If there is enough interest i will organize another King country ADV ride.

It will start again in Otorohanga on the Saturday morning and we would stay in Taumarunui again on the Saturday Night
I have sorted out some different roads to use from last year ( will get there before its dark this time ) to get to Taumarunui but would stick with the Sunday favourites of Fishers track and the 42nd traverse, possibly in the opposite directions.

Poll above and any suggestions welcome

some one would need to scout the section in fishers to see if its got any worse, where the wash out was, umm ill try find a photo, i know there is one somewhere.
some riders may find the up hill run on fishers difficult.. its a bit more changeling than going down....

Wash out is still fine, up hill is no problem. If its too wet on the day we can always do it down hill - girle style.

I know but that ride is $275 plus camping - fuel etc.... as opposed to 1 nights accom at a camping ground and takeaways in town

Might not be in everyones budget. And the V8s are on here the week before hand so thats where i will be spending my pennies.

There's a bit of vibration from them and you need to be a little more cautious on white lines and in the wet but otherwise I can still scrape my boots on the E-09's.

Crisis management
5th March 2010, 06:42
So r u guys running full knoblies on these rides? How do u find them on the road ive never been on the road with full knoblies

Depends what you call full knobblies...the type of tyres we run are Pirelli MT21 / Continental TKC 80 / Mitas E09/ type which is a knobbly road tyre rather than a true off road knobbly. For example, I went on an adventure trial ride last year (mostly barely road legal trail & enduro bikes) and the guys there thought my knobblies where too smooth and not aggressive enough, pretty much the tyres we use are fine on the road but, as Eddie points out, be a bit more careful in the wet.

Hi Mark, good to see your organising this ride again. I voted but as the other contributors suggest am keen to ride just about any on the dates suggested.
I rode Fiishers track over the Auckland Anniversary weekend in Jan 10, the wash out is getting deeper, although not very long can bea challenge on a big bike, momentum is your friend. Cheers Al

I don't know if this can dovetail into this ride neatly but I'm keen to do the the Whanga Rd Track - maybe on the Saturday - and join up with you guys for the 42nd and Fischers on the Sunday? (If possible I would like to do these two both ways)

Mark - if you would prefer to not have people popping in and out of your ride I will arrange to do this at another time.

junkmanjoe
16th March 2010, 13:50
i would look at coming up for the 42nd and fishers on sunday,
if any other welly riders wanted to do a run.
or as mark says, we sort it out another weekend.

Eddieb
16th March 2010, 14:20
I could be interested in gate crashing Saturday night for Sunday's ride also. Doing the whole ride from Welly means taking Friday off to get to the start and I'm not sure if that would work this year.

For those thinking of doing this it's a good ride. Mark puts together a great string of gravel backroads on Saturday and Fishers and the 42nd on Sunday are not to be missed tracks.

Proper knobby tyres are essential for Sunday though, TKC-80, E-09, T63 etc. Don't bother even asking if your GS will get through Fishers / 42nd on half worn Conti Escapes or similiar.

That does sound like a pretty good idea, maybe it can be organised to join the saturday ride somewhere around noonish at a particular location? MXNut would this be possible?

42nd would be fine on shit tyres. As for Fishers....you'd have to be a little bit crazy, but wouldn't be too bad if it hadn't rained for a few....ummm.....weeks.

I've done 42nd on fairly road based tyres in the dry and it wasn't a huge issue. but it would only take a touch of moisture to make some parts super slippery without knobs. Someone who hasn't done those tracks and/or much adventure riding is always going to ask and if they don't know what they are in for I'm not going to recommend anything less.

Who was that young fella on the 650 Dakar last time we went through? he wasn't having much fun picking his bike up all the time on 80/20 tyres.

Hi new to the site, have been reading threads etc for a while. Finally got around to registering. Point is, is this ride open to anybody? My theory is that many hands make light work ( i'm a sparky) also helps when stuck in mud holes. Have been talking about trying these tracks for a while. So like minded people would give me the encouragement to do it.
So meet up points, anything needed for camping? other details? Thanks.

Welcome mate.

YES open to all.
good entry, easy to medium riding. not really best for road based tires, but a good duel purpose tire will see you right.
saturday night is normaly at Taumarunui motor camp, about 2-3 kms south taumaruni.most times we split share a cabin to keep the costs down.
not sure on marks start point for saturday, but keep watching this thread and a calendar thread will pop up soon. thats where you put your name down if you wish to ride along,
more details will be on this thread.
other than that, bring a happy face, and dont be scared of the mud and getting your feet wet.
there great weekends and worth the time to do it, also meet up with new riders like your self..

Just did the Whanga RD today, it is that dry and dusty you'll need the rum to wash the dusty papa out of your mouth.Make sure your the guy in the front cause the poor buggers behind you wont be able to see a thing.Hasnt rained out here for a long time, they are trucking water out to the pub( she's DRY) of water that is not beer thats all good.

Pick a semi reasonable time & I'll be there. 8.00ish? Will we be doing a straight streak up, or will we have time for a few side roads? The main road is fairly much snooze material.

Bart, where would we potentially hook up with you? Do you want me to book you a bed in a Cabin.

Marks, are you going to Motel it, or room in with the lower lifeforms this year?

I was intending to leave fairly early on Sat morning and ride (briskly) up to Whangamomona (about 5hrs from home - I think). Have lunch at the pub and do an in-out job on the old Whanga Rd track and then head up to Taumaranui for the night.

Happy to try and meet you cruiser guys somewhere on the way up for a coffee?

Anyone is welcome to join - but it will be a fairly long day

Keen to hook up on the saturday morning for an early start.

8 would be good if you ca do it

the main road is pretty damn mind destroying - what if we go up to Bulls via sh1 then curve a bit north via Marton etc and go to Wanganui and then make it up from there

Maybe young Bartholemew could meet us at Sanson or Bulls about 9-9.15ish?? - I'll be ready for a coffee by then

I'll try and get a room at the same cheap hotel I stayed at last time. Actually - they had a house that they rented out that would sleep quite a few bodies - I'll find out costs etc

Hi Joe

Thanks for your email. Cabin 3 is available and I’ve booked it for you for the night. How many will be in there?

Just to let and the other guys know we are leaving the park on 1 April. We were subleasing it from my brother-in-law and had thought we had an agreement with him to be here for five years but he has decided to sell the park so we have to move. We are returning to Auckland where we came from and because they are going to be looking after the park (and don’t know your group) I should get a credit card number/expiry from you for the booking.

Tell the others to still send their bookings through before the end of March and I’ll make sure they get their cabins.

It was great catching up with you guys. You were an excellent bunch to have here and we’ll miss the great groups like yourselves who came through the camp.

Happy biking!

Cheers

Did the 42nd traverse yesterday on my own.-----Thought ,hell,if I do it on these tyres in the wet,Im in trouble.(Nearly bald TKC80 ,& a Dunlop knobbly, badly cupped ,now,on the front. That I,d bought second hand for $5/the pair,on Trademe:yes:) Don,t want to replace em ,till the spring.
A perfect day:sunny:,weather wise, took a bit longer than I thought, both getting there (180km up the "Lost World" hiway) & the track itself, nearly 3 hours, with "yakking" to hunters,& a little bit of reconicense on foot.(Bloody steep downhill, thought,if it ain,t the track,& I,ve gotta get back up,I mighten,t make it.)mind you,I overshot the Koopors road---little signage-- ,& finnished up in an area thats being logged,a bit further up.But a guy getting firewood set me right ,down some cool forestry roads.
Won,t spoil it ,by describing the track itself, but it is an adventure, would do it again tomorrow,if I had time.
One thing that made me laugh, near the start,a ute came round the corner ,through the overhanging scrub,pulling------a caravan------a folddown one,admittadly,-----but looked ,so out of place.
Comming home was slow----blown high beam (again) & cold ,hit the shed @ 8 pm.

No excuses mate, I bought a house at auction and less than 72 hours later I was riding some wicked south island roads, and that was over 2000km away (I did use an aeroplane so I kinda cheated getting there!), but then again I did have to rush back up the country to help the partner pack, but I did manage a few weeks of epic riding before i got home.

The acerbis 22ltr fixed that prob for the xr:Punk:

I am looking a bit doubtful for making it for all of Saturdays ride, any chance of getting a rough route map, so I can pick somewhere to try and meet up with the group along the way?
I know you will only be able to give me a pretty rough place/time estimate, and I am not too worried if I end up riding down to Taumaranui solo, but would be nice to meet the sat ground along the way if I can.

Cheers

Cheers Mark, I figured PioPio would be a through point, sounds like meeting you guys there around lunchtime could be the plan for me.
I will probably come down via Waitomo Valley Rd/Waipuna Rd so I don't die of SH boredom before I get there.

I'm out. Can't get a new clutch cable until next week. They're having to get one in from Japan. The DR650 must be one of the most popular bikes around, and no clutch cables in the whole country ?:shit::weird:

Looks like the house sale is going to happen sooner than we expected also, so should spend some time around here sorting this place out.

Thanks, but I doubt it would get here plus fitted, before Friday.

It'd be interesting to see if they have one on the shelf though.

There'll be other rides. :bye: I've got more fun things to do anyway, like wallpapering, and painting. Much more fun then riding stinky motorbikes through some of the most awesomest scenery around. Who wants to waste a perfectly good weekend riding bikes anyway. Dumb idea. :crybaby:

Bart, better late than never. A few serious distractions today.

Boyds don't have a clutch cable, and funnily enough said none were due into the country until next week.

But they said a better bet would be a repair, as the genuine one was a bit much at about $75, and suggested I go to Apex (here in Hamilton), and get them to make me a new one. Or inner. Or outer. Or whatever I needed. Sorry....

Also just as another data point, was looking at cush drive rubbers for KTM 640. $56 inclusive for a set. Yep those KTM parts are expensive all right.

Not too many photos from the w/e...too busy riding. Marks & I did our own thing Friday & Saturday (Friday - 42nd twice - 2nd attempt rained from 1/2 way, then got dark, Saturday - Old Whanga Rd there & back). Met with the guys for a few bevvies saturday night, & rode wth them Sunday. Missed out on Fishers due to Marks puncture (see Chris's photo) - damn. Regrouped with the guys for a 3rd ride down 42nd. On the ride back Sunday night - awesome ride along the ridge tops from Rangiwahia - Feilding - magic sunset. Home about 8.00pm.

2. Tunnel Old Whanga Rd
3. Doesn't look too bad. When in doubt...gas it

Nice work with the videos Eddie.
I got got stuck in that same bit as JMJ in the video, but I had dino behind me to provide encouragement (not help) so I made it through.
Glad you were not behind me when I had my little "off"

I managed a moderate speed bin on the 42nd, not sure what happened, but while trying to avoid a deep rut I think I locked up the rear going a bit quick and ended up on the deck.
I was trying to keep it quiet (the partner has hissy fits about these things sometimes), but after moving some gear out of the car today she worked out something was not quite right, so I gave her a vauge description of my crash. She then asked why the left side of my face was considerably larger than the right, after a check in the mirror and she was right. My head must have hit the deck a bit harder than I thought. I am pretty sore, my forearm is pretty swolen from wrist to elbow and I have a decent bruise above my elbow (just between the shoulder and elbow pads on my jacket). My entire sholder is pretty sore and very stiff, even after a bath and some tiger balm.
I will be taking it easy for a while, might even strip the 690 and give her a really good once-over and a well deserved clean.

Hey Chris I thought the speed of the group was good and we all kept together well. By the way you took some good photo's, nice work.
