:woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo:

Mate, nothing like children.....they change your whole outlook. Go well. Enjoy.

When my first daughter was born my eldest sister said to me "make the most of it, she'll be leaving home before you know it."

Never a truer word spoken.

I was there for the birth of both my daughters (now 19 and 17) and when I look at them now, thinking I used to wipe their bums thankful for all the fingers and toes, I just know that all the sleepless nights, empty bank accounts and missed parties were all worth it.

Every minute, every cent and every little mess.

You think you're in love now? Oh boy...........just wait.

Well said. Keep your act together and the rush is like nothing else.

The first time I rode in a group (back in the 70's) I thought all hell had broken loose, but fuck, what a buzz. You can smoke pot, drink piss, pop pills, shoot smack, smoke P, snort coke or fuck the missus (if you're bored) but riding with 300-odd Harleys just pops ya socks.

If you're gonna go non-denominational then 300 can reach into the thousands and 'incomprehensional' works its way into the vocabulary.

ACC, fuck 'em.

Yeah was bricking myself before I left the house, then when I got to the start I was like "what the fuck am I getting in to!" then.... I met a few cool people, made me feel at ease (sp?), I had a nice loud harley on my tail and it was all on after that. LOVED IT! Will deffo do it again.

Thanks to all for making it a great first group ride for me!!

What an awesome day !!
Bikes converging from all directions to gather at the Silverdale autobahn, no idea how many. Maha got up and like a pro briefed all on the direction and discipline of the ride. By the time we had turned around at the Silverdale junction the size of what we were putting on hit us………….it must have been close on to a kilometre of motorcycles, all shapes and sizes from 250’s, scooters, Harleys, race reps, cruisers, trikes, even a few of the mighty GSX1400’s! :innocent:

The ride was difficult to manage, at the front we thought the varying speeds we were doing would give the pack the opportunity to ‘bunch up’ at each lane change, off ramp or intersection. It was obvious this wasn’t happening on the southern motorway turn point, I saw some poor bugger on a scooter flat tack waving at us to slow down, plus others. 50-55k was maintained all the way back into the city to assist all to ‘catch up’ (big lesson for all ‘huge group rides’ is to crawl for a few k’s after a change in direction).

At the domain, what an awesome sight! Bikes kept coming; they kept coming for over 30 mins!! Over 350+ bikes parked everywhere!! The poor flag gaffer taped to the back of my bike looked very second hand after 130k’s strapped to a very kindly donated crutch! (Which was hastily returned to its owner so she could make it to the speeches) thanks mate :niceone:

The heart kids were so stoked with the teddy bears that were donated; I was a little choked handing over mine.

Mom, Maha, Les, Phil Goff and the Green Mp (sorry dude forgot your name for the moment) spoke of our plight and did so to great effect.

Thanks have to go to Mom, Maha, Mully, Gremlin, Miss.L, PhantasmNZ and of course my flag bearer Dean (pillion) for an awesome job today.

Apparently my back has been made famous by TV1 (not checked it out yet) so I shall be selling my Hi-Viz vest on Trade Me with a reserve price, that is yet unheard of, for safety gear and it’s undoubted sought after desirability.

Thanks to all that attended for an awesome turn out and a prelude to what will happen in Wellington next week.

Photos taken from the Sunset Road overbridge are now posted Here (http://s891.photobucket.com/albums/ac119/AKACCRide/)

Working thru all the pics I came up with a figure of 331 bikes.
I posted up pretty much everything I took, so there a few shots with the same bikes in them, but it looks pretty cool as a slide show.

If anyone wants the raw pics (ie full size, or cropped in shots), PM me with the pic number and I will see what I can do for you

Been my first group ride and I really enjoyed it, although towards the end my arse did feel more like a rock than a comfortable seating device :spanking:

Who's got pictures or videos up on the net? Perhaps we could have a central repository on KB for them?

And if ACC are not willing to budge, in the words of someone at the domain today we should close down the bridge for a day :innocent:

[QUOTE=GOONR;1129514220].... I reckon that most of the car's would have enjoyed watching all the bikes go by. ...QUOTE]

I think that there was a nose-to-tail on the Southern just at Papakura. As we rode back up, heading north, I thought that the cars travelling south were banking up fast and I thought "we did that". Afterwards when I returned home, on the same stretch of motorway, there was sand covering oil so I guess some cager was so busy rubber-necking at us and didn't see the slow traffic ahead.

The guy in front was turned round looking over his shoulder, and must have lifted off the gas. The following car was way too close anyway, locked up and slid straight into him, full frontal rearrangement, ouch!. (fast lane, heading south) It was just after you had all past, I was playing catchup, could see it all unfolding, and could do nothing about it. It did make me very conscious of how much following distance to hold on the cars ahead, and how scary it was with cars sitting right behind me, as the traffic flow started to surge the closer we got to town.

There were nearly several when we were Southbound - every second car ended up on the hard shoulder just before the offramp.

Having skimmed all these ACC threads I must say that I'm really (truly) surprised at how many kb'ers have not ridden in large groups before. Don't you go on poker runs? Don't you go on rallies? WTF?

I ride in groups of dozens or more regularly and hundreds occasionally. You pick your spot and stick to it. How hard can it be?

However, good on everyone for taking part and I hope that the experiences of late will make the next group ride more comfortable. There's nothing like being part of a big bunch, it's an adrenaline rush, no alcohol (etc) required.

FCKACC

Easy, Peasea :). Yep it was the first big group ride for many including me. (Actually I've ridden in much bigger rides on treadlies but the same principles apply as far as I can tell - hold your line, be smooth & don't fkn panic). Main thing: we were there and we'll be back.

Cheers - Chasio

Hey Mully,

We met the couple on the boulevard (the guy in black leathers and his partner in pink) from your photo. Didn't get their names tho. The lad on the red gixxer in that photo is my boy EnzoYug, and the gal on the lil' VTR behind him is me!

I was trying to do a bit of a head count at the Wellesley st lights as the bikes were coming through. Gave up at around 300 and could still see the line the lenght of the Wellesley st off ramp.
The video that BD put up shows us crossing the bridge, what an awesome sight that must have been, pretty much the view I was getting at 'light contol' towards the end..:niceone:

You were a part of the biggest protest ride Auckland has seen in a number of years yesterday.

Heres what I said at the end of the ride......

''We have kept this rediculous ACC Levy issue in the public eye.

We wont let go
We wont just roll over and say ''ah fuck it, its all good''.

Any increase in the ACC levy part of the (motor vehicle registration) should be fair and just for all those that (who at anytime) may need ACC cover.

To simply lay blame and target bikers is just not acceptable.

And to the many non-biker people I have spoken to over the last few weeks about it, they all feel our plight is totally justified.

We are all voters right?

We are the minority of road users so I guess, in the Governments eyes, we are the Easy Target.
Well, the Easy Target is here for the duration and beyond.

And to combine this ride with Heart Children is just an added bonus''.

Tuesday will be massive, I for one are really looking forward seeing the news coverage tuesday night.

Hmmmm, would be nice to think we will get decent coverage, but not so sure.
Wife just brought home Sunday Star rag. Yesterdays protest rated a few lines, no photos, on page 2. Most of it about the fact that someone had binned.
In the same edition the Killer wasps or bees or flys (whatever they call themselves) received a full 2 page advertorial, bloody good for recruiting.
Looks like if we want decent print coverage we are going to have to wear silly bandannas and mimic the yanks. Big ups to da Star bro..Da Gang Star..Yo!!!!
Or we could just up the anti....
Anyone for a nude ride through the CBD?

V2Girl
15th November 2009, 10:49
Agreed, apart from the 'Big Ups". Not from the Bronx, or 16 years old so am only assuming you mean 'Well Done".
I think, if and when we need to, we can close down the big centers at any time we wish, we just hope we don't need to go that far.
Wondering how the guy who binned is feeling now? I know how I would feel.
He at least came out to support the campaign and so deserves some credit. Lets look after our own. How about a get well soon card, with a small "don't do it again" message tucked away in the bottom corner?
Cmon, we're only human (Nick Smith exempt).
I was as pissed as the next person when I saw the guy on the tarmac, but it could be turned into a positive if we could find out his riding history and discover he has not done any rider training or had a lot of experience on NZ roads. Not only would his tyres have been cold but they looked new as well.
It's exactly what we are pushing for in our campaign - spend the money on accident prevention and comprehensive rider training courses.

Thanks to Gremlin for getting us the Motorway at Wellesley st
no problem... I didn't repeat my effort on the cheesecutter ride, going past Titoki St

I stopped at the right turn into the Museum grounds, as we didn't have anyone pointing into Titoki St and got down to counting. Counted over 270 bikes, then I also went looking and found a few more stragglers, which would have edged it closer to 300, and this was only for those entering via that route (I know others took different routes).

One of the most important things for riders on the route to do, is to maintain your distance the bike in front, and try to do it smoothly. We were aware of the elastic band effect, and deliberately accelerated slowly out of roundabouts etc, but the effect was still large (although it sounds like bikes stopped at the NW roundabout, which explains a lot).

Hmm.. yeh.. careful with that route - me an a few mates got pinged around there a couple-a-years back with a mufti and a marked car - and some cops with a mojor attitude problem...

Took all my diplomacy skills not to get all 4 bikes not impounded through an over-liberal interpretation of the boy racer act by said plod :Police::nono:

Hmm yes - it was a little hairy round there today after the rain... On the way to Ixion's NZ Herald photoshoot - had a car behind me thinking "if this is the bloody photographer, and this goes wrong - I'll be fcked!"

Crawled around those bends at about 10-15kph!

turns out it wasn't the press - but makes you think - there were a bunch of us went past there today - in the wet, oil making it slippery as foook ... and yet still nobody else managed to bin it...

Dropping in behind you and signalling this tosspot to fall back, then slowing him away from you guys just had to be done.
I think he got the message.

That was Lars with Mom on the back! Just as well you 'rescued' them or the day would have been a whole different event!

That, ummm, bike thing, we were on did not allow for pillion rear view :pinch:

I did not feel threatened at all. We did not have panniers though, I had my trusty tank bag as a back pack and was holding Lars' tail pack on my lap.

It just looked like you had panniers because of the weird rear end on that thing (the bike thing, not Lars)

Thanks to the organisers for all their hard work. Hope the pollies sit up and take notice. I had the rug pulled from under me on the Wellington trip (work) so I hope you guys stick it to them.

A good day out catching up with some familiar faces and riding with my Dad which does not happen so much these days. All good.

Cheers - but I haven't done anything thankworthy.

I'm pleased BRONZ has proved a viable rallying point for a lot of motorcyclists.
I hark back to the debates with Lou G all those years ago and while not all agree with the policies decided, even within BRONZ, the meetings have been impeccably run and admirably democratic. All anybody could ask.

People I would acknowledge for where it is now:
Finn Neilsen. President of BRONZ National. It probably exists currently because of him. We all owe the man a beer.
Forbes & Davies - wholesalers - Where he works. Shot! F&D.
Peggy - BRONZ Treasurer. A Treasure. Thank you Peggy.
Ixion - who I was going to say I shoved forward when nobody wanted the job - but the truth is I hid behind him. Shot! Ix.
BRONZ Committee - Rest of the people who turned up for the meetings. Respec.
Pete McPhee - Publisher Kiwi Rider - Gives BRONZ a page in KR every month. Donates it.
The respected Journo who ghost writes the column also donates her time.
Otago members - kept it financial.
Klingon - for top form.

Bastards => Good.

I am very disappointed. Really. Maha and his band of wonderful helpers managed to get in excess of 300 bikes safely through the Auckland Motorway system this morning without incident. Full credit to them all. Some of us have put an enormous amount of time and effort into planning and executing this ride today.

For one person to not be able to control the "wrist twist" down a very narrow, winding road, speed signed 30kph I might add, on cold tyres AFTER the event is over and end up in an ambo on his way to hospital is inexcusable! As a result he has potentially undermined all the friggen work that went into making this thing so good, AND damaged our protest in the process. How the hell do I stand up now and shout out how unfair this is!

Got to go now, I am apparently more than disappointed!

One more thing! Any of you heading to Wellington, take this as a fucking lesson!

This is a late reply to this thread as I have only just read it...I was proud to be associated with the bike community...bikers for bikers...that is until I read this and some of the other responses in this thread, ...never thinking that in actual fact there are those in this community as small minded and self absorbed as everybody else. To read this reaction to this accident especially coming from someone who is supposed to represent us...represent me...is more than disappointing. If you dont know the rider, the circumstances how it happened, how can you make such random comments? Do you think he did it on purpose...do you not think he feels bad...We are supposed to support each other not put in the boot...You obviously have no concern for how this guy will feel when he does come out of hospital and reads this thread. I am sure there are others that might agree with your comments which would disapoint me even more...He was there to support you and the cause on this ride otherwise he would not have been there to have the accident...would be nice if you could offer some support to him rather than sticking it...

Well... becuase the best part of 500 bikes made it along that road - some of them twice - in dry conditions with a heightnened awareness that we were there to protest that we weren't a drain on the country and the ACC. This was one of the 33% of accidents where the biker WAS at fault, and apart from challenging conditions (windy, off-camber, road) there were no other environmental factors (dry road, no gravel, oil, coolant (unlike when i and others rode up there in the wet through the newly spilled oil/coolant/sand the next day), no sunstrrike and no u-turning drivers)

Fact was, this rider pushed outside his limits and lost. Ok, happens to the best of us - but a little thought about why we were there should have seen everyone keeping safety at front of mind.

Don't get me wrong, I have every sympathy for this rider - as I'm sure others here do too - but in the end I agree with Mom's sentiment (if not quite as directly.

Welcome to KB.

Close to 600 replies in this thread and only a very small percentage on what happened after the gathering was over, 97% of the thread is positive. Even you logged on to focus on the negative. Yes welcome to KB, around here most people just say it how they see it, others of course are trolls and are only here to muck up other peoples lives.
Unfortunately, a huge amount of time and effort went into this ride.Mom and Maha in particular did huge amounts of work to make the event happen.
Yes they had help, but it was their baby.
Mom is as passionate about this issue as any of us here and as somoene who stood up and was counted and organised a bloody brilliant protest ride, I reckon if anyone has a right to be disappointed by the "wrist twist" of the only rider to become a casualty, IT IS HER!
When I see you have organised a protest ride or at least are attending them regularly I'll give you some credit, but for now as Maha has said.

Welcome to KB, I hope this will not be your one and only post.

I think you might be surprised at how much prevention is caused by what our peers will think of us if we stuff up.

The person mentioned is well aware of what he has done!!!

Of the 52500 Kms traveled that day and only one broken leg and a few bruises, not sure about the other incedent I think we need to pat ourselves on the back no matter what the press say,

don't let them divide us!!!

I have just picked up this thread again although I had been following the thread closely right up to the protest ride.

Thank you Mom and Maha for your dedication to the cause. I have never participated in a protest, let alone be part of a protest ride. I feel as strongly as you about this issue. The only difference is that Mom and Maha galvanised me into taking some action. It was a fantastic ride. Organisers and helpers should feel very proud of themselves.

This is my first day out of hospital. Yes I am the culprit.

One of first things I have done since getting home (the other thing being learning how to use the toilet in a wheelchair) is to register on KB so that I can make the most public apology I have ever made. As the tears well up in my eyes, to Mom and Maha I am so, so, sorry to have stuffed up all your great work. To the KB community I am sorry to make the cause that much harder to fight for. When I went down, after my brain lapse which Mom describes as “wrist-twist”, all I could think of was the negative media this would end up attracting, then my bike, then my injuries.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who stopped to help me in the early stages of the greatest ordeal of my life so far. I cannot remember all of you, the kindest lady who laid my head in her lap, fellow bikers and passersby who controlled traffic and moved my bike out of the way. All I could see were many reassuring faces and reassuring voices. I felt stupid but safe. More tears… thank you so much.

To those like Mom, who have inferred that I am a F..ing idiot without saying so, I agree with you. There is no need for anyone to come to my defence. I should know a lot better. If I had another unbroken leg I would invite you break it as another reminder lest I forget.

I agree with sentiments expressed about the need to focus on professional rider training. Anything that will help an individual to both recognise and remind them of their limits.

For what it is worth and to satisfy the curiosity out there, I started riding bikes again, after 30 years out of the saddle, in late 2006. After I brought my first bike (against my wife's wishes), a Bandit 650 I went on the BRONZ Ride Right, Ride Safe course at Whenuapai. I found it very useful. I did 12,000 km on the Bandit before deciding to go on to GSXR750 earlier this year (again, against my wife's concerns). Up until the other day I had done 7,000 km on the GSXR. Most of my riding has been with a group of friends around the Waikato, Coromandel, Bay of Plenty, SH16 and the Auckland -Whangarei - Dargaville triangle. I usually ride TEC. Tour of the Mainland was in my sights. Not now (one less to tarnish the name of responsible bikers). Hope this gives you some insight into my psychy.

This is my first and last post. I will miss riding.

Again, I am SORRY for stuffing things up AND for such a long post.

Tis a pity its you first and last post though. The whole day was a success in the eyes of many, to have someone chuck a bike on the ground afterwards did put a slight damper on things for a day or two I wont deny that. But the positives on the day outweighed the negitive most will agree on that.

That Took Balls (passes ya a Speights). Good On Ya Mate. I wish Everyone showed as much Balls as you did, and owned their own shit. too many are ready to blame someone else for their shit.
Yer ya fucked up. Yer the Media maded mince meat out of it. Yer ya accident fu*ked off a few of us on here. For me it was TV3 that really fucked me off how they haddled it, not you. Ya fronted up and own it. Makes ya a bigger man than most I have riden with on here.
Don't for fu*k sakes give up riding because of this one little hic-up (And I mean little, I nurse as a bones/orthopaedic nurse so I mean that). Ya will need ta get back on the "Horse" so that the fear doesn't rule ya.
Don't stop posting here ether, because you have so much to teach others here. There are so many here I have riden with that are only lucky that they haven't had the same thing happen to them. Some are luck they haven't have worse.
Learn and grow. Let this make ya stronger and wiser, but don't let it bet ya into a life less lively.

Seeing as I was the one that dished out the biggest serve, I should also give this member a huge hunk of Mom KUDOS too!

I am with klingon here, it is not often that I am surprised by posts on here in a good way, but this one has managed to do exactly that. FotH, you are a rare individual, I would love to shake your hand one day.

I hope your recovery is uncomplicated and you will reconsider getting back on two wheels again. Be a shame to lose such a "big man" over something that can rightly be explained as a shit happened moment.

Thank you for your post too, that take balls!

This is my first and last post. I will miss riding.

Mate, I hope not!

I am also a person that had a long time out of the saddle, and I also, not long after I joined up here, did a similar thing, binned in front of heaps of people on a group ride. (granted, not as many people, and not such a big ride, but any how)

But I too fronted up, here and in person to the trucky I scared the shit out of, and I know how hard it is.

BUT

Learn from the lesson, get back on the bike (obviously not right now), and come play in the forum pen! Fronting up is good, but it's only part of it, you gotta take the learn.

Remember, we are not protesting against ACC per se, it is the way it is getting shafted we have the issue with. Mistakes happen, accidents happen, that is why ACC needs to stay pure, and why you need to help us keep it that way.

What happened to you had no impact on the protest IMHO, it reinforced we need and respect ACC, we just don't want it fucked with.

So please do come back, change your name though, you cant go round for ever with that handle.

That's enough from me.

On ya dude for fronting up! and
Get well soon.

Well done FoolOnTheHill, it takes a real man to stand up and put his hand up.
It also takes a real man to not give up, get back on the bike and continue doing what he loves most ( after his wife of course).

Please post again as you will have plenty to share, and heaps more to exprience.

Nobody has an accident on purpose - despite Nick Smith trying to convince joe public that the only reason we ride bikes is so that we can fall off and cost the taxpayer lots of money - which is why ACC is such an excellent idea, and worth fighting for.

I was there, despite being a communter mainly, and unskilled in the way of the "group ride", and it was great to be part of it (maximum kudos to Mom, Maha and everyone else involved). It wouldn't have been the same without you, or anyone else who was there.

Don't feel so bad - I hope you're reading all these positive posts, and it aids in the healing process.

You even inspired me to post something...

To FOTH,

I am also one who has returned to the wonderful world of motorcycling after a 30 year break. Went from a 250 Suzuki Trail bike to a GL1500 Goldwing.

30 years ago the "family' I rode with have remained friends for life.

Today I am able to still ride with some of them But have increased the size of my family.

Yesterday I thought I was bullet proof. Today I Know that I have matured but their is still that little bit of cowboy in me. I have had to stop several times and remind myself that I have a wife, kids and grand kids that rely on me to be around. If nothing more than to be the one to poke a stick at.

Your posting here today shows your maturity. You only made an error of judgement and several were quick to be very judgemental of you.

Yet you came up on the forum, held your hand up and took ownership. You in my opinion are a person of the highest integrity.

You have every right to say sorry, but dont you dear think that you have bought your family in to any form of disrepute.

You have praised the efforts of MOM and Maha for the work they have put into this campaign ( and most deserved it is). Equally you deserve the highest praise for being there on the day in support.

Look closely at the replies posted after yours. You have humbled your greatest critics. You have also awakened the minds of a lot of others and have put a very clear message that perhaps we all need to take a deep breath and reflect on all the times we have cocked it up, But never had your courage to admit to our faults.

I do not believe that you will quit over this, You are to big of a person to do so. I also don't believe that you want to give up your "family" having just rediscovered them again.

Please use your maturity to help guide those of us less mature than yourself.

When I am next in your neck of the woods, I for one would want to shake your hand.

If you are ever down in Wellington, please PM me and I will open my door to you.

I have ridden many km's with this biker and have found him to be a very safe & conciencious rider. It was a very unfortunate accident BUT thats what it was. It was an Accident!
No-one drops his pride & joy intentionally.
This good friend of mine is really suffering both physically & mentally now.
Regards & best wishes.

I am saddened to hear this. Are his injuries healing OK?

The mind can/will take a little longer perhaps.

If he is coming down this way at all, please PM Me and I will shout him a room at the inn.

He needs to know he is not alone and get him to read some of the replies here.

Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

(wanted a safe ride home, didnt get it. Put it down to experience and know I wont make that mistake again.)

Tell him Maha says ''Bikes can be replaced, people cannot and even though it maybe six weeks before the first steps are taken, I kinda hope he will take the time to post on here when he is fit and ready. Be good to have a clear level head around here at times''.
