I was coming down godley road today, towards the speed camera,I was thinking if you were going too fast heading towards the camera, surely they wouldn't be able to give you a ticket,as we only have number plates on the rear...

Not that I'm speeding down that road, was just thinking....

My weekend job was delivering produce last year in the mount.
As you expect, we did get tickets every now and then from the same camera.

We always got the pics to identify the driver, and as far as I can remember they were only ever shooting the vehicles traveling away from it.

I haven't yet tested that theory but I also know that the stationary cameras use markers on the road to determine the speed, which I only spotted the one lane going away from the camera.

That's why I think they probably don't bother to shoot vehicles coming towards the camera.

I'm probably wrong, but at least I sound smart. =D

i thought they used magnets under the road like the ones they use to trigger some traffic lights.

i thought they used magnets under the road like the ones they use to trigger some traffic lights.Fixed cameras use inductive loops, mobile use microwave (K-band for the new digital, Ka-band for the older type). And both mobile and fixed cameras operate in both directions.

I wouldn't want to test out that theory...:p

but it would be interesting to know whether they only do traffic going away from the camera..

Actually ... not long after speed cameras were first introduced, that theory was tested. The Bike, and rider was distinctive enough in the photo, to get a successful conviction ... custom paintjobs (and your name on your leathers) can be your downfall ....

Folk in the UK have been caught out by that kind of thing...

Cameras only point one way,and you only have one number plate...
Easy to work out ..if the camera is pointing at your front stick one finger up as you trip it off.If you are going the other way point the front wheel in the air and the number plate to the ground thus rendering it unreadable....but hey someone told me that.

A Fairy Story
Retold by P38

Once upon a time an Urban Myth was started where by some motorcyclists modified their Motorcycles and mounted their number plates on spring loaded hinges complete with a solinoid trip release wired to the horn button of said mythical Motorcycles. When tripped the number plate rapildy rises to a fixed position where by the Revenuers camera takes a nice photo of the edge of said number plate. Special care is taken when mounting said device so the plate doesnt rise too high as you can be sure the revenuers will then get your number, albeit backwards and upside down.

Whoa! What happens at WOF time you ask?.... Surely the wof inspector would notice and ruin the plans of said Urban Legends.
Not So!.......as said Urban Legends are cunning as. :shifty:
I'm guessing thats what the self tapping scew hole is for.:msn-wink:

So when these Urban Legends are riding their Motorcycles on the open road, minding their own business and happen to spy a Revenue Collecting Camera Van or Pole Mounted Money Maker waiting to pounce on unsuspecting Motorcyclists, No worries, they don't hurriedly and/or unsafely rapidly scrub off large amounts of speed in the hope their reactions are quick enough to beat the revenuer.
No.... they just toot and give em a wave as they blast on by. :devil2:

N.B.
Remember this is a fictious fairy story and any resemblemance to any said modified Motorcycles both in the present and/or in the future is purely coincidential and the writer takes no responsibility for anyones actions that may or may not arise from this story. :msn-wink:

Enough said
The end. :apint:

Simply making it drop DOWN not up and covering the back completely eliminates this.

Nice!!!!

But I wouldn't know anything about that variant to my story.

Sounds like another well thought out, problem solved, Myth to me. :msn-wink:

Are these prevalent around Auckland?I've received no alerts from any of the camera vans I've passed recently.
I think I will turn the K band back on on my V1

There are quite a few fixed cameras around where I live,so I'm sure there are a lot more further out,and around auckland.

And that folks, is the crux of the matter - you have to be able to spot/remember the cameras......or your $10 plate 'modification' is trumped by a $230 ticket.

Oh, and don't forget to 'reset' the plate afterwards - don't want a $200 ticket for failing to display it, do we?

Heres an original idea...instead of spending all this time worrying, modifying, playing with your horn...just stick to the speed limit like the rest of a majority of drivers.

I did that six months ago, of course now the V1 picks up all the other shit you get in built up areas. I only hook it up out of 50 K areas now. G.

I don't have a detector ATM but I know that my mate's Passport 9500i doesn't pick them up regardless of whether K-band is enabled or not.

Multiple threads and posts around here confirming this. Normally a short-range detection with cheaper detectors. Your V1 should have a much better detection range.

Theres one coming into Cambridge where I and another biker tested this theory.

The new camera's seem to be very low frequency, my V1 picks them up but definately need to have the eyes peeled as reaction time is now much less. Used to pick the old cameras up a km away now its only 100-200m. But then again if you arnt speeding it doesnt matter:whistle:
