Are MX lids allowed on-road?

This is going to sound like a stupid question, but I figure Adv rider folk are more likely to know than most others on KB.

Question is: Are motocross helmets legal to use on the road?

I searched around, but found nothing addressing this on the site, though given another few weeks I could have trawled every therad. The reason for the question is that we have one car, 2 kids and potentially conflicting appointments. Leave out the argument "Would you let your kid ride on the back of your bike in an MX lid." for the moment, this is hypothetical and the fact that I even thought of it disturbed me. (I still need to get him & the bike in the same place to see if his feet reach the pegs.)

We could allow an argument on the topic: Can you get on-road lids in kids sizes, and would a "no" answer negate the above (disallowed) argument on the basis that a lid that fits is better than a top-of-the-line lid which is 3 sizes too big.

At least there would be a place to go to find out the answer(s). Here.

NZTA say anything approved to UN/ECE 22-5 will do. MX lid says it does....

Most MX lids are even more legal than road lids.
Without a current sticker you're not allowed to race MNZ races.

The only problem with MX lids is noise...

MX helmets are fine for road use - I often use my MX helmet in summer as it's much cooler than a road full face.My kids use the MX helmet when they are pillion.

As long as it has a sticker on it mentioning a well known standard (such as DOT, NZS, etc) you are probably fine.

That's what i was trying to say. Kids love the mx style & googles are supercool.
I took my 5 yr old girl out for her first time on the back of the bike last weekend (been on the front heaps of times), she loved it. We get either big smiles or looks of horror from cage drivers.
my non-bike riding mate asked me once if I was worried that she'd get a bike when she was older, I said I can't wait till she does.

All good answers, thanks. In the UK, the regs are different (or they were before the extra layer of Eurocrats started nosing around in everything) and MX lids were illegal, for whatever reason. I guess an MX lid might be expected to miss kerbs & lamp-posts by a few km, but rocks are pretty hard - and you don't often jump a road-bike deliberately.

As for the looks of horror from cage drivers, I guess that means that they've seen you!

I would only expect MX lids to be illegal if they didn't meet the road standards. it may be possible that there are non-road standards in use for competition off-road only gear over there. AFAIK all helmets in this part of the world meet the road standards, be they (the helmet) on road or off.
