6th April 2010, 20:45
Wofman & Longwheely from Gloucester Motors/Motorcycles have kindly agreed to host the maintenance evenings for another winter.
These are a chance to learn a thing or two about basic bike maintenance (or just get together for a gas bag and a beer).
We'll do these each Wednseday from 6pm, unless Wofman or Longwheely say it's a no go for that week, starting from NEXT Wednesday the 14th of April.
Location: Gloucester Motors/Motorcycles - Cnr of Gloucester Rd & Fitzgerald Ave
Time: From 6pm Wednesdays

it's quite a complicated system, but if you follow these steps you should come away with a positive result:
Show up at 6pm on wednesday night
Ask for help <---- important!

Usually it just involves standing round, talking crap and then heading to the pub, but ocasionally someone brings something along that they'd like a hand with.

My front wheel's been making a funny noise for a bit now, someone said it because of a warp in the brake disk, which may be, but I'm also suspicious of the bearings. Does anyone have a stand I could use when I get there?

Mines already in bits. Only things left on it really are the wheels, airbox, carbs, engine and exhaust. I figured that its a good time to take out the engine when there are lots of people around.

Now this is going to be good! I saw lots of stuff last year but no where near as technical as this (says she that doesn't even know how to adjust her chain, despite seeing it done last year!) Ah well, time to learn I suppose!

If there are some projects required, I have the following that need doing......
Fork seals
Carb balancing
Painting a fuel tank
Repairing crash damaged fairings
Helicoiling a stripped bolt hole
Replacing a final drive seal
Splitting a crankcase to find the funny noise in 2nd gear
Given a bit of time I'm sure I can think of more...

Snap! I could second almost all of those. I have, I think, a drive shaft bearing to replace. The bearing that the shaft the front sprocket sits on is making noises, I think ...
But that means pulling the engine and cracking the case. How hardcore do/can these evenings get?
First I have to fix the bolts that hold on the front wheel!
and then ...
and ...
also ...

Just remember guys these aren't a chance to have someone else do your work for you for free. The workshop and tools are available (and the expertise) to help you out and to help you learn a bit more about your bike. Serious jobs like splitting a crankcase are probably a bit too much. Afterall, we'll only hang around for a couple of hours each week before heading to the pub!!

Thats why Im just enlisting help to get my engine out. If you get too many people doing to many things then you end up with parts going missing (nuts and bolts etc).
Should be a fun night.

Perhaps I got a bit carried away :shit: :spanking::laugh:
But being serious for a change (it doesn't happen often), most of that list I can do myself at home, however if someone wanted a how to demo I could bring something along and do it there instead.
It would be good if I could borrow some vacuum gauges and bring the boy and his GSXR in to balance the carbs, and a loan of the tools to helicoil the stripped bolt hole in the head of my XL.
And yeah, splitting a crankcase and then chucking all the bits in a box to take it home is not an option, you needs to start with a nice clean bench and proceed in a orderly fashion or it ends badly.

And remember Murphys law when applied to DIY
- any part you need will be far away enough to be a PITA (at home, dealer etc)
- any unit that can explosively self-dismantle will (ping!)
- a good day is when you find ONLY one OTHER thing wrong beyond the first issue you started working on
- things always become more fragile in front of an audience. This rate of increase in fragility is demonstrably related to their replacement cost and/or rarity
- batteries always go flat faster when totally separated from any vehicle under repair

PS the XL250RC would be a trip down memory lane - my second bike, did a full crankcase split on that - then went from a Honda 250 single dual-purpose to a BMW 1000 four-pot full tourer... bit of culture shock to say the least!

I wouldn't mind either seeing how those are done or having help doing my own. How hard is it to "weld" plastic? Would the equiptment for it be there?
Also would there be 2 stands to secure the bike for working on a front wheel? I've got a friend who can loan me one, but to be stable I guess there'd need to be 2.

Is it common for bikes to have trouble changing into neutral? Compared to some other bikes I've ridden mine seems to really dislike finding neutral when parking up.

God - I meant memory lane, that would be about 89, so only 21 yrs ago!
Did have issues with the cylinder head - bolts gone soft and remember the bottom of the case was well filthy, could have done with a lot more degreasing before I'd got in so deep... lots of deep bolt wells. IIRC had to go in from the head down as the cylinder/head bolts went thru into the bottom of the case, designed to crush the halves together.
Had to split for the output shaft seal - which Honda retains by casting a rib into the outside edge, so to fit properly you've got to split - you can't just "drive" it in, although the dealer did recommend just slicing the rib off, and driving in with Loctite to hold (after prying the old one out with the old drill-and-use-self-tappers-for-leverage trick).
Did work from the Clymers, wasn't any big surprises from that IIRC - but only went just enough to take the top off, dislodge that seal and get it back together!
PS - remembered too - get a full gasket set, you may as well do valve seals etc while you're in there...

Neutrals can be interesting - and Google is your friend... It could be a known quirk with your bike/engine/gearbox, either from new or as they age. Most gearbox designs use a spring-loaded "detent" (ball into a dimple, arm/roller into a cam notch) to provide the positive lock between 1 & 2 that is neutral - if the spring is weak, ball sticking or worn, or edges wearing off the recieving dimple/notch then you won't have a definite neutral.
Could also be a factor of your clutch too, if it's got a lot of drag (even when pulled in) - the input gearshaft never really spins down, so it's always got some momentum to contribute to an overshoot; wet clutches do have this to a degree. Again, check the basics as per the service manual and see what you can find....?

Sounds like a doddle then. :weep:
The man at the honda shop mentioned the change seal without splitting crankcase method, followed by a disclaimer that it never really works. That's why it's the winter project to pull the engine, fix the stripped bolt hole in the head, replace the final drive seal and find the horrible noise in second gear. Then hopefully I'll get years of trouble free service.

Have a chat on Weds night - I'm the old fart with the blue BMW; if you can get the engine out & clean then if you can get it around my place for a day on the weekend I can probably help, even if it's just some strange tools & a second opinion - full in-fix-out for me was a weekend from memory (and at least your engine is only about 30kg, not >100!!). You do have the Clymers, right?

General thought (then I'll shut up, I promise)....
I've got a second gearbox here for the BMW, partially dismantled and so taking up more room. Would anyone be interested in seeing what's what? - eg types of gears, bearings, how the gears engage, splines, circlips, how to fit & remove seals etc - while I slowly put it back together. I can also bring along the Haynes & Clymers manuals too, so anyone wondering what they're like can also have a look to see how they match up to reality and what sort of accuracy they give for involved stuff like this... probably a good thing to think of and be confident in before you think of doing any of your own work!!
Would that be an idea? Even if it just ends up as a look-see opportunity, no timetable for getting it sorted from my end, bits can just go back in the snap-loc bags if needs be (shouldn't get in the way of any others needing help, I can just play with my blocks in a corner!)

No, it was not an easy bike to get into neutral if the oil was cold.
About the worst thing that happened to one of mine was the fuel emptied itself into the bottom of the sump and I ran a set of cams and followers.

Great idea!
Wouldn't it be better to do this at say 1PM~ though?
That way:
-The roads have warmed up and are ice-free going forward.
-People get to sleep in after their Friday night / Week at work.
-Those working morning shifts on Saturdays (aka. People that work at bike shops!) would be able to join.
-People don't have to have lunch out!

Ah, I completely forgot. Yep, would love to! What sort of time are you thinking? I'll try to be awake early enough to at least go say g'day to the Sat morning riders then, once they go, come help out.
My home number is on my profile page, my cell doesn't work out here but is fine once I'm in town. Maybe give me a yell just before 9.30 and we'll take it from there. I'll check back here before I go just in case.

I'll probably not join as:
A) It's probably too early for me for a big ride
B) I went for a great ride out that way with Transalper today

Should I buy sandpaper and primer or something as well?
I'd guess yes on the sandpaper and probably some disposable gloves too! Primer - probably afterwards, get a disposable dust mask or two as well (goggles probably good too for later sanding stages - all assumes you're sanding back the FG to paint, but maybe not if it's all hidden?)
Also - haven't done any FG but would guess it's like normal body-bog when it comes down to it - it's a glue, if you put glue over an unstable/weak layer (the paint!) with nothing to "key" to then eventually they'll separate. Would also guess that epoxy on some plastics will never be strong; you might be up for checking if wiring (drill holes & recessing channels into **outside** of the panel, spanning the crack, so you can run wires to lace-up the crack - tight on the dressy side, so they can go in under the bog/filler, loose on the back so the epoxy can have something to set around) ... all depends on the panel in question!! (And you could end up making it too strong and getting stress elsewhere, who knows).
Might have some generic info on it, are you along on Weds?

FYI
I sent a sample of the oil from the first oil change to Goughs for testing. It came back with what you would expect. The iron, silicon, chrome, copper and aluminium levels were all high. This bike only has a very basic oil slinger-type filter. The lab correctly identified to run the bike for another 20 hours and resample the oil.

Anyway the executive of the "Saturday Ride" met tonight and after long discussions and deep thought, it was decided to set the meet time forward by an hour and a half to 11.30 with the departure time being 12.00. This still gives us the opportunity to go to a cafe or pub for lunch and a chat, which was the origional idea behind the SatRides.
Akaroa this week???????
And now for something completely different.
It has come to my attention that people were seen actually grinning tonight at the Wednesday Maintenance Evening. Unless they were grimacing with terror at Flip's driving style????? What think the crew???:rofl::rofl:

Nice to see you all tonight ...
Saw a great sight on the way home, wondering if you noticed it Flip. Did you look to your left when waiting at the lights on the corner of Manchester and Moorhouse?
Wish I had the camera ...
A 4x4 ute came out of the PacknSave car park. Instead of lifting all the shopping out of the trolley and putting it in the back of the ute, they simply lifted the entire trolley into the back and off they went!
I followed them all down Moorhouse, I was waiting for the bananas bouncing round on the top to fly off ...
At least they had a healthy diet by the looks of it. :)

With much kindness from the host I'll be bringing the Kat in next Wed. Having issues with the front wheel.
One of the brake lines had a nick in it so am replacing them tomorrow with Braded lines from Safe R Brakes, while I'm there and just to be sure.
They cost about the same as the bike! Well, maybe minus a decimal point ...
So sort the wheel, put in new brake fluid then I'm hoping someone can ride it and listen to a noise I've been told could be an output shaft bearing on its way out.
Looking forward to it! :Punk:

Morning all,
With the kind help of Cruza we managed to figure out the the front wheel of my Kat, which was a bit skee-wiff when I put it back on a while ago, is now more of less straight.
Long story short we also figured out that on both the front brakes, one of the brake piston things is stuck/seized. One half works ok, one doesn't so one of the two pads on both sides is pushed all the way out and can't go back in making it almost impossible to get the bloody things back on, let alone allow the wheel to rotate.
So, does anyone know how to un-seize a disc brake piston? Is this something that we could do on Wed or would I have to take it to the shop?
If we can do this on Wed then we could also bleed the brakes with the new braided lines, then hopefully the bike would be all go!

I normally give my pistons a good swim in brake clean from repco annaully but I must warn you keep that stuff away from anything rubber.
want you could try And please be careful doing this to much pressure and snap , first spray with brake clean the use shoe spreader and pump the handle bar lever alternativly to see if you can free them that way but if that works I would still strip down and clean.

Reckon you should price rekit quote from the shop peeteey. as you need new pads as well and you don't want leaking brake fliud for the sake of a few dollars for new seals after freeing up piston.
Think you also say that you put a different rim and rotors on with that new tyre. Still could be slighty different from original one on the bike

Righto, will do. The rotors are the same, I swapped them over from the old rim, the new rim is the only difference. I'd forgotten what a joy long overdue maintenance is on old bikes, you undo one nut, which was probably seized, then the whole thing falls apart!

Usually a jammed calliper piston is caused by the build up of brake dust solidifying on the exposed piston and jamming as the piston is pushed back into the calliper body.
If I read correctly, the problem is the piston jammed OUT? In this instance the best thing to do is remove the calliper and remove all the pistons, give it a good clean and reassemble.
If you don't want to fit new seals etc (which isn't always necessary)careful about what you spray at the calliper. Sometimes it is possible to twist the piston slightly clockwise/anticlockwise using various gubbins but be super careful not to damage the piston surface. The piston may be jammed as it has cocked over. C clamp vise grips are useful to pull the piston back in SLIGHTLY before using compressed air to get them out.
When everything is clean and new the whole process is easy. When it comes to things which are stuck sometimes the cheaper option is to pay someone who has a few clues to fix it. You may be able to do it yourself. You may be able to root it yourself.
If you can afford to learn the hard way are prepared to risk it have a go. Either way you'll learn something.

Was a reasonable amount of gunk in lines and line spliter, used a fair bit of force to try and move piston, its not jammed all the way out, but theres no way a fresh set of pads would fit. Considering state of pads and caliper, reckon do it once/right policy would be safest.
strip, clean ,check bore and new seals

Definately need to get those pistons out and give it a good clean with kero and scotchbrite.
Try heating the calliper with a hot air gun and trying the compressed air route.
I'm sure if you bought the callipers in to the Maint evening some kind souls might help. However bearing in mind the risk of f****ing something perhaps swopping money for the chance to watch a professional do it might be wise...
Cooks and broth you know.

Are you sure it is the pistons that are siezied, making the calipers lop sided/ or the caliper slides siezed?
There are two little pins the calipers slide on to keep them central with the disc, these often are forgotten when pads are changed, not being serviced, this cancause lop sided wear on the pads, and also the effect of a piston being siezed.
If a Piston has siezed to the point that you cannot remove it by force of opperating the prake lever alone, then you are possibly up for some serious work, I would recomend a professional brake service center if this was the case.
Otherwise, if it is the slides then a wire brish, some KY gell ( white petrolium jelly) and time can do wonders to sticky calipers.
I have found from experiance that sticking calipers slides are the most common cause of uneven disc pad and disc wear on bikes.

Yep, I'm going to subscribe to this policy. They're going into the shop tomorrow. Would have gone in today but I totally forgot about them rattling around in the boot! :innocent:
I'm sure if you bought the callipers in to the Maint evening some kind souls might help.
We are lucky to have such a great collective of knowledge, aren't we? But after seeing the look on Cruza's face whilst trying to get things unstuck, the amount of crap throughout the brakes, the fact that they probably haven't been serviced in 26 years and the fact that for some bizarre reason I can afford it at the moment, they're going to the shop.
Usually a jammed calliper piston is caused by the build up of brake dust solidifying on the exposed piston and jamming as the piston is pushed back into the calliper body.
...
Either way you'll learn something.
I reckon this is exactly it, upon reexamination in sunlight, they're bloody filthy! Even moreso than I first thought! How they worked over the last number of years I'll never know ...
And yea, the thing I've learned is often the shortcut turns out to be the longest way between two points (Murphy's Law) :D
I have found from experiance that sticking calipers slides are the most common cause of uneven disc pad and disc wear on bikes.
There is definitely some unevenness on one side but it's not chronic. The slides seemed ok, not rusty or sticky at all. I'll bring the bike in once the brakes have been fixed. Should be able to get there under it's own steam then! Woop!
Thanks everyone for thoughts and ideas :niceone: :first:

If the pistons are seized, don't butcher it, bring it to me on a Saturday morning and I'll strip it and clean it. PM me if you want details.

Righty ho people, have a wee problem. When I was adjusting my headlight (a couple of weeks ago) I had to take out the speedo cable, no big thing there but I have now got a problem where the speedo is vibrating in it's casing, I have checked the connection everything seems to be ok, any ideas?? I'm going to have a look at the workshop manual to see if I can figure it but may need your help if I can't!
If these modern bikes went back to putting the instruments in the tank where they belong you would not have a problem.

Hell no,we should be moving forward (in regards to having take your eyes off the road to read instruments), not backwards... sooner there's an open standard for bike and helmet manufacturers to follow regarding instruments on your visor, the better.
Spectacles, testicles, watch, wallet and speed. See you can do it all in milliseconds.
Visor is that one of those new fangled clear things they are putting on them flash new saftee lids is it? You know me I am hell anti tek.
Is anybody going Wednesday? I would like to pop in for a while for nothing better than I have fixed the hub on the boxer and it is probably going to be too wet to ride into town tomorrow night.
Not going if it's like this... I know I'm a whimp, but working on a wet bike ain't no fun. And I've been commuting on the bike anyway. And it's getting longer to dry the gear out!! ... Plus predicted gale force southerlies will probably be a bridge just too far, but we do have to discount for MetServices' grasp on reality with that prediction too.
I guess you'd be OK if you'd bought an Isetta, instead of the sidecar?

Same Liv, probably be along in the cage! I don't mind riding in the rain (done that a few times now) but it's the combination of dark, wet white lines that doesn't excite me much.
