This is inspired by a thread on another forum I am on: Here is an example from another member. I dont agree, but I would never have seen the Willie Nelson version of this song otherwise.

Jimi Hendrix did "All along the watchtower" so much better than that poofta Bob Dylan and The Sex Pistols put a bunch of energy into "I did it my way". Robert Plant shined up "If I were a carpenter" and Led Zep sharpened up Joan Baez's (sp) "Babe I'm gonna leave you" no end.

The title of the thread should be covers that are DIFFERENT to the original.

The better thing is purely subjective. IMO many of those posted (including mine) aren't 'better' - they are just alternate.

This disappoints me.

I love Foo Fighters, and System of a Down, but this song is a pathetic cover of the Dead Kennedy's "Holiday in Cambodia".

Changing the lyrics to a more MTV friendly version is sad. Wussy crowd who this seems completely wasted on as well.

absolutely better than the original, if not quite to my taste. I do like the five string bass and seven string git tar also. I kind of expected cookie monster vocals and was pleasantly surprised.

Nobody seems to know for sure who wrote the song. Both the Safaris (WipeOut) and The Leaves did it in 1965. The Byrds did it in/around 1966. Hendrix put his own spin on Hey Joe in/around 1967. Deep Purple did it Hendrix-esque in 1969.

Roy laid some of the foundations of rock music no doubt. And according to internets the song was written for him, but Lauper's version enjoyed greater commercial success.

The statement that either are pleasant to listen to indicates nothing more than that.

There is also a clip on YT with Cyndi singing over Roy's video for copyright beating. And Connelly still looks great.

Yeah, I hear you there. HW covering wuthering heights was nice. But lacked some 'feel' or heart to it....but was beautifully done - and certainly not 'plain'.

but compare it to the original - and noting Bush was 18 at the time she wrote and first sung this.
