View Full Version : My First real crash...

Well I thought I would post some pictures of my bike after my crash... It’s a sad day. My bike is totaled. At least I got an insurance pay out! Even though it did take them 3 weeks...
What happened is I was going for a blast through the country.. Pushing it a little, wanting to wear out my tires before I replaced them the next week... What do ya know the front tire looses traction around a corner as it went over some bumps in the road... and before I even knew it had slid out I was on my ass sliding down the road at about 120kph... It’s amazing how long you slide... felt like ages as i was sliding across the road... Until I hit the dirt bank on the other side of the road and did a few rolls.... Once I was stopped I looked up and saw my bike doing flips head over tail down the road thinking well that’s just totaled!! I lay down for a few seconds and thought well I better get the wreck off the middle of the road incase someone hits it and has an accident or something!! so I get up, put my right foot down and put my weight on it, and CRUNCH my ankle flops to one side and I fall on my side in a wave of agony!! That’s when I thought it time to call the ambulance!!
Anywhoo, a few nights in hospital, and a shattered tibular and fibula and an operation for pins and plates here I am, dreaming of my next ride!!

:niceone: you managed to dent just about everything on it bar the engine by the looks of it, you should try pick up the engine cheap from the insurance company and build a go cart out of it, how fun would that be - an r6 powered go kart, it'd probably be capable of about 200kmh! take it out for a burn over the motorway :devil2: it's what i would do :Punk:

Ouch.....
Hope you heal up well and fast...

ps - um pushing it a 'bit' on shagged tyres.... Asking for it really... Sometimes the last 20% of the tyre is pretty well useless, best to change them early

Ouch, these modern bikes seem to get written off easily...and then you just get paid out and buy another one.I seem to live in a different world.I gave up on the one last ride on the tyres a couple of years ago when I got a front tyre blow out.

I'm with you on this one Motu... They only have to fall over off the stand and $5K goes out the door...
Getting paid out is fine but then there are all the moans about 'they cost so much to insure'... Well duh!

Yeah I wish I could watch it from the side lines! Get to see for sure what happened!
Cheers for all the support guys! I will definantly get another bike, but maybe not this winter.. Motocross is a sure thing tho! i cant wait.. ;)
Sorry for not answering the trademe add XTC, was away over the weekend and forgot about it.. :P Answered now :)
One good thing out of having a broken ankle is you work out your upper body alot! I'm starting to shape up a bit.. But just wait till i get the cast off and i have one bulky leg, and one beanstalk.. thats going to look odd!!! :P

Well for some strange reason, the insurance company decided to GIVE me the bike for FREE!! I went and picked it up the same day I got paid out! Pretty strange! But I have the wreck at home. I’m going to sell the whole thing off to a wrecker or someone on trademe soon. Wrecker offered me 1500 bucks for it. Probly a good enough deal.
The engine looks OK except for both the side covers are shagged. The stator coil is buggered also. So it needs a little work to get going again... But that would be one HELL fast gocart!! Considering I got the bike up to 260kph!

just thinking about it, that would be a farken fun project, imagine how much fun you'd have on a track with it, a nice set of sticky tyres and you'd probably be able to get pretty close to your 260, probably not very safely though :ride:

something like this could work:

i'm sure you could figure out a way to do the engine transplant

Considering I got the bike up to 260kph! :whistle:So you'd say speed wasn't a contributing factor? :Pokey: :bleh:
Glad to hear you're on the mend. Last time I was through that way, there was a still a good bit of clay on the road from where you'd made the acquaintance of the bank..

That's a damn shame man! Shit you'r a great rider but unfortunatly some of us have to learn some lessions the hard way. Remember me and my stupidity for running a rear tire with wires showing through at rather high speeds? I was lucky to have gotten away with it and I guess you weren't lucky this time round. At least this will teach us all to respect the importance of good rubber on a bike, specially the front wheel.
Anyway, hope you heal fast and it's good that the insurance paid out. I was affraid that they might not because technically they could have said that the front tire you were running didn't comply with WOF standards, therefore no payout. But it's good to hear that this was not the case.
Hope you get back on the saddle asap when you are all fixed up.

Bloody hell mate bad luck, at least you got the bike back thats pretty cool - so you can sell that and get your excess back woot :D
So in other words a full new bike without much loss, and minimual pain, hope you mend up soon, and then go get a nice white ZX6R. :D
Arven
27th April 2005, 16:21
Well the front tire was actually warrantable! It had a good 2 or 3mm worth of tread left... The rear was OK round the sides, but was pretty warn in the middle from commuting (and the previous owner)... But I think the problem was that they were old rubber and was getting a bit dry. Now in hindsight I should not have been pushing them, but I had never had any problems with them in the past so I thought they must be fine! AHH well...
Definitely need good rubber! It’s the only thing keeping you from the ground!

i'm gonna do it, i'm hooked on this idea now, once i've saved up the 5 or so grand it will cost to build i'll make a kart out of a superbike engine, be a good project, but probably won't have time to do it for a couple of years

Hehe I'm keeping an eye on some virago parts on trade me at the moment. It comes with the engine, tranny, tank and tires and a half adoze little bits. I dont need most of it but I plan on using the engine and tranny for either building myself a nice little 250cc chopper or a dune buggy.

Just wondering...
Were you wearing motorcycle boots or normal shoes?
If you were, aren't they suppose to protect you from this kind of injury, at least a bit anyway?
If you weren't, do you think it would have helped?
thanks

So what will the next bike be??? Don't you dare say a Goldwing!!!
Did the insurance company pay out fully? How's your riding gears/helmet etc? I hope your ankles OK. Safe riding in future too.

Hope your on the mend mate :niceone: what kind of bike is on the cards now??

27th April 2005, 18:10
Yeap! I had boots on. but they didnt have any side supports or anything. I believe they helped keep my bones inside the skin!! With shoes on i think i would have the bone splinters spiking through the skin! Not nice! :puke:
Not sure on the next bike yet. I'm looking at buying a house at the moment so the next bikes probably going to be a cheaper one.. Maybe an SV650 or something cruisy.. Not sure yet. If i had heaps of spare cash, it would be an 05 R1 no question... :ride:

shit dude.... I feel for ur. I slide my 3 week old bike down the road at around 70~80k's last sunday.
if you need something to past time while healing up at home just PM me, I have a good collection of movies.
I was lucky to not be hurt by the tarmac, except a very hard elbowing of myself into the chest. suspected bruised / cracked / broken rib.
I recon its the bits of rain and crap on road that is causing all these crashes... and also having to adjust our head to wet / winter riding from our summer mood.
take care...

Heal up quick, and don't stay off the saddle any longer than you have to.
