OK, I'm at a loose end the weekend of the 28/29th. Who wants to see some of the Northern Wairarapa?

Rough plan: Ride motorcycles, (or if no one turns up, 'motorcycle'), around the MAD loop. As always, I will be making the course up as we go along.

can't let you baitches ride unsupervised :wari:

My one free weekend left this month - I'm there - definitely one day and possibly two if that happens

had a blast following Bart around this loop last time (except for the pissing rain)

And yes its sad that JMJ will now be too upmarket to ride his cruiser with us :crybaby:

Dave - isn't there some injection that you can give the kids to make them sleep through the weekend?

I'd better start pulling the subframe to bits on the klr ro "de-floppy my rack" before then.....

If people are coming from the south, we may have to make it the MAE (Makairo, Akitio, Eketahuna). Doesn't quite have the same ring to it, but probably makes sense.

Rough plan: meet Pahiatua. Do Makairo (get this out of the way early), Towai, Waihi Falls (depending on time), Little Manuhara, Pongaroa, Akitio, Mara, Spur, Waihoki, Puketoi (if time), Pori (if time), Eketahuna.

This is roughly the route Mark and I did previously, but backwards.

That sounds way to organised, so expect it to not pan out that way.

Little ones may need to carry gas.

I'm sure I can figure something out. Will probably loose Towai and Waihi Falls, but can include Rimu road. Not a bad trade. Can still do a loop around the Little Manuhara if we make good time (which I doubt).

Otherwise, we can just make it up as we go along.

Trying to do the Google thing, but it doesn't like me. Best guestamate was 230km minus Makairo, so looking at 250km max.

Sounds about right, as I think Mark and I came in at about 240km. If we do Makairo both way, it's likely we'll take a couple of short cuts so the Latte drinkers can get home before dark. :woohoo:

pretty sure it was 250ish between gas stations

if I recall - last time I left home at 8am and got home at 8pm - 450-500km in total. Its a great loop

I don't mind doing a long day - or if the weathers good and I can bribe shmbo - an overnighter. Arent too many opportunities left before the silly season kicks in.

Nope. I'll try to figure how to save a route in google and post something up.

On second thoughts, who cares. It's supposed to be an adventure. The best rides are the ones that don't have a strict plan. With a planned route, you tend to ride to the clock. If you work on 250ish km, we should be able to get back to civilisation.

I am a starter, so long as the weather is not terrible. In view of the mileage between fuel stops I will have to bring my 650, so would prefer we did Makiro one way only, the easier way - West to East, although I am sure I could find something to do while others go back again, and regroup at a suitable place.

The track's fairly open now, so it's not bad either way. Doesn't look like we'll get much rain this week, so it should be a fairly easy run through there (famous last words).

Must be a bugger having all those bikes to choose from.

Must be a bugger having all those bikes to choose from.

Not as much fun as you might think. There is always something to warrant, register, clean, service or move out of the way. I would like to cut back - five is an absolute maximum in my view - and nothing wrong with fewer! - but this year got caught out with the opportunity to take over Merv's late Bro's DR and that cheap R100CS that needing rescuing . Since then I simply have not been able to (yet) bring myself to cut two loose.

Probably not much chance if the ACC outrage goes through, bike values will plummet (and I imagine the Vespa will be most affected, who will decide a scooter is a good idea when they cost more to register than a year's worth of fuel).

I was one of the few scooter operators I saw on the Bikoi last Tuesday by the way!

Michael

bart
23rd November 2009, 21:18
Yeah, I'm kinda getting excited about this too.

Looking at the tides, and it should be out when we get to Akitio. We could have a quiet tootle along the beach (no playing up in front of the township though. That really pisses off the locals).

If we make good time, we should be out there by 1pm. Might pay to BYO lunch. Your chances of a Latte and Panini out there are pretty slim.

Hopefully we get time to do Puketio road. I've only been down it, not up, so looking forward to that. Have to watch out for sheep, cattle, and goats on that one.

bart
23rd November 2009, 21:20

That's sad. They should be encouraging the use of mopeds and small bikes in cities. I just don't get it.

I did some sums, and I think it would work out cheaper for me to run the V8 to work and back each day, than register a big bike (if you'd call a 650 single big). Mind you, it's only 3km to work. And parking is NOT a problem where I work.

the weather looks pretty sucky for Saturday and betterer for Sunday

Bart - what do you think of delaying till Sunday?

FRONT MOVING NORTH TODAY AND SATURDAY BRINGS HEAVY RAIN AND SEVERE GALE WINDS

An active front is expected to reach the south of the South Island around midday today (Friday) and move onto the south of the North Island during Saturday afternoon. A very strong, moist northwest flow should spread over the South Island and southern North Island ahead of this front. Rain is expected to become heavy in Fiordland this morning, in Westland this afternoon and evening and in Buller, northwest Nelson and the Tararua Range overnight or during Saturday morning. Over a 12 to 15 hour period, up to 120 to 150mm of rain could fall in the ranges. There is also a chance that the urban areas of Wellington and the Kapiti Coast could experience 40-50mm of rain in a short period during Saturday.

People in these areas should watch for rapidly rising river levels, and in urban
areas, surface flooding is possible. Please keep up to date with the latest
forecasts and warnings.

Awesome shots Steve. You can take over photography duties in future, and I'll concentrate on riding.

My pics will have to wait until tomorrow.

I am jealous...
Have to ride by my lonesome this week....
I have hooked the camera up to the front mudguard, this gives the ride a different perspective. I can now use the helmet mount and change part way through. Look out for some footage coming to a KB site near you....PG13 :)

Yeah, it's a real good loop out there on a fine day. Great variety of roads and tracks. Only problem is fuel. You need capacity of around 250km.

If you ever need a guide...............

Some homeless bum at Akitio. I think that's a bottle of meths and a stale crust of bread he scavenged out of the rubbish bin.

Hey guys, I am amazed by your abilities to ride all day then have the inclination to sort & post up your photos so fast. After 560km my priorities were different - rum, another rum, dinner, bed. Thanks for another great ride. :woohoo:

Bart, you are so much faster than me, I'd never get a shot in. ;) I don't stop as much as I'd like, because I don't want to hold everyone one up. I need to start leapfrogging you guys...

You do a bloody good job, I enjoy your photos, & it means I get to star in (more than) a few of them, 'cause I'm always tail end charlie.

Nah, you were doing alright. We were all getting along at a reasonable speed yesterday. Any quicker than that, and you start missing all the scenary. My concern was that you guys wouldn't get home until late, having travelled so far.

I had an unfair advantage of knowing most of those roads quite well.

It was a bit wetter than expected, but still plenty of traction. It's starting to get a bit over growen. Not too bad at the moment, but in a couple of months, it may become interesting.

The rut is pretty much gone.

Your silver cruiser should make it through easy. ;)

Yeah, I need to sort something out. Only problem is there is no gas out that way (Pongaroa garage has shut). I'm sure I can figure something out. Might be able to buy some gas off a friendly farmer.;)

We could combine forces and try get access through all the coastal stations. We should be able to get from Castle Point to Herbertville. That could be worth investigating. :woohoo:

Cheers dude, but an overnighter is out at the moment. Just back from a work trip to Chch, and might be pushing it spending any more nights away from home. Will certainly take you up on the offer at a later date.

I might just go for a bit of exploring on my own if no one else is interested. No drama.
