You had better watch out on that bit of road now - you may have a few cars run up your arse while they are reading the sign .........

My favorite bit of road has a sign with a motorcycle on it saying "enjoy the ride, not the race"

Problem is they put it on a bit of road just before a couple of nice bends ...........

I do notice there is no AA sponsering of it?

I didnt see any other sponsorship details on there. Looks like a solo North shore city council initiative. I think its great. Might be a good time to lobby them for some more free (motorcycle only) parking spaces around the city as well !

Spending money on billboards is diverting money from actively teaching people threat assessment, observation and practical riding skills.

Passive advertising campaigns only impress the people looking for them.

You may well be right from a safety perspective; however, from a political perspective having public money spent helps to legitimise motorcycles as valid form of TRANSPORT and not just toys.

There's signs like these all over the BOP. It is reassuring to see them.

I'm a little puzzled about the actual picture. What side of the road is the car travelling on and what direction? Is it me or is the picture sense all out?

The only source I need is the plateau in road deaths then the gentle increase that's followed to point out that any graphic campaign and any targeted road safety advertising isn't working. The Manukau/Counties Road Traffic Superintendent was a bit distressed to find that rather than a decreasing number of drunk drivers on the road in their big blitz a couple of weeks ago the numbers were up slightly and there were more women being caught.

I have done a little bit of study in cognitive perception and road safety advertising ticks none of the boxes for an effective response from a typical human. There's nothing in it for the individual. You can't change attitudes with a big picture, nor can you impart any extra useful skills or knowledge.

Stupid sign. I already always look out for motorbikes :)

How about:
"Hey ignorant car driver. Leave your mobile phone/radio/cup of coffee/lunch/breakfast/electric shaver/ makeup/ or deep and meaningful conversation alone! And pay attention to what you are supposed to be doing"

Matt_TG
13th December 2009, 17:31
Whenever I see those signs with a goatee'd cop holding a speed reading thing I instinctively look at what speed I'm doing, and at that time it's an effective response. I would imagine that 'typical' people retain info they see, even for a fleeting second (perhaps even subconciously), and that maybe what it takes for that driver to look for the next motorcyclist. In any case, all it costs is a sign, so why not.

Or perhaps James is referring to the knuckle draggers that have the attention span of a goldfish. Study info would be good to see indeed.

NOw that's a fantastic billboard, we have ones all around here saying look out for cyclists, maybe the NCC should mix it up a bit and get some of these out there too!!

Absolutely ! I reckon if we get our mayor to harrass John Key with txts during the night we could probably convince him to get this campaign to go nationwide !!

coz it's been taken over sea's, as the cars are left hand drive etc...

still it may help, but attitudes still need to change towards bikes,

I like the fact someone is doing something. Jury out on effectiveness, I see.

The one on Mokoia Road in Birkenhead is in an interesting position.

I would upload a photo but I'll be buggered if I can get it to work right now (even under 100KB). Anyway..

It's parallel with the road and at the end of a 2 into 1 lane merge that is often frequented by trolls with about 10% of the road awareness they should have. So if it catches someone's attention they could be looking sideways to read the thing as they run over you.

Still, at least it's right outside the firestation so they can lift the car off you and then give First Aid while you wait for the Ambos.

Cheers - Chasio

PS It was quite tricky to get the photo. I had to ride without my helmet and leave my gloves off so I could frame and take the shot as I rode past. Decided to pop my jandals and boardies on as well, since it was lovely and sunny. ;)

PPS Edit: Managed to get a photo to upload by using a different PC

It's that well positioned that I haven't even noticed it. I hate that junction, it seems that cars just have to try to get in front of you, no matter how much they have to speed up until they are right beside you just as it turns in to one lane.
