On this trip, Boulder Stream, Leatham, The Branch and the 5 huts were all logged and put up on the website. With the iffy weather the plan is to do Raglan Range and other surrounding high altitude tracks on a clear blue sky day, the views from up Raglan are something else

I like the one-flick and it's on, and they're smaller in frontal area so you can tuck them into smaller corners, a bit less likely to get smeared by a gorse bush.

Meh, by the time it's a problem the new one's will be half the size and twice the resolution. Probably are already.

The Johnstones Creek Track and Mt Buster Track are a couple of my all time favourites, I try to do them a minimum of a couple of times a year so I envy you having them close by as a backyard tracks

Cant say without riding it, most of the similar stuff on roadbikes have various settings.
I remember when ABS first came out on cars and everyone thought it was only for people who couldn't drive properly.
But look at where it is now with the evolution to EBC systems (way better than standalone antilock) that sense in microseconds how fast your hitting the brake and know if it needs to ramp up to full emergency braking straight away, taking the brake calipers there that critical 1/4 or 1/2 second faster than what your foot would have done.
Could be a trap for the unwary though, these electronic systems still have flaws, but that story is for another day...

Looks like chain drive, both front and rear. Sprockets on the wheel are very hard to see as they are somewhat camouflaged/similar size to the hub.
Kinda reminds me of the belt drive on a very old (bicycle style) motorcycle.

Not particularly good riding technique if you ask me. they should have slowed down going into the turn then gently opened the throttle up as they went past the apex of the corner so as to keep a more smoother upright cornering.
I'd say from their small bikes they were novices tho so I won't be too picky.

I'm after really cheap (as in chips cheap) tyres so under $100. I've been looking 2nd hand. Most of the 18 inch that I've seen are all rears. Nordie are you worried about the front being too tall so it hits the front guard?

Another tyre that looks cool is the TKC - I like the look of the knobs lining up across the tyre. Any other suggestions are appreciated. If anyone has any old tyres that could do the job sing out.

I'm after really cheap (as in chips cheap) tyres so under $100. I've been looking 2nd hand. Most of the 18 inch that I've seen are all rears. Nordie are you worried about the front being too tall so it hits the front guard?

Another tyre that looks cool is the TKC - I like the look of the knobs lining up across the tyre. Any other suggestions are appreciated. If anyone has any old tyres that could do the job sing out.

The Mitas 644 18" Rear is fairly narrow and low profile (small OD) tyre with a reasonably classic style knob pattern.

I didn't like the 644 rear as the compound is too soft when fully loaded and taking tarmac corners fast, a little too much walking for my liking. However for what you're looking for it could be a viable option.

I have a few 50% to 70% worn tyres I was going to bang on TM soon to clean out the shed, I think in amongst them I have a near new 644 rear that did only the one trip before I changed it over. I'll have a look tomorrow

Just seen this post. Awesome. Sort of explains why I get just as much out of riding my scooter over roads as I used to get from racing everywhere on the big road bikes. For me nowadays, the ride is about taking in the world around me, not what I see in a 10 degree wide zone in front of the bike, or how fast I can get from point A to B.

I used to ride alone a lot. I carried about 60M of 6mm spectra and a couple of baby double purchase mainsheet blocks. They came in useful exactly once, in pulling my bike out of a creek, from an overhanging tree, dead vertical for about 6M.

The bike was fine, ish, but I had a bit of damage, and there was no way I was walking out of there any time that day.

If it were me I'd have had the clutch and front brake levers covered and had a bloody good go at dumping the bike as the edge loomed.
Was interesting to see how he landed, sat up, passed out, sat up again and had no idea or memory of what happened or where his bike was, or where the road was.

He was extremely lucky. With all that luggage behind him, it would be hard to dismount in a hurry, it all happened really quickly. So that's what parts of the TAT look like. Doesn't say that in the brochure. Might be tempted one day. Interested?
