Hi All
I've recently got involved with my local club waving the flags on the start finish line at race meetings. I know there are a whole heap of girlie bikers that do the same.
My questions are - how many of you suffer lower back pain after standing on the concrete all day and how can you avoid it and what do you do to remedy it?
Gotta say even two days after the even my back is still aching!!!!!

In a nutshell--BETTER SHOES. Also keep the wind off your lower back

Get some orthapedic sneakers from athletes foot or a store like that. I got a pair for work and have never had any sore feet again, absolutely brill and have excellent venting so your feet wont get hot and sweaty etc.

Magnesium chloride, Google it and read "Ancient minerals"! (works for me)

This ain't nothing to do with being a girl - but something that affects everyone ... personally I take quite strong painkillers (Voltarin - prescribed not those weak ones from the pharmacy) for pain which is made worse by standing for long periods on concrete.

Do you take them before the standing as well as after? Sort of like after a night on the booze you take a berroca and two panodol before you go to sleep to avoid the hangover.

Also stand one foot ahead of the other rather than side by side. It reduces the load on your spine.

Take a course of sex, usually works for me.
Repeat till ya can't feel the pain anymore.

A decent pair of insoles in your shoes can be helpful, too.
I used them when I was engineering... standing on concrete floors all day

Go for a walk between races too...perhaps a run (out on to the track to pick up a dropped bike is probably not recommended though, if you have back trouble)

Carry a little piece of carpet preferably with the underlay attached to it to stand on.

if you are stuck in one spot thats a bloody good idea.:woohoo:
I must emphasise my point about keeping your back warm though. The start/finish line is a windy hole even on a nice day let alone on a cold/wwet overcast day.
Bike boots/shoes just aint the thing to wear for standing around.

No don't go see those monkeys at athlete's foot. Go to one podiatrists and physios recommend - shoe science etc.
Pilates and other core exercises like kiwifruit mentioned will pay dividends. At the least doing the plank few minutes a day will probably go a long way too

Back strength too, do some deadlifts. I can now lift the weight of my bike as a working rep *and* my lower back pain is gone! Good all round!

I find remembering to bend my knees helps. Standing with locked knees for hours on end seems to kill my lower back.

I don't drink so having to avoid a hangover to me is a waste of time ... with the drugs though I take during and after ... no need for those before as there is no inflammation to treat. But a good pair of shoes and socks work wonders too.

your abdominal muscles are weak
Pendlay rows and deadlifts (without belt) will help

Either that or cause a hernia ... - I would wear a belt.

Take a chair to sit between races.

Training without a belt strengthens your abs (stabilizing muscles)... with high reps and correct form she/he will be fine
Unless youre maxing out (1 rep), i would never recommend a belt.

+1 on the insoles. I got some from the Athletes foot to go inside my work shoes. I wear protector safety brogues and they weren't too comfortable before adding the insoles but I needed oil proof soles and such.

+1 with the orthotic insoles solution.
Check this page and the shoe pages on this site (http://www.solemate.co.nz/newzealand/foot-leg-products.html).
Not a product or brand recommendation... (see a podiatrist or physio for recommendations) but just a heads-up as to the kind of products out there that may help. If you find stuff with a moneyback guarantee, all the better. :)
Good luck.
Andy.

Whenever I've done flag marshalling I take one of those foam mats (you know the sleeping rolls from Payless Plastics etc) and stand on one of those folded up - it cushions the knees and helps the back as well. Also do some good stretches every now and again - not only will it keep you moving freely it also gets the boys hearts racing when you're at the start finish.....lol :bleh::bleh:
Have fun always....glad you are part of the sport....keep up the great work.

I get lower back pain from standing around, got worse & worse, went to choirpractor, had xrays etc, ended up being my pelvis rotated & tilted (not from chillie bin racing but close!)
In the process of getting fixed up, not cheap but oh the relief.
Got to treat the cause & not the symptons.
