Congrats on your learners!!
Now how long you reckon you going to keep your 250? Long enough to upgrade or you going to have it for longer than that?
If you planning to flick it as soon as your times up then get something you won’t lose money on and will get you around safely.
If you’re going to keep it for longer then get what you want, after all YOUR riding it, or do you let your mates pick who you go out with to?
Long and short of what I’m on about is make it cheep if you’re going to flick it after your time, looks aren’t important just not so cheap you’re never riding it only repairing it. Get something you like if you’re going to keep it for longer, and do a few test rides you’d be surprised how different some bikes feel, stop and go.

Hmm there doesn't seem to be that many bikes on sale at the moment...I wanted a 2002 GSX250FX,but someone got there before me..:(
I'm now trying to avoid bikes like the FZR,CBR,GSXRR,cos they are getting a little old...so I'm looking at Kawasaki GPX's,Suzuki Bandit's...
I do want an inline four really..are there any advantages to have a V-Twin?
PS,i really don't want a ginny,it just looks too old fashioned for me......

Much better on gas. That's about it i guess!
and only have two pistons to replace, as well as a less valves to bend etc.
but if you look after them you should have any problems. modern engines are nice like that
In my car days V (4, 6 & 8) enigne where always smoother in the drive. But I hated repairing them for cilents as basically there is two bank of pistons so you had two do the head gaskets you had to do two. instead of one. :shit:
so one each way I guess, but above is right if you have the same cc rating but more cyclinders you will use more gas.
Balding eagle
PS if you where wondering what car had the v4 engine it was a early ford van from the 1970 and it was rubbish

20th November 2009, 18:43
Ah right, yeah i will stick with the inline 4..
I looked at a 97 GSF250 Bandit today,I'm rather keen on it,the guy that's selling it hasn't used it much,it was a little noisy on startup,he had not started it for around 3-4 weeks..
Looks good,no scratches,the kms is 10952.
The only thing i picked up on is that it was a little noisy, but I guess that's normal due to non use.
Was imported in 2007,only done around 2000km since then.
What do you guys think?
Dirty Heathen
20th November 2009, 19:02
My FZR is noisy it is the clutch once you pull in the lever it goes away got to get my mech to look at he said noting major.
IL4 are pretty fun to ride man there amazing for a 250 you certainly wont get bored with one in a hurry.
If your not sure about the bike man and that noise get a mechanic to check it out its the only way to be really safe.
Had a few dramas with my bike already had a crack in the rocket cover had to get it welded and my front right fork seal has got a leak but apart from that bike got the thumbs up from the mechanic.

I think if you don't really know what you're talking about then you should get a professional to check it out. Although I was keen on getting a bike asap and my heart believed everything the guy wrote on trademe I followed my head and got it checked by someone who knew what they were looking at. Had a couple of issues I would never had picked up and got 800 off the asking price (which paid for the extra work it needed). 100 bucks isn't much to pay for piece of mind. It was a bandit as well (96) cool bikes and great for the taller learner.

Yeah,I do know a bit about engines, and it seems ok...
Is $4500 a good price? It's low kms,and no scratches at all really, plus it's an older guy that owns it.

I'd be a bit dubious about a 12 year old bike that had done less than 1,000ks a year.
My first thought would be is the odo accurate. If so then my second thought would be about rubber degradation.
Rubber wear is not just about tyres but about all the seals etc that are used in and around an engine and suspension etc, but to put it in the context of tyres - would you ride around on 12 year old tyres? Think about the seals etc in the same way. Modern engines are better than older ones but plastic and rubber still degrade over time.
I did read that Japanese manufacturers can use virgin plastic/ rubber where as european manufacturers have to use recycled plastic/ rubber. Virgin plastic lasts upto about 10 to 15 years from what I've heard. Recycled lasts about half that.
Anyway, some may shout me down on the above points but this was my thinking when I decided that a new or near new learners was best for my first bike experience.
Last thing I would say is to have a look at Hornets, as powerful as the later CBRs (which were reduced to 40 bhp) but with a less extreme riding position. Not trying to sell you mine - just trying to give you a heads up when buying a 250 of the different types out there. Competitors to the hornet are the yamaha zeal and the suziki bandit.
Regardless of what you buy, riding bikes rocks - you'll love whatever you get, the only question that you need to ask yourself is how long you will hold onto your first bike.
Enjoy trying the different types.
The Everlasting
20th November 2009, 19:54
Yeah, thanks for the above post,I do believe the odo to be correct,as it's only been in the country since 07,and the guy only bought it to re-take his learners licence(he had lost his licence when he was young).

Don't get me wrong - I'm not saying the current owner is lying about how much he has riden it. All I am saying that any bike riden for such a small distance each year may develop other problems if not stored correctly.
Engines are finicky things and require oil. If oil not on an engine then metal vs metal occurs (I think I'm telling you how to suck eggs here but anyway). With any bike of that age with such low Ks then you must assume that it has been stored at some point. Storage is not a good thing for engines.
Look, it is your choice in the end and the guy may well be a saint. All I am saying is that I wouldn't spend $4k plus on a 12 year old bike. Just to many unknowns and being an import there is a huge grey area of unknown about its history.
By all means buy it but drive down the price somewhat, or look elsewhere.\
The Everlasting
20th November 2009, 20:25
I already drove the price down,he had it at $4800.

Another Bandit,this one is a 1999,21200km..Limited Edition....negotiated $3500.
Seems ok,there is a bit of oil around the chain area, the idle wasn't 100 percent smooth, the needle went up and down a tiny bit.
Otherwise seems mint.

Just did a check on carjam, and it wasn't registered overseas, which is extremely rare,so there is no grey area.
Picking it up on Monday, can't wait!!

Congrats - glad you found one that suited you. Only heard good things about the Bandit.
You got a later year model for less money - all good. Save that $1000 you saved just in case anything needs doing.
Oil around the chain area very common. I thought my bike had an oil leak but it was just me being a bit overzealous lubricating the chain (damn stuff flies everywhere), Mechanic must have thought I was a right prat.
A bit of needle movement is not much to worry about at idle - most bikes move around somewhat.

I am only on my bike learners and had no issue with State getting cover for my bike might due to your age.
How ever they did shaft me with the excess because I was on my learner prem is only $168 a year but base excess is $400 plus another $400 due to length of time riding no excess on theft though.
I ma guessing once I get my restricted that excess will only be the base $400 not $800.

maybe your bike is listed under high risk or some shit strange though as I have a sports bike so you would think that would be high risk.
Did they even tell you why they would not cover it other then your license?
But yer I would tell them if they don't cover you bike you going to take all you vehicle cover else where.

I took my bike to my mechanic straight away got everything checked over the chain was too tight for a start but they went over the whole bike made sure everything was working and safe they also checked the timing chain and the value clearance (had a leaking rocket cover gasket so had to be done)
Valve clearance was bang on they also rode the bike and said it was running well gave me the thumbs up on a good buy.
I have trouble sometimes have trouble with neutral mainly moving the bike in out of the shed if I have left it in gear try moving the bike back forward that seems to work for me but normally anyway on take a few goes to get it.
But like I say man it piece of mind the last think you want is something going wrong with the bike at 100km for you own piece of mind I would get the bike checked over should not cost much.

You'll get that with every bike you ever own (I wish it had this etc). For some reason there is always something left out of the dash. On my striple it is a petrol gauge, but it has got a clock and temperature gauge (both of which my hornet didn't have, but the hornet did have a petrol gauge).
You soon get used to not having a gear indicator, swithing back and forth between the Striple (has one) and Hornet (doesn't have one) taught me this. If you have one you get used to glancing down to know which gear. But, in time you will learn to tell your gear from your speed and rev combo (plus sound). So while a gear indicator is nice when you are new to a bike they become less important as you get used to the bike.
One last thing, you should be changing down through your gears when coming to a "normal" stop. You should always aim to stop in first gear. Always practice this as it is a very good habit to get into, it applies engine braking and always ensures you are in first for when you are ready to start off again.

Yeah thanks dude,I am getting a little better with the gears. Took it for a service today, and needed a new chain, goes a bit better now. I thought having the VZ model with VVT was a good thing, turns out it's not good at all,the mechanic at Suzuki said cos it has that, you cannot adjust the valves etc...
Is this true? I'm a little annoyed,as I had no idea of that when i bought it,I just thought the Red cam cover was red for show...
If i had known this, probably would not have purchased it.

I don't know enough about Bandits to say for sure but your mechanic lamenting not being able to adjust the valves sounds a bit strange.
Generally you don't want to be adjusting the valve timing (which I assume is what he was saying). This is what VVT (variable valve timing) does. It changes the timing of the valves depending on the revs. The Honda VFR has variable timing as well - again some people think it's really clever and some people hate it for its complication. Either way I would guess that your engine switches from two to four valves at a set rev level (if it's anything like the VFR).
The reason for variable timing is usually to give engines more low end torque. I have a BMW car with Vanos (BMW equivalent of VVT) You can certainly feel when the valve timing changes as the torque increases noticably. In essence the vanos system tries to predict if the driver wants power suddenly (lets say when cruising normally at low revs). If you floor my BMW then the vanos will kick in and deliver more torque at lower revs (as opposed to when its not activated) which will get you to the higher revs quicker (where the real power is). Now the BMW car system is a bit cleverer in so far as it takes a number of inputs to decide if the vanos needs to kick in. In the VFRs case it is just one input (is revs above or below 6.5k).
Again not an expert on all this but going off what I had to get sorted with my BMW - closest thing I've experienced to VVT . But there is lots of reading about VVT on the web.
The attached page link I found by doing a quick search, it has the history of bandits in there. Looks like the VVT engine replaced the non-VVT engine. I doubt that Suzuki would have scrapped the non-vvt engine if it truly was the better of the two.

I personally would think you got the better bike and your mechanic is just lamenting that VVT is not mechanic friendly (most mechanics complain that they are over complicated).
Don't kick yourself you got a good bike by the sounds of it (it should have more low rev torque than the non VVT model).
But he's a qualified suzuki mechanic and I'm just a faceless bloke on the interweb so as in most things on KB - this is just an opinion.
Cheers

Ah yeah cheers for that, nah I think he was talking about not being able to check/adjust the valve clearances.
Cos that was one of the things they were gonna do,but as soon as he saw the red cam cover,he goes nah can't adjust the valve clearances.
but yeah no biggie, apparently it's okay for it to be a bit rattly, especially on the VVT model....*fingers crossed the bike stays healthy*

One gripe, sometimes when I have it in neutral,i put it in first, down, but it seems like it goes into second? Weird!
..and sometimes when changing from 1st to 2nd it will go into neutral, could potentially be dangerous...is it a fault,or am I doing it wrong? It doesn't always do it.

Remember, Neutral is in between 1st and 2nd.. When Changing up, Make sure you change the WHOLE way up. Yes.. I have done it myself and then i think SHTI! Change ALL the way, Not half..
It will come to ya man.

Yeah I was thinking about that soon after i posted that,I'll have to make a mental note to shift up a little harder from 1st...

Should make sure you change up harder through each gear as you find False Neutral if you dont shift hard enough.. Found those as well.. Had to button off the gas and let it select gear then off i went..
I now know it is my boots i wear that i have these troubles with. My tramping boots, I have noo trouble changing gear. Mainly in the Bike Boots i have trouble with..
*on the look out for some new boots*

Yeah that is true, sometimes when i don't do it properly it won't change gear, but with time I'm sure I will get used to it.
How long you owned your bandit? Is yours the VZ too?
I just wear normal shoes for now, will have to wait until I can afford some proper gear.

I run mine on 91. Put 98 in it once and it ran like a pile of poo, took a few tank loads to make it right again.
