To all noobs do not buy a gn250, not an old one not a new one get a scorpio, and I do not encourage violence
Storytime:
So need to go to Auckland CBD today meet up with a mate, want to take my zeal oh wait thats right its getting fixed. So I ask around last minute my stepdad offers me his Gn250, my first response was hell no because I owned it about a year ago when I was yb16 and made an oath to not go on one. Last minute alright then I will have to bear with it, off we go. WHAT THE??? I open it up and nothing happens, no pull, I see the needle going up but my speedo climbing like a old man on low dose of viagra. Im in 3rd gear trying to make it to 60kph with revs very high go, go, go, get it up I say get it up!. Then I find myself in 5th gear with half revs (7rpm) cruising at 70kph, my body position is like the little kids on the plastic trikes. Oddly enough suzuki made a bike with a high seat height for a 6ft guy but handlebars, pegs, seat position for a 5ft midget. I get on the motorway, yay im free like a range cowboy oh wait whats that in the distance, no it cant be, oh bollocks standstill traffic. Alright I can work with this so I pull in to lane split the usual. WTF!!! this bike is hard to keep upright at such slow speeds the cramped position is uncomfortable and the mirrors are so big to fit through the gaps. So I made it out of the battlefeild and im struggling to keep to 100kph on near redzone, again with the old man with low dose of viagra context, get it up I say get it up. So the rain comes along and im in CBD and Im pissed off so if anyone pushes my buttons.......a guy in a black holden commodore (police look a like) started coming right up behind me I told him to get back so he came even closer, I changed lanes he changes into that lane. I start pulling certain hand gestures he pulls it back with both hands so I made a detour to the docks carpark and he follows. I get to a stop, hop off my bike " you ****** *** the **** are you doing you wanna dance lets dance " we "dance", a lady hops out of her merc tries to stop us "dancing". I leave with a satisfied smile, justice served. Thats my rant for the day.

Are you seriously that much of a loser?

I suggest you get counselling.

Old GN250's are fine, new ones aren't so great - perhaps if you learnt to ride within the limitations of the bike your on then you won't get so angry.

Also, it may pay to get in touch with you 4th Form English teacher and get some tutoring. I've seen better creative writing from 10 year olds.

Thats very offensive and I dont respect you for that.
Gn250 is slow as hell, test ride one and you will see for yourself, also try taking it on the motorway.

What does it say about you if you didn't get a hint that your clutch is slipping, and a person reading a story can?

I did 20k on 12 months on a 05 GN, More reliable than my Fizzer.

Cry me a river?

I've ridden both sorts of GN250's before. I rode a new 2006 model and I'm well aware that it's top speed is in the region of 115kmh with me on it (6ft2 and 100kg+). I took it on the motorway and it was fine, I stuck to the left hand lanes so as not to be burden on anyone who wanted to go faster than the bike would allow. An older GN250 (I believe they were originally made 1983-1990) are capable of up to 140kmh in a good state of tune and with the correct gearing. Yes scorpio's are better bikes, but they aren't for everyone.

Congrats on your excellence/merit credits, too bad it would seem you left them at school.

I've ridden nearly 100,000km on all sorts of different bikes, each one has had it's gripes. The only times that I've ever been that pissed off with a bike was when working on them. As I said, I suggest you get counselling - would you be telling the same story if the guy you pulled the fingers at was Jake the Muss? I think not. It pays to keep your problems to yourself, because one day you'll come out second best.

If the purpose of your post was to tell 'noobs' not to purchase GN250's you get a Not Achieved. If your intention was to portray yourself as a moaning, ungrateful teenager that think's he's a tough guy then I'll give you a Merit, your grammar needs work.

I'll give you a green bling if you can guess what my intention is?

Buses suck, I'd rather ride a GN than take the bus. I can saythat too cos I'm going to be taking the bus for another 3 weeks :S roughly.

I wasnt slipping the clutch, It just wouldnt budge, reliable you say? So you never had a problem with the regulater/rectifier stuffing up, you never had to replace the battery because the regulater mucked up the whole circuit.

Once again the noble GN finds itself in the sights of a KB marksman. What it must be like to have your esteem caught up in what you ride. I choose to define myself by the quality of my relationships, my family.. you get the idea.

I could go on, but what's the point? There will be those that agree, and there will be those that will continue to sneer from behind tinted visors.

..The funny thing is, no one seemed to complain about the 2 GN250's were responsible for getting 2 riders into the protest yesterday to serve as marshals, so that others might enjoy the ride.

As for your "dancing".. mate this not the wild west anymore.. there may be some here who will be impressed by those actions- but just as many who won't

Lots have come on here and vented about cars being up their ass - some even have ended up in fights (as opposed to dancing).

Not many have too much of an issue with that.

BUT - the main point is that the GN is a brilliant little bike (esp the older ones) for a learner. Not much power - light weight - good riding position.

MANY, MANY riders have learnt on them and now they are experienced riders - they would still recommend to learner riders. And thats the issue with your post - you are talking crap about them not being good learner bikes.

So - make reasonable observations and its not likely that you will get ridiculed or (mass debated)* Heck - people may even be sympathetic to your waltzing in public.

I bet even in years from now you will still be calling me yb16 and pulling up new signatures..

Have you ever thought that gn250's are one of the cheapest bikes to buy on the market, have you ever wondered how many bikes get dropped in BHS, so why would they buy a ninja or hornet as a BHS bike.

Another mate, yes I have more than 3 mates, has been riding for 35 years he suggested the bike I bought it until he rode it and realised it is by far one of the worst. Old or new it still corrodes, regulater/rectifier screws the electrical circuit, tyres are shit shenkyo, handlebars are to short and the rise is ridiculous. Its gutless.

18th November 2009, 13:13
Generally the people who buy and ride GNs are learners, top speed they should be doing is 70kmph. You graduate to restricted licence and you can go faster, which the GN can do, 100kmph. Then they get their full licence and generally buy something bigger and sell the GN to the next learner who learns to ride on the GN and so it goes. They are not built for speed they are an entry level learner bike and fit that purpose they do well. If you want to pretend to be Rossi then the GN may not be the right bike for you. BUT as you and your "friends" were offered to borrow one for various reasons, again beggars can't be choosers, but obviously they are only after the "pose factor".
Oh and by the way, if I had some dick on a GN give me the finger I would piss myself laughing at him. It's like the little old ladies who cut you off at intersections and give you the finger, it's fucking funny!!

corrode - When I bought it for 3 grand at colemans new it corroded within 2 weeks really bad. I think I even have pictures for it, and threads of owners complaining about it look it up.

Regulator/rectifier - My zeal hasnt had the problem, My brothers cb125 hasnt had the problem, mates ninja hasnt had the problem, school mates cbr 250 hasnt had the problem, mates hornet 250 hasnt had the problem. It costs around $400 to get it replaced plus battery then add on labour.

If everyone on here is 5ft midgets then id be worried. Speedo's need replacing commonly ticks back and forth also.

My 1999 Yamaha R6 had a problem with it's regulator/rectifier and also the stator. A number of Hondas are known for having shite reg/recs too. GSXR1000k5/k6 had trouble with FRAMES cracking. Some owners of the new 09 R1 are reporting issues with the lower forks cracking. I heard recently that Toyota had to do a recall because the design of the accelerator pedal on one of their cars was causing it to get stuck on the carpet - leading to the car being stuck at full throttle. Believe it or not, the world of engineering and manufacturing isn't perfect.

Suzuki had 10+ years to better the gn250 and what do you know, its still shit.

Look the result of an innocent buyer in his first week of ownership. Plenty more where that came from.

Nope - its still ideal for what it is. A great little, cheap learners bike. Not to mention very successful.

They have been producing it since (quick check) 1980.

As for the innocent buyers bike (who's handwriting make it look like he's a retarded chimp) - perhaps he got a unlucky bike.

If every GN250 rusted within a week of them being sold (BTW how do they know that they are sold and that its time to rust??) - then they wouldn't have been the success that they were.

for the record - I had one for 3 months and never had a problem - or a bit of rust - and I ride rain or shine.

Gutless power, My Zeal which is slow can do 60kph in first gear which is the equivalent of high revs in third gear on a gn250. If I want to pass someone on the motorway I can accelerate past 100 on the zeal, the gn cant at all which makes it unsafe.

Why does not being able to pass someone make it unsafe? Many scooters are not able to go over 70kph and so do not go on the motorway. What makes it unsafe are your actions on the bike when riding it.

In contrast my old GSXR can do nearly 160kmh in first gear - does that make it unsafe?

GN's are learner/commuter bikes.
Its function is to be cheap to purchase and cheap to run. It does these things quite well, when properly maintained.
You can't say that something is crap because it won't do something it was never designed to do... Sportbikes aren't particularly cheap to buy or run either, everything is a compromise.

You clearly haven't grown up yet, try to be mature about this sort of thing. I'm not trying to troll you, you really need to listen.

Slyer, I respect that you are being honest and I thankyou for that now I can see how you could mis interpret that opinion, If I may.

I am not expecting it to be a sport bike, but really what is it made for? Around town the revs were fairly heavy just cruising in over-drive (5th) and around suburban area. I found the commute to be quite un-comfortable revving it to get up and go from the lights to be able to keep up with average cars going the speed limit. It cost me so much, I out of my genuine intentions hope a Learner doesent experience the extreme rage it brings with costs and corrosion. I really do think the Gn is over rated I once thought it was the bees knees so I speak as a ex converted owner.

Well I can't be that fat, I too had a GN and never found it as under powered as you are talking about, they are gutless, but that is not necessarily a bad thing for heavy fisted learners.
I call you stupid because an intelligent person would realise when people are taking the piss, winding you up and generally getting amusement out of baiting you and watching you bite. I'm hearing ya there, I've lived in NZ for 5 years, been on the bus twice. It's a hangover of mine from London Buses. Hate the things!

I dont get it? All i've ever done to my GN is put a new chain on it, new back tyre, and sand and paint some minor rust on the tailight bracket, as the previous owner stored it outside. Its been the cheapest commuter vehicle i've ever owned or used, and it goes... still quicker off the mark than most cars, and i have a twin turbo subaru to compare it to! It is a lot of fun to ride, if you know how to get the most out of it. Which by the sounds of it, you don't. I'd have to agree with some of the other comments on here, get the bike fixed up proper, and some decent training and you might actually find out that its quite good! As for 60kph in 1st gear, why would you ever need to? Thats why it hhas a 5-speed box!

Yes, the very things that make the GN250 the perfect learner's bike. From Dean's comments I would say that he somehow passed his licence, but he hasn't yet actually learnt how to ride.

l
Learning to ride a bike is a lot more than just fast starts and weaving through traffic. Its also about identifying when work is needed (like a slipping clutch or a speedo cable that needs oil).

Dean, go back and learn to ride properly and treat each bike you are on in the manner it was designed for, not the manner you wish it was designed for.

i had two ginnys when i started. my first was an old 86 that had a couple of small problems that could have been sorted by a mechanic. glad i didnt bother, cos she ended up getting destroyed by a car. she still started first pop afterwards, which is more than you could say for many bikes.
after than, i got an 06, which had a barrage of issues, despite being kept under cover and looked after well. however, that bike did get my 100kg + arse to paeroa and back with no troubles except that the speedo died.

if my current bike was off the road for any reason and i was offered a ginny, i would take it and be grateful that i didnt have to walk or take the bus

as a learner bike, the ginny is perfectly suitable. nice n cheap to run and buy, and not much that can be damaged in a low speed drop, unlike faired bikes. hell, even after my old one got hit by a car, it was still able to be repaired... all it needed was new mirror, bars, tank and shocks. the rest would have been able to be made good as new easily enough.

No idea - I have been away for some time. (Note to self - next time dont get caught)

Are they the same problems on the problem less Zeal that he had back in April - or are they a whole new bunch of problems?

For the past few days i have tried to start my zeal but to no avail, at first when choke and fuel tap is on the starter motor is turning over, can slightly hear it spark and fire up. But then after a few seconds the engine dies down to the point where a buzzing sound is coming from the battery area.
Its not the battery but something next to it ( i forgot what its called:wacko:) It is a inline4 if people are wondering (dont know if this common)

This is another problem - when i shoot it up into powerband which is about 10rpm and there is 16 on the rev count. It kind of bogs along, holding back from what it is capable of, carbs maybe need re jetting for that? considering it bogs down as if it hasnt got any fuel left in the tank.

so i have determined its electrical but could anyone please help me make a diagnosis of the problem here, so i can get it fixed/replaced. Help will be much appreciated thnx. Even just a few bits of help, really need to get it fixed.

I heard you can get them in a pack of 10, just in case your current one breaks.

Thats a good deal. The GS is a twin, would I need a powerband for each cylinder?

Nope, have it on good authority you can connect it in parallel...

Probably four of them mate, they just run of a pulley on the cam.
So DOHC has 2 for each cylinder, thats why they make more power than SOHC

Shcary talk shon- heres hoping no one callsh your bluff.

Piece of advice boy, (gained after 16 years of working and living with boys much more badass than you).. there will always be someone who will be bigger, faster, harder than you. Give up trying to sound like a man and try growing into one.

Na I had much, much better things to do than listen to a guy who doesn't know what he's talking about talk shit about GN250s, what a good rider he is, and about how tough he is.

Though it's a definite entertainment factor on here!
