I guess seeing as im on a 250 at the moment, I shall join in tomorrow. I can also take up the Tail End Charlie position as my gearing will only let me get up to just over 80kph. If anyone wants to turn up early give me a bell as I finish work in the hutt at 5pm, so I usually find myself riding around aimlessly until 6 when everyone starts turning up.

My bike stalled when going around a corner and up a steep hill - gear too high
So when it stalled it started tilting over immediately and I couldn't stop it. Managed to lay it down gently but the weight of the bike broke the clutch lever. No damage to the bike except for broken lever.
Got a call from the workshop they had to order a lever from Auckland and it'll be here on Thursday.
So I'll see you all next week, as I am bikeless for the next couple of days.
Me and my bloody luck.

Bugger mate, thats a shame. At least it didn't land on you.
Cheers all for another fun ride, great to meet more of you.
Two cruisers last week, four this week, by my calculations, there should be eight next week. Awesome!

Yup,
was a good relaxed ride. It was very good to meet everyone - very friendly group. Will definitely be going to some more of these rides.
Stunning sunset on the way back through Petone as well (just managed to get home before it got too dark for my visor).

Yeah the red skys over wellington looked absolutely stunning. Almost stopped to take a photo however realised my 5 megapixel camera on my phone probably wouldn't do it justice.
Was getting a bit dark for my tinted visor so had to ride back in with it up. Only got hit in the face once by a bug :slap: Will have to remember to switch it out for next Tuesday.

I recommend bringing a spare clear visor for the ride home (slip it around your side inside the jacket above the waist.... fits well there) or sunglasses and fit a clear visor for the whole ride.
Good to see more riders there.

Great ride every one, thanks. And thanks again to buck Buck. These rides are most enjoyable. Great people, great destinations, and as we all discovered the most stunning sunsets I have ever seen! Wow - that was awesome.
Thought it was a really good turn out last night. It's so good to have something like this to look forward to every week.
See you all next week.

Be careful on the Makara ride guys. Its a tricky wee road. There are a few corners which are quite deceptive and the gorge between Makara Beach Turnoff and Johnsonville is very narrow, and a lot of users of this road are 4x4.It is a nice ride though!

Thanks for that BMWST? How have you been since we did the Advanced Refresher Riding Course? May see you on the Tuesday ride perhaps.
You are quite right about the Makara ride and hence my encouragement for riders to do the run with another rider. There will be briefings next Tuesday, and also if there is a small group interested to ride on the weekend I will brief then as well.

Yes it's an interesting road alright, narrow, gravel, unpredictable traffic crossing over your side etc. Some very fine rural scenery too. Used to drive out there flat out to catch poachers as they left the beach. Scary road at speed that's for sure. Saw a guy drop his porsche off the road once.... one has to laugh given the type of car it was and the deflated ego of the driver ;)

Decided to take the long route home tonight and go through Makara for a bit of fun.
Heads up of two things to be aware of.
Road works going on just before the hill up to karori - so lots of sticky tar around.
Also, a small rock slide has been around for about a week. it's just before the second single lane bridge (on the really twisty bit with new tarmac) coming from johnsonville. Quite a few largish rocks over the road from this. You can pick your way through easily if not going too fast.
Still was a good ride - just letting everyone know as the rockfall can come as a bit of a surprise (I expected it to be gone so it caught me out again).

Makara is a great ride and that's good advice to test ride it first. The first time I rode it I found that some of those corners a bit of a fright. I was happy to sit behind a car for a lot of the way to slow anyone coming the otherway. Also be careful if you come across a cyclist coming the other way on a blind corner as there may be an idiot trying to pass him on your side of the road.
The weather looks like it should be OK for the weekend so I might pop along for that.
Oh I would love to come and ride with you guys on the next one.. I am on 250cc thought. Hope you guys are not hooning.
Don't worry about that, I'm in the same boat as you. I'm not into speed and was worried about keeping up. These Tuesday rides (all two so far) have been great relaxed cruisy rides that as a two month old rider I have been very comfortable with.
and that sunset was amazing!!

Saturday 20 Feb Proposed Makara Ride
This Saturday I intend to ride over the proposed route for the upcoming Tuesday 23 February evening ride that caters for slower 250cc paced riders and novices. Other larger bikes are of course welcome.
Key points will be:
overall distance and ride time,
opitional turnaround points,
road condition/road layout/hazards, and
rider experience and confidence.
The Tuesday evening ride considering the distance and time, a destination meal break will be later, and therefore riders may want to grab a snack and bring it to the Duckpond to eat before departure.
Tuesday’s Ride - Additional turnaround points include:
Karori: on arrival here the novice riders in particular have the opportunity to turnaround.
Makara Beach turn-off – a decision based on overall time and gathering twilight.
Subject to overall time for the ride this Saturday, then ride for Tuesday evening may only go to Makara Beach and return back through Karori.
The Saturday and Tuesday rides will be at the extreme novice pace and frequent brief stops will be made enroute.
Saturday Proposed Meeting Points
Avalon Duckpond
Ngauranga Caltex
A calendar event and time will be posted Friday Evening.

May I suggest the other way round - starting from johnsonville and heading to karori.
This direction makes those corners on the hill up to karori absolutely excellent. Going uphill, they are some of the nicest sweeping corners around. But coming downhill on them is a right pain as the camber of the road makes you feel like you are battling against understeer all the way to the straights.
But, if I were you I would just do the johnsonville to karori and then turn around on the lookout (before the hill down into karaori) and head back to johnsonville. It's such a great road you might as well do it twice. Otherwise you are spedning half your time just commuting through the suburbs.
Just a couple of thoughts - your ride so whatever you decide is fine. Happy to meet up at caltex if starting from the karori end.
Cheers
Ben

Interesting points Ben. I agree it is nice to favour roads and directions we find most easy.
However the types of roads, surfaces, weather conditions, corners, downhills etc that we find personally challenging are possibly ones we could pay a little more attention and practice time to.
When time permits I try to ride the very roads I dislike the most purely to get better, smoother and faster at riding them - all confidence building stuff.

True, and that is a good point - I avoided going down the paekok hill (paraparaumu side) because it gave me a feeling of vertigo the first time I did it (I was thinking about the drop a bit too much). Finally did it again the other week and really rather enjoyed it. Wasn't looking forward to it beforehand but ended up feeling quite impressed with myself.
But, was more so making the point on the direction for the benefit of people new to the makara road. As you know it is quite a tricky little road that seems to have a little bit of everything thrown in. Just want people new to the road to enjoy it on their first go.

This is a Saturday morning scoping ride for the programmed ride next Tuesday evening.
Avalon Duckpond
Time 10.10am for 10.30am departure
Caltex – Hutt Road Kaiwharawhara
Time 10.45am for 10.50am departure
I have selected the ride to travel south north, enabling the new riders to experience evening inner city suburb riding from the harbour up through Wadestown and over to Karori. The Makara ride terminating at Johnsonville in the later twilight brings riders back to main roads SH1 and SH2.
For Tuesday - I encourage riders to perhaps have a snack before the evening ride.

We wondered if the "little" hayabusa would make it. Went well. 8 of us in total. Guy, me and a couple of others departed the Duckpond at 10:30. Picked up another 4 at Caltex Kaiwhara. We rode on to Makara beach. Stopped at the cafe then onto Johnsonville stopping again in Glenside at Thymer cafe (used to be called Herbs - next door to the garden centre). All up about 75 mins from the Duckpond (plus stop and chatter time).
Guy did a great job organising things. No dramas and everyone enjoyed it. It was a good relaxing pace. Allowed you to take in the scenery and smell the fresh air. Great company and good weather. Can't ask for much more as a biker really. Pity the camera is broken otherwise I'd have a few snaps (damn - just realised the phone could have taken some). Looks like the weather will hold for a few days so should make a nice jaunt Tuesday night.

Thanks for that Dave, to sum up the ride "all good". Time and distance will not be an issue this Tuesday and south to north from Karori end will be fine.
When the ride occurs again in March, from the Johnsonville end, perhaps given the diminishing daylight then a turnaround at Makara Beach back to Johnsonville could be an option.
Well the unexpected ride after the stop today at Glenside cafe saw me and four of the guys carry on back over the Haywards Hill across to Silverstream, up Blue Mountains Road, out past Short Straw cafe, then Whitemans Valley, Mangaroa Valley, Maymorn, Te Marua, Mangaroa Hill, Wallaceville Hill, and then Burger King Upper Hutt. By the time everyone gets home ( Clint with a wasp visitor in the helmet and sting on the chin) it will have been a 150km plus ride (to Castlepoint equivalent).
Enthusiastic comments from these new riders, and they are already talking of setting up their own weekend morning ride come winter.
One bike maintenance observation: Regular clean and lube on the bike chain, several bikes had lube splatter across rear rim and tyre wall, while one chain had not seen any lube for many moons. Wipe over chain with kerosene moistened rag to remove road grime and lube, then use good chain lube spray. Wipe clean rim and use clean rag to wipe tyre wall. The often found and expressed difficulty 'my bike doesn't have a centre stand, and I haven't got a paddock stand...'
A blue dome day and an enjoyable ride. Thanks for the company and now you have some new found regions to explore.

I would recommend cleaning the chain every say 1000kms (taking my queue from the Suzuki manual) and as you stated Guy, it pays to clean up splatter too. It is time consuming to do without a centre stand, lift or paddock stand (I do mine on a side stand) but its not the sort of thing anyone should neglect for too long.
I hope the weekend ride is a Saturday!

There is no doubt that TCWNR has evolved. The slower rides and variation in routes have gone. BuckBuck#1 Tuesday ride has merit as a ride for new riders. I feel there is less risk to me on the Thursday ride and will fit them in when I can. I will be at the back and arrive late but not be concerned I am going to be carved up.

Yeah cheers for putting on this practice ride Guy. The speed was just right for a rider on an unknown patch of road and I for one feel a lot more confident going into Tuesdays ride knowing what's ahead.
Very worth while and good times were had all round.

Weekend rides - Saturday - Done between now and end of daylight saving 3 April 2009. I will look at the Tuesday and Wednesday Daylight saving program and tgake from this to do the Saturday program. Will post up Saturday 27 Feb ride (edit will now be a Sunday ride 28 Feb this week only) during the week, we can all chat it over on Tuesday.
Chain lube, I forgot to mention, I actually wipe down my chain and re-lube between 450km-650km. The paddock stand is a real bonus.

That was a great day out. Cheers Guy for showing us the Blue Mountain ride, that's great having a new place to play.
I'm enjoying riding with this bunch. All good folk and at a good learning pace.
Cracker day for it too.
Take it easy on that wee cruiser going up the Blue Mountains Road, and if you decide not to carry on up Whitemans Valley and do turn around and head back down Blue Mountains be vigilant with oncoming traffic snaking up the hill can quickly appear.

Cheers Dennis thanks for the comment. I noted that you often took up TEC on numerous WNCR rides too. With only six weeks before the end of daylight saving, you may want to bring your ' Busa' along on one of the Tuesday rides and with Toaster's 'Busa'. The novice riders can for the moment but only dream. :scooter::scooter:

Did you go around Lake Wairarapa? (If not than next time perhaps try it out, be mindful of stray stock, oncoming traffic and narrowing road section on western side.)

Sounds like Saturday went well. Looking forward to joining you on Tuesday.
I went up towards Palmy today via Wairarapa, then headed across the gorge to kapiti coast. Was a great ride. About 300k today. Ride went great until I got half way up my road about 10 minutes away from being home (Akatarawa Road). A tourist pulled out of one of the blueberry farms right in front on me, accelerated (Sorry my spelling is hopeless) very quicky to try and "beat the gap", and stopped within about half a metre of my bike passing their nose. Me heading along the road, them stopped completely parallel on the road. Got to put some serious emergency breaking into practice. CLOSE CALL! I think she was driving with her eyes closed.
But I managed to pick my escape path as I saw it happening, point the bike in that direction, and break fast without locking up the wheels. Stayed completely up right, got around the car, good outcome. Needless to say that I couldn't help but let the "finger"slip in their direction.
mmmm It's quite a mission living out here. The only trouble I ever see is from touriest just like that. Good thing I know what to expect.
Safe and sound, pleased with my reaction, and looking forward to a ride with you all on Tuesday evening.

Well done Katie for keeping her shiny side up. :2thumbsup
Please note that tourist's are not the only trouble on that road. I hit gravel whilst leaning into a right hand sweeper back in Nov along that road. Bike jumped sideways into a culvert and then stopped after hitting the pipe running under a driveway. I flew for 10-12 feet. The bike only managed 8 feet. Thankfully I got up and walked away from it. The bike wasn't so lucky.
Whenever there are driveways coming onto Akatarawa Rd, there tends to be gravel dragged onto the road at the entrance. You need to watch for this as it can catch you out very easily.

Yes well, I am just pleased we found you all that had scattered to the 4 winds. One of the challenges of group riding in suburban streets in traffic. There was always a good chance of the groups getting a tad split up.
It doesn't matter if the bike is new, old, big or small; its just a great to have people out there keen enough to have a go and ride.

24th February 2010, 20:12
The trick to not getting part of the group lost is always keeping the rider behind you in sight. This is one of the golden rules we apply when out four wheel driving and can apply to motorcycling just as well.
If every rider keeps the rider behind him or her in sight at all times, no one will get left behind or lost. If you lose sight of the rider behind you, slow down or even come to a complete stop until you can see the rider behind you again. Even if the last bike in the convoy breaks down or stops then by following this rule, the whole convoy will come to a stop. The other thing to help make this rule work is not to pass the rider in front of course. Keep your place in the convoy. Another very helpful tool for convoys is a two way radio between the lead rider and tail end charlie although this is not so simple on motorcycles.

Hey Cam.. I know, I couldn't stop looking at your light, in disbelief of how hopeless mine was. Actually, it was particually bad that night. I had adjusted it as the week before, it was pointing just infront of my wheel, but I had lifted it too much. On the way home I used high beam and the bloody thing completely missed the road! Ahhhh frustrating. Once again, I crawled up my road as there have been plenty of fresh rock falls.
So.. It's as good as it gets now. Went on the Wednesday ride to Featherston, and could see. What a bonus. Definately something I will pay close attention to these next few months when looking for my next bike. I have to have a better light living where I do - whether I plan to be out at night or get caught out.
Thanks for leading us over the hill. It seems that Mike and I's speedos are also reading rather differenty from eachother. Now got no idea what speed I am actually doing.Curious to know what speed you were reading along the highway before turning off to Haywards?

At Mana? Well I cant exactly recall but you bvoth were sitting pretty much around the 100-110km/h mark I think. I don't recall thinking it was either slower or faster along that stretch. What we can do next ride is do a comparison in a 50 and 100 zone. All speedometers have an accuracy of +/- several km's. The police cars I used to drive were calibrated and they tended to be within 2km/h at 50 and 4km/h of actual speed at 100. Bikes would likely be simliar or a tad worse I am guessing.
When I ride past the radar board on SH1 near Plimmerton it always shows my actual speed as well slower than I am reading in both the Landrover and on the Hayabusa (actually it doesn't pick up the Hayabusa.... ;)

Nah - never.
Fella on the Nullabor, sees a guy on the side of the road, long trousers, singlet and braces. He is fixing his punctured back tyre on his bicycle. Fella in the FJ Holden pulls up and gives him a hand.
Fella gets back in his car after helping the guy and drives off, shortly afterwards he looks in his rear-view mirror and sees this bicycle guy flat out gaining on him and then siiiiinnnnnnggg passes the Holden.
Fella accelerates and passes the bicycle.
Bicycle passes the Holden.
Holden passes the bike and slows down. The bicycle puts on the brakes, pulls up to the Holden driver's door.

You need to learn to ride in the rain Katie. A good set of waterproofs and off ya go. You never know when you will be caught out and not have a choice. I ride to Welly every day, no matter rain, wind or both. If the sun is shining it's a bonus.
Yes I know. Good practice riding in the rain. But I have been caught out many times in the rain, on my road, on the Rimutakas, on the forgotton highway. It's not so much that I'm worried about the risks of riding in the rain (I take is much much slower round corners etc). It's more a fact that my "waterproof" riding gear seems to not even be water resistant, nor is my back pack, and it's always a pretty crappy day at work soaked to the bone. Plus I'm REALLY soft when it comes to getting my bike wet. I'm going to be selling it soon, and have to completely clean it each time it gets wet. Being made of cheap materials, any moisture on it and the chrome marks, starts to rust etc. They don't hold their value very well, let alone when they look a bit shabby.
I know I know - HARDEN up girl! ;) Working on that. Oh... get a bit unconfindent in the rain as my tyres slip quite happily on the slightest angle (especially on my road). I'll get there. Just broke from buying the bike new so still a bit "overprotecitce". Hopefully I'll get over that soon and be a real biker that rides rain or shine.
Still, it's the only way to get experience, being out in it all! Man I'm such a girl (sorry ladies, no offence intented - you know what I mean).

Ah not too far away now. I can get my full on the 10th April once I have completed my defensive riding course. Looking at listing the bike super soon as I know it's going to be hard to sell. Many have been sitting on trade me for AGES.
Hahaha a GSXR1100 you say? Mmmmm not quite the direction i was heading, but stranger things have happened. :) I'm open to test riding all sorts to at least say I've tried before I buy. :)

Light rain here in Hutt, would it be a go to head up the coast through Plimmerton and back home up the hill from the Paekakariki side? Just thinking it would be good experience for the newer riders to do a light rain without having to deal with downhill corners in the wet. Uphill cornering is less challenging for noobs.

Weather radar looked good 4.35pm. So unless it hoses down which appears unlikely (the sun is shining now) it will be a go.
Planned ride from Duckpond over the Haywards Hill around inlet on Greys Road right at SH2 (optional turnaround point at Paekakariki) upto Raumati - Waterfront Cafe & Bar. Ride ends there.
Personal choice if people elect to ride over Paekakariki Hill.

Hi everyone.
Ratti and myself have just registered for the womens training day at Manfield Track on the 30th March with Karel Pavich (is that correct Ratti?). Can't wait. But i have also just realised that this is the last Tuesday night ride! Oh no. I was planning on staying the night up that way (as I'm heading up Auckland the next day). If I was to come back that night, I think we would get back too late to join the ride anyway.
So very excited about the training day, but also was looking forward to a meal out together after the last ride. :(

Sounds like a good experience. I hope you girls have a good turnout and favourable weather for the trackday. Watch out for the cows (do they still have them there??!!). I recall driving around that track flat out in a police car and passing by a small herd of cows happily sitting right next to the track watching us go by.... bizarre. Although that was a fair few years ago now.

yup All registered. Did not think about it being a tuesday night. o well, no-ones gonna miss me anyway. there is no reason why we cant still do tuesday nights as long as the weather is reasonable. Even riding in the dark should not be an issue. and the very noobs will benefit from the practice of night riding. AS long as we can convince a few more experienced riders to come along and offer an hint or two on night riding. Its all part of the game

not for not going to meetings. For doing dumb shit whilst out and about.
Last month I got fined for having too much pink duct tape holding the bike together.
i was a bit late on SUnday cos my side cover had fallen off and I'd not noticed. I had to find more duct tape to keep the rain off the battery. Given the round of applause and laughter I suspect another fine in the offing.

You need a heavy old clunker, they barely even notice the stuff. that and the fact that if I drop him, it really doesnt matter as he's a rat bike already. Whats a few more dents or something else falling off? Not like your flash bikes that get written off if the plastic breaks.
Wouldnt you know it? I got all the way around without losing anyone, got to the pub-still not lost, rode off home, promptly missed and ended up exploring streets Ive not seen before. From now on Im taking my map book with me, bloody welly hills, all look the same to me.

I was starting to think I had joined the tuesday night off road ride at one point.
Was a F/TRuckload of gravel. If I was on my own I would have been in first gear with my feel hovering either side of the bike. But, as others were about and I didn't want to look like a prat, I did the gravel in second gear and kept the feet firmly on the pegs. Was actually a good experience as it got me over my nervousness about riding on gravel.
That said the bike did squirm a couple of times and I was very relieved that I had just fitted a rad guard (lots of pinging stones).
Ratti is a born off road rider in my opinion - she took that gravel like it wasn't even there.

Was looking forward to doing the whole ride but the cellphone buzzed, called in to reboot a server...effing IT jobs ruin ride nights I tell ya.
Hey Eyegasm, I used to do the Wainui 500 every day too, great hill that!
Just at night, be careful of the merge lanes at the top, you wont see any fresh diesel left by the busses in the dark.
My advice is ALWAYS crest the hill in the outside lane (less buss diesel spills in that lane for obvious reasons) and enjoy the off cambers ;)

Gidday Stoney, was good to meet up last night. Know what you mean about rebooting servers, brother in law has to do it numerous times through the weekends which play havoc with his riding too.
A good comment about diesel left by buses, appreciate it and that the novice riders that have attended the Tuesday rides do pickup on this type of feedback.

Hey Buck Buck. I have it in my diary for Friday that we are going for a pootle over the hil to check out the Wainui road. IS that correct? Ive got 1.15, but if you still want to do it, can we go about 12? I have a heap of 10 yo girls coming for a birthday sleepover that night and I need to make sure I'm home after school.
Was anyone else going to ride over too?

Good ride tonight. Certainly mixed it up a bit which was good. Gave people more options given the diversity of the group.

Bike got a bit hot so had to get some air through the rad on the way back... roll on this evening... DJ
I know the feeling. Actually that could be an interesting excuse for speeding.... "My bike was on fire and I was trying to blow it out!!"

Indeed, another lovely and very enjoyable ride. Thanks everyone for last night. Once again looking forward to next week. Can't this lovely weather just last unitl, next summer perhaps?
Good turn out. Always love looking back in the mirror and seeing a line up on bikes like that. Quite a buzz actually

I remember the "buzz" of riding in a group from my first ride out with the KB Wednesday night crew. It was great to see bikes streaming ahead into the distance - and the noise was awesome. And each Wednesday (or Tuesday) that I manage to attend, I still get the same funky feeling. Trying to describe it to non-bikers is weird - they just dont get it... a big group of bikes, a sunny evening, sticky tarmac and a full tank of gas... there is nothing quite like it... DJ

The weather looks good for tomorrow and the road seal is fine for the 250cc paced ride out to the coast.
Aside from up and down the Wainuiomata Hill, the ride has a good mixture of bends; sweeping, esses, and tighter ones too. I find this a good ride: you can settle in and flow with the road shape choosing good safe lines and setting up with smooth counter-steering. Also it is important to have your hazard awareness skills tuned - casting out ahead, particularly for the occasional sheep or three that may have strayed.

Christy, do you want to meet me at the truck gas station on old hutt road that we met you at last time? Say around 5.45pm? I can take you out to the duck pond. Good experience in the rush hour traffic too..

Turn right if coming from the city at Avalon... over bridge and it is right there on the left. The pond is this big wet looking thing with ducks on it.
Buckbucks bright green kwaka will be there.... easy to spot, it sticks out like a glow stick down your trousers.

Hi All,
I'm just curious, how many usually turn up to these rides? Also, do you do them on any other days, like weekends?
Do you get a good spread of makes models and CC ratings? I don't wanna turn up on a 1000 to be surrounded with scooters if you know what I mean :)
Cheers,
Buzzard.

The amount of people turning up varies night to night, minimum 3 maximum 18?
CC's are all over the place starting at 250 up to Cams 1300cc Busa.
As for other rides, Tuesday, Wedneday x 2, Thursday and Saturday.
Just check the other threads.

These rides are on the slow side, and quite suited to A scooter. You might want to turn up at the Duckpond on Wednesday at 6pm, as the pace is more suited to casual riders that go at a normal speed on a variety of bikes, mainly over 250cc. Just remember, go up the front if you want to go fast, go at the back if you want to go slow, it aint brain surgery.

Wednesday and Thursday for you then matey, although no one held up the KTM last week, seemed to be only 4 250's out of the whole pack of 12!!!
Tuesdays a 'slow mentoring' ride, intended for a quite toodle and where experienced riders can mentor newbies etc
Wednesday is a medium (own pace) ride for all levels.
Thursday is for the brave and radar detector touting lunatic set
