Any ideas who ? I suspect they mean the Naenae/Wainui firebreaks.....

A few months back my brother in his 4WD smashed in to a push bike in the naenae/wainui firebreaks ( My brother is a rigger so he was doing transmission work up there )

Put it like this, the push bike was going at such a speed down hill the handle bars went through the radiator of the Mitsi Challenger... They had to get another work 4WD and a transporter to get the 4WD out. 4WD was totalled as it swerved to miss the push bike in to a bank..... The rider had a few broken bones...

Dirt-bike riders collide Stuff.co.nz
Last updated 07:14 04/12/2009

Two dirt-bike riders collided head-on in the hills above Wellington last night and had to be taken to hospital by helicopter.

The Wellington Based Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to the hills above Naenae after the two Wainuiomata men, both aged 35, collided as one was driving up the hill and the other down around 9am last night.

One man suffered upper leg injuries and the other patient had suffered a shoulder injury.

The helicopter with two Wellington Free Ambulance paramedics on board flew to the area after a third member from the riding party guided it to a landing site from 10km away with a torch.

A rescue helicopter spokesman said night vision goggles worn by the pilot and co-pilot made spotting the torch possible from the distance.

The patients were flown to the Wellington Hospital Emergency Department where they are being treated.

The men were from the same riding group.

Bummer, bikes come up really fast when head on. hope this dosnt spur the council into clamping down on the area.

Im pretty sure Motox bikes are banned from the firebreaks, can only walk or use a push bike up there according to the city council.

After hearing what happened with my brother i won't be riding up there on my motox, its not just the coming off that will hurt you...

Lying in hospital thinking of how you are going to pay for the 4WD you totalled and whats the bet ACC won't cover your medical stuff because its illegal to ride your motocross up there or something dumb like that.....

acc loves to pay for shit they shouldnt.

i know of someone who got shitfaced drunk, drove, crashed, lost half an ear, and then months later acc is paying for purely cosmetic surgery to put it back on

That's a bit of a nightmare. Sounds like they had a bit of a wait in a lot of pain as well. Head on/Combined speed makes thing so much worse. Double bad news. Prangs like these wont help with access.

Yeah booom, ACC couldn't wait to fork out $10,000 for that scumbag Burton's fancy artificial leg, when best he should get is a couple of second hand crutches. Elderly War vet gets smashed over by thug and has to fight to get sorted.

Bring in a scumbag tax/levy. Put them to work.

Hey, stop hassling the Nui! :bleh:
I hear plenty of bikes in the firebreaks above my place, is very tempting to go up there but I've been up there once on the dirtbike and feel its just too dodgy. Didnt a guy on a dirtbike die up there a few years ago? (and not at the hands of Graham Burton)

Thought he was on a quad ? i know some sort of bike was involved..... I must admit it does look like a good ride though... From the nui are we ? Whats the go with riding out coast road...

Also can you ride at the end of Wellington Road ?

You could be right about the quad - I dont know the details, have just seen the little memorial up there for him.
I think if you want to ride down the coast road you have to get permission from the guys who own the farm station? There was a bit of a thread about it on here a few weeks back...
Dont know about riding down the end of Wgtn Road - is that Upper Fitzherbert Road or something? I've cycled down there but not gone down there on the dirt bike

Now now crazy horse don't get too excited, I think you will find that most people who own dirt bikes also own cars/utes/vans to transport them and quite a few also own road or dual purpose bikes.

FTR I own a ute, a road bike and 2 dirt bikes. If they decided to bring in reg for dirt bikes as well the upcoming exobitant reg for road bikes I would be up creek without paddle.

Yeah I know..... my kids both have them too, but the ACC thing is frustrating, and I would rather cage's get increased too. It should all be accross the board - fair and even :done:

Yeah it was quite a few years ago now that he died, thats why they decided no more bikes etc up there, to many accidents, doesn't stop anyone going up there though cos its a bloody good place to ride !!

Go da Nui !! :Punk:

We're keeping our heads down hoping not to be noticed. Bastard levies certainly are a crock though, I feel your pain - from a distance.

are comparing the risk between a car and a road bike?

Hold on a minute, it was my understanding that the government takes a percentage out of ALL petrol taken from the pump and gives it to ACC and the other part to fix roads etc....

So for Motocross through to lawnmowers, anything that uses petrol is already being taxed for ACC through the cost of Fuel AND dirt bikes are already paying road tax in the fuel for the road we do not use.

without turning this into an ACC argument, the ACC content on a car reg is doubling and the ACC levies on earnings are going up too, thats the whole point they're screwing us many times over all for the sake of a bookkeeping glitch, road bike rider, dirt bike rider, car driver, pedestrian, we should all be pissed
