Naa...Don't think so.
That was a load of crap, worse than Fair Go's worst ad of 2009...
We will have to wait and see what this entails I guess. A 1200cc shaft drive bike with lots of chrome and a 19 litre tank... A real Adventure bike.....NOT!

Nope parralell twin like the TDM and S10's. Gearbox and clutch are up high behind the cylinders. Keeps the weight low for a slightly lower centre of gravity. Bike still weigh's a ton though!!

How heavy do ya reckon she'll be? The ally framed tediums are miles lighter than the steel framed 850's.

Was hoping for belt or shaft drive but I reckon she'll be chain driven.

Wonder if they'll bring out a "little brother" 900cc edition like the beemer 800's.

A danger with the tease strategy is the reality not matching the anticipation.

Not sure what the TDM's weigh in at. The old S10 is around 230kg's. BMW's are slightly more than that, so I would like to think they would be lighter than that. Ideally less that 200kg but I wouldn't count on it!

Not sure what the TDM's weigh in at.The 850 is a kg or two either side of 200kg (dry, claimed) depending on model, the alloy-framed 900 is 10kg lighter.

Dissapointed, very disapointed. This bike certainly does not appear to qualify for the Super Tenere badge. "Upgraded" TDM maybe. It's just another V Strom/Varedo/GS.

261kg wet!!! 19 inch front wheel with a 110 wide tyre. 190mm suspension travel, side mounted radiators,

Lets just say I'm bloody glad I didnt pass up on the 950 Adv to wait for it (not that I'd ever be able to afford a new one but you get the idea). Hell I'd rather have kept and upgraded my old XT750Z than bought that ..... thing!

Hey...we can dream.

But, but, but, what about a 1200 TDM, hopefully a fair bit lighter though. I notice the weight is with 23l fuel & 4l oil. I could be persuaded to by a TDM 900 if I could put the 1200 motor in it...

25th February 2010, 19:20
Well after all the speculation I think it has delivered more than expected as far as technology goes. Traction control, ABS, some D thingy mod.

I haven't managed to see a pic of one without the ugly pannier boxes tho. As far as intial appearance goes it follows in the same directon as the Tenere.
Plentiful well thought out accessories - obvoiusly listened to the people wanting to buy one.

A GS? - Yep pretty much so but then that's the brand it would be competing against as it would have to be pretty special to coax a fanatical KTM rider away from their marque.

Would i buy one? Hmmm if I was to really ride around the world or do really big miles cos that's what it looks like to me - a big serious mileage machine - like a BMW 1200 GS.

I'll carry on researching but yeah I think Yamaha's delivered a biggie this time.

Hitcher
25th February 2010, 19:28
Hitcher likes. Yamaha have considerable experience in Paris Dakar and other endurance events. They're obviously looked hard at what riders in this category need in a bike. This is a brand new bike rather than a 660 on steroids or viagra. It has all the niceities and knick knacks required by a rider who plans to do considerable saddle time. Hmmm. 23 litre tank and a shaft. Nice.

young1
25th February 2010, 19:29
Two more thoughts (I am a bit slow tonight);
Traction control, I can just see the problems if that failed in the middle of no where (although does the GSA have it?)
Exhaust and cut away pannier, I wonder if they tried to tuck the exhaust up under the seat eg like the 990, which would not have affected the volume of the pannier

I still like the look of it though, it is good to have another option.

Padmei, if you play the video on the Yamaha site, there is a shot of the bike at the end less panniers.

It is a GS.Spot on. It's a Jedi bike, with a different badge on it.

Can't blame them for cashing in though. Comments in the bike mags at the moment are noting a consolidation of 'big bike' models and focusing on high volume cheap small bikes for emerging markets. Which means that our niche within a niche is going to have slim pickings for a while.

You are right, it is a brand new bike, apart from the similarity to the TDM engine. This bike has little material association with Yamaha's Paris-Dakar efforts, but all of the marketing. It is much more a Super TDM than a Super Tenere. The Tenere was always a glorified trail bike, this thing has no such pretensions, and as such I feel they have mis-appropriated the name.

Clearly they don't care about real adventure use or they wouldn't do 230Kg ++++ bike (unless you go riding with a couple of 4WD with 3 people each). What they clearly did IMHO is a bike for people with $$$$$ to take customers out of GS, which most likely won't be using it off road.

If I were touring around the world wouldn't pick a bike that cannot lift in the eventual situation bike is laying on the ground ...

So far they re-did Tenere which is again heeeeavy and this one which is heavier... they are surely nice looking road bikes.

these are not adventure bikes for most riders.for me the attraction is a big(i am 6 3") bike with an awesome ride(coutresy of the long suspension travel),shouldnt cost a fortune to run (twin cylinders) with relaxed ergonomics. The fact that they will be reasonable gravel road bikes with some capacity for even rougher sections of road is a bonus.

Was lucky enough to sit on the Super Tenere First Eddition promo bike at Lofeten in Norway.

Having only read briefly about it it would be safe to say these are not adventure bikes but tourers with a sit up position.

It is a motha of a bike alright...BUT, looking at the video of the Dutch press flicking it around, it didn't look too bad. The thing that got me about the release was that NZ wasn't included in the first release with all the extra add ons. Australia was, this was luggage, crash bars, lights etc. I may be wrong but this was included for European release as the first edition. For the $24000 they are asking it would have been a good buy, but good bye now..:)
I did read this on the press release article, rang Yamaha NZ and that was the answer I got. PLUS, the dealer wanted a deposit up front sight unseen to reserve the bike because numbers were limited for us here and they were mostly pre sold....Bummer.

I had a decent spin on Trevor's demonstrater today, on a mix of seal and gravel. Overall, good fun and easy to ride. Peppier in the mid-range than my R1200GS Adventure, feels lighter to ride, lower seat height, 20 km/l, great mirrors. A bit icy, in places!

With knobblies (and a bash plate) it'll go wherever similar bikes go.

and a bash plate it'll go wherever similar bikes go.......You gotta pay for that...:) And all of the other bits that are in the photos to make it look a superb Adventure steed....Overall, gotta say I think it looks great but disappointed to be alluded to the fact that the first edition might include extras like Europe, Sth Africa and Aussie.......

The Japanese are just not getting it. Well not from a kiwi point of view. These will probably sell like hot cakes in europe where their idea of adventure is a little different.

These are selling well in NZ. The first shipment is sold out and we are taking orders already for the next shipment.
