The Hyatt half marathon has been cancelled at the very last minute this morning because the course went along mission bay waterfront.

My thoughts go out to the people in Chile, thats a badass quake.

If the rail line between Welly & Petone ever got wiped out thru disaster, getting to work in Welly city would be interesting.
No trains, Motorway Gridlock + getting ticketed by WCC for parking bikes outside your workplace.

Maybe cancelling events after the fact was not such a good idea, plus the fact that if NZ gets hit square on then the effect is neutralised and diluted over a huge area. It's the guys getting hit head on who should be concerned.

If it was going to happen the South Island would have been hit this morning at 7.05 am.

Anyone ?...........................................

On the tv one news break at 8.00am this morning the expert being interviewed said that they were expecting a swell to hit Auckland of less than 1 meter ! I'm not sure if that warrants an evacuation but I suppose its better to be safe than sorry in these situations.

Wouldn't a meter high left hand break suit most surfers on the west coast on NZ?

NZ Herald says:
Pitt Island in the Chathams has been hit by a 1.5 metre surge of water this morning as the entire east coast of New Zealand has been put on a tsunami alert.

Another surge, measuring one metre, has also reached the Chathams and authorities warn that it is heading towards the mainland.

Official tsunami warnings are in place for the entire east coast after a massive earthquake hit Chile overnight.

A wave measuring 1.5m has hit Raoul Island in the Kermadecs, earlier this morning.

Meanwhile, a wave measuring 20cm has reached Gisbourne this morning but authorities said a second surge could be larger.

Walking over to Rangitoto sounds like fun. I don't expect the water will be back for ages yet

Update: It's 10:52 for the action on the North Shore

Was down on the Waimak early on about 7.30. Never bothered to get my rod out as a few minutes after I arrived the Police came down and told us there was tsumani alert. Hung around for an hour or so off th ebeach but this was a non event down there. some surges but nothing of life threatening kind.

Still better safe than sorry. Over all I think the co-ordination seem to work throughout the country. So that's a plus.

Was planning on heading to Papamoa last night but decided to go this morning. That was until all these Tsunami reports were coming in. Thought i better not waste the day on a beach that is closed so we headed off to Raglan which is only 30 minutes away. And we find they closed that bloody beach as well! Ah well didn't stop me or the other hundred people swimming.

Well, from what I saw in the media I think they did pretty well. The public at large seem pretty ignorant of what could happen.

The authorities can't win. If people ignore them and get swept away they are just as screwed as if they cock the warning up.

I believe boat owners were advised they would be better with 30m of water under them, rather than at moorings.

People seem to think that a tsunami is a wall of water that travels at really high speed demolishing everything in it's path, while both of those ideas are valid they don't happen at the same time. In deep water it is a fast moving wave with relatively low amplitude such that you pretty much wouldn't notice it going past, as it gets into shallow water and starts to go ashore is when it starts to build in height and drop in speed. The further away from the coast you are the safer you are, this is regardless of whether you are at sea or on land.

Just like with everything else, a little bit of education goes a long way.

Part of me wanted there to actually be a decent wave this time around, even if it was only 1-2m and did a bit of damage around the place. At least then people would have accepted the response from Civil Defense and all those who belittle the efforts put in by such an organisation which aims to save lives would be left with little ammunition, though they would likely be saying that not enough was done - funny that.

Something to that affect would have gone down a treat in Auckland. Then people would learn to take the warnings seriously.

Im guessing that because a small harbour like Leigh, the effect was greater than say any given beach etc. Scotts Landing was another inlet than had the same sort Tidal Serge thing happen, Omaha perhaps? dunno.

Yep, away from shore the safest place to be in your boat. Arthur's Pass village should be pretty safe if you're staying on land...

All the same - I wasn't going out on my kayak sunday morning... Aside from the 'killer wave' warning we got from Vickis mum at 4:10 am.... we were seriously hung over from the neighbours wedding and... I'd been out early sat morning and we had a fridge full of fresh snapper so no need really... ;-)

I think CD did a much better job! Good on em!
