I just don't want my sheepskin seat getting all wet!!

Man you Kiwis are tough! I didn't even check to see if it was on tonight, I just thought, Nah can't be!

I did ride across town yesterday to collect a (small) lathe in my backpack in the rain :cold: - not sure if that counts as 'Kiwi tough' or 'Crazy Pom'?

Lathe.
Backpack?
How small is small?
And what do you use it for?

Decided to crank out the reps at the gym, rather than turn the crank on the bike. Just about over the drought-breaking rain, I reckon...
Respect to anybody that got there.

Technically it's only a 'lathe attachment' for a black and decker drill which I have - it's a wood lathe-type so probably not much use for fixing bike parts - even if I knew how to :innocent: But it was only 5 bucks :D I just wanted to see what it could do - I'm planning to make a small model steam engine, so it might come in handy.

I salute your patience then sir (model steam engine)

Actually there is some really interesting stuff being done with Stirling Cycle Engines. One day when I retire p'haps...

Just got in from work. I'm buggered and going to bed early.

If you ever need a lathe you can use mine, but its a little too large to carry in a backpack.

Yeah, Stirling engines are pretty cool

Thanks! The apprentice's work piece would definitely come to the lathe rather than vice versa

Would seem so, I had something very similar a couple of weeks back, wifey got a flu jab then got sick a few days later and gave it to me. Thought it was all gone about a week later until I went night riding on the mountain bike and left large parts of my lungs behind

Sounds like you get what I get after you get a cold. Its similar to a smokers cough, a deep hacking coough that always brings up flem. Its because the lining in the lungs gets imflamed.

I get it every time I get a cold. I get over the cold in about 3 days, unfortunatly my lungs dont recover for about a month.

Must be a conspiracy, Rummie had the same thing. got a 'free' flu jab from work , sick as a dog 4 days later and then spread it to everyone in the family.

neels
3rd June 2010, 21:11
Must be a conspiracy,.Yep, I reckon if there's not enough flu around the drug companies that make the flu vaccine (and also the flu medicine) offer free jabs to get things started for the winter.

Spuds1234

I used to work in the retail industry and I would get a cold this time of year without fail. I never got a flu jab or took any kinda meds for it and it was aways gone in less than 4 days.

Now Im glad I dont get the flu jab each year as I have seen atleast 5 friends who got the jab, get sick not long after getting the jab and be struck down for atleast a week or more.

Geez you lot!:brick:

The flu vaccine is not a live vaccine so cannot cause influenza!

It contains fragments of inactivated virus which stimulates the immune system to produce its own antibodies against the disease -it takes about 2 weeks for our body to produce this protection.

There are many other viruses present atm,so people may catch a different respiratory infection with "flu like" symptoms around the same time that they are immunised & unfairly blame the flu jab

Hope all you unwell ones recover soon:yes:
We nurses are really struggling too, lots of sickness amongst staff....full hospitals in gridlock....

Probably good to be a bit scared of it to start with....

Just get out and practice somewhere, I've had my son out on his GSXR250 in the new subdivision round the corner from our place, riding up & down starting and stopping turning and generally going round and round until his hands get sore from the clutch and brake.

So by the time summer comes round there'll probably be another L plater coming to a wednesday night ride near you...it would be good if he had some company

I am doing basic handling this Thursday morning! Then on to the written in the arvo or on Friday. Very exciting! Have been studying my road code, makes me chuckle "it is dangerous to ride with one hand while adjusting a mirror" and I love how it basically tells you that every car is going to U turn in front of you, in any situation.

Once the fear subsides a bit and you lose the death grip the wrists will get better.

Dont feel guilty Flip. It was my own fault. Front brake on ice and weee lol.

If you had of been there you wouldn't have made a difference. As soon as the bike went over I caught it easily enough, the problem was the front didnt grip like it would if it tipped over on the road so I caught the side and the front wheel kept going, so it fell over anyway.

Its just one of lifes lessons (next time I'll either camp at the bottom of the hill, or use a dirt bike down there.

i'm looking forward to tagging along on the wednesday night rides in the balmy chch summer. and i should probably turn up to the maintenance nights too, as i wanna learn a butt load bout my new ride

question: on any of the rides (after the maintenance meeting, sat morning, or wed night ride), do the learners tag along and go 100, or stick to the 'restrictions' associated with being a learner rider?

cheers.

Some body is always happy to tag along and ride at your pace, and make sure we all get there. One of the unwritten rules is nobody gets left behind.

The ride is the Wednesday night cruise not the Wednesday night go ballistic and get killed ride. Usually the sports bikes get sent off ahead (Kind of like a mine sweeper for the rozza, but don't tell them.)

If you let us know you don't want to go too fast I can always take my "Old Shitter" I can't go much faster than 80 on that. Somebody is always happy to stick at the back and make sure everybody gets there, so its no problem at all.

Some do, some don't and some go some speed in the middle closer to 85 or 90.
Just remember it's your money you're wasting if anything goes wrong and you get done for speeding.
The chance of getting done may be low but can you afford it?

When my partner and I went out while she was on an L plate we generally sat about 90 to be a bit closer to the speed of the other traffic which feels safer than the 70 in a 100km/hr zone. Round the bays or up the summit Rd it's not such an issue because 70 is still a nice speed for a lot of the cornering there.

ahh good point, the rides would be best to be a case by case basis. ie windy route = better for me, compared to a lot/more 100k straight roads for the route on that particular day.

If Saturday is nice why not come along to BK Moorehouse at 11.30 and join in. You will be most welcome.

Hey - anyone who wants to see if it works on their screen/headlight/whatever, I'm bringing some Meguiars Plast-X plastic polish along next time, so if you want to give it a go bring some rags too. Been good on my polycarbonate screen, and does "clear" dull screens (and Jap car headlights!) but YMMV for anything coated etc). Not too aggressive either, so the result isn't easy to be "overdone" - but you do need elbow-grease.

(double post I know but I love you all for it!)

Hi kids, I need your advice ...

I've been hooked again on off roaders, well, dual purpose anyhoo. I'm trying to make my mind up between two models, an '86 XL600R with 50,000 odd and a '91 XR600 with 30,000 odd on it but 3000k ago had a complete engine rebuild, top and bottom.

What I'd love to find out is if there are any major differences between the two models? I know the XR is supposed to be sportier and the XL more of a work horse but what about weight, reliability, parts etc?

The XR attracts me because of the rebuild, I've always wanted one and it's in the south island.
The XL attracts me because I may be able to get it a bit cheaper but it's in the north island so kinda negates that. It also has passenger pegs plus the fitting for a top box which would be good. I'd like to put Gem on the back and to have somewhere to put our crap so she doesn't have to wear a backpack.

The XR is obviously in better nick, rebuild etc plus there's some surface rust on the XL. The XR may need new tyres for a WOF, too knobly possibly, which bumps the price up.
The XL's Ks are getting up there. Is there any maintenance or problems that may arise from an old thumper with 50,000k's on the clock?

Here's the XR:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=298230986&permanent=0

Here's the XL:
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=298549566

Is it my imagination or does the XL look like it has a bigger tank? That's a plus if it does ...
I know footpegs and topbox are do-able to either models so really I'd love to know:

Weight difference
Comfort difference
Reliability difference
Running costs Difference

As most of you know, I'm not a racer. That doesn't mean I wouldn't love the XR to bits but if there's a large comfort difference then it may be enough to sway the vote.

Helen's DR felt just about right for me, not too heavy, not too big, plenty of beans with smooth delivery.

Thanks for any help!

Pete

When I saw that photo I thought it had a big tank too but no, it's just the angle. It has the standard 9L tank. That will however take it close to 190 before needing reserve (apparently but with the way I ride I can pretty much halve that!)
Speaking of Lettuces and snow, I did take it for a lap round the house yesterday and may have, inadvertently, gone thru the garden ...

Yea, that would have been cool. However I think I got enough footage for all of us combined. It was rolling from when you got your bike out of the van until I got home! What's that, 3 hours-ish?

Not bad on battery power it seems!

I'm glad your bike had a light on it, sometimes it was the only way we could see where you had gone. What's the wee mythical creature, a small light that leads weary travellers off the path? That was you today, tho I don't think many old time travellers would have been quite as happy to follow :)

Peetey - good on ya for the kickstarter, just make sure the decompressor is setup right; never did like it when the XL250 backfired the kicker thru the gumboot I was wearing...

Might bring the scooter in to say hi this week if it keeps behaving itself, now that mountainbiking is finished.

I have no idea how to setup a decompressor or even what one is. I certainly couldn't point to one in a lineup. I've had a kicker kick back once, I got a nice view of the top of the front light as I sailed over it!
And of course you'll be missed!

Hi all, anyone clued up on clutches?

My DR is dragging the clutch a bit and creeping when in 1st with the clutch pulled in.
Apparently this is quite common with them. Here's what some sites said:

"Often times, the clutch basket is not machined at the factory to allow sufficient end play when the clutch basket nut is tightened properly.

Another cause can be just normally worn clutch components such as grooves worn into the basket fingers, or worn out thrust washers"

I read a few saying about thrust washers. Anyone know what one is and where to find them? If were to bring the bike on Wed, would anyone be able to help?

Cheers!

take it there is no excess slop in the cable , or excess take up on the clutch rod coming out of cases?

No, Brent and Dave helped me sort that out last week. It's definately the clutch not doing its job properly. Quite common apparently. It doesn't look like a big job if you know how and it all makes sense to me, I'm just a bit nervy doing something like this without the safety net of someone that knows what I'm doing wrong!

Might have a whirl at it tomorrow ... if it's not freezing in my garage, which it quite literally does sometimes ...

have to agree there, wicked frost this side of the hill this morning, prob the hardest so far this winter. Had some wet jeans in the landcruiser and they're frozen solid!.
Depending on the bike if you lean it over opposite side to clutch cover , ya prob get away without dropping the oil, for a quick look'see

My driveway and around the bays can be great fun when it frosts like this, I remember going down the drive sideways on my old bike (kwakka 90cc) and there was nothing I could do about it. Luckily I went into a bush and not the main road! The bush had thorns ... and a fence ...
Would rather not do that on a bike that is actually worth something ... So I'll be ok with my old crappers but none of you better come visit! :D

Edit: Anyone wanna buy a Fiat?

If it was a Bambina I might have been interested - always wanted to a Clarkson-in-the-Miata with the head sticking out the sunroof!:yes::yes:

You're safe, the fiat is sold less than 24 hours after I listed it on trademe. The cheap car market seems to have gone stupid lately.

Admit it HOT, you love your Fiat.

Sounds just like the SAAB 900 turbo I used to own, lovely to drive but a nightmare to own.

Interestingly I don't seem to have learnt from the experience...

Evil child!

Now I'm wondering if they'd ever make sunroof-mounted airbags?!
Anyway, one of the joys of biking - not having to un-crick your neck from being in cars with low(ish) ceilings where you unconciously always end up with your head tilted over to go into the sunroof "dimple" - wife's Echo has been better than either of the BMWs (320 or 735) or parents LR Freelander.
