Hi all.
Organisation is well underway for this years Brass Monkey Rally. It is the 30th this year so should be good one, heres hoping for lots of cold....
Entry forms and information is available at the Brass Monkey Web site www.brassmonkeyrally.org.nz or hopefully attached here. The web site also has merchandise and online secure electronic pre payment facility available.
We have special deals in place for ferry crossings and can arrange gear transport from various main centres in NZ as well if required.
Big Fire, Big band, Big hospitality and Big cold, dress warm and hope to see you there.
Any question just ask on here or shoot me a pm.

Well I hope to be down for it, and I know of one other north islander who may be coming....so how much are the ferry prices?

SilverGrin

It drizzled the last couple times, and there was little to no cover, so lots buggered off to bed early. Are they planning to have some sort of marquee or tent to shelter if it should rain or drizzle again?

Coldrider

Ferry prices should be about $146 return, bike & rider.
Drizzle, better than a summer run, problem last year it didn't snow long enough.

Hi. Yes rain has been a bit of an issue for the last couple of rally's but we have had 27 dry ones! The issue with the tent thing is the risk with the bonfire setting the bloody thing on fire and having a major drama...so no sorry no tent but it will not rain so no problem....

Oamaru is sure a great place to kip(done that a few years), but last year made it through to Ranfurly, (that will be the plan this year also) staying at the camp ground, with a good night had...

hehe, seems I can say stuff with out saying anything, and in saying that, I have very little to add. Saying you are from that northern land accross the straight, is almost as bad as saying you are from Oxford, out in Canturbury

Small issue with the interIslander discount rates but it should be all sorted now, sorry if it caused a few dramas.
Bring on the snow!

I hope you enjoy them, membership has its privileges! Special badges and hospitality for members who have been x10 or x 20 and this year been the 30th a small special bunch who have done all thirty will get something rather special....
Entertainment will have a few new things this year as well.

Hi.
You can apply for 20 up prior to the rally and get it confirmed that this is your 20th, email sec@brassmonkeyrally.org.nz to get an application form. If confirmed prior to the rally you can get your 20 up badge at this years rally. If you wait until the rally you have to wait until it can be checked which would be after the rally and then your badge is sent out.

Taking the long way Kerry? Going via DUD from CHC will add a few K's. After seeing a guy in '86(ish) with icicles hanging off his eye lashes, from a ride through Central to the rally site, I'm convinced that SH1 and the Pig Route is the way to go. Its 400km from my doorstep, yet to decide if i will attempt to go there direct or stop for a night along the way.

Going again this year, but as it is the 30th we thought we would do it differently,
Blenheim to the Brass on 50cc scooters, about five of us are going to tackle it including my wife.
I am riding a c50 stepthrough that i paid $25 for.
Will be riding with no back up vehicle and carrying all the gear required for the journey and traveling the roads less traveled, through the center of the McKenzie country gravel roads and then the Danseys Pass.
Was too easy on the Busa , mind you i would rather have an off on one of these beasts than the Busa.

I'm planning to take my old shitter down from Christchurch. It only does 70-80 kph on the open road, and thats slow enough for me. Don't think I could do it on a moped. Brought a set of handle bar mits for this trip as I could not find a set of heated bars that will fit it. At least I will have heaps of luggage space, thats one advantage of a side car.

I'm also really looking forward to the trip as well. I must remember to take Friday off. Might stay in Kurow fri night.

Gixxer peter

Hoping cold wont be too much of a problem as wind chill will be minimlistic.
luggage could be hassle tho, will stake it on the scooter like they do in some of those asian countrys??

Found some over wrap handle bar heaters the other day so I am in hog heaven now. The shitter being a boxer is kind of good in winter as it keeps my feet warm and dry. Booked my leave so we are all good to go now. Better go and book some accommodation somewhere for Friday night.

The pig route is the quickest by far.

Danseys is a bit harder than a gravel road and you could ride the pig route twice before you got a road bike over danseys once.

The Danseys route is with 50 km's of gravel ... about half of that (steep) up hill, or down hill. A pretty loose surface at the moment.

Well I am stuck at home at the moment, sick as a dog, lost my voice and I should be in the garage servicing and packing the bike for the brass. Hell I hope I can kick this in a couple of days.

Doing the rounds at the moment, rummie had it last week, I'm at home for next couple of days looking after the boy as he's crook as with the flu. Just hope I stay clear .

Yes the weather is looking good for the weekend. Feeling just a little bit better today, just taken Ted for a small walk around the block and i'm buggered. I have got the bike ready and mostly packed. It would have taken me a couple of hours if I was feeling fit and well but it took me about a day and a half to get ready.

Still in two minds how to get to the rally. Not going by the main road if I can help it:

Diamond harbor: Lincoln: Leeston: Rakaia: Thompson's Track: Geraldine: Dog Kennel corner. Then a choice Hakataramea Pass to Kurow or the main Rd (No8) through the MacKenzie country to Kurow.
Day 2 is just see how I feel about Danseys.

Yes this has been a really shitty time to get sick. I had glandular fever many years ago and when I get run down I don't recover well. Going to the Doc tomorrow to get some antibiotics because I am simply not getting well. I did a brass a few decades ago sick and spent most of the rally in my sleeping bag.
If I am still really sick on Friday going Saturday I might just load the bike onto the ute and go some of the way down in the vehicle. I know its a piker way of doing the brass.

Hey all,

I thought there was a 10% tolerance to allow for speedo inaccuracies so they can ticket you for 110 in a 100 area, or 55 in a 50 area etc.

FJRider
3rd June 2010, 15:15
A quick flick through the Road Code states speed limits must be adhered to ... no tolerances in law are given. If people continue to speed (die) ... NO tolerances given ...

The clampdowns have only just began ...

Flip
3rd June 2010, 15:26
Honestly is going from 110 to 105 much of a clampdown, really. I would say if every motor driver stopped speeding for a month and gave the rozza nothing to do they could fix the boy racer problem once and for all.

Well that's the Brass done and dusted for me  Set off from Rollyberg this morning. First stop Kurow via the Hakataremea Valley/Pass for a pie and fuel. Pie was good but when fueling up I noticed the engine was covered with some strange looking mud  A quick poke confirmed my suspicions that it was oil, but where from?209524 209522 It would appear that when the bike was in for its 36000km service somebody has forgotten to tighten the tappet cover on the front cylinder. Fortunately the Kurow garage had some 4T oil to top up and a litre bottle to get me home. Getting at the tappet's involves removing the fairings, tank and air-box & I was not too keen on doing that at the side of the road.

Perhaps I should have had an inkling all was not right when I checked the tyre pressures last night and saw this 209523 The bike had only been ridden home from being serviced at the bike shop. Somebody forgot to do up the lock-nuts as well.

Frigging annoying when you pay good money for shit service that f**ked up what should have been a great weekend. Some bike shop is not going to have a happy start to their week Tuesday morning. :angry2::mad:
