Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, what with the stupid prancing, capering, hugging of Aussies and general embarrassing behaviour - Billy "Bigger than the game" Bowden makes a complete cahnt of himself.

Sorry, I have just calmed down.
He gave Ross Taylor out LBW in the worst piece of umpiring I have seen in 35 years of playing and watching cricket.

Shooting is too good for him.
You should be able to watch a cricket game and come away with little or no recollection of who the umpire was, they should be anonymously efficient. But this dipstick - with his stupid signals and dance steps - if he wants to be a public figure, he should play the game, not umpire it.

Granted. But 1) this one was a howler, and 2) his capering and poncing about makes him hard to stomach when he's doing a good job, but when he cocks up...

He has Athritis...... thats why his finger is always crooked. He is definately a character trying to infuse a little colour into what some people believe is a very bland game.

I've heard the arthritis story.
The problem is firstly when he signals a four, the finger isn't crooked, and secondly I don't thing arthritis makes you ponce about like he does when signalling a leg bye or a four.
I'm also pretty sure that arthritis doesn't make you hug retiring Aussie Captains and try to steal a match wicket.
Notwithstanding that, the people who think it's a bland game are generally people who don't watch the game anyway.

Sorry, I thought he was a Morris dancer!
True, it was a bad bit of umpiring, why didn't he go to the TV umpire for a check, I thought they could do all that now!

Really? even worse than the 'underarm' from Chappel? when Brian Meketnie (spelling?) was given out?
Yeah calm down, its just a game of cricket, probably Bowdens first ever mistake.

Though my question is why did Taylor walk straight away? Or was that another batsman I'm thinking of?
Oakie
27th February 2010, 08:40
Didn't see the game but saw a bit on the news and an interview with the batsman given out. (Taylor?). At the time even he said he thought he was ouit ... although obviously not on the replay. Funny old game cricket. Players make mistakes just like umpires. I've made worse umpiring decisions than that. It happens. Move on.

Thank you for that! Difficult for the umpire to see then!
As in "the old days", the judgement has to stand as fair enough!

If there was ever a game that should be banned it's cricket. Like the batsman who can bat both sides and does so, nothing against it in the rules. But the umpires will not allow him to do this on the grounds that the other team has to reset the field. So what. It's cricket b ut some think it is not.

Like most new innovations in any sport there has to be clarity within the rules. If for example the case you mention where the batsman changes from a right hand stance to a left hand stance this affects many other rules within the game eg the wide rule and also the rule that only allows two fielders behind the square leg umpire on the leg side so in theory if the batsman changes stance all the slips fieldsmen make the delivery a no-ball.
Besides that we know you dont like cricket, rugby and the national party. Is there anything you do like besides Helen Clark???

he didn't walk, he was given (must have been a different batsman)
. (Taylor?). At the time even he said he thought he was ouit ... .
sarcasm! that, and if he was to make any criticism would risk being fined (usually the match fee=1000's of dollars)
and honestly, very definately the worst umpiring decision i ever remember seeing! all i can think of is bowden thought he caught a bottom edge that then ballooned off his boot, but in my experience (umpiring) in that situation you would almost alwats confer with the sq leg umpire b4 giving a decision
yup, truly was a shocker

' Enzo Pirhana. 'e used sarcasm!'
Must be frustrating for an Ump.
I ref'd over 1,000 games of basketball after I quit playing. Various levels.
Wouldn't have done it without the ability to Tech. a tosspot out of the building.

I like watching him umpire. All of them make shit decisions at times, he's no different in that respect. He's the only umpire who is interesting - the players have to have some competition in the "followings" stakes!

Hmmm. My decision to retire from cricket last season was helped when I found out our subs had gone up from $140 to $200. My green fees at about $15 / $20 three or four times a year is a luxury I an afford.

Hey Oakie, if "Smith Smyth Shit or Shite" gets his way he will double that with ACC! (do we have to pay 15% GST on the extra ACC levy as well?) :shit:
