Genie became the proud owner of an 'L' plate today. It is attached to my little Ninja 250.
Here's how my day went....woke up at 2.00am to hear the rain pouring down. Didn't much care, this is Nelson the sun will come out.
Went back to sleep and awoke at 6.30am to find it's still raining. Still didn't care.
Got up and did the norm with the children and sorted some sewing, packed up the children for their trip to the pool, popped down to the bike shop and gave them my fat cheque and in return they gave me my absolutely gorgeous Rev-it Jacket, Pants, Gloves and Boots. Oh and a nice little Shoei helmet just in case.
Off to drop the children at a friends for a birthday and swimming, quick supermarket visit and bike will be all ready to go at 1.00pm.
1.45pm and where's my bike? Must not be impatient and patience is a fine virtue. I ring the shop....oh it's getting it's VTNZ thingy done and being reged. OK....another hour later and where's my bike????
Oh look here it is....oh it's so shiny and I feel like a magpie. I like shiny things.
Well, the leather gear is on, the helmet is on and it's pouring with rain...I still don't care. Out the driveway and down the road, shit where's the brake, where's the indicator, a moment of complete blondeness, breath in, breath out....ah there's the brake.......easy peasy.
Cruised around in the pouring rain, got super wet and still didn't care. Had a nice little play, getting the feel of the beast, stalled a couple of times, couple of gear mishaps and got the bike wet and dirty. Think I might like it wet and dirty!!!!
Called into to see a couple of friends, they be proud of me too.
Home and put the beast away, walked out of the garage and the sun was shining. I still don't care. I have a bike. And at the end of the day I still have a bike. I'll also have a bike tomorrow.

great story, very exciting getting a brand new machine. Good on you. A dedicated all weather rider.
When my Tbird was nearing pickup from the shop last year, there was a little bit of drizzle around. I seriously thought about leaving it there another day until it stopped. Luckily it did, and I got it home dry.
(it has since been caught in a couple of downpours)

Another super wet ride today. Sun shone all morning , 20 minutes before I'm due to take off the heavens opened. I didn't care.
Went over to Mot, hehe. I am a very naughty learner. I really struggle with staying under 70K, the bike just screams to be set free. Sounds bloody awful until you hit 90 and from then on it's just purring.
How am I going to stay legal?
And, how do I stop the fog in my helmet, I'm so excited and the heavy breathing and yeehaaaing is causing fog!
That's two days riding both in the wet, what a good way to test oneself and understand how the bike handles, we were made for one another...I'm in love!!!
To all you - been riding for years people - I so get it!!!!
For years I'd see people riding in the rain and think "Poor buggars", now it's just yeeha who gives a fuck it's riding time.

I think you got a shoei helmet - if so then you should be able to get pinlock inserts. Best thing I ever got in my arai for sure. It's like double glazing for your visor and never mists up. Just ask your bike shop.

the fogging issue is reduced by cracking the visor open one notch-usually theres a luil lever cracks it about 5mm. Ive heard of cat crap and heard its good stuff.
Tyres wise Im thinking you need to see what the mini twins and 150ss guys are using. For some reason metzler Lasertec keeps leaping into my mind as a reasonable mid range tyre.

Bigger bike, would love to, but I must wait, only a wee learner, though funny thing happened today.
Whilst out riding, I accidently went over 70kph and my bright yellow 'L' plate blew off!!!!!
Shock horror!!!!
I'm such a bad wee lass, oh well guess I will just have to ride over 70kph. Honestly, it's dangerous on the open road to ride at that speed.
Feeling rather bad as I did cause death and destruciton, killed about 7 bees or other flying insects today, someone's mummy or daddy is not coming home tonight.

Fun is really fun....went around the block today and killed more bugs. Geez those ones that smack into your legs kinda 'ouch'. the bouncing off the visor is funny. Had to dodge a couple of birds, they fly close to the wind!
Super sunny day, opened up the air vent thingy's on my jacket, hehehe, that tickled.
Nelson has gorgeous roads to ride, the scenery and the smells, not all polluted and smoggy.
And some nice friendly bikers out there, I'm not up to waving back, holding on for now. The waves are kinda cool, there are a lot of bikes on the road that I'd not noticed before, odd!!! Bad.
Riding a bike is way more than fun, it's exercise for my mind, my body and my soul.

Ya get that, I used to live at woodbourne and in the morning you could see the fog slowly oozing out of the valley, usually cleared just in time for the next lot to start forming.
Good to hear you're still loving it, lots of cool places to ride a bike around Nelson.
You really should make your way south for a bike rally, don't worry about sleeping in a tent, if you join in the KB fun then by the end of the night where you're sleeping is largely irrelevant. :apint:

OHHHHHH... theres a good chance it might happen again to, specially with you enthusiasm. TIE girl and enjoy taking ya time, tis unfortunat that often the only way to learn is the hard way, what did you do wrong, not check the stand was down all the way, hoped on and went right over (does happen) parked with the stand on or in a high/low spot, parked at a diesel pump (spiliage always watch that when choosing a pump) parked facing down hill (leave in gear if so) huh huh?... so much to think about aye and thats just parking the farking thing ;)

Just a thought, why is that we ride black bikes, wear black gear, wear a black helmet, and yet we still complain when a car driver pulls out into our path and says "Sorry mate I didn't see you."
Hate having to be the fun police, coz getting into biking 25 years ago was the best decision I have ever made.

hey we all slip up from time to time, its no biggy really just ignore the scratches for a while and when you are confident and comfortable with your bike give the odd little knick a touch up at your local panelbeater... it can be suprisingly inexpencive.

These were my thoughts too, which is why I bought a burgundy/red helmet. Not that it will make a load of difference but one never knows. Had a couple of moments in the Warehouse carpark today and think I scared them with my glaring and I wonder if they can hear my bad language??
Hey Dangerous, you sound very knowledgeable in the art of dropping the bike, would this be from your own personel experience? I'm not sure how I dropped it, wasn't the stand side and I wasn't looking at a spunky fella either! Just a blonde moment I'm thinking.
Also, don't have laces on my lovely Rev-it boots so it wasnt' that.
I did give it a little scratch which I'm rather proud of, tells me to be careful, tells me I'm quite strong (or the bike is light) and tells me bikes (and me) are unpredictable and I should always be alert!!! Geez, will be hard with this blondeness I suffer from.
I also was a very good girl today and re-attached my bright yellow 'L' plate. I'm not into paying an extra fine, (the children need feeding) and I am proud to be a learner, I did it and I did my way. (with a little help from my Master):not:
Clocked up 800 in a fortnight, would/could have done more but my responsibily as a mother has held me back. Little Black Beast is booked in for service next Thursday, wil be over 1000 by then, might pop over to Blenheim tomorrow to buy some sandals...just because I can:woohoo:

I also was a very good girl today and re-attached my bright yellow 'L' plate. I'm not into paying an extra fine, (the children need feeding) and I am proud to be a learner, I did it and I did my way. (with a little help from my Master):not:
might pop over to Blenheim tomorrow to buy some sandals...just because I can:woohoo:
You're gonna drop it at some point, might as well get it over with. I did mine not long ago thinking the side stand was down when it wasn't , red face but no real damage.
When I was on my learners, (not that long ago but I did have it for 17 years) I just hung the 'remains' of an L plate on the back, the once I was asked the confused 'I wonder when that fell off' worked OK.
Buying sandals sounds like a great reason for a ride from Nelson to Blenheim. In fact I'd suggest you don't even need a reason for that ride other than because you can.

Have had the most coolest ride to date. Hit the 1000k mark and...
Went out with a couple of the big boys today, big Harleys that is.
Oh the sound of those magnificeint machines completely drowned out the screaming of the little Ninja.
Met a couple of lovely gentlemen just out of Nelson, said I'll follow you and off we went. Nice sedate little cruise over the Whanga's along some smooth roads with no-one exceeding the speed limit and arrived at this quaint old country pub and got a beer. Oh how thirsty one gets riding.
The guys were fantastic and I felt well looked after for my first venture with other people. My confindence has grown to another level and I'm looking forward to our next outing. I felt really comfortable rding with these complete strangers (not now) and they were so cool in waiting and letting me find my feet.
One of the gentlemen didn't come into my view after one of his 'wait for Genie' stops so back i went to see what the problem was. That's a little unnerving, wondering why didn't he come.....reason battery terminal had come loose. I ask the logical question, where's your tool kit? I get two very blank faces look back at me, they don't have tool kits!
Well, the Mighty Ninja comes with one, nice little compact eveything you need kit under the pillion seat....
Fancy that, the little Japanese bike saved the big Harley from a push home.
oh and yeah, got some rather interesting waves too.....I have so many friends out there, think everyone loves the Mighty Ninja
I'm still laughing at how my Little Black Beast and it's precious tool kit saved the Harley, we'll have no ribbing of little jap bike anymore.

hahahahaha, there was definately no arse kicking at all, more a gentle lick.
The Big Harleys' were my gentlemanly escorts and they performed their task with the utmost respect and chivarly.
It was so cool to look in both my mirrors and see these big boys rumbling along behind me (one on the left and one on the right) and the sound, oh dont' get me started on the sound, sweet thunder.
and...and...then when one would roar off ahead of me and disappear from my view, yeah I got left behind a bit, then all of a sudden I'd spy one to my left, give them a cheeky Ninja toot and a wave...
and ....and....what was so funny was the waves from other bikers on the road, like I have all these new friends out there, wonder if they'd wave to me if they knew just how ugly and mental I am

It's a very sad day in my house. The garage is empty. My little Black Beast has to go to the shop for it's first service. I'm missing my beast. :weep:
Just spoke to the Dr on the way home from the gym and he tells me BB is doing well and will be ready to come home at lunch time.
The sun is also going to make an appearance at the same time. :sunny: I'm thinking BB and I will need to do some reconnecting and I think I need to go somewhere, not sure where but I'll know when I get there.
Oh and perhaps someone could inform why BB has so much trouble turning into our driveway?
(and on another note - can a Genie live without a Master? What is she if she has no Master?)

oh then my bike is a very good one, when we left the bike shop (which is 200 metres away) it took us an hour and 22 minutes to get home. We went the long long way. found some new corners to play on ('twas my wee hiccup) and some fun hills to go up and down and all around. It's so cool discovering just what BB and I can do together. have been out and had a couple of brilliant days on my beast.
raced out the driveway yesterday morning as soon as the chores were done and had no idea where i was going....didn't care.
Rode around a few suburan streets, going through the gears, couple of hill starts (little ones) then out onto the open road and over to Kina.
Wow, the views were awesome, had no idea. Can't remember when I last went down that road. That's the bestest thing about my bike, I'm going places i've not been to for nigh on 20 years. Have even found some new roads I have never travelled.
Found a bit of gravel....new experience there! Also found some sand....ahem, didn't expect that, bit more throttle and easy peasy. Parked up for a bit, tooks some pics, read my book and enjoyed just being by myself. Peace and quiet.
On the bike....ahhhhhh, a little bit of exploring and another hill start, bit of a tricky one, was steeper than normal and I really pushed myself as I tried to turn at the same time....yeah yeah, won't do that again, bike got to lay down, poor thing was tired....big muscles (glad i joined the gym) came into play and lifted wee beasty, was heavier due to the downward slope we were on. ahem, then i did complete said hillstart, talk about the tough getting going. no way was this hill stopping me doing what i wanted.
back out onto the open raod and talk about a silly women driver, was following her and i got this uncomfortable feeling with her dodgy driving, anyway she slowed, indicated to turn right, ok i'll go on her left, hang on her passenger is pointing left to that road, f...k, ok more throttle, i'm gone and yes she decides she wanting to turn left not right!!! I had some rather quick thinking going on and was very proud of myself for anticipating her actions thus, keeping myself safe. Onwards I travel and find myself heading home again. Bike decides we're not ready yet so we went the long long way home. I am really having trouble bringing my bike back home. It's rather disappointing, in fact, extremely so. why does the fun have to finish!
Why, because then there's always the next day for more adventures.....like today. a lesson with Karel Pavich - Prorider here in Nelson. Nelson is blessed to have such an amazing women here. She is so enthusiastic in sharing what she knows. I love the sound of her voice and the way she explains it makes such perfect sense. Today we spent 90 minutes getting me in the whole co-ordination thing between, clutch, throtlle, front and back brakes all working in unison. I manage it ok on the road without thinking, but to think about it...tottally different story. I love becoming more aware of what I am actually doing. Can't wait until tomorrow when I can go out and put it all into practice. Hill starts wil be easier! Having another lesson with Karel in a couple of weeks then wil travel with her and others to Ruapuna on April 3/4/5 for even more learning.
I love to learn, I love a challenge and I must remember to always look where I am going! :innocent:
and not just when I'm on my bike.

My bike opens up new doors everyday.
Met a lovely gentleman today in the carpark outside the meat market. He was admiring my bike. Was very surprised to hear me say it was an itty bitty 250. hehe, it's all that plastic.
Anyway, he asked me how many cylinders, one or two, how the f..k would i know, he just laughed at my blank face and I said, i dont' know I turn the key on, press the button and i'm away. not really cared about the how and what, which has got me thinking.
I am cared, am very interested in how it works. Never had an interest in how the dumb car works but the bike, different story.
Right, think I may look into becoing a motorcycle mechanic. I need a new career and I kinda like to get dirty. My children are at school, I need to be looking at what I wish to do and I so don't want to go back to being the admin lady. It has given me more food for thought and when that happens I have even more to love my bike for.

True .... but at least she will know what all the bits are called.
But she will be able to adjust the chain ... change a blown indicator/headlight bulb ... check oil/brake fluid levels .... replace broken levers and other bits ...
There's still a few things she CAN do without affecting the warranty ...

Now is that an impossibility, I think it might be but one surely needs to be super aware of so much when out playing on one's bike.
Had me another interesting ride today, travelling through Wakefield when all of a sudden BANG! Like big bang right on my arse, car pulling out in front of the vehicle I was in front of! Lucky lucky me. Was one of those big 4x4 trucks things and it got a hell of smash, glad it was him and not me. Did I notice the little white car about to pull out? No I didn't. There is so much to be aware of and there is so much to see. I was watching the cars pulling out from the garage over the road and coming into the traffic flow in front of me. Another lesson learnt. The more i learn the more I want to learn!!!
Well, after that wee moment (I went and took a pic of smashed up truck) I continued on my merry way traversing mountains and discovering new lands. Did you know the hawk population out the south of Nelson is flourishing. Saw about15, dont see them in the car but the whole world is there to be seen on the bike.
Ahhhh, the bike. What a little pearler. Purring away like a contented pussy cat. Seriously, it's sounder so much sweeter and is starting to really open up for me. Or is it me opening up???? Starting to trust myself a hell of lot more too. The little things I learnt on Tuesday with Karel are also coming into pllay. Feeling so much more in control and steadier.
Can't wait until tomorrow's adventure with Mr Peasea and his mate Harley. :yeah:
the pic is up Korere down some new road I'd never been on before.....it was a fun road!!!!!

There is so much to be aware of, when in traffic, always have an 'out-route'.
Always better to be out in front away from pending danger, but that cant always be the case.
To the left is pehaps the better option to take if things get ugly.

In this case I was very fortunate to be out front. Nothing quite like hearing that big BANG and looking in my mirror to see the vehicle behind me smashed across the road. Yep it was a moment. I've had about 3 of those 'moments' where I have seen just how different it could have been, oh but for a second!!!!!
Another :yes:good thing about that happening was that when I turned the corner to go back and take a pic - for prosterity - there was my sweetest and most dearest great aunt, love her dearly and haven't seen her for a couple of weeks so not only was I still in one piece I got a kiss and hug and she got to see me special new toy!!!!

Imagine you are invisible to other road users (brains don't come out of auto mode unless a threat is percieved. Bikes being relatively small don't often register as a potential threat). Try imagine what you will do in different scenarios like where your outroute would be , what you would do if that car did a U-turn in front of you, etc, etc as it can buy you valauble time if such an event actually occurs. Also once you are a little more comfortable with your riding do a Ride right ,ride safe course to get your emergency braking and countersteering sorted and practice ever so often when safe to do so , so that they become instinctive.
Take care and have fun.

Oh what fun I had.
Yesterday young Peasea and I met up out the beginning of open road land and we went out to play.
Oh what fun.
It was all backwards for me, I had travelled the road but coming from the other direction. It is so cool (for me) to follow someone, I see them do the corners and know - yes - I can do that corner too. He lead me a right merry dance and we even found another new road.....there are so many around here!!! This one had some nice corners and if it weren't for the gum nuts and gum leaves all over the road I think I would have gone a little faster hehe. Then we found some gravel, I'm not scared! Was a little but hey I did it. was rather interesting to see just how much that skinny little tyre wiggles, had to make sure I didn't.
Onto some familiar roads again and we found a nice building that sold beer so we had us a nice cool one. It was Friday beer o'clock time. ahhhhhhh, went down a right treat and then we had the discussion on the learner licence, learner must not have any alcohol whilst on the bike, but hey in my car I can have 2. Kinda weird but hey that's the law, so once again I have been bad and broken the law. I seem to be breaking a few of those lately. It's this bike, it is such a bad influence on me. It releases this excitement and this amazing energy that has been dormant for far to long and I think to restrain that energy is more of a crime!!!! If you know what I mean...
After that tasty wee beer we're mounted and away again, loads of commuter traffic between Nelson and Motueka at the time of the day, I'm usually in the kitchen at the time so had no idea, glad I don't live in Auckland. And glad I was on my bike, my bike!!!!
Got myself on my home road and guess what? Bloody bike wouldn't come in the driveway until we'd had one more blat around the motorway!!! Jolly good bike I've bought.

Don't worry Genie, one beer wont get you unless your under 20.....
"If you're under 20 years old, the legal alcohol limit is 150 micrograms per litre of breath and 30 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood. This is effectively a zero limit – consuming one drink will mean you can be charged with drink driving.
If you're 20 years or older, the legal alcohol limit is 400 micrograms per litre of breath and 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood."

Spent yesterday showing young Grubber around the sights of Nelson. Wow, this place is awesome. I think as we get older we really do appreciate the simple things in life. Like how the sun shines down on the crystal clear water that has just sprung forth from the side of the mountain. We went and found the Source of the Riwaka River at the base of the Takaka hill. Absolutely amazingly beautiful.
We met up down at the Tahuna Motorcamp about 9.15am and set off in the direction of Motueka. Was a stunning day with clear skies and the traffic wasn't too heavy. Made our way over to Ruby Bay, man that place is beautiful. The sea was the most gorgeous blue. Couple of seagulls munching down on a dead fish, nature at it's best. On the road and wee detour out to Kina, oh that place is gorgoues. The sea seems to change to this deeper blue, same sea, different location. We carried on through Mouteka (really main street is the worst raod in NZ) and zipped around a few hills and made our way to Kaiteriteri. That place is sooooo nice. Shame it's kinda got all commericial but it still retains it's naturalness. Had some yummy food for lunch and then we popped through the hills to Marahau. I haven't been over there for about 12 years and that place has changed. I'm pleased the tide was high as it's pretty yuk at low tide. Grubber got to see it at it's best.
Started to amble our way back home when I clicked about the Source of the Riwaka River. Had been there as a child and thought it so boring. It's not. It is stunning. Great little road and I could really feel my confidence start to grow. Loved that quiet wee twisty road. With the wee walk at the end it is a place I shall be going to again very soon. Filled up my water bottle while we were there and the water is soooooo nice. Real water, fresh, new virgin water.
On the bikes and a another new road was found, began to wonder just where I was leading this fellow when I finally found a familiar road. Phew. After a couple a mishaps (wrong turns) I found the road I was looking for, Old Coach Road, the veiws over Nelson and the bay are phenominal. Stunning, amazing, awesome and a lovely wee twisty raod. I'm beginning to get the gist of these twisties and learning to trust just what me and the bike can do.
Anyway, here we are parked up admiring this view and I check out the time, I have 10 minutes to get home for the kidlets. Yep, fast trip home, oh I love my bike. Gives me what I want just when I need it.
Home we got, had a cool beer and then Grubber set off to get a good night's sleep before he starts the rest of his south island tour. Safe and happy travels.
His parting words were to explain to me just what Chicken Strips were.....hmmmmmm. I did wonder. I have them. I don't want them. Apparently they're not too bad, but they're there. Kinda makes me feel like I have wrinkles. Don't want them either. Guess I best get out there and wipe them away. Not with sandpaper.
Do I hear Ruapuna calling me down for Easter with Karel. I think it's screaming at me

You can have chicken stripes and ride fast, its about body position... some lean the bike well over to a dangerous angle yet sit up right on the bike, ok no stripes but they are about to can out.
Others that have a little chook stripe ride fast and corner quick.. because they keep the bike at a safe lean angle and use their body to corner, leaves a much safer margine for a cock up.
Chicken stripes... over rated.

Hehe, next time I'm in Marahau, well I know it won't be another 10 or so years......but there is so many undiscovered roads and I must discover them.
I worked out this morning that I'm averaging 416k's a week on my bike, unbelievable, think I am making up for so much lost time.

Agreed!. Was just something else to learn what's what in terminology as such. I got quarter inch round mine and i manage to get round corners pretty fine.
Just for the record...if anyone is coming into the Nelson region....Genie is the perfect host and great tour guide. Recomended!
She finished the day whipping round corners pretty damn good herself to be fair.

Well it's been an interesting week. Yesterday the wee beast made it to 3000. Was a momentous occassion for which I pulled over and snapped a pic. Felt like my baby had just learnt to crawl. It's the mother in me.
Got myself, well the bike, sorted for it's first lube. I'd asked a friend to pop over and assist and being the impatient and can-do-it myself bitch that I am (don't need anyone)...I did it. Don't need 2 people at all. Just sprayed stuff on, moved bike forward, sprayed more, moved forward and continued until chain was lubed but not over lubed. Just nicely coated, and, they make the stuff smell so nice.
Today when the beast had a bath I could smell the juicey aroma of chain lube. I'm addicted - again. Even more to love about my bike. Must go clock up another 500k's just so I can do it again.
Took myself out earlier today, didn't stay out long. The wind was whippy fiercely around my body and I decided me and the bike just don't weigh enough to combat that strength of wind. Was moving a bit over the road, the gusts were rather strong and I'm rather weak. I don't have the experience to carry off riding in a hurricane. (exaggeration) Will save myself and my skin, and my bike for a less windy day.

Today I rode my bike.
You can take your bike out on the road and go for a ride..but does on always "ride" their bike. I think not. There's a definite difference.
Today I rode and today I got pinged. There is a moment when I ride that I all of a sudden find myself breathing. It's a moment when my perspective changes...a moment I like. I went past that today.
Popped upon my bike this morning and decided I would put some petrol in the tank. I like to put petrol in the tank, the smell....ahhhhh, once was a Petrol Pump Attentant, best job. breathing again.
Seeing as my tank was 3/4 full I needed to travel some distance. To go further afield than before. I would pop up to Murchison. Bloody hell, talk about some shit drivers and a couple of clever clogs's on a little red duc's, swift movements.
Anyway, had a lovely meandering afternoon where my brain remained sharpe and my body got really comfortable. Like I've been comfortable before, but this went further than that. I "rode" my bike......amazing!!! Seriously, I went further in my ability, like when a child starts running, being free....
Amazing ride home after filling the tank, I was rather swift myself. I so got "into" the corners....hmmmmm,
Home now, and, well, just as I pull into my driveway Mr Policeman who is parked in Bus Stop, blips his lights and siren, I glide down my driveway, turn around and there he is beside me. Hmmmm, ooops.
Yep, I had accellerated down the last wee bit of road i had to play on, my bike was naughty, the last bit of freedom.......... and now I have a $170.00 fine!!!

Most accidents/incidents happen within 10 km's of home. Brain is on "home" things ... Untill you have both feet on the ground (off the bike) at home, keep the concentration. It is hard sometimes ... things you have to do and all that. But you will live longer ...

It's actually within Three K's of home and the accidents are the worst ones, mainly because as FJ said the drivers are well and truely in HOME Mode.
Take care out there Genie, it's good to hear you are doing well, as for mr Plod, well the bugger could have given you a warning, but that is another story.
Just keep your wits about you at all times and remember to keep in ride mode until you GET Home, that means keeping a wary eye out for nasty ol mr Plods too now.

OH it was like my last little burst of freedom before coming home, not something I normally do and I was rather fortunate, no 'L' plate = $100.00 and exceeding the conditions of my licence $???, was rather amusing. He was parked straight across the road from my house and as I came around the corner he blipped me, he had just sorted a car crash that happened and after he gave me my ticket he got another two drivers. Good day for him.
About to cruise out for a small ride this morning, got to fit them in where I can, think I might go to the top of the Takaka Hill, awesome day to be on top of the world.

Hey genie, secret to windy days is to completly relax your arms, grip the tank tight with your thighs & if you have to just lean on the wind like you're in a long corner. I love riding in dodgy conditions, reckon it adds something to the whole experience of two wheels, add a bit of rain to the wind if you're looking for a bit more excitement. Just remember 'light hands, strong thighs'.

and, to Mr Hypobru, you are so right. I have since been out in some rather unsavoury weather and am pleased I started at the gym way before I got the bike, thighs are very strong as are arms....just as well, for when I dropped my P&J on a downward slope once the picking up was done with ease! The day I was mentioning in my post was a tad too windy fo me to walk in let alone ride the bike...I have also heard that sticking a knee out also helps with balance in gusty situations.

i have same prob with fogging and was told...get cat crap...not cat shit...cat crap. Still not sure if they were joking!!! but told it is good!!
nope I have tried it-0 it works for about three commutes, and then you need to apply more. You get a sticker with glue around the edges only, that sticks to the inside of your visor. It acts as a double glazing, and does not fog up at all.
About $20, easy to install. Mine has lasted a year already.

have been out and had a couple of brilliant days on my beast.
raced out the driveway yesterday morning as soon as the chores were done and had no idea where i was going....didn't care.
Check out the link on youtube to show you how to pick up the bike with minimum effort. sound slike it could come in handy.
When you do hillstarts, use the back brake like a handbrake. Let clutch out until it starts taking, and release foot brake.

That's the way genie, the training with karel will really work wonders on your riding. Don't know about spending good riding time in a book tho. Hope the bike wasn't too upset about being dropped, but don't be too bothered, most people do that sort of thing in the early days & now you know what not to do next time ( I reckon turning around on an uphill is easier if you roll back a bit and turn the bike across the slope i.e. 3 point turn ).

ahh, interesting you should say that...i have read the thread on here but that kinda just confused me more, but then again I am blonde and I'm an action girl not a read it and understand....
Countersteering should be intuitive and automatic. It's just that many don't know what it is until it is explained and they go for another ride and realise that is what they've been doing all along. Once you realise it, you can then consciously adjust your lines and riding style more effectively. IMHO
What it basically is, is you "steer left" to turn right. Pushing forward on the right bar, pulling back on the left bar, tips the bike to the right and turns it to the right. It should be instinctive.
aha...thanks...i do get it and i do do it but when it's written down......it's far too complicated for my brain to process.
Like you said, it's an intuitive action, some are blessed with being born with it and others learn it....
Given that you're not new to riding bikes just new to being licenced on the road, you've done some rider training, and you've been successfully going around corners you or your bike are doing it already.
It's a pretty simple physical reaction, if you lean the bike using your weight then the bars will turn, if you turn the bars the opposite way the bike will lean. The danger of focusing too much on countersteering is that you can end up sitting upright on the bike using the bars to lean it in, rather than putting your weight in the right place on the bike and letting it turn in naturally. It is useful when you need to lean the bike in further into a corner reasonably quickly, but it's a lot easier on the arms to do it in combination with everything else.
aha...thanks...i do get it and i do do it but when it's written down......it's far too complicated for my brain to process.
Like you said, it's an intuitive action, some are blessed with being born with it and others learn it....

Well, it's been a very long time since Monday's short and sweet ride, but, I finally had a wee window open to get out for a quick blat around the countryside.
What a difference in riding. I've been watching Twist of the Wrist (like the throttle control bit) and some american riding school vids.
Good wee bit of homework.
Today's ride was over some really familiar roads just to see how much my riding has improved. Immensely, I've come along in leaps and bounds and some of those corners that the snail overtook me on, well I ran the little fella over! Seriously, this whole body just rode the bike. Every part of me from my toes to the tips of my fingers...rode that bike today. Was absolutley, positively awesomely amazing!!! Blowing my own trumpet here, but hell I'm good.
Settle girl, I know I'm not the world's best but I have come a very long way in a short time. Won't get a chance to get out again until monday but today's wee ride wil keep me going, that bike is my medicine, that bike...well that bike has done more for me than any man, women, child has done in my entire life.
I love my bike

Me and the bike went out to play today. And I mean 'play'. I've got to a point where my riding has got a little boring and I thought it might be appropriate for me to start pushing me and the bike just that little bit more. Oh Wow. What fun. I was using my body to lean us over more and push us around the corner. Removal of chicken strips - maybe? But hey that was so much fun..started to see just what I can do and I like it. I also started to play around with my legs and seeing how the bike responds to my shifts in weight and throwing a leg out wide....interesting and was rather annoyed when it was home time again....next week i shall be out there asap.
Today is also the 6 month anniversary of me becoming a non-smoker and the 3 month anniversary of the purchase of my little black beast. What better way to celebrate than to get out there and push a boundary or two!!! Have been watchign some very educational vids (thanks Mr DMNTD) and today I put some of that into practice. Throttle control...way way easy and so much fun...I thought I had it good before but now...and then next time will be even betterer. This is so much fun and I'm wishing I coudl get my arse off for one of Karel's training days, just got my email from her and she will be having some more in august...hope i can swing it this time round...crossing fingers, legs and toes!!
Well I'm off for some more celebrating...party time tonight so bes ti go get the dress-ups sorted..it's a 'P' party

Its awesome innit?
Just don tmake the fault of thinking you are on a track. there are just too many unexpecteds on the road. Rather focus on getting your technique right for when you hit the track.
try this:
When you go around the corner (at moderate speed), try and balance yourself exactly against the cornering forces, so that you are sitting perched atop the bike in a corner, without having to hang or push against anything. Thats an amazing feeling- being on that kind of harmony with the corner and bike. And try and transition smoothly from balanced lean one side to a balanced lean the other side.
I found that if I open up my inside hip (i.e. push it slightly back at the inside side so that I am sitting slightly skew on the saddle), this allows me to bend my torso over and to the side without twisting my back into a helix, and without having to move my bum too much off the side of the seat. It results in a comfortable, balanced seating position where you feel in control and in harmony.
use it, dont use it....
PS Oh and keep your arms loose and relaxed.

Hey well done Genie, sounds like its got ya good n proper. Anyway when you start "pushing" can be when you start "crashing" so props to ya for doing the training thing.
Me on the other hand learnt the hard way when there wasn't a thing called "training".
At 18 going fanging into a sweeper all crossed up finding I was in a 'I got myself into it but how the hell do I get out of it' sort of hinge in the middle situation on the old Z1000, wasn't the best for the nerves, :shit:but it did make life interesting. Bikes have moved on a bit since then and the 'prilia looks after me now and fills in the bits wot I can't do for myself.. Have fun tonight.

I'll second that one Genie. You're sounding about as enthusiastic as I was when I got my 1st bike. Wasn't long before one of those 'boundaries' pushed back & I ended up with a front tyre in the gravel on the wrong side of the road, too fast into a 35km corner and not doing the right thing ( shit myself & looked away from where I should have been looking). I grew up nearby where this happened, but once I'd got the bike back on it's wheels & restarted I realised I could'nt think of how to get home. Big scuff on my helmet when I got it off & once I did remember the way back, ($1000 damage to my bike, new helmet, new jacket) Lucky break, I reckon I got off lightly. This is the one that gets most of us sooner or later. But I learned a valuable lesson, "know your boundaries & stay within them". That was a little bike too so I'd hate for my 1000cc V twin to slap my onto the road.
That might make me sound like a wuss, but hey now I don't have that 'survival reaction' anymore & can keep looking into the corner & push on the inside bar if things go a bit wrong. Some of the other guys replying to your posts are way more qualified than me to comment, but I'd say you need somewhere around 30 to 40K on the road before an average rider can dominate what Keith Code calls the survival reactions.
On a brighter note, I thought of you the other day when I went on a 950km single day ride in the pissing rain. Brilliant roads, dodgy as hell conditions, you'd have loved it.

yeeeha...'tis my lucky day.
Have just put my trusty steed away in the garage....lucky!
Why you may ask...well as the post above mentions one of those corners came along for me. My brain just completely froze...way before the corner...way before i even would have started turning....i just knew i wasnt' going too!!
eeeeeek wet, grotty day....no sunshine, wet road and one of those corners and what happens....Genie's brain shuts down.
Far too much shit going through it and when I needed to use it...I stalled.
'twas a moment that went ever so slow, you know the ones.
I must start at the beginning.
Today I stepped out of my comfort zone. Decided I would join the local bike shop for their little group ride. Well fuck. I'm not the best in groups. never have been, but, i decided to bite the bullet and go make some new friends. It's not that easy you know. some just aren't open to it. Being the only chick amongst 10 fellas is intimidating on it's own, throw in some motorbikes and well, little Miss Genie was not comfortable.
After a wee gifting of spot prizes (I got a t-shirt), we started up our motorcycles. some rather nice ones too. I had me an audience, some little lads from school had shown up and wow, there was Karen and she has a motorbike, I was famous. not. off we rode with waves from the young school lads. Me, i'm trying to be last but some gentlemen decided to let me go first. Not good for me. Intimidation, plus i had the feeling they were watching my arse (as someone else I know has done this) so i was extremely self conscious. breathing....all good, not really.
the ride was familiar roads for me...the Moutere Highway then back through to Mapua, a ride i have done about 3 times a week for the last 4 months. nothing new there...but having 4 or 5 men sitting on my arse...fuck that....please overtake me. My lines were all out, i was so uncomfortble on my bike and i knew i should forget they were there and just ride my ride. I tried but obviously not hard enough.
the corner....i'm surprised i didn't get the shakes afterwards. I completely just did not turn and then there was gravel and a raging river (where did that come from). well, little Miss Genie really rode her bike!!! No freaking way was I going to scratch my bike, no way was I going to drop it, no way was I going to be hurt, I have a party tonight (new halterneck catsuit to wear), no way was I crashing. Hell, i'm a detemined wee lass when I need to be. Just the other day I was having a chat with a friend and we talked about my needing new tryes for my bike and we discussed the chances of me crashing, I answered that "no, i was not going to crash", he told me that was arrogant of me...maybe. But hell, if i can avoid it i will. I kept my bike steady, I kept both of us upright, guided gently through the wobbles, the slides, the flicking of the rear end and stopped safely. The man behind me could not believe I kept it up and he said I did good. No i didn't, i did really bad, that situation should never have happened. I need to be sharper, I need to be more aware, I need to leave the bullshit at home, my brain needs to be focused on my ride not some asshole bullshit that I can't control.
I can't wait until the next group ride....in fact i could go now if i didnt' have a party to go to....next time I won't let intimidation get to me. I need to find my comfort zone when around other riders, those lights in my mirror are ok. It was a moment and I'm thankful for my determination for I couldl be in a hospital bed right. My bike could be broken...I was going about 70k, it could have been nasty. It wasn't, I'm here, I'm fine and I'm thankful. Tomorrow I wil reflect more on this situation and on Monday I shall go ride that road again and I shall do it right.
For now I shall have a spa to warm up and then get ready to go and live.

Yep Genie, sound like you learnt another lesson there in a hurry. I think pilots refer to it as "just fly the fkn plane". When distraction sets in, like when one is fretting about a pack of pervs on your tail then the mind isnt fully on the job and crashing comes easy, as you found out. Its only normal, and until you can fang without thinking then your gonna need to make yourself keep focussed.
Fact of life, hairy bikers are always gonna politely study ones posterior luv,:shake:, so just forget about that (easy for me to say I suppose) dont worry, and enjoy the ride. Same for anything else that could take your mind off the task at hand.

yes, you would be correct. all muscles within me came to the party. thankfully.
I have read many threads concerning 'group rides' so i did know that this behaviour is common. OMG, that makes me common, here was me thinking i'm a princess and above all that. nice to be humbled.
Have had spa and am feeling somewhat 'stunned' by this afternoons events. actually the whole day had been interesting.
I'm now off to not one but two parties, outfit is superb now for makeup. I shall go out this evening and celebrate not only the birth of two special people but also that I walk, I breath, I live. I do sound over the top with it all, but hell, it really could have been so different.
I have much to learn.

You got lucky that time genie, well done just the same. Maybe it's partly your fault for wearing leathers ;) but those boy's should not have put a 'newbie' at the front. it takes a bit of experience before that feeling of holding everyone up goes away & you can be fully focused on what's happening in front & not concerned about the bikes behind you. Anyway if you thought all they were doing was checking you out you could have gone at 5kph & they probably still wouldn't have taken the lead off you. Don't give up on the group rides tho cause that's where you tend to learn these hard lessons, & don't be afraid to sit & wait til someone else takes the lead, mid pack is probably the best spot to ride anyway.
Good story, keep it up. Take care of yourself.

Yup, riding is not a place for ego. You have to be thinking about the NOW. You have to let the ingrained training and muscle memory take over, to get into the zen and be focussed on nothing but the corner. You should have been focussing on the perfecton of your technique. Not your bum (nice as it may well be). Or else you will end up kissing it good bye. (And ditto for the riders behind you).

Bloody glad you kept it upright and got home safe and completely together.
You take your best game with you everytime you go out on your bike.If you can't, then take the Cage!
Simple as that Genie.
Group rides are best when the newest members are invited to "ride their OWN RIDE" and put just in front of the TEC who 's only concern is making sure that they stay in front of him and on the road at whatever safe speed they are doing.
Don't be put off, my wifey went out on her little bike last night with the South Auckland Street Skills Mob, her first time on her own with a group of unknown riders(who looked after her very well) and the first time riding at night since she was brought down by those scum bags and their entire trailer load of car parts strewn throughout the Hunua Gorge.( I have not forgotten them, God won't help them when i cathc em up)
She came home happy as a pig in shit and told me me wanted a Harley!@#$%
Apparently some bugger had let her sit on a 1600cc Jobby and now i can't get em out of her head.
Point is though, take care out there, don't ever push the envelope too far, even if you know how, it's just not worth the risk.
Hope the parties were a blast and that you had a great time.
Get out for a ride soon and clear the cob webs and make sure you and your bike are still one.
Big safe Hugs mate.

Ok for a start....they WERE looking at your arse! Why wouldn't they, i've seen it and it is worth a look. Sounds to me like you got yourself out of trouble ok and that is a good thing. some people would have just ridin it to hell and ended up on their arse in the ditch. My guess is, your getting it all sorted nowadays.
I think i need to come down there for another tour and see how your doin these days. Sounds like all is going well to me. If it wasn't, this thread would read a whole lot different to this.
Keep at it Genie and test those boundaries every chance you get. Just do it within the required capacity to keep you alive!

It's been ages since I've added some real fun. Tried the other day but damn site kept timing out and I lost my ramble twice. Needless to say I gave up!
Have been out having some fun with my wee Black Beast but feel like I'm stuck. I'm thinking of sorting myself to shoot down to Chch for the Prorider Track Day on Oct 4, just need to sort the children, duct tape???
Have just come home via the bike shop and bought myself another piece of sexy Revit gear, this time it's the rain/wind coat thing, bought the pants the other week and WOW, they're awesome and they don't make my arse look big! How many chicks can say that!
While I was in there the lovley salesmen and I were chatting about the next group ride, I'm going. Have decided that even though my first was a disaster I can only improve. We also chattted about an after market pipe for my bike and guess what? They had this Ninja in there with this Screaming Demon pipe on it....wow it just looks so good. Made him start it up for me to hear and my bike is now going to get a present. Actually we both willl be as I'm about to go sit my 6R and when I pass the new pipe, oh and a thing that sits on where the pillian would sit, will be pressies for both of us.
I've learnt that there is so much fun to be had on and off my bike. I've loved all the retail therapy I've done lately, got some new Revit thermal gear as well.
I think that by next winter I'll have be some of those heated hand grips too!!!! For some reason my two :motu: on each hand go all white and numb??? But only those fingers do it:yes:

The vibes through the bars do that, esp if you tend to grip a wee bit tighter with those fingers. Try experimenting on your next ride, changing your grip and position of your hands on the bars. My old GSX600F was bad for making my right hand go numb as the throttle was looser than the left grip and vibrated more. It's the fine, high-frequency vibes that do it and the wee Ninja's rev pretty high.
Glad you're enjoying the "therapy"...

Apparently you can get Arnica drops you put under your tongue, Homeopaths recomend them. I don't know if they work, but they're supposed to calm the nerves. Personally I haven't found anything that calms mine... Mind you my daily massage is very calming, I told my caregiver she'll have me purring....

Took off today for a blat to clear my head.
It was amazing.
I had so much focus in my riding, so much determination, my lines...well I can't say perfect but they were brilliant.
Throttle control...oh yeah, I really thought about the corners before I approached them and the need for braking was elimanated on many corners. A couple that I have always approached over cautious became easy...my mind was that much in focus. Not sure if I've ever ridden that well.
Went over the Moutere Highway, very little traffic on the road....it was mine and I took full advantage of that fact. I used my whole body ... my mind was so dedicated to each twist and turn in the road.
As I've travelled that road so much over the last 7 months I've learnt where the little ruts are, where the road has some unsavoury bumps, things I've never cared about in the car but on my bike the road just takes on a whole new meaning. I was pleased to note that one corner that had a nasty big gouge has been fixed.
That ride was a good one....it was quick, it was hard and I used my body so well.....roll on October 4 when I can head to Chch for a training day and get even better. I'm sure that between now and then I will have improved that much more, but today's ride had something 'special' about it that I've not experienced before.
I love my bike and what it gives me.

Had a really good ride last night after having a shitty week. Pushed the bike and myself to the maximum. Just as well I own a 250cc otherwise I'd be going much faster! :P

My sentiments exactly! Sometimes I'd like a little more power when overtaking and coming out of some corners, but overall, I'm very happy staying on a baby bike.

Thanks, you darlings....funny thing is I'm quite restrained.....have loads more I could add but wouldn't wish to bore anyone.....best I get out for another ride tomorrow so I can write more, this time I will remember my new shiny Revit Rain/Wind gear....was a tad chilly today. But, that just served to induce me to ride harder....keep my body going, to move past the point of cold and just "ride".....mind over matter and the mind won! Fingers are another story, those:motu: really played up today!

Good to hear you are loving your bike again Genie, you were sounding a bit flat on it for a while, it's a bugger when work and life and stuff prevents you from enjoying your bike. A bit of retail therapy can work wonders though.

Dear Tamarillo,
It is my understanding that this weekend you shall be doing a whole lot of riding and that will more than make up for it.
Who am I kidding...lies.
I understand your addiction for I too am afflicted. What it means is that when we do get the opportunity to ride we do it well and 'feel' every second of the ride.
I had hoped to go out riding today...but, alas, I'm feeling poorly. Seems I have not recovered fully from my illness, buggar. I need to rest....I better be betterer by Sunday!

Cheers there Mr Neels, it does still feel like a new toy and every time I glance upon it's shear beauty I grin in delight. I did go a bit flat....was more personal than the bike...the bike has lifte me up again. And of course your wife would want to take her new jacket out for a ride. Why do you sound surprised by that? she certainly didn't spend good money on it so it coudl sit in the wardrobe.

It seemed only right after I got myself a shiny black italian toy to play with that she got a nice new jacket to wear on the back of it. I went out to play today.
Well not so much play, as going in search of the wet stuff falling from the sky.
I awoke this morning to heavy rain and thought...yeeha, I'm going for a ride and I shall see just how good my new little rain jacket and pants are.
By the time mother arrived and took the boys and then a further 10 minutes to put everything on (time to warm the bike) the rain had stopped.
I felt so ripped off! Can you believe it.....what idiot gets disappointed because the rain stops! Geez, some people are right bonkers.
Anyway, I was off, ....went for a wee jaunt around some streets in suburbia, not liking all these new houses with no privacy and all looking the same....over that real fast.
Off to find some country roads. Think I did what is commonly known as "threading", not much opportunity for that malarkie around here, the roads just dont' have that much traffic, but hell, it was rather invigorating!
Got the Genie juices flowing and made for a fun wee time.
All of a sudden my body kicked into some high gear and the flow hit. Is that what they call the 'zone'?
Whatever, every part of me rode my bike.
Most wonderful thing was the rain started, it poured down, was I cold, no, was I wet...NO! It worked, I'm very pleased about that.
Mission accomplished so home to wash my bike, re-attach the "L" for Thursday's mission and give the The Little Beast a well deserved polish.

Ha ha! Yup! I had a BSA 350 B31 but it was problematic to start, (!), so borrowed my co-worker's C50 Honda. The nice Policeman followed me up the street, walking on the footpath while I rode through an intersection, did a u-turn and then went down a short side street to do a hill start. Unfortunately the wee Honda didn't have the power to do the hill start so I had to paddle-foot it up!
Then he just asked me questions until I got 5 right, gave me my full licence! :sunny:
