View Full Version : Thanks Cops!!!
Man,
Coming home from work tonight at midnight, going up carrington road past the unitech, the bike was running a bit rough so decided to open her up a little, only to 8000 revs and then break back down, and do it again, only took it up to about 70-80k -
did this 2 times, and then i see red and blues behind me which came outa no where.
I pull into side street and pull over. Meeting goes like this -
Shade : "Hey fellas"
Cop : "Hey, how fast do you think you were going there? We dont have a radar, so we wont ticket you, but just outa curiousity"
Shade : "About 70k - speedo seems to read low, so maybe 80k, then slowd back down, did it a couple of times as the bikes running rough"
Cop2 : "ahahah yeh whatever, we were doing 120+ to catch you"
(I was thinking huh? Catch me? From where? i didnt do it for long, heh)
I was like, nah i dont think so, didnt take it that high up.
They were cool as about it, pretty good guys and said no worries have a good night. I think ive used up all my Good Karma points!! Thanks police, i would have gladly accepted a 70-80k ticket, and got off. I owe you one!
Oh, they said when i pulled into the side street they thought i was going to do a runner, lol.
:niceone: Very very lucky indeed. Was it one of those little wanna be po-po vectras or something?
120 when you are reading 70.... yes OK mabey as they were accellerating to catch up..
Nice one though man. I got 90 in a 50k zone and 1.3k worth of ticket (thanks L conditions), wish I was you :(
Lol, shows they are not as bad as people say, unless you are the bugmans son aye tristan ;)

out of curiosity... what's the damage for 50kph over the limit (i.e. 150kph in a 100 zone)?
MDU
$630, 50 demerits. 151kmh is 28 day roadside suspension

I got pulled in the car once and got let off. I gassed it a little around a corner/lights on purpose to see if the new tyres were sticky in the wet (they were..) and then carried on at normal pace, about 55-60 (honest).. When the other lights went green, a cop floored it, then I saw the lights. I pulled over calmly, bearing in mind the car hacked around the corner, and she came screaming over. This point, I dropped my bowels.. She asked what happened at the lights, so I showed her my fat feet, and the pedals of the car, and said my foot got stuck under the brake pedal which kept the gas on. "fine" she said, but then said she had to do 100kph to catch me! so? If you were doing the same speed as me, you wouldn't have caught me. You HAVE to go faster, laws of physics. So why is that important to us, how fast they speed, in order to catch someone going a few over?
I'm not cop bashing here, by any means, just stressing the point that cops have to go faster in order to catch up. So why tell us? It's not reflection on our speed...??
I just got a slap on the wrists, which I so rightly deserved (bad lama), and off I went..

Its only relevant if they have pursued you at that pace for a period of time and have used a certified speedo to assess your speed. The fact that they have to do 130+ in order to catch up to someone that was doing 120 is pretty ironic but is simply necessary in order to apprehend the alleged speeder.

Yeah, it's a piss-poor attempt at logic (or perhaps a cunning attempt at throwing you off and making you say something you shouldn't ;) ). Hell, even if you weren't speeding, i.e. doing 50 in a 50 zone, of course the chasing vehicle would have to go faster to catch up! Duh. Some people need to go back to basic (primary school) physics classes.

I think the only reason they didnt give you a ticket is because they couldnt prove your speed mate, i bet if they had clocked you at 70 on a radar you would be telling a different story.

Most of the police i've dealt with have been pretty sweet, as long as I'm polite and show respect.
I'd never admit to committing an offence though, even if I thought the officer wasn't about about to give me a ticket.
Fact of the matter is - I WAS speeding, and as i said, i didnt mind taking a 70-80k ticket for it. Didnt bother me owning up.
And yeah, i woulda got done if they had a radar, im sure, luckily they didnt, which was good news for me!!
Moral of the story, hope like hell the cop doesnt have a radar!!

I too think its only fair if your speeding to get a ticket, i think getting a ticket for 108kph is a bit over the top but hey.
I would own up also, but be rather vague about the speed, 99% of bike speedos read high so no point saying you were doing 120 when u were only touching on 110.

You're glad you didn't get the ticket though right?
I'd say most people only speed because they think they can get away with it.
Usually a close call with the traffic police is enough to make me think twice about what i'm doing. I don't actually need a ticket to make me slow down for a while.

Interesting - I thought all police cars (those with blue and reds anyway) had radar fitted nowadays.

A question:
Under NZ law, if a ploice officer asks you, "How fast were you going", and you admit to speeding, despite the fact that they have no proof that you were indeed speeding, can they ticket you?

They were just having fun on quiet night, winding up bikers to see if one'll run.

They can ticket you without any proof. A ticket is just an allegation. Whether a court would convict if you later denied it might be another matter. But if you had admitted it in front of a couple of witnesses you would presumably have trouble getting out of it.
There have been cases where courts have convicted becuase someone went past a policeman standing on the side of the road and the policeman said that the driver was clearly speeding.
All radar and certiifed speedo's etc do is make it easier for it to stand up in court. In law , the cop's speedo doesn't have to be certified. But, without certification, it's easy enough for a defense lawyer to say that the cop's speedo must have been wrong. So there's a rule about it being certified.
Best bet is (I think - pure guesswork here) something like " Well officer, I don't think I was speeding. I certainly am not aware I was, and I was endeavouring to ride at a legal speed. But I was concentrating my attention on the road hazards, so I can't actually say what the speedo was reading. I thought it better to watch the road rather than the speedometer" (assuming you know jolly well you were over the limit of course) . Then shut up.

Except that this allows the inference that you MAY have been speeding. Outright denial will stand up better if you defend it.
as far as i know, cops can only do 30kph above the speed limit. cos a lil while back a ambo ran ova sumone and he was in an emergency but doing over 80 in a 50 which is over the allowed 30ks and got in trouble for speeding. (dont quote me on that though)

well obviously, you don't know. policy, guidelines, and law are 3 VERY different things

of course they can ask. it's no different to asking a burglar if s/he broke into a house. it's up to you whether you answer it or not. it's common law right to be asked the question, and bill of rights not to answer it. i can just about guarantee though if you say nothing, or say 'i dunno', you'll get a ticket on what the cop thinks.

I bet this man could talk me into giving him a ticket on my best of days!
Last Saturday warned three on motorbikes heading to Beaumont plus just about wore out my headlight flasher to get a whole heap of others heading to the rally at different times to get them to slow down. (I was in a mufti).
The ones I stopped had a A1 attitude - and I had no intention of giving them a ticket but they didn't know that when I stopped them - and they looked like a Colgate ad. when they realised they weren't getting a ticket. :ride:

me and a mate were cruising down to tauranga in his car last year. We were doing 90 steady the whole way down to conserve fuel (poor students). After going through a small town (50 or 70kmh zone) a cop pulled us over and asked us if we were speeding.
My mate dropped his sacks and said "yeah i was doing about 90 back there, really sorry etc etc"
Then the cop says "oh, nah i meant about 5-10km back down the road, i think i clocked you at 160 but im not sure...." "was it you"
after a short pause "uh no officer"
its kinda sad when he is reduced to asking us if we were the car speeding (like we would have said it was us if we were). I think the deal was that he radioed it in and therefore had to follow it up...? not sure on their protocol but yeh.... :whocares:

Look, I'm sure lots of us have been stung by the police at one time or another, and okay, not every cop is a lovely fluffy bunny, but can we maybe (just a suggestion):
a) not attack those that actually are decent, and
b) avoid attacking each other at all, at least for a bit.

I believe they can. You have admitted an offence. That is the evidence that could be used against you. As I understand you do not get a reading of your rights unless you are arrested. Then you are told that any thing that you say may be used against you in a court of law aginst you.

If your speed is greater than 50 kph above the limit then you will not receive an instant fine at the raod side. You will receive a Traffic Offence Notice and be summonsed to Court, (unless you are arrested for dangerous speed). The penalty imposed is up to the Court. If you received an instant fine and were summonsed to Court for the same offence this would be double jeopardy, you can't be penalised twice for the one offence.
