View Full Version : Killer Bug Outbreak + general illness

Since I've been sick since Sunday past, and I don't feel any better (worse even) and together with the Killer Bug outbreak at Wgtn Hosp Neonate unit (just over the road from the hospital I work at) I was wondering, is anyone else sick at the moment? Almost half the people I work with were coughing and otherwise looking ill yesterday. Over at Wellington I think 18 nurses (or thereabouts) have this "killer bug" as well as a few babies.

Don't think I have THAT bug, but it feels close

Killer bug? First I've heard of it. I'm not feeling too hot at the moment, but I think it's a mixture of long hours and cronic hayfever. Get well soon man. :niceone:

Did you see the report on Close up? Bloody ridiculous the way she was interviewing him, being way too critical

For feck's sake Stoney. You paranoid hypochondriac. It's only Staphlococcus aureus. Common as mud. As easy to kill as an Iraqi moped courier.

That don't surprise me.

All these 'soft cocks' who get antibiotics for a little cold, shit, this is why bugs are getting resistant.

just wait until we have real superdooper bugs. Then all who take the stupid medicine for nothing (and hence have no immune system) will all die a horrible death. And all the dirty little africans and indians will survive because they actually have immune systems.

I sorta have a health check every 3-4 months. When I go to donate blood (but not to the road). Other than that, I can't remember when last I visited a doctor. Probably about 3 years ago.

Our family doesn't even have a proper family doctor....

Bear in mind also that Staph aureus is REALLY common amongst newborns. Both my successfully spawned kids had staph spots for the first couple of weeks. The babies that died had a 50/50 chance of survival. Premature babies born between 24 and 28 weeks are as a fragile as any living thing can be, and only survive with intense medical intervention. The slightest load on their tiny systems kills them, as their immune system just isn't working yet.

On another note, I feel like crap. Tired, rhinitus is driving me nuts, and I just want to cry all the time. I might be pregnant!

Me neither.
But, I was real sick last week, got better went on holiday, came back to a sick baby, then got sick again .... I'm starting to feel better, but my baby, even tho slept through the whole night last night, still insists on playing in water fully clothed and then running around in only a nappy giggling at the top of her lungs "Look at my fat tum-mee"
*sigh*
It's hard to keep a serious face on ....
I'm not down with the sickness ...

Nah that's just PMT or maybe you're going through "the change".

Me I'm tired, grumpy, my eyes hurt, my arms ache...meh, all the usual symptoms of being a student.

Just another good reason to have medical insurance. Then you can avoid the disease incubators called public hospitals.

It's not an outbreak of a "killer bug" it's just a slightly more virulent strain of Staph. It's still just as succeptible to antibiotics as any other one though. Yay for the media blowing things way out of proportion again though....

Yeah yeah. It's now just over 50 (five zero) years since I went to a doctor. (Actually, I was taken by my mother)

And bugs don't infect me, I infect the bugs.

Hehehe

Hey, you're halfway right, and Mr Melon is 75% right. It is Staph. aureus BUT it's a new strain, NOT easily treatable with conventional methods.
I didn't say it was the fecking Ebola virus!

But, I went to work today and got told to piss off and go home (not quite those words). So I did, stopped off and hired a PS2 and Gran Turismo 4 :Punk:

I've been sick for almost a week now, and it's getting worse. HOWEVER, I have NOT gone to the doctor and I'm not taking anti-biotics.
I don't really care, just wish I could sleep (through the coughing).

Relative of mine is a nurse in unit and is one of the nurses off work due to testing pos for bug....no symtoms...was looking after one of the babies that died...not nice specially when they have young kids of own..told me felt sorry for parents of kids with all this publicity...was not transfered from staff so that was a relief for them. A pretty emotionally draining job nursing in these units

Yeah - I know the doctor they interview, and I'm pretty sure that his wife was saying that evidently it can be wiped out with penecilin and that it's all pretty much just media-hype (yet again)!

Virulent != antibiotic resistant.

Unfortunately bacteria have a very nasty ability to reabsorb the DNA of others. So supposing that we had two bacteria, one with antibiotic resistance and the other one that is the virulent strain. If you kill the virulent strain bacteria via antibiotics then the antibiotic resistant one may pick up the DNA which makes the other virulent.

Now if you want to be really worried the bacteria which we spray our crops with (because we genetically modified it to secrete a crystal which kills certain types of insects [mainly catipillers]) closest relative is anthrax. And it'll will quite happily take up the bit which makes anthrax lethal to animals.

I'm the same. I don't have a family doctor. I don't have any health records... The after hours doctor in Newtown (Welly) charges an EXTRA $10 if you don't write downt the name of your regular / family doctor. I mean, wtf! I'll just make one up next time.

It's funny, I follow the servicing requirements of my bike to the "T", wash / polish it regularly and otherwise take great care of it. Me? Haven't been to a doctor for AGES!

Hmm - I assume you are talking about BT (Bacillus thuringiensis), and that this is the same BT that is used as a pesticide by Organic farmers. There is no way that they would ever get orgainc certification if Bacillus thuringiensis toxin was in any way genetically modified (I'd have a good :killingme  at organic farmers if it was). That, and NZ's strict controls in the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act would be unlikely to allow release of any material containing viable genetically modified bacteria.

As to Bacillus thuringiensis and its relationship to Bacillus anthracis, both are bacilli of the same genus, so they are phenotypically similar, but BT is quite distinct in its production of intracellular protein crystals that are toxic to lepidopteran insects. The pathogenicity of each species of bacterium is in fact quite different, and specific to each type of host - you make light of horizontal gene transfer, which isn't at all likely in this case given that the last case of anthrax in NZ was in 1954 - in an animal. See here.

If you're worried about anthrax, worry about which armies have it, not about a soil bacterium naturally toxic to lepidoptera - I'd be far more worried about a decent dose of influenza personally...viruses - now there's a cool pathogen! :msn-wink:

Don't scaremonger with spurious examples! :nono:

This is about all you need to know about anthrax and a bit about BT too.

/Rant.
