View Full Version : Ducati tank sucking...

Noticed over the last few months a tendency for the filler cap when opended to suck air in with a loud woosh.
I checked the vent and it seemed ok.
Also from time to time the fuel system would ' spit' and then it would be fine.
Last weekend following a run to a BFTP rally in Hastings and 1300kms I thought I'd see if I could get from Taupo to Auckland on one tank of 15 litres...yep no probs.
Last night I took off the tankbag and to my horror I saw that the tank had imploded on itself.
I scoured the net and it turns out to be a known issue with the SS and Monster range and possiblily others.
The cause is the rubber seal under the filler cap that should guide the air from outside into the tank. As the petrol is used up the space is taken by air.
However in my case the rubber o seal covered the hole and the tank went into vacuum, with the pump just pumping fuel to the injectors. Eventually the vacuum causes the tank to collapse.
I looked at all the options....and went with pressurising the tank via a regulator, mainly because I had a cylinder of nitrogen a regulator and some refrigeration guages.
I drained and removed the tank, sealed up the fuel lines and slowly pressurised the tank to about 10 psi ( less than 1 bar).
It popped out and was way better but still with some dents.
Removing the filler cap revealed a series of tiny grub screw around the inner ring of the filler , these were tricky to remove as there was some corrosion and they were only about 3 mm.
After that I removed the pump and filter.
The inside of the tank was corroded and the bottom rusty and gungy with water/fuel/rust.
There is one tiny pin hole in the bottom.
I need to find someone who can repair the dents, preferably one of those paint less dent jobs....then I'll Por 15 tank seal it, fit a new filter and put it back on.
I was surprised to see the inside of the tank in this state.....but the bike is a jap import and they spend a lot of their life sitting with the air condensing and moisture accumulating in the tank.
Take a look at the pictures, it might be worth shining a tourch into your tank.:shit:

Well it could be worse, I could be living out my motorcycling existance posting thousands of moronic statements on KB, riding a Hoysong ( whatever they are) and listening to Greensleeves at my place of work.
When I was pressurising the tank today I did think that If I had been you I would have used LPG and found the leak using a lighter.:gob:

Wow. By what measure is a late model Ducati an ancient piece of scrap? Are you jealous, insecure, or just plain incapable of any form of empathy?
What a miserable, shallow existence you must endure . . .

Of course it's not an ancient piece of scrap....maybe just a piece of scrap then. We'll have to blame the fuel injection - it wouldn't happen with gravity feed, the bike would just stop.Car gas tanks seen to have positive pressure...air rushes out when you take the cap off.Obviously they have fitted injection to a carbed bike as an add on.

yes, not 100% successsful.....but better.
and for Mr WHIPPY:
....You should have seen the look on my face....it was the the look of the kid who asked for a single cone and got a double cone with a flake boom boom....as in Basil Brush...not using LPG for spraypainting, soda blasting, water blasting or frothing icecream.

with cage tanks i think its cos of the fuel recirculating through the manifold and heating up the tank, and expanding the air. When the car cools down the tank draws in new air through the check valve.
But yeh, that's pretty weird to suck in the tank like that, I suppose the upside is that there won't be the gouges or sharp angles on the dent associated with dropping a bike, so hopefully a lot easier to fix perhaps?
I am surprised that you did not get performance issues with a tank like that. Perhaps because it is injected and not gravity fed? POR 15 is magic stuff, I can really recommend it. Make sure you wrap the tank well with plastic though, that stuff sticks like shit to a wet blanket DAMHIK

If it was gravity fed carbs it would have been cutting out after a few miles, I had noticed the odd spit and more recently it had been cutting out at " interesting' moments.
But intermittent problems are hard to track down and I usually leave them to become more apparent.
My suggestion here is that its worth having a peek into the tank to see whats there.
I have used POR 15 before on my Kombi tank and your right its good stuff but masking is needed and its hard to remove from fuel lines unless you set it up to drain correctly.
Hmmmm...raining.....was going to go to the tip with the green waste....get some mulch ( or summit) and have a hoe down in the garden...

Evaporative emissions are a big source of HC,and for some decades cars have had their tanks vented through a charcoal canister....and require positive pressure for that.Motorcycles are emission dirty for their size - coming to a motorcycle near you soon,a fuel tank vented through a charcoal canister.

Blasphemy, you'll be consigned to the halls of hell along with the Moto Guzzi riders for that comment
Was that yours in the pic of it being lifted onto a boat?
Yes it was, I sold it about 97-98 after 6 years and knocking up about 50K on it, recently it was up for sale again and immigrated to Ozstralia
I really liked the Darmah except for the shitty 15l tank which with the 40mm carbs meant 160-180km you were looking for a gas station and hammered you'd be getting nervous about 140km

Strangely amusing...
look .........im sorry MSTRS...............i have to take exception with you there.....................you seem to imply that DB was born of this world...........whereas i and many others it would seem tend to think he was shot onto a shithouse wall and left to hatch in the sun
I imply nothing.
But now that you mention it...

My bike played up in a most frustrating and annoying way for ages, no amount of fiddling, changing spark plugs etc made any difference to the way it ran. Then some very wise person suggested it might be rust in the tank and hey presto a win.
Good fun playing with POR 15 too

Well.... after popping the dent out with nitrogen too it to the man who does paintless dent removal , but he could not do it....so out with the hammers and dollys all taped up. A couple of hours later and its not looking too bad....definately not bad enought to want to spend $500 on a second hand one.
Treated the tank with POR 15 metal ready.bit of flake like rust..it go quite warm, swirled it around , whipped out the bungs, washed it out and left it for a couple of days to dry.
poured in the Por 15 tank seal ...drained off the excess and left it for a few days to harden.
bought a new fuel filter and filler o ring and put it all back together.
Started it up and it runs again.
Mr Taylor has revalved the shock so roll on weekend....
Had the tank not imploded it would have rusted out anyway.....
Photo of Por 15 just before draining off surplus.
1 litre of this has so far done 1 Kombi tank, and two bike tanks.

Yeah! that and a new used shock (off a ducati monster 900) and my clutch and brake parts for Baz and gaskets and magneto for Gad. Still waiting for the seriously overdue delivery of motivation though. Until that arrives nothing is happening.
