Why would a bike with only 17000k on it need a top end rebuild ?
We looked at some when shopping for the boy but were warned about the high maintenance of them, so went with a DR instead :D

Our personal mechanic, been a mechanic for pretty much all his life, mid 70's now and been mucking around with and riding trail/enduro bikes for about the same length of time.

I have a 2001 XR250 Baja that has done 97,000 ks now. We just done the top end before new years, and goes like new again. When we opened it up, everything was perfect, (apart from the fact that it had worn out the barrel by about 0.3 of a mm. Looked like it had never been taken apart before. Not bad for $2000.
Pretty impressive k's for an 2001 XR as well, I would love to meet the person who put those ks on it and get them a beer, as they deserve it. Bought it with 93,000ks on it, still looks new too (apart from the new dents and scratches ive now put on it from going silly places).

My first bike was a 1986 Honda CBX250... XR250 RFVC engine with electric leg. Bought it with 37,000km on it; sold it 18 months later with 80,000km on it. Only ever did routine servicing per the book: oil, filters, sparks, valve clearances. Ran beautifully. Wore out a couple of front discs, one comstar rear wheel (wheel bearing hub flogged out), and a couple of sheepskin seatcovers (made up from the remaining good bits of old car seat covers). Broke headlight low beam elements regularly. Nada an issue with the engine. It did a lot of open-road miles as I had a 40-55km commute, and lots of touring. So yeah, not the same kind of work an XR250R would do.
1994 I was looking to get an XR250R. Most shops reckoned the heads were fine, until you started fitting big-bore or big-valve kits, then they always cracked.
