View Full Version : North Island: 4th Annual KB Gathering - Turangi - Queens Birthday Weekend 5-7 June 2010
Qkchk
29th March 2010, 04:38
Back due to popular demand! Same as we did in '07/'08 and '09/10 for the KB Gathering.
*However, we do have a change in accommodation this year, we will be based in Taupo (Details at bottom of post....)
WHAT IS THE KB GATHERING?
KBers (Kiwibikers) from North (Auckland/Northland/Waikato), South (Wellington/Wairarapa/Manawatu/South Island), East (Bay of Plenty/Hawkes Bay) and West (Taranaki) converge together in Turangi (Southern end of Lake Taupo) and have a bloody good time over the three days (or four if you head down earlier).
WHAT ARE WE DOING?
Friday
Some of us will make our lesuirely way down on the Friday. This day is optional as the main part of the 'Gathering' is from the Saturday to Monday.
Saturday
Regional groups ride to Turangi on Saturday (obviously you wouldn't ride direct, its a good chance to explore some roads on the way there), meet and greet Sat arvo over a beer or two. Settle in for the night. There are Hot pools accessable where are staying! :Punk:
Sunday
Go for a group ride or multiple group rides (depends on group numbers) Here are some suggestions, Taumuranui Saddle, Lake district - Desert Rd - Ohakune - Napier / Hastings - Forgotton Highway etc ... Please suggest ideas for rides in the thread, the actual ride will be decided on when we have all arrived at Turangi ...
Saturday / Sunday night could have a group BBQ or have a dinner at the resturant next door and drinkies etc.
Monday
Say our goodbyes and head back home.
WHEN IS IT HAPPENING?
Saturday 5th June, Sunday the 6th June and Monday the 7th of June. After previous year's experience some of us will be making our way down on the Friday......
WHERE ARE WE STAYING?
Contact details:

They have motel units, cabin rooms and campsites. There is a Laundry and large drying room available, camp kitchen and dining room, TV and lounge. Restaurant / Dairy next door. Hot mineral pools are free for guests staying and are open 24hrs and they also have hot freshwater spa pools (free for staying guests) and are open from 2pm til late).
Check in is @ 2pm, check out is 10am.
COSTS (Guide only, please contact Oasis for current prices)
MOTEL UNITS
Self-Contained Unit - $115 per night for two people, $135 for 3 and $20 for any extras
Studio Unit - $75 for 1 person, $85 for 2

Quite a few options available.
$25 per person (twin share)
$36 (single rate)
CAMPSITE
$17 per person
$11 per child
Remember these prices include free access to HOT mineral / spa pools!
Why are we going there this year? Myself and Qkkid have stayed the night and was impressed by the location and facilities :)
- Excellent resturant / dairy right next door
- Motel or cabin? Its your choice and budget
- Good BBQ area for mass cook-up
- Cabins are well heated (YAY!) and cozy
- Great bang for buck[/COLOR]
YOU will be responsible for your own bookings. I have enough stuff to do in a day let alone herd cats.... :weird:
CAN I COME ALONG TO THIS GATHERING?
Do you ride a road bike? Are you capable of riding more than 1000kms in a 3-day weekend? Can you maintain open road speed? Then YES you can come. Wifes / handbrakes / pillions welcome.
I will waste my time putting up a calendar thread, please waste your time by adding your name (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&ea=attend&e=2492) to the list attending.

Same as years previously! This is not about major inter Island travel, it's about meeting a like minded (KBers) group to socialise in basic comfort & group ride in the vicinity within each persons comfort zone and budget.

Thanks for clearing THAT up Nadroj. This will be our 4th year running so it ain't news and some of us only just got back from a 5500km tour of the south! Would like to do it over Jan but Queens birthday just seems to fit with the majority.
Myself and Mrs KG are up for it and booked in, plan on going down mid to late friday too Dawn. Sorry Graham, I didnt even think to talk to you about yesterday when I bumped into you @ Hampton Downs  Great, so we have got you hooked!

Ok, so it seems a long way off still but I just filled in a leave application for the 4th. That'd let me visit that Italian restaurant in Turangi on that night? Riders of Italian bikes seem to develop a habit of visiting Italian eateries...

As Steve said earlier the meals at the restaurant are unbelievable. Steve ordered Lamb Shanks but we were supplied the whole hogget! Seriously, the one meal could of fed us both.
* * * *
Now would be a good time to start thinking where you guys 'n gals want to go for the Sunday ride. Ive made a few suggestions on post No#2 but want to hear some good suggestions we can all vote on. Obviously the weather will play a part which heading we will take (its been 4 years and we STILL haven't got to do the Forgotten Highway ) .............

Just as long as there are no roads like that road out round broadwood. I mean it was fun and really suckered me into the woops .. but broken headlight, lost side cover, cracked wiring harness,, starts to get expensive!!!.
I know I know... my own fault for enjoying the air time so much :innocent:
Doesn't matter, if the weathers up for it there are sooo many good rides.

Had the heads up about this from a few of the Rustys and TT lot, they are coming up from down south so guess it will have to be a loooong weekend then :-)
Had hoped to try the Brass but bank account won't stretch to another south island trip for a few months and would be good to catch up with the team in a hot pool.
Not working so will have to be a busy little student and get off nice and early :-)

Without Stonechucker, a large bottle of Pimms and a Paul in NZ music quiz, these events will never be quite the same.

Just starting a new job as of monday, but as long as there's no required overtime, we'll be there this year.
Again, can't promise to join for the big ride, but I'll keep the late night conversationalists/philosophers company again....
.....Are you going to make it to the Brass Monkey?
Not my scene as I don't have a camper van ....and roughing it should still require a double bed, skyTV and preferably a hot pool.
Shouldn't be too bad as we're just going as far as Christchurch.

I was just planning on leaving when others were :) I've booked the day off so can leave anytime, but would prefer not to be too late. I don't mind arriving after dark, but would rather not ride the whole way at night. I've not ridden that way before but I'm guessing about 4 hours with a brief stop or 2?

How about 2.30pm @ the BP Autobarn?
Youre not far off from guessing the time as well as the breaks....... will probably stop once for fuel / bite, usually in Te Kuiti (good truck stop there with hot tucker)

 Whats speed got to do with it? I didn't mean race around treating the road like a race track... I meant hauling a bunch of bikers keen on not riding, through hundreds of km of beautiful countryside instead (and none of them 50km between stops either)! Now, if I can find a handy gravel road in the middle of nowhere, it will be an unforgettable adventure :D

Bloody gorgeous is the word alright and definitely a road that demands respect. Plenty of hazards (smooth tar, wet leaves, surface repairs, animals, drop outs, and VERY tight twisties :D) and quite 'technical'. And not a lot of cellphone coverage! I've done it about 8 times now and it gets better each time. Funny thing about it is that even though it's approx 160 kms long it just doesn't seem like it due to it's wow factor. Let's hope for one of those crystal clear winter days eh and if it's no good in that direction there's plenty of choice

If it happens you will love it  There's about 12kms of gravel through some awesome native forest. The gravel is pretty easy and will most likely be damp and packed down so the Hornet won't have any issues 2 up.

Now I have a few suggestions for the route down (bear with me fist time using a google maps link):
Option 1
Down SH22, Waingro to Raglan Rd, SH23 turning on to SH39 (Pirongia Rd), cut through the Waitomo Vally Rd & Trooper Rd to Eight Mile Junction, Eight mile Junction to Tamuranui and then over the saddle and into Tokaanu and our destination, 358km according to google.

Option 2
From the autobarn down 2 for a bit then turn off few some back roads to Morrinsvile, up and through Waterworks Rd (or somthing simular, I know a few options through here) linking up with some back roads out cambridge way before connecting up with the old Taupo Rd, then the western access into Turangi. THis is bassically the route we took last year, simplified of course. I cant be arsed doing a map becasue I have hit my data cap and this is all taking two long.
Option 3
There has been a suggestion made that we head down and loop back through through the forgoten highway If this was to occur I would recomend leaving out the 22 section of the first map and when we get to 8 mile junction turn towards New Plymoth.

Option 2 was fun last year although parts of it are indelibly burned into my memory bank - filed under scary. That was because of my slippery rear tyre. Backing a Pan into corners Motard style is ... interesting.
Gremlins ride looks a good option.
I would suggest SH22 to the Raglan road as a better option for that section because the other way is dangerously boring.
Then comes a deviation I rode after the last Cold Kiwi and I loved it.
A bit further south cut West through Nutunui to SH31 - the Kawhia road- and then south around the bottom of the harbour to Te Anga - hang a right and meander down through Marakopa and Waikawau to Awakino. The views and the road (not shown on the Google map) are very worthwhile. The road was brand new - bit of loose gravel on top here and there but not a problem as I was only racing the weather. ( I discovered Fronts move really fast.) .. and I won!

For Friday, and for that matter Saturday and Sunday if the weather turns to crap, we should bring our best party tricks. Perhaps a magic show or something.
Here's a pretty good party trick.

Ok after talking with Krayy today we have made an decision.
AUCKLAND SATURDAY DEPATURE
Ok scavanged these from last years thread
When: This Saturday Morning (05 June)
Where: Papakura Autobarn (Also known as the Papakura BP on the Motorway)
Time: Meet up and have a chinwag @ 0900 departing @ 0930
Why: Because because Carl cant be arsed getting out of bed any earlyier and we have get down to Turangi some bloody how and way
Weather is looking prety shit hold for Sunday (see attachments) so I cant see any reason why we wouldnt end up doing the forgotten h/way then so I recon we head east, play through the Waikato to Cambridge, then head down the western side of the river to end up at atiamurui (sp) we could then head down the western access and into Tokanuu or if people havent had enough riding we could get adventouris and turn back on the Bennydale road cut through the back, wrap round to Tamuranui, and then over to Tokanuu.
Still open to options but those are my thoughts
Krayy
2nd June 2010, 20:26
Looks good. We did that route with the Rusty Nuts a few years back. We can do some fluffing about over the Hunuas, then back roads to Maramarua forest, Tahuna Rd to Morrinsville, then over the hump to Cambridge.

rained most of last night... Probably still going to rain all day, judging by the forecast. Looks like the ride will be fun :D

From the phone call I received this afternoon, it seems two of the guys had a little less fun trhan was anticipated. Hope you're both good now, and I'm really, really sorry that I had no access to a recovery trailer fellas!!!
Me and Haze managed to do our regular, and had an absolute ball last night. Slightly intoxicated, but I do have a reputation to uphold. I'd like to extend a huge well done to Qkchk on suggesting the change of venue. I don't think we've ever stayed in a site with such a relaxed and accomodating host. As for the hot pools, bloody maaaarvelous, and true to my own high standards, managed to get Steve out before he drowned, and made it as last man soaking..
I would just likje to point out at this early juncture, that despite what may be later posted, I was a reluctant participant in the wet towel whipping......
Oh, and chaps and chapesses, Haze lost a black Stereophonics t-shirt at some point in the evening. We think it was by the pool.
If it turns up, could you let me know please, and we'll sort out delivery/collection/postage costs.
Cheers, to all who's company I was graced with. if I don't see you before, see you for the Saturday night next year.

yep, the two guys were brought back to accommodation, one ridable, the other has found himself a spare bike to "enjoy", while its rider has had an experience very much around his bed while in Tokaanu

Fantastic weekend;
Ride down on Friday was Sweet, those that missed the BP start caught up with us at at the fuel stop in Te Kuiti and we traveled down together on some awesome roads, it got bloody cold when the sun went down though and my bloody heated grips shat themselves
Saturday saw a bright sunny day and a trip down the forgotten world highway. What an awesome road that is the poor old 14 ran out of ground clearance a little to often :shifty:
Stopped at the Whangamomona hotel for a feed then off to Stratford, Inglewood and calved some of the SH3 bends then Qkchk announced (a short cut) turn right :shit: and led us down a freekin metal covered goat track that lasted for about 100k's  We joined back up with the FWH and then Qkchk 's bladder took over and it was a pacey ride back to Taumaranui for the loo and gas. Another night ride back to accommodation was soon over and then the drunken debortuary began, it involved hot pools alcohol and wet towels (what goes on tour, stays on tour :spanking:) it wasn't pretty :corn:
Sunday was a little wet :innocent: but many of us headed out Mrs KG and I went to Taupo had lunch, shopped and returned. On returning and once removed the wet gear had the call that a couple of guys had had a lie down on SH32 so we commandeered a Ute and a trailer and I splashed off to collect them. Gremlin and BB2 went ahead to locate the sodden pair, The VTR was ridable and made it back under its own steam but the GSXR got a lift. Again we all retired to the hot pools for a debrief (and pain relief). A big feed in the restaurant next door preceded the quiz night and social depravity that made for a fantastic evening in some great company.
The ride home today was in some of the heaviest rain Ive come across in all my years riding :gob:until we got to Cambridge for gas and a feed then the sun came out and dry roads all the way home.
A bloody awesome weekend, thanks to Qkchk and Qkkid for organising it all and thanks to everyone for being such great company.
Edit; OMG the pics have started to come out (above) non of it was my fault, I have witnesses to say I was in my own bed all night!!!!!!

Is it just me or is the site double posting every now and then?
There- just fixed it for ya! Yes it is doing it regularly.
Left the Oasis at 9am this morning in pissing rain and rolled in here to Waihi just on 12 lunchtime. It rained all the way home till Matamata and then cleared beautifully! Nasty cross winds through the Tokoroa area had me on the white line a couple of times.
I had been hoping that the concensus would choose the Forgotten Highway. Ive been trying to get to that road for a long time....
And Thanks Qkchk for deciding on that 100 km gravel shortcut- I loved it, my BMW postie bike carves those clay roads, 140kph in places-whoop whoop! I have photos of the rides rather than the drunken antics coming soon- and a vid once I can get the bandwith to upload it.
What a weekend. big ups to the organisers - they kept it all running smoothly through the rain and the debauchery. The meals at the restaraunt next door are great, the new venue rocks and the management are cruisy and obliging. Hot pools - ahhhhhhhh!
So good to meet all the new faces, and very good that The newer riders decided to head off on their own less challanging ride rather than commit to the 800km treck that Dawn led us through. And triply good that Out4aDuck and Intoxicated came through their Diesel slick induced ballet performance without more than a subtle limp each.
An awesome weekends finish to a summers worth of riding!
