If you havn't already go along to a local meeting and say hi, have a watch and see what seems to work well. People there will probably be able to help you with local knowledge such as bikes kinda for sale that aren't to be found on tardme.

Wait for the influx of big bored CBR125s and R125s. Might be a while before it becomes a truly economically viable option but will happen eventually.

The GP100 bike looks like it has a 125 engine. GP100 engines were painted black all over, 125's were unpainted with alloy (silver) painted side covers.
If its a 125 then a quick PM to TeeZee will get you some really easy and simple tuning info that makes 18+ RWHP, not much more than skimming the barrel and an RG250 pipe is required.
Or with a little more tuning, ex-porting and RM chamber you would have 20+ rwhp and you could thrash those pesky FXR's at Ruapuna.

Here is a GP125, has a black motor and closes Sunday http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=251401631
Black/Silver, now........ I am becoming unsure if its true, that all GP100 engines were black and 125's unpainted.

Wow I'm impressed with all of your options, cheers. Have looked at 4 of the bikes mentioned that are on Trademe but I spose I'm being a little fussy. Have my eye on an FXR that may need a bit of engine work so will see what happens. I like the machine you have a photo of Gav.

Good engines without bikes are rarer than whole bikes. One sold last weekfor $500 and is going to aussie. What happened to Dawsons old bucket havnt seen that for a while maybe worth chasing up

" It made a funny sound then stopped..." some diagnosis that is.
I suppose you could ask them to see if its got compression, via the kick start.....
if it at least turns over all may not be lost, if its got compression better still.
does the oil light go off when trying to start it? if it does the bottom end may be ok.
good luck.

Yea I saw that engine went to Aussie, probably a few around at the bike wreckers, will wait and see if I need one.

Cheers, will try and win the auction 1st then go from there. Someone asked a more probing question last night and gives a bit more detail on possible fault so sounds promising.

I've added some photos of the FXR in its current state, the engine has done the big end so need to get that sorted and also need to fix and replace a few other things to get it race ready.

Mount Wellington is going a bit FXR cup as well. I guess it's because they are readily available and it's a reasonably well understood and simple build. That was my thinking on it anyway.

fxr150's have changed buckets.....their probualy the best thing that has ever happened to buckets.....they have fast, reliable and cheap, also theres still parts out there for them.
Eventualy when cbr's come down to fxr pricing and fxr's die out then honda cbr's might start getting popular.

Yep FXR's are good, a simple build and an easy competitive way into buckets but there is a good chance a Suzuki GP125 will be heading the pack next year at Mt Welly.
There are six GP's currently running that I know of, three in RS chassis, one in a RG150 chassis and two in their old original GP frames. As its relatively easy to get 20rwhp from them I expect if a good "A" rider gets one they could easily lead the pack on any track.
The down side to FXR's is that they cost a bit to buy and are fragile, you regularly hear of them expensively shitting themselves and I don't expect the CBR's will be any better. While the GP's currently running have proved inexpensive to run and really reliable, and for someone with a few smarts they are an easy build too.
Dad has published the spec's for his 20rwhp bike on page 100 of the Team ESE thread. Its easy to build a quick GP125 that has the legs on any FXR or CBR all it takes is a bit of work and the courage/skill to ride at the front of the pack.

In my case I'm a mid pack B grader at the moment and until I'm the fastest guy out there on an FXR I'm not going to start worrying about ultimate horsepower. At the moment the biggest performance limiting factor is between the riders ears. And to be honest in my case attacking an FXR with a grinder is a more realistic option than getting into porting 2 strokes due to both my mechanical abilities and the time I have available to spend on my hobbis.

I'm right there with ya Henk, I haven't even started racing yet but feel the FXR is the best and easiest way into the sport with something that could be competitive from the start, however like you say, its what's between the ears.:bash:

You're going to love it. I bought an old CB125 single of Tardme to give it a go and raced that for a couple of meets and then started looking for an FXR. Had a huge amount of fun on the old girl but it was just easier getting an FXR and setting that up, the fact that I got mine REAL cheap helped.
No huge mods to mine, wheels, grinder work, stripped starter motor and electrics, body work from Hazzard and a $50 GN carb that I haven't tried yet.
I was racing it a week after I got it with just the headlight ripped out and replaced with duct tape, and all but the carb was done a month after that.
Took both bikes to practice for the AK 2 hour as a workmate was borrowing the old one and went out and had a play on it, to be honest I'm probably just as slow on either but it's just less drama on the FXR. The best mod done so far in my opinion is to fit GSXR 250 wheels and old 125 slicks. Now I just have to ride the damn thing faster, there are a whole bunch of bikes at Mt Welly essentialy the same as mine and most of them make me look like the slow, bald old git that I am.

Lol, yea I'm looking forward to getting on the track but have a few things to sort out first, mainly the engine(big end), fork seals, new chain, and was also recommended to get the 125 slicks. Just doing it gradually so the bank balance doesn't give the wife to much of a fright. Will have to hold off on the GXR wheels for a while I'd say. Sounds like you're being hard on yourself, slow? bald? old git? I'm probably 2 out of the 3 and getting there on the 3rd, lol.

The one I bought had damn near everything wrong with it when I got it. The further in I got, the more I realised that the stuff that wasn't fooked was mising. Never mind, I had got the stage that I was budgeting about 2k for a bike and the whole build hasn't cost me much more than that. Most expensive part was getting the wheels sorted out. I've been lucky to have been in the right place at the right time for both the bike and the bits I've bolted to it. Bought one set of wheels at a wreckers and then another the following week at the track, carb off trade me etc. The one thing I would say is that if something you want comes up grab it. I bought two sets of wheels in as many weeks but haven't seen any since. Carb the same there were a bunch on trade me, I bought the last one I've seen and that needed the diaphragm bogging up with silicone and the inside cleaned up with a brillo pad. Will know this weekend if it works or not.

Yes, it seams the FXR is the best thing to happen to buckets since the appearence of the RG50. That bike had similar effects, just about a buy and go deal.
