of this post and some of the others over there.
Personally my settings are factory sport for the forks. factory normal for shock compression and about 30% less than factory normal for other shock settings. Front is still blows though a little easy in compression and yet slightly harsh on small square edge bumps. Back end behaves well except for under brakes but I suspect that me and rear brakes not being as sensitive as I'm use too. S model has softer shock spring than non S and I suspect my suspension could well do with basic maintenance i.e. oil and gas.

Your bike should have it as standard as it was a factory fitted part on '05 bikes on, but our 04's didn't get it. It's a plastic triangle that clips onto the underside of the frame right behind the steering stem. If you look from underneath then up above the radiator it fills the triangular section of frame from the steering stem back to the radiator. I got one too but forgot to include in in my pic.

Got a query re tyres for the 990 there fella's. Stock size is 150/70/ 18 . So I understand a 140 will fit ok. How will this change handling etc etc with the bike. Am bit of a noob with this stuff. I prefer to wear the bloody tyres out instead.

Unless you are used to acute lean angles you most likely will not notice any change in performance using a 140 over a 150 tire on the 990. The stock scorps (150/70/18) are a good tire but if you want more aggressive off road you will see KTM reccomend the TKC 80 which is a 140 road legal knobby.
There is not a huge choice of tire for the 18" rim and even less if you are looking for 150 width, but most folks are happy enough with the 140...although you can get a 150 TKC 80 but it is a bit pricey!!

Correct pressure (which was waaay higher than I expected) is very important with TKC's.
At low pressure my 950 is very efficient at making TKC's vanish.

My battery has been dying over the past couple of weeks. Wouldnt start the bike couple of weeks ago so gave it a charge. Worked well till this morning when it struggled but managed to crank it in the cold(ish) this morning. No load voltage reading OK (12.7v +). Bit of reading reveals that battery can sulphate and give OK voltage but not enough current for starting. Yuasa YTZ14S (OEM) is $500 at last report. Bit of searching revealed MotoBatt (http://www.motobatt.com/) brand which is imported by Whites. They produce a MBTX9U which is a replacement for the YTZ14S (same technology - AGM and VRLA). CCA is a bit lower but at $99NZ though it was worth a shot. Made the decision at lunchtime, bought on way home from work (local store had one in stock) and fitted when home. Cranks bike over faster than YTZ ever did.
This may end up being a waste of money or I may be laughing all the way to the bank. Only time will tell. Gonna get a hammering over winter. Lots of cold starts and short runs for getting to work.

Get a Remac battery stabiliser or similar. Flat batteries will be a thing of the past and replacing batteries will also not be needed again. So, before I look into rebuilding my shock to suit me...here's my best sales speil
Any of you guys tall manly men that find the standard 950 Adventure shock too soft/short for you? keen for a swap for a freshly rebuilt shock?
As some of you may have seen on other threads my shock has been rebuilt in the past with different valving and is now more suitable for a manly 6ft 120kg or more stud than a 5'9" 90kg weakling, it's fantastically firm on the road but my meagre weight isn't enough for it off road.
Since i've had the bike the shock has had the entire lower mount and internals including damping adjuster and bearing replaced with new parts, regassed and reassembled with receipt for just over $1100 to prove.
My understanding is the 04 shocks are taller than later models, e.g post 05.5. Mine has the 140-255 spring fitted if thats any guide. With the re worked valving the bike does sit quite tall.
Anyone interested in a swap PM me, I'll pay any shipping involved both ways.

I parked it on what I thought was firm dirt only to find on returning to it that it had dirt on the left pillion peg etc and the clutch lever was a bit bent on the end (twisted the hand guard I think - I don't have it too tight). It had obviously fallen over. Someone had lifted it back up for me but I wondered if that same someone thought they'd have a wee sit on it before it sank into the ground... I'm guessing ~$130 for a new lever?? Yeah, I hear you all saying put something under your side stand, it's cheaper. I've known it for years but I didn't do it on this occassion.

The spring is standard and is not the issue, and I've already looked down that route and can't seem to source a spring.

You Know your a 9XX owner when . . .
You pin the throttle and the front wheel doesnt come up, the rear wheel goes down.
you know you're a 950 owner when, you change rear tires more often than the oil.
...you are riding on a dirt frontage road and are passing motorcycles riding on the interstate.
...your only worry on a teeth-rattling, sweaty, rocky, slippery and rutted off-camber trail is whether the temp gauge will stay below 7 bars.
You have small giggle to yourself each time you ride your bike.
You hear the words "How did you get that big thing in here?"
You're the only rider in town to upgrade your bike to a more restrictive 2 into 1 exhaust.
You add bar risers so you can ride your streetbike standing up more comfortably.

You maybe interested in this idea that came from AV riders for under seat storage tray for KTM 950-990's. Some of us have had a units made and fitted them to our bikes, they are real easy to install and give you some handy storage under the seat. Takes around just 30min to install.
they are made from 1.5mm stainless steel so are strong and rust proof. Cost are $180 each couriered to any location in NZ. For more info email gc.sargent@xtra.co.nz

Got a quick query about Chain and sprockets for you regarding my 990 Adventure. About how much km's have your chain and sprocket lasted.Almost done 35000km and having to adjust the chain more regularly now. Been away on a big mission with the Mrs. Bike loaded to the hilt. the chain was beginning to loosen again pretty quickly. I assume this means the chain is at the end of its life. Or could I just take out a link? If I did this would it last much longer? Any feedback much appreciated.
Cheers Dion
Once they are at the end of their life they stretch every ride, at the end I went for a ride after adjusting my chain only in the middle of nowhere to have it slapping away and had to adjust it before I carried on, removing a link wouldnt buy you much time as its still stretching and just increasing the risk of breaking teeth off the sprockets, just pony up the hundreds of dollars and get a new x-ring and sprockets and not have to worry about it again,
Gravel Man
17th June 2010, 20:43
Around 30000km seems about right. I know of a 950 & a 990 that had to replace chain & sprockets at aprox the same km.

i ran out of adjustment in kaikoura. we had to meet the ferry that day, just keep riding it hoping like hell it didn't brake.
when i got back to masterton that night,
all the tips of the teeth on the rear sprocket where broken off, chain had warn a grove in the chain guard also..
so forked out the $500 odd bucks for new chain and sprocket set,, i was lucky to get away with it..

There is two 4.9 mm pop rivets at the front edge to be drilled into the frame the are not shown in this photo, but check out the attached installation sheet it tells you how to install the tray
warewolf
18th June 2010, 09:42
under seat storage trayMy first thought - being someone who uses all the suspension travel on the 640A - is that the tray looks like it encroaches on the rear wheel travel. Look at the way the forward guard and the cross-brace are both relieved, presumably to allow clearance to the tyre.
redleader
18th June 2010, 10:53
So far clearance has not been a problem on the 950 and 990's even two up on challenging tracks, haven't had the wheel hit the tray.
the guys in the US who come up with the idea and have fitted them don't seem to report any issues.
But a way to check would be to put a bit string under the seat across the bottom edge of the sub frame members and go for a balls out ride and see if your tyre has ripped the string off as that would mean your tyre would have touched the bottom of the tray.

Another other option which I might look at when I pull my shock in the next few weeks is to jack up the swingarm without the shock fitted and see if it will even move that far up.
warewolf
18th June 2010, 11:37
Do it with a fresh knobby on.. they can be significantly taller than part-worn adventure tyres.
If you have ABS on your 990 its look a good way to get some more storage but on the 950 I wouldn't think you would need anymore as I can get a shed load of stuff in the underseat area.

Replaced the oil and put 0.54kg/mm springs from Slavens Racing (http://www.slavensracing.com/). Found that the rebound needle was stuck in one fork so freed that up. Been round the block so far and WOW what a difference. Looking forward to going for a decent ride.
Don't be afraid to change the fork oil yourself. Also pretty damn easy to check the rest of the fork internals and the forks are installed in the tripple clamps properly while you are at it. Only need two "special" tools being a slighter thinner than normal 22mm spanner and a pin wrench to take the fork cap off. I welded up a pin wrench but Sulco sell one for $25 (http://www.sulco.co.nz/Product?Action=View&Product_id=2821). Double check that pin diameter is 4mm but I'm pretty sure it is.

Under seat storage KTM 950 & 990
I pulled my shock tonight, going to get another 10psi of nitrogen sucked out of it. While there I had a look at clearance between the rear wheel and subframe to see how much underseat storage could be fitted in there. By my calculations if I bottomed my shock (04 Adventure, same height as later S's) then the fully compressed shock length would be 30cm, eyelet centre to eyelet centre.
I have a 1/3 worn E-07 fitted and on my bike it sits about 5mm below the frame rails at full compression, so with a new tyre anything lower than the bottom edge of the subframe rails would be at risk of contacting the tyre.
It's lucky I'm such a blouse rider that thats never likely to happen.

LC8's will eat cheap chains and sprockets so stick with the good brand X-Ring chains and quality sprockets, I put a DID on mine but you won't get anything cheap thats for sure, JT Sprockets and DID chain cost a shit load but you know they will last.
