View Full Version : I don't particularly like Harleys

But I wanted a bike that that could do all the same things; cruise around town, short commutes on the motorway, look good parked outside the coffee shop. Of course I wanted something with similar power and handling, just a little more affordable. I finally found the perfect alternative, a Vespa.

Ok, confession time. I saw a black Harley something - its the one with the ultra fat back wheel and the duck bill tail with the integrated led lights following the profile of the tyre. No idea what model but I though it looked pretty sweet - for a cruiser.
It pulled away from the lights when it saw me on my gs500e lone bike but I quickly caught it with a little rpm from the crap parallel twin engine
I started thinking, mmm, that's pretty nice, maybe I would by one one day - but as soon as it went around a corner and I saw the foot pegs waaayy too far forward I came back to reality. :bash:

Scroters aren't motorcycles.
I dunno, depends on your definition - automatic 50cc moped-types that can be ridden on the car licence are definitely weiner-mobiles, but then there are what I consider to be 'proper' scooters (must be manual gear change, and two stroke of decent capacity)...
I have a bit of respect for those that turn up at rallys on a scoot. Kudos for dealing with the wobbly little wheels, top heaviness and idiosyncratic handling that comes from having the engine on the side of the bike... Add a bit of blue smoke and the sound of a stone being shaken inside a can, and I can't help grinning at the fun they seem to have...

I'm not allowed one because I've been circumsized, and you've gotta be a complete dick to own one.

So half cocks like yourself cant own a decent bike then... bummer.
As to the OP... have fun on your vespa... its prob as much power as you should be allowed to control.
I can see the future of this thread being available only in black.

I can own a decent bike, actually I already do.
I could also own a harley aswell but I'd find breaking my habits of being curteous, respectful and waving to other bikers a bit too hard to break.

I have a '10 Electra Gide Ultra (in Blue) test bike.
Excellent motorcycle. Possibly the smoothest V-twin engine I've ever ridden. Very tidy handling, good brakes and quite zippy for the size of the unit - and all the luxury and comfort stuff is first rate. The Harmon-Karden stereo rocks.
I'd rate it an very good touring and cruising bike. One of my all time favourites in fact.
The only place the Vespa would see it is lane splitting.

Pointless thread meant to bait Harley owners. If you don't like Harleys, well, who gives a shit?
If you're into bikes, really into bikes, your 'lottery winner' garage would almost certainly contain a Harley. Mine would, and a Ducati, a few Guzzi, a cool retro-style Italian scooter, some dirt bikes, etc. etc. etc. But then, I'm genuinely into bikes.

Guess I the dig was unnecessary, but my point is scooters are a heap of fun around town and on the motorway (the bigger ones anyway). They are the way to go if all the riding you do is around the suburbs. NZ is one of the few countries that motorcyclist's tend to look down on scooters with a "not macho enough for a real bloke" attitude. Any pic's you see of Rossi about town he's riding a scooter. I love motorcycles and to be fair a lotto winning purchase would include a pre '47 Harley. When it comes to the right tool for the job, a scooter wins hands down for city commuting, (which seems to be the sole haunt of a lot of Harley's) my ZX10r for the Coro loop.

Scooters are like fat girls. Lots of fun but you wouldn't want your mates to see you riding one.
